All it takes is a cursory glance at the company's history to see that Nintendo is not one to hold back a good ol' curveball when need be. The unconventional Wii and DS took the world by storm, and the forthcoming 3DS looks set to bring the portable wows. But what about the company's next home console?
If Metroid co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto is to be believed, Nintendo is shooting for nothing less than to blow your mind.
When asked by 3D Juegos (via CVG) about Nintendo's future home console plans, Sakamoto noted that there'll probably be shock and awe of some sort.
At Nintendo we always have the obligation to surprise users with a new game console. We have never done what others have. We prefer to create something new that catches attention, and I think this will continue this time as well. Surely the new Nintendo machine will leave you all with your mouth open.
Don't expect that new machine to launch any time soon though, as CEO Satoru Iwata has earlier expressed that it could be years from now, but know that it's been cooking in Nintendo R&D for a while.
Whenever we launch any new hardware, we start working on the development of the next hardware, and the Wii is no exception. When we run out of ideas with the current hardware and cannot give users any more meaningful surprises with the technology we have, that's when we will launch the new hardware.
What would the next Nintendo console have to do to make your jaw drop?

Wii 2 with 60Hz PAL Virtual Console!!
"there'll probably be shock and awe of some sort."
That's just guessing. I hope he's right anyway.
What ever it is i'm surwe it'll be awesome!
Pointless hype.
To tell you the truth I'm in no hurry for Wii 2 or whatever they plan to call it, I have only had my Wii for about a year, still many games I have yet to play.
I'm sure others who have had it from the start will feel different but that is just my take.
Pretty sure Nintendo is focusing most of its efforts on the 3DS at this point, and that's what I think they should be talking about. When the next home console is properly announced in however many years, then I'll have some interest.
I'll hold my hype 'till I hear more about it.
Seems like the Wii's lineup is stronger than ever this year. I'd be surprised if a new console is announced any time soon.
Non-one does mind-blowing better than Ninty.
indeed im just happy to hear nintendos working on something in the home department ps if any nintendo reps here make it 100% withe the wii and possibly the game cube as that would be amazing to have double backwards compatability oh and a way of transfering the wiis data to the new console eg vc saved data and miis or else we will be forced to buy them again
Facts make the hype. And I'm not hearing any facts.
What would it take to blow my mind? Can't think of anything. Just don't want to be disappointed with stupid oversights. (Make sure you come out with a good transferring system, Nintendo.)
Games blow my mind, not consoles. Come out with Metroid Other: M 2 as a launch title, and consider my mind BLOWN.
I just read this over at CVG, too. They also said that it could be anywhere between 3 to 8 years before it`s released. cough-Bullchit-cough.... I`m betting they`ll announce it next year at E3 with a couple of hints or teases from "outside scources" like they did with 3DS. One thing i hope it has is plenty or storage. Of course, the graphics will hopefully be improved. It`ll most likely use a Wii like controller or be competable. As for what else they could revolutionize, I have no idea. unless it`s got something to do with 3D but Iwata says there will be 3D and Miyamoto says there wont. They don`t usualy start teasing about a system until it`s usualy finished, so i`m betting that it`s closer than what they`re letting on. I also think they should be hyping the 3DS more too, since it`s closer to being released. Regardless of what or when the next is it`ll probably be Aaaawsome (sorry Miz).
I agree with Kid_A
What would make my jaw drop?
A new controller system that you have to put in your mouth and to make Mario jump, you have to open your mouth (drop your jaw) the farther you drop your jaw, the higher mario jumps.. That is what Im guessing .. Kinda like the vitality sensor. but for the mouth.
If it's something more clever than a virtual reality helmet, then I'll have my mouth open so wide that my jaws would break.
@Splat I've heard the wii sonce December 2006 and there are still many wii, GC, vc and wiiware games that I need to get.
@Punnyguy Am I the only one who doesn't like the idea of virtual reality helmets? If nintendos next console is like this then I'll need a lot of convincing to get it.
