Over the past year, there have been ongoing rumours about the Mass Effect trilogy remaster coming to the Nintendo Switch.
In November 2020, EA officially announced the game would be arriving on Microsoft and Sony's consoles alongside a PC release. At the time, this put an end to speculation about a possible Nintendo version.
Now, though, there's new hope. In an interview with our friends over at Eurogamer, the director of Mass Effect's Legendary Edition, Mac Walters, has mentioned how EA and Bioware haven't completely ruled it out just yet.
"Personally, I'd love it. But ultimately, I think we had a path set and it was like, let's finish that, then let's see sort of where we're at."
It's further explained, in the words of Eurogamer, how the Legendary Edition originally "got off the ground" on "PC and existing consoles" and these particular platforms remain Bioware's current focus.

Given that it's not quite the graphical update that a lot of people hoped, I absolutely think they could port it to Switch in the future.
I just don't get why EA ignores a console with an 80mio userbase (with is still growing) so much? Especially since those 3 games will run perfectly fine on the Switch (ME3 was even on the Wii U)
I’m sorry did I miss the part where Switch isn’t an existing console? I would love if devs stopped putting the Switch down all the time.
I’ve bought ME1 twice on PC, twice on PS3. Will download day one on PS4 and hopefully again on Switch for good measure. 😅
@TDRsuperstar2 To clarify, Eurogamer said that.
Basically, the devs are focused on the "existing consoles" they've already announced the Legendary Edition for - for now.
They probably could just port the originals to Switch instead and people would buy them. It’s an interesting one.
This confirms it... Nintendo doesn't exist.
Headed for cloud based?
Switch:😐 well fcuk me.
Pluto:😒 welcome to the club, buddy.
@kemosabii I hope not. If we can get doom and the switcher, we can get this.
@Liam_Doolan ah alright 👍🏽
@PhhhCough 🤫
EA being EA, they will probably give Switch a port of Mass Effect 3 that costs more than the Trilogy collection.
Nah, that's going too far. Even EA wouldn't do something as bad as that.....
This is basically the only EA owned IP I really really like and want on Switch. If EA doesn't make this happen, they can kiss my fat rear end. They wont get a dime from me otherwise.
I don't need the updated version of the game. Just throw throw all 3 original games into one release and update the UI for Switch buttons and I'm set!
The Switch has sold nearly 80 million units now, right? If 1 in 100 Switch owners bought the trilogy, that would be 800,000 sales. There's no way that wouldn't pay for a port with lots of money leftover as pure profit.
But here's what I think most likely to happen. EA releases this Legendary Edition on PC and other consoles first. Then like a year to a year and a half later they release it on Switch and it only sells a tiny fraction of the other versions. Then some suit at EA says in an interview "sEE SwItCh owNers no Leik our GamEz!!! Dat Y we NO support suich moar!"
No thanks. If it does happen rather than "Legendary", knowing EA it'll be "Legacy" with no enhancements or fixes or whatever.
"Existing consoles?" Have I... have I been imagining the Nintendo Switch? Did we lose Nintendo?! D:
I would love to have ME on Switch, I would buy it Day 1 and I absolutely mean that. But it won't happen. "We would love to put it on Switch". Yeah right, whatever.
I think Switch version of this would sell like crazy. Especially if totally on cart...though that would be doubtful from EA. I think we will eventually see it and have 2 theories on a delay...
1) They are really hoping that folks will be impatient and unsure if it will make it to Switch so they'll buy it on another platform and then be tempted to double dip when it makes it to the Switch.
2) The development for Switch and the vision they have for the more powerful platforms it different enough that they figure it would be easiest to complete development for the other platforms and then have one of the Switch port specialist studios do a conversion.
Hopefully Nintendo drops some news soon so we can quickly forget about EA shafting us yet again.
I Would buy this on the switch but unless a switch date is announced I’m just going to get it on the PS4.
I’ve only played ME3 on the Wii U and loved it.
Ignoring 80 million users after a while is bad business.
