Re: Miyamoto Views Games As 'Products', Not 'Works Of Art', Says Ex-Nintendo Dev

Jeyl

Bleach is a product. Toilet paper is a product. Even tiny wooden sticks called 'Toothpicks' is a product. Are they engaging, immersive or go on to develop a status that's celebrated with others across the world? I don't think so.

Games can be BOTH art and a product. A piece of art is trying to illicit an emotional response that leaves you feeling fulfilled that you wouldn't get in your eveyday life. A product is just that. Something that you'll need for a moment and forget just as quickly.

Miyamoto's view that games are "not art" has always made certain Nintendo products mediocre. Super Mario Galaxy getting a sequel? Give it less of a story. More variety of toads? No, make them all the same. It's disappointing.

Re: Soapbox: Where The Heck Is Fallout 3 On Switch?

I voted that it should get some upgrades which pretty much means ensuring it can run without crashing every 30 minutes like it used to on my PS3. Game crashes hindered my experience A LOT on those games. Playing them on the PC with bug fixes via mod support was a game changer.

Re: Review: Castlevania Legends - A 'Vania So Poor It Got Booted From Canon

Always disappointing that the one Castlevania game with a female lead is linked to the worst of the franchise. We wouldn't get another Castlevania title with a female lead for a whole 10 years with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and 13 years later I'm still waiting for another one. I know there's Charlotte from Portrait of Ruin but she had to share the spotlight.

Re: Best Resident Evil Games Of All Time

RE2 > RE4

That's the real trick, right? RE4 is easily on my top 5 greatest games of all time's list, but it's not my favorite Resident Evil game. Resident Evil 2 for me is the pinnacle of what makes this franchise stand on it's own amongst the other zombie giants. The characters are memorable, the enemies are actually scary and the setting of Raccoon City has become a staple for the franchise across all the mediums. You can play Resident Evil 2 and not once confuse it with any other zombie series out there. It's that good.

Re: Translation of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Japanese Ending Prompts Interesting Debate

One thing we all must remember is that just because Ganon may be truly gone in Breath of the Wild, it does not mean he's gone in the other time lines. This is just the timeline that finally managed to expunge him completely, which given what Ganon has turned into in Breath of the Wild I think is appropriate.

We can always go to another Zelda universe to fight Ganon again, but I also wouldn't mind moving forward with this time line and seeing what new possibilities there will be that have nothing to do with Ganon. Zelda games have done it successfully in the past, it can do it again.

Re: Video: Wii U Version Of Slender: The Arrival Gets Its Own Terrifying Trailer

I actually played this game when it was still v0.9.7 on my Mac. While the remake of the 'Eight Pages' level is decent, it's the underground mine that scared the crap out of me. Large open spaces in the dark, and there's this 'kid' wearing a mask and a hoodie chasing after you. It may not sound very scary compared to Slendy, but trust me. Seeing this kid running towards you in a very long stretch hallway was enough to make me fee uncomfortable with the idea of playing that level ever again.

I heard that the Steam version which actually adds extra material is a pretty good improvement, and from what I see in this trailer, looks like that's the version we'll be getting.

Re: Mario History: Super Mario All-Stars - 1993

I LOVED the added backgrounds, especially the ones that were animated. Wish I could get a plain gif of the ones with waterfalls in them.

Also, does anyone think it's strange that the main title theme for Super Mario Bros. 3 is a remix of the original Super Mario Bros. underwater music?

Re: Mario History: Super Mario Bros. 3 - 1990

I was six years old when I got this game. I can still remember loving the previous Mario Brothers to death, but what made 3 special was one newly added mechanic. Mario could fly.

When you're six and you've always been used to being on the ground, having Mario fly was the closest thing to experiencing what flying was like. It was amazing.

Re: Poll: Is It Time For a Fresh Alternative to the Virtual Console?

How about binding games to an account rather than your system? I lost my 3DS that had the ambassador program on it and I had to literally beg Nintendo to put it back on my replacement 3DS. I had a ton of VC, DS and 3DS game downloads that I registered with club.nintendo, but I wasn't allowed to download them on my new 3DS that I had also registered through club.nintendo. I was so desperate to have my Ambassador program that I told them I didn't care about the rest. I'd be happy to buy them again if I could just get the Ambassador Program back. I was VERY thankful when they put it on my replacement 3DS, but at the same time I thought "why does it have to be like this?".

Re: Nintendo 64x64: Turok: Rage Wars

Jeyl

One of the things that stood out for me was the female chant heard in the game's opening menu. It was nice sounding and unfortunately set the mood for a game that completely lacked one.

Reason I bring this up is because when I played Borderlands 2 earlier this year for the first time, I heard the same exact chant during during an open area's background music, which means that not only was Turok Rage Wars being cheap by using outside assets, I can probably find it as well. Now I'm searching for that chant for no other reason than to use it for my own musical purposes!

Also, this was also released in an era where each Turok game also had a handheld port. Not only was Rage Wars better on the handheld, it actually contained a story!

Re: First Impressions: Getting Creative With Mario Maker

Jeyl

A great looking start. Hopefully not the last. While making original mario levels sounds great, I would LOVE the opportunity to create levels for other Mario games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and even Super Mario Bros. 2 (Super Mario USA). I don't care if I have to get it via DLC.

I hope there's an option to make your levels look genuine without the blocky background. That sort of thing just takes away from the feeling that I've created a level for the original Mario game. And if they want to go the extra mile, give us the chance to make it look standard def, 4x3 and look like it's coming from a TV Tube. Sonic 3D on the 3DS gave us that option.

Re: A Decade After Being Bought By Microsoft, Rare Still Wants To Channel The Spirit Of Nintendo

Jeyl

I remember reading an article where Nintendo openly said they would not continue their business with Rare Ware and a short time later they were bought out by Microsoft. At first I was thinking "Well, Nintendo. Now they have the company that made some pretty outstanding titles for your systems." It was a grim outlook to be sure, especially after Rare released a teaser with Banjo, Conquer and Joanna Dark essentially worshipping the XboX.

Than they released actual games for the XboX. Sometimes Nintendo knows what it's doing.