Well, here's the roadmap to one of the "mindblows" that would, er... blow my mind:
N64 = Powerful system, stunted by extremely limited media capacity cartridges
GC = Surprisingly powerful system, stunted by limited media capacity proprietary optical disc
Wii = Not extremely powerful system, media capacity is optimal enough
Ergo, the next Nintendo system will actually be cutting edge technology that can compete with the best of it's competition and have the disc capacity IN HARMONY for once.
One other mind blow would be the ability to play 3DS games right on your TV (given it's 3D capable) and the Nintendo console would be able to download off it's games to the portable 3DS.
Nothing else comes to mind and "mind blowing", but if there's one thing I know about Nintendo, they KNOW how to surprise, and MOST times, it's been for the better.
awesome more rumormongeling is all nintendo needs for the next console nothing new here to see everyone needs to move on
3d and transfer of vc and ww + better online and backwards compatible with gcn and wii games and if theres a game for gcn or wii you want but cant find dl it via nintendo store as a disk or a vc title and make dc and saturn games on vc. than ill drop my jaws
Will it close your mouth for you when you stop playing it?
The only thing I can guess is that the new system can perform a prostate exam while you're playing. Why else would it leave your mouth open?
I was hoping for actual details on the next console...lol. Well, whatever. xD
a box that plays all Nintendo games.(disks and cartridges.)
that would drop my jaw. oh what about hand held counsel touch screen controller for the 3d bluray wii2. lol. I'm sure it'll be crazy but the wii is still getting better and developers are getting insanely creative.
Electrodes connected to the brain?! Think like Mario, Be Mario!!
I smell an unveiling at next year's E3
@Kid_A: Well Nintendo usually announces new consoles about one year in advance
wii2 wii use a real life pikachu as a controller
I remember being fed the info before the Wii about playing old Nintendo games on it... I was thinking it was going to have slots for the old carts
All jokes aside though, that would be one ugly machine, having a slot (or adjustable "slot") that can fit NES, SNES, and N64 cartridges (and for good measure, another slot that fit GB and GBA games).
I will make one final wish though: Instead of waiting on the VC to come though with a humongous amount of games that may "never ever come", I would really, REALLY love the option to have an emulation "rip" on the new console that can literally allow you to plug in said dusty, old cartridge and upload it for easy play on the new console. That would bypass all the legal and liscensing mumbo-jumbo and finally allow the VC to become truly what EACH of us WANTS it to be.
Dang my dreaming heart, it can't technically be THAT hard to do...
_Shock isn't always a good thing.
Hmm, leave my mouth open, eh? What if Sakamoto is being literal, and the next console actual cooks and feeds you edible goods! Or cleans your teeth. One of the two.
Well, if it's anything like the shock of the announcement and revelation of the 3DS, it will still blow our minds...
He meant it literally. The new controller will be strapped to your tongue.
Mind-blowing technology from Nintendo is certainly something to look forward to, but it looks like the future is moving more towards portability and Nintendo's upcoming 3DS will have that sewn up in the coming year. I have to ask: who really has time for non-portable games in this day and age besides school-age children or for adults on vacation or days off? In this economy everyone's being overworked or under the pretense that their jobs will disappear.
Not to put a damper on potentially exciting hardware announcements/releases but with the world economy the way it is, Nintendo can't afford for the new machine to not have a sizable audience to play the console as well as the games. This goes for any potential upcoming hardware at this point in time.
I'm not getting my hopes up for anything yet but I'm sure I'll love it. Even if it's just because Nintendo's logo is on it. XD
But seriously, I'll probably buy Nintendo's next console without a doubt. Probably wait for a bit to avoid the launch console issues, which happens sometimes, then I'll buy it with a game or two. Whether it'll leave my mouth open or not.
The Nintendo Holodeck...
The Nintendo Holodeck...
DO WANT
There's nothing here but rumour, and rumours gimme tumors. The new console will be outstanding!
