Re: Soapbox: 30 Years Later, Super Metroid's Foreboding Atmosphere Is Still Unmatched

JoeM103

My history with Super metroid is maybe a little strange compared to some. I had never played it growing up but my all time favourite game was Metroid Prime for the Gamecube.

Fast forward to around 7-8 years ago with the rise of the GDQ events I found myself watching a speedrun of super metroid and could not believe how amazing the game was. The music and visuals just blew me away and I was hooked. Unfortunately I did not own a SNES so I didn't actually get to play the game for quite a long time, but I watched loads of speedruns of the game and got into watching the randomiser races, until my wife bought me a SNES mini.

Playing the game for the first time after appreciating it for so long was surreal. I absolutely loved experiencing the game properly and I now go back to it often. It gave me even more respect for what the speedrunners are able to do because my only criticism of the game is that the control scheme I found quite difficult to get used to. I think If they ever were to remaster this game with Dread controls it would be an absolutely perfect game for me. That being said, as it stands, it is a solid 99/100 and most definitely deserving of all the hype it gets. Truly a contender for greatest game of all time.

Re: Feature: 12 Nintendo Games That Deserve An HD-2D Remake

JoeM103

@larryisaman For me the thing that made Dread so good was the atmosphere it creates. Don't get me wrong, it plays very smooth and I really enjoyed it but I think Super Metroid just takes the top spot for immersion, story telling and the controls for Samus are, in my opinion, perfect. The menuing between missiles, power bombs etc could be better but it was limited for the controller at the time.
What I would want is the exact same game but with a new skin over the top to make it more up to date and a way to button map to get around the menuing.

Re: Reggie: Nintendo Was Working On A Device Like Xbox's Adaptive Controller

JoeM103

My brother in law is crazy about games but struggles to play due to having cerebral palsy. I've tried to get hold of an adaptive controller but because he mainly plays his switch or playstation he wanted something he would be able to use easily for them without having to reconnect everything each time.

We found an amazing charity in Oxford (UK) called Special Effect that works like a library for bespoke accessible controllers. You can go and try out what they've got, borrow kit to see how you get on with it, and commission them to make a controller that best fits your requirements.

Re: Poll: What's Your Game Of The Year 2022 So Far?

JoeM103

I don't know what's going on with me at the moment. I genuinely haven't seen 1 new game that has excited or even interested me this year. I'd like to pick up The Stanley Parable but as it's a port it seems a waste for GOTYSF. I will admit Neon White has pricked my ears up but if I'm truly honest I probably won't end up buying it. It feels like all the new games are all the same these days. Big JRPG's, Strategy or sports games, all of which are just not my bag.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Introduces Mysterious New Character, Here's Your First Look

JoeM103

How many times do I need to let myself get excited about a new sonic game only to be disappointed? Apparently I haven't hit the limit yet because I cannot wait to pick this up. I so want this to be Sonic's answer to Mario Odyssey or Zelda BOTW.

I know they haven't been received by everyone the same but I think the new enemies seem more grown up than the previous stylings.

@Mattock1987 Holiday normally means around xmas.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #98 - Super Mario Strikers

JoeM103

I prefer the EU version, I like the simplicity of the artwork and I think the font they've used for the title looks a lot better. I think I like it because its very different to nintendo's usual style. Both of them remind me of the old kids comics I used to read like the Beano and Dandy so that's cool as well.

Re: Backlog Club: Week Zero, June - Return Of Backlog Club, Return Of The Obra Dinn

JoeM103

I love this idea of a backlog book club. I think I'll be dipping in and out when a game is selected for the month on a game that is actually in my backlog though. I've been working hard this year to try to get through it and I'm only about 25% done at this point. It's gunna be hard to stick to that rule for next month though as out of the three I've recently completed Ori but haven't even touched Celeste or Hollow Knight yet.

Re: Negative Fan Reaction To 'Return To Monkey Island' Made Its Creator 'Sad'

JoeM103

I haven't played Monkey Island before but I think it looks great!
Surely they way to keep everyone happy is to make it so that you can switch art styles with the original like they did with Wonderboy. When I played that game I hadn't played the original but I really liked the way that they had catered to the hard core fans without putting off newcomers. I realise that of course this creates a lot more work for the creators but I think having a feature like this could surely warrant a higher price.

Re: Konami Just Surprise-Launched A Brand New Action Platformer On Switch

JoeM103

I have no idea which was announced earlier as this is the first I've seen of Skelattack but it surprised me that they would name the protagonist 'Skully'. Not only is it really on the nose but there's a game releasing in August called Skully as well. It seems like there's a fine line between a memorable name and one that feels very unimaginative. Other than this minor gripe the game looks pretty cool and I'll look forward to some reviews.

Re: Xbox Adaptive Controller Allows Inspiring Gamer To Play Animal Crossing On Switch

JoeM103

Does anyone know where I can get one of these controllers? And how much they are?
My Brother-in-Law has cerebral palsy and loves his switch but has to either struggle with the tiny buttons or watch someone else play for him. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't get him down, but if this could make his experience better it would be awesome.

Also if anyone has any info on how to connect it up or experience with it, I would really appreciate the insight.

Re: Nintendo Has Worked To Escape Its 'Childish' Reputation, Says Miyamoto

JoeM103

@Ainz Yeah I get you, Oldschool gaming used to let you change about with loads of stuff. Pokemon used to have the different colour pallets and borders you could choose from and Tetris with its different music. I know games are way more advanced now but yeah it was cool.

Tell me about it mate what with family life, work and taking the dog out for walks even if I do get chance to fire up the Switch its normally not for longer than an hour tops.

Re: Nintendo Has Worked To Escape Its 'Childish' Reputation, Says Miyamoto

JoeM103

@Ainz 100% agree. The original purpose and why the internet was created was to give a worldwide platform to communicate and share and was the main reason it was made an open domain that everybody can use. A browser would be ideal but i would be happy with more accessibility through apps. To be honest at the moment I'd be happy with another teaser trailer for Prime 4 haha. What do you mean by being able to customise within the apps?

Just been having a look through your listed games wanna trade codes? I could do with someone showing me how to use this discord anyway

Re: Nintendo Has Worked To Escape Its 'Childish' Reputation, Says Miyamoto

JoeM103

@Ainz I will admit it would be nice to have some of the quality of life features that just come as standard on other systems like the friend messaging. The other thing I've always thought is why aren't there more applications? Netflix, Spotify, a video maker so you could use your capture button to create videos? I know that people in the States can use Hulu and I dont know if there are others.

Oh man I would love to have themes, would be so cool to be able to put a Metroid or MarioKart one in. Imagine how cool they could make them, not only having the background image but changing the sounds you hear when unlocking the Switch

Re: Nintendo Has Worked To Escape Its 'Childish' Reputation, Says Miyamoto

JoeM103

@Ainz While I agree that in a lot of ways the Nintendo online services have notoriously been limited and behind the times, I also think that some of those limitations are in place for good reason. One of the main problems I had as an Xbox 360 owner was anytime i played an online multiplayer game I had to put up with listening to players (normally children) shouting obscenities through their microphones. I know you can normally mute other players in games but that's still only something that you would do after getting fed up with hearing it. As a new dad who wants to enjoy gaming with my son and, providing I am fortunate enough to have them, more children to come, I think the limitations on who you can talk to online are actually a great way to avoid this type of behaviour and using the platform as a way to bully people.

Sorry for the long comment, I hope it doesn't come across as a lecture. Just thought I'd offer up another point of view.