I'd love to buy the Mass Effect collection (assuming they haven't ruined ME1, which is an open question), but I'm focused on existing hybrid consoles right now. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to port these over with the bug fixes and QoL fixes. In the meanwhile, other companies who ARE prioritizing my preferred platform will get my support.
@kemosabii probably not.
Mass Effect is a 7th gen game so it can easily run on switch.
It uses UE3 which is used for Rocket League, MK11, etc on switch.
@nessisonett yeah. Or at least release the remastered versions separately.
I think a problem with ME LE on switch is the file size. It will be a lot so they will have to these things.
1. Release the OG ME trilogy
2. Release the remastered versions individually
3. Call in Panic Button to port it
4. Cloud version
@TDRsuperstar2
I actually read that part as in ME Legendary Edition is potentially coming on the Switch pro lol
@PhhhCough ME is no where near DOOM and Witcher 3's specs.
Mass Effect is a 2007 game which is old enough to run on switch perfectly.
Mass Effect 2 is a 2009ish game
Mass Effect 3 is a 2012 game and its on the Wii U
If the Wii U can handle Mass Effect, then the switch can do it perfectly as well
@dil_power it probably will but not now
@arrmixer you're in for a treat!! ME2 is soooo good! And playing the trilogy as a whole really adds to the experience.
I don't believe that PVZ battle for the neighborville will come to switch any way. Its a dead game and it uses frostbite which the switch cannot run at all.
Its better if they port Dead Space, Sims, or ME to switch instead
I'm buying this for either XBox or PS4... but I'd absolutely double dip for a Switch port.
Edit: Unless they released it as a cloud version on Switch, at which point I'd pass.
Doesn’t have ME3 multiplayer so it’s not a complete version anyway.
I like how they address the Switch as not an existing consoles even though it's beating everything on the market right now.
Welp switch is the only way I’ll double dip. PC player so I have been using mods so I’m fine with what I have.
Also not fond of the series in retrospect.
@Dezzy It's being redone in 4K, what were people expecting, exactly?
AWAITING APPROVAL
@mariomaster96 and the WiiU version was fast and away the prettiest and best running version.
@BloodNinja
I think some people were expecting a real high end graphical remake, like RE2 Remake or FF7 Remake.
It's quite clear from the trailer, and from some leaked gameplay footage on youtube, that that's NOT what it is. It's essentially just getting all of the games up to the ME3 graphical standard and then high resolution and 60fps. It looks like an early PS4/Xbox One game. Not PS5/Series X quality at all.
@Dezzy Oh! Well it looks gorgeous to me. I’m not buying cause I’m not into the series, but I was blown away by the trailer because the last Mass Effect I briefly played was the very first one.
NINJA APPROVED
They managed to weave a path through Switch and Series X, the consoles I own, without making a version for either. Darn it!
@LUIGITORNADO You're right, it doesn't have ME3 multiplayer. that's why LE is the superior version. No more lame tacked on mode in order to get the proper ending.
At least we have The Outer Worlds to fill in the Mass Effect gap.
Switch only owners will get it a few years down the line lol
This why i hate EA and don't buy their games for over a decade.
Funny thing is that a nintendo switch version would actualy sell more then 3 consoles combined, its the perfect game for this platform, people will love it.
Pc users are going to ignore it, most of them illegal download it, xbox usere have played it, mayby inly dedicated ps users want it.
This is just madness not to release it in a 80 million user based console. Wich will become the most sold system ever within years.
Why are they always piss people off.
"Releasing on all mayor platforms", and ignoring the switch:/
Beside my complaining, this is my most beloved game of all time, and i played alooooot of games the last 35 years.
I hope you people are able to play it anyway if you have not played the game before.
Maybe the cheapest way on stadia if its released on it.
@Liam_Doolan see what you started with the eurogamer "existing consoles" byline😆😆
According to EA, the Switch is not an existing console.
Makes sense.
@PhhhCough I've updated it to avoid any further confusion.
@kemosabii I hope not. It should be relatively easy to port a 360 to the Switch, it's been done, and even run better most of the time.
Why is this on Nintendolife? Please only report on games that are coming to the Switch. Because I don't need / want to know about games that are not coming. I have purexbox.com or pushsquare.com for that.