What I would like for... whatever...:
Ability to check messages via Menu (even when playing games)
Send messages/pictures/videos from home console to 3DS
Only one Friend Code for the console, so if you want them as a permanent friend
Ability to upload your games collection to your online profile
Invite friends to join N-Parties
Monthly N-Competitions (like MKWii challenges)
A keyboard that snaps onto your controller
Built-in controller charger
Buy games, movies, pictures, Miis from N-Store
"blow your mind"? yup, I think it's official. Nintendo's next system is cocaine.
It prints money, lol.
@BellGoRiiing: it's gonna print money from our open mouths? D:
this is all, really, old news. especially the "already in development" comment... how many times have we heard that now? besides, he seems to hold no secrets, contrary to what the headline and photo caption suggest. really, i'm fine with my Wii. when there's real news on the next console, i'll be as stoked as anyone to hear it, but if there's no news, let's not just dress up something unremarkable to sound newsworthy.
Food dispenser?
Beverage dispenser!
Orlick dispenser
I'm still betting that they'll drop optical media at some point. The capacity and cost benefits are evaporating as we speak while poor performance is as big an issue as ever. As overall system performance improves that bottleneck becomes even more crippling. I'll go even further than that, I am willing to continue to speculate that their next home console will have no moving parts.
Obviously if they did this next year-ish we'd be talking about a 30GB SSD inside the thing and people would bitch about capacity. Probably short sighted for capacity but damn would it be worth the effort. Personally I don't need another media centre, I just want to kill long corridors, slow doors and ancient elevators. I want to be able to push the on button and the thing to spring instantly to life. I want absurdly fast load times for DLC also.
If they did that as well as some obvious performance improvements as well as 1080p (seriously, why wouldn't they?) then I'd be ecstatic. Refinements to controllers and whatever bleeding-edge graphics means these days pale in comparison at this point.
Shock can be bad...
STILL HYPED, THOUGH!!!
How about a system with modules that you put at the corners of the TV screen that enable 3D images without glasses while remaining in 1080p? Or a console that doesn't need a TV period?
Virtual Reality!
It will probably be in 3D to match the 3DS.
i'll be happy with it if you only have to have one friend code and have better graphics those are the things the wii needs.
Something dawned on me while reading a few of these comments. Pretty much every system Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft make, seems to hold somthing back. Look at the memory, if it`s not the memory, it`s controllers, and now there`s the whole holding back downloadable content crap to bleed some extra money outtah people, not to mention additional fees for things like online functions. I`m not saying Nintendo`s guilty of all of that stuff but they do have a nasty tendancy to try and overshadow things with some gimmicks at times, too. Hopefully they know that We know more than they seem to think when it comes to this stuff. I for one, wont be buying all of that extra nonesense, this time around. As for playing games of old, I could live with or without it. This isn`t all about the older stuff anyway. They really need to just keep their mouths shut until the thing`s ready, instead of just stringing us along.
Whatever Nintendo have up there sleeves, sound like a waste of money.
Since to me the horrible is a failure of a game system and has some of the most horrible games ever known I can't wait for Nintendo's next console.
N is trying to get ppl hyped for their next machine. They must be starting to feel the profits from Wii, & it's related games/accessories/etc. starting to sag to the point they(N) feel it.
awesome picture - the man looks totally like john and yoko son ))) - imagine all the people - plaaaaaying a new wii!!!!
I don't know what to think, cant think of anything that would blow people's minds. Best I can think of is a release day price tag under $200, if they can do that and make a profit then they deserve an award.
Good news is the hardware couldn't get more disappointing than Wii. Please Nintendo, give us a powerful system next generation with up to date hardware, enough disc space, enough media capacity, proper online multiplayer / features, HD visuals, 5.1 Dolby Digital support, ... I mean Nintendo should have enough money nowadays to develop a competitive console again.
Ugh. The hype monster rears its head. I'm sure someone else already said that, though.
That shiit happens to Nintendo... ALL THE TIME!
