Fans of turn-based tactical RPGs will likely be delighted to hear that Audacity Interactive's Scarlet Republics has smashed its Kickstarter goal and will be coming to Switch in due course. It surpassed its initial €10,000 funding goal in a matter of only 10 hours, which is pretty impressive.
Here is a bit more info on the game to get you up to speed:
Scarlet Republics is what would happen if Fire Emblem had a love-child with Divinity and a Joe Abercrombie book. It’s a tactical RPG inspired by a mix of western and Japanese gameplay with a deeply interactive and immersive story.
The game is set in the vibrant and treacherous City-states of Corsano, a fantasy world inspired by the Italian renaissance and the art of Leonardo Da Vinci. The game tells a mature fantasy story of vengeance and conquest, with plenty of choice, consequence and wit.
Key Features
- Turn-Based Tactics – In Scarlet Republics you guide a squad of mercenaries in turn-based combat. The game features 7 unique classes divided over 20 playable characters. It is up to you to pick and mold your squad to suit your playstyle and strategies.
- Get Creative with Squad-Building – We have built the RPG system to match customization with organic, pseudo-random growths with a focus on squad building and gut-wrenching choices for how to grow your characters. Experimenting with different builds and synergies is a key aspect of creating your perfect mercenary company.
- Choice and Consequence – How you progress depends entirely upon your decisions. Large parts of the game, including entire battle-maps and quests, are choice specific and it is impossible to see it all in one playthrough.
- A Living, Breathing World – Inspired by the Mediterranean, the Renaissance and the vineyards and olive groves of Italy and Greece, Corsano is a land of vibrant colors, heady spices, merchant lords, pirates, politics, intrigue and, of course, war.
- Da Vinci and Tango – The game’s art style is inspired by renaissance art and the sketches of the master Leonardo Da Vinci. The soundtrack mixes classical fantasy with inspirations from tango and flamenco for a dramatic sunset vibe.
Scarlet Republics should land on Switch later this year. Will you be checking out this turn-based RPG?

But can I be a Lesbian like in Fire Emblem and Divinity?
Yes please, love that setting. Like a playable episode of the Borgias.
For the above title to be apt it would need to anime stylised, which it isn't, sure it's of interest but certainly lacks a bigger interest in it due to the lack of this.
Graphics are very good, gameplay seems solid, sound is nice, story is ok but the music is awful. I am sorry but we will die from boredom if this music will play in the background. We would prefer a much more livelier music, a more orchestrated perhaps, an epic ost maybe? I know know it's not very easy but please listen to this:

It's a fantastic track.
Lol, yeah right. Competition is good and all but I seriously doubt this'll give Fire Emblem a run for it's money.
If this is even close to the same style & quality of gameplay of Fire Emblem I'll be very interested
@nkarafo It is orchestrated, just with more flamenco stylings. NLife have done this game a massive disservice by comparing it to Fire Emblem, now we have snooty kids in the comments dismissing it because it isn’t Fire Emblem. Expecting an indie game to have the same production values as a AAA game is just nonsense. ‘We’ would prefer livelier music? I think you mean ‘I’.
That art style is a turn-off for me. It just looks too static and dark for my tastes.
Seems much closer to Banner Saga than FE from what they showed off. If it gets good reviews upon release I'll take a look.
@nessisonett
That's not entirely NLife's fault. The article header may be a bit overeager but the video makes direct reference to Fire Emblem as an inspiration in the first 30 seconds...
@nessisonett Thanks! I corrected it.
Sounds like a plan. I will be all over the physical copy!
Why does this story claim the game will arrive on Switch later this year but the Kickstarter page says April 2022?
@Rosona It actually reminds me of warhammer and thats the main reason why I am interested in this rather then fire emblem
@Heavyarms55 - To be fair, even with the success of Three Houses, Fire Emblem isn't that big or successful a franchise for Nintendo (just look at the sales for the 3DS titles), so if this game somehow managed to go big (ala Shovel Knight), I can see it possibly happening....albeit briefly (though looking at this that's probably not going to happen).
@nessisonett - To be fair, the video does list it as one of it's inspirations (along with Final Fantasy Tactics, and Divinity 2 among others) but yeah, that title is a bit much given this is an indie game, not a rival AAA title.
While this doesn't seem too bad (the premise actually sounds pretty decent imo), I can't see this distinguishing itself enough to be too successful (despite the successful kickstarter); on top of that, I'm struggling to understand why they mentioned Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics (outside of just name dropping) in addition to Divinity 2, when the game doesn't seem to have anything from the former that's not in the latter (unless you count the random stat increases upon leveling up).
This game isn't doing it for me. It just looks really boring and dark(literally too dark). There's nothing that really sticks out as great. And all the characters look like generic white dudes.
@nessisonett flamenco/tango music is great, but they're horrible choices for a strategy game.
Well I’ve read most (if not all) of Joe Abercrombie’s books, and they’re great with great writing and humour. So if that somehow filters into the game, that would be great!
This won't even make Fire Emblem acknowledge its existence.
Sorry, but it just doesn't look that interesting. Very generic.
If the story has a Joe Abercrombie vibe I might be interested as I'm a big fan of his work, but I'd probably just watch a playthrough for the story where I could skip through the combat segments.
Soon? I thought they said 2022
Looks nice, I may check it after once the game release.
Looks like it might be worth a look....
This looks really good.
If you're a Fire Emblem "purist" that upholds that status to the point of a snide attitude towards its competitors - this is a damn indie game btw - then you're not a fan of the genre at all, just a fool.
EDIT - dropped a few quid on the early backers slot (only 19 Euro) now we wait, and see what happens.
No I am home with Fire Emblem by my Binding Blade.
Abercrombie mixed with FE has me sold. Backed it.
Fire Emblem doesn’t need to “move over” lol, but this could be decent too.
There are other tactical games besides Fire Emblem. I enjoy many different tactical games to include :
Fire Emblem
Banner Saga
Divinity
Wargroove
Xcom
If this one is any good, I will certainly give it a try.
Looks great . Love these tactical RPG games . Will get this straight away when it comes out
I’ll think about trying it if I gets a retail release.
@NotoriousWhiz You forgot Langrisser.
What was the name of that adventure game with Fire Emblem style character portraits?
@Yanina Never played it.
Everything that claims to be the next Fire Emblem seems to fail by a large margin at emulating or exceeding it.
@Jayvir "Inspired" by X, and "being the next" X are two very different things.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah. This would be like telling Mario to step aside for Slime-san.
Move back Fire Emblem - this just got cancelled!