We all need and deserve Garrus in handheld mode in bed.
@8itmap_k1d I know that feeling. Same with Persona 5.
I was never able to play Mass Effect and was hoping the switch rumours were good so I now could. I won’t play this on my PlayStation so I guess I still won’t be playing mass effect
Starting to seem like a really bad case of leaving money on the table when old games don’t make it to Switch. I can understand brand new AAA stuff not making it, but this is a missed opportunity for them. Maybe it will finally make it as a promotional tool as we get closer to the new game in 2023 (possibly).
It’s also exactly the kind of thing I would want on the system. As it is I’ll wait for it to come on Game Pass for Series X and play it then. Their loss.
@mariomaster96
EA is a company that actually loses money on getting themselfs a bad reputation among gamers. I think its very hard to get into how their board of directors reason. MB they think Nintendo is a dead Plattform bc Mass Effect 3 didn't perform well on Wii U, like nothing changes in 8 years..
I think it would be pretty close to free money for EA to port games like Mass Effect to Switch
Bring it! Best RPG trilogy ever made
Just give it to Virtuos/Panic Button/Saber so we can have them by the end of the year, come on!
@mariomaster96 The legendary edition of Mass Effect isn't just an upscale. All of the games were ported to UR4 and DX11, textures were updated and cutscenes re-rendered, lighting was retooled from scratch in some instances and a female Shepherd was made playable in the first and second games (see Kinda Funny's first impressions of the Mass Effect Legendary Edition). ME1 also had some gameplay and control updates to bring it in line with the rest of the series, as well as new models. While I think they could probably downscale to the switch despite the new engine (Switch has some UR4 titles on the AA and AAA side- Shin Megami Tensei V, Octopath Traveller, and Yoshi's Crafted World are all on UR4), it sounds like their initial focus is to push it to PC, then step back after they've recouped dev costs, had a chance to evaluate sales and how much it would take to port to other platforms, starting with the easiest. Since it is not DX12, has no ray-tracing and no multiplayer, I think a port might be likely. But I wonder if it would make more sense to just release the ME Trilogy from the Wii-U instead. It would look and run better on Switch, and might provide incentive for double-dipping. As a bonus, it would include multiplayer, which wasn't ported for the UR4 remake.
@AshFoxX eh EC fixed that. And multiplayer was still/is fun.
@Dethmunk maybe the whole marketing push behind this is “look how hi res this is” and they simply don’t want to put resources into a switch version that wouldn’t look that great.
There’s the whole write up on IGN about the difficulty of the project on PC, PS4 and one.
It’s their choice. Buy it on a different system or not at all.
Then there is the file size. I’m sure it’s pretty large.
@PhhhCough You, sir, made my funny bone giggle. Thank you 😄
@mariomaster96
Now, there is a little spark of hope for EA. If Apex Legends turns out to be a great port, I think EA would finally get the hint that they should ask Panic Button again to port their games.
Getting for PS4 day one. Although they have said all the dlc and everything is is included, I have yet to find anything that says everything is ALL on the disc with nothing to download. Can anyone clarify? I don’t want a spyro situation! Xxx
@PhhhCough,
He did explain it further in the comment section, but has not altered the article and left the statement intact.
i really don't think EA is gonna allow this port. They just won't care. And to the people that say it's crazy to ignore 80m people, yes it is, but EA survived with very minimal switch support since 2017, so it won't impact them at all if they continue like that. Most of the money made is from micro-transactions in their games.
Same for activision, minimal support and looking at things, they probably won't support the switch anymore this year.
They are different from smaller studios like falcom, where they ABSOLUTELY need a portable version of their games, simply because it's where they always sold the most, and since the vita is dead, they have no choice but to support the switch. EA and Activision never needed to depend on handheld sales and it's never gonna change.
@electrolite77,
To be honest I never expected brand new AAA titles to come to the Switch, but older games I thought would be a given, once the user base expanded.