I know I am buying it regardless. The Wii is officially my favorite console this gen, and I own a PS3 as well. When it comes to play "time", I am like 80% of the time playing a Wii game. It captured my imagination despite the technicals. I can't wait to see what Ninty has up it's sleeves next.
It'll have a DVD player.
Still, that's an awful lot of hype/comments for a page about a comment.
I want a nintendo console that does not make me want to get an Xbox 720
Can't imaging what it will be but I'm sure Nintendo won't let us down. I just hope they include a better friend system like on the PS3/360.
My guess is that when you boot up the console, you enter a physical limbo where the laws of space and time known to us do not apply.
You had infinite space for any motion controls, yet any person who runs the system, be it from any given point of the universe and/or time, will be capable of playing locally with you. Also, the timeline of your earthly surrounding would freeze, so you can play as long as you want, without wasting any time. It should also not need neither a TV nor a power supply.
Hmm, what would I want in the console?
1. High end graphic power ~ so great graphics can be achieved in games more often, & more importantly better graphics hardware makes it loads easier on the cpu allowing it to do other things. Graphics don't have to compete w/ other system's graphics, just be uber-powerful on their own stand/pedestal.
2. Large internal storage capacity, & ability to expand storage capacity
3. Extremely Large ram size
4. built-in, & upgradable firmware to be able to interact w/ both a desktop &/or laptop, possibly for storing game saves, & other important data. Maybe even legally be allowed to make backup/storage copies of entire games, & we could register them w/ N so they would be legal copies N woulds allow us to both make, & possess. 1 copy per game.
5. Allow individuals a "programming environment" of sorts to have a bit of freedom, even if only slightly limited/restricted for the purpose of not infringing, or violating trademarks/patents, for the purpose of allowing legal home-brew apps that don't violate any copyright/trademark/patents/etc.
6. On any concerns of privacy/safety, implement really better than decent locks/blockers/parental controls, & a decent friend system, that in addition supports bwc w/ Wii friend codes for Wii games.
7. Definite ability to transfer Wii dlc/saves/etc. to new machine
8. Media center console of sorts
9. Easily supports wireless, & wired networking, w/ the further enhancement of the internal network device being physically, & firware upgradable, so during the console's lifespan the console can adapt to newer networking protocol/speeds/etc.
And Sakamoto recently said that the Wii successor is "similar to the NES." WHAT?!
I hope it will be something that gives hardcore gamers the power/community they want, without sacrificing the accessability or the focus on simple controls.
Even if all they churn out is a Super Mario Galaxy 3 in 720p, I'll be one happy camper
I hope it not only has 1080p, but support for 3D TV's. As a matter of fact, if that's all it had that the Wii doesn't, I'd probably be content
Hmmm, mind-blowing, eh? For me, that would be a system that's able to play ANY game, regardless of what system it's playes on, AND the ability to transfer DSiWare and WiiWare games to and from the hard drive!
If it has a real signature from Sigeru Miyamoto! But otherwise, I'm pretty easily impressed, HD graphics, better sensors would make it disappointment-proof for me.
The way I see it, the new customers that Nintendo has with the Wii might not nessecarly be repeat customers when it comes to new consoles. The good news is that they generated enough revenue that I could see Nintendo doing cutting edge console, but the the down side is that it will cost, them and us.
Nintendo usually takes a while to bring out new consoles, so why the big rush/hype to get a 2nd version out? That is just a bit like playstation and I love nintendo for being nintendo!
@MasterGraveheart "Or a console that doesn't need a TV period?"
Say hello to the 3DS! Oh, and the Game & Watch, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, DS, DS Lite and DSi, not to mention various other competitors' releases.
Unless you meant the previously-mentioned Nintendo Holodeck. I don't foresee those entering the consumer market any time soon...
What if the 'Wii 2' was more powerful than the PS3 and you didn't need a 3D TV to see 3D(most likely still with glasses) and backwards compatibility with GCN and Wii!? I mean, it could happen, knowing that it is releasing years from now.