Mass Effect 3 on Wii U were wonderful and it's online co-op were populated for years. Wii U Version had 9 of 11 DLC's on disc too. Wii U version even utilized the touch pad. This proper port were done by Tantalus/Straight Right. Master of Wii U ports. They also remastered Zelda TPP for Nintendo to 1080p, and made the new version of Deus EX 3.
The sad part is that Wii U got ME 3 at the same time as 360 and PS3 got whole trilogy.
I would rather see Dragon Age: Origins on the Switch. Not only is it one of BioWare's best games, it's among the best RPGs ever made.
Fans: We want Mass Effect Trilogy and Persona 5 on Switch NOW!!!!
EA and Atlus: So what you're telling me is you want another Fifa 18 and Persona Warriors.
Mass Effect 3: Special Edition for the Wii U was one of the best games I've ever played. It may not have been played by many people and it may have been ignored because it was only the third game without the whole series but the comics really brought me into the universe and then the game itself.... Was stunning.
Again most people might not be aware of it but the controls of the Wii U edition were out of this world. The game even had unique exclusive special weapons and had most of the expansion packs. The way you interact on the map was so fun. It is sad the Wii U failed because I just loved the options a whole interactive screen gives you. I will always go back to this and to games like Arkham City on Wii U and all these (few) third party editions on the Wii U because there is no platform like it, no control where you have so much more than just a few buttons. Nothing feels to me more next gen than the Wii U to this day. And Mass Effect was one of the best examples.
@OorWullie it’ll be a duo pack of 1 and 2 (1 on cartridge, 2 as downloadable) with 3 listed as TBD 😂
@Casual_Gamer95 I’m assuming they’re paying close attention to Borderlands and Bioshock in terms of sales AND playthrough before they take the next steps
@johnvboy
Same here. It’s the ports and remasters missing the Switch that puzzles me.
@Allspice sad huh.. ive been extremely hyped the moment the rumors of ME Remastered started surfacing.. then the realization tht we wont be getting it and now then theres this false hope thrown again. Damn lol i dont want to get my hopes up too much
Loved ME3 on the Wii U! Its the only one I played, but I heard ME2 was more sprawling, and RPG like in it's NPC locations. Would love to have that on the Switch since I missed it on 360.
@dumedum feel the same way about my experience on Wii U (and for Arkham City)
I played the trilogy and loved it on the 360. Would totally buy it on the Switch. But EA being EA, which are lazy, will not make this happen anytime soon.
I think the fact there are so many hardcore Mass Effect fans willing to buy the game multiple times (myself included), they'd be missing out massively by ignoring the Switch. Especially as it's the console with the largest userbase right now and the OT would run extremely well on the hardware.
I think we are more likely to get a Mass Effect 3 Wii U port on the Switch than this collection...
I found mass effect 3 boring that’s all I’ve played
Even the Legendary Edition could easily be ported to the Switch. I mean... the while trilogy is from Elder Scrolls: Skyrim time frame... years before games like The Witcher 3. Both games got ported to the Switch and especially Skyrim runs amazing on the Switch. I see no reason why the Mass Effect Trilogy can't run on the Switch. When the Trilogy was announced, I really expected it to come to the Switch too and was actually looking forward to it, to finally play it on the go. It's my all time favorite Game trilogy.
I don't see why not this isn't coming for the Nintendo Switch since it can handle those 3 games very well. I'd get it day one.
I am sure they would love to sell old games over and over on more platforms instead of the costly practice of actually making new games.
@Jeronan I think what is holding a port back would be UE3 which the Legendary Editions are reporting running on a modified version of (there are games on UE3 on Switch, but required a fair amount of work to get the games up and running). I think they want to focus on the platforms where there is an established fanbase and where UE3 works on out of the box with minimal work. They are not against bringing the Legendary Edition to Switch, they just probably want to focus on the Xbone and PS4 versions before they attempt to port UE3 to Switch and optimize for.
EDITED FOR CLARITY
Really hope they make this happen! I've never played the Mass Effect games but would love to try. Just never owned the other consoles so wasn't able to play them. Then when I did buy a PS4, I had so many other games to play I just never got around to this series.
This will never happen. EA won't put anything good on the NS and will never put anything good on the NS.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi what is a nintendo switch
