I’m going to find a way to start incorporating “Portrait of Financial Ruin” into my everyday conversations now. I think it might be the funniest subheading I’ve ever seen on here, and there have been plenty of quality ones so well done whoever did it!
Just wanna hop in and echo others sentiments about the soundtrack! At least half a dozen songs I still remember and hum to this day, and haven’t played the game in…20 years? Best OST on the GBA to me!
I always thought it would be cool if they did a story mode like f zero gx. You could race to catch bowser in his castle as he throws down random obstacles, and if you trigger a switch at the end, you’d make him fall into some lava. Or you could gather deviously placed red coins in a Yoshi level while racing against hostile shy guys. You could have different zones with bosses at the end that need to be raced or beaten in an old school balloon battle mode level. So much they could do!
@NorthwestEagle Enough with the flagpole? What is this blasphemy you speak of?? Admittedly, my nostalgia commands such an antiquated marker of success. But what next would be on the chopping block? Coins? Warp pipes? Breakable bricks? Where would the madness end!? 😂
@KingDunsparce Good observation! Yea I certainly hope the difficulty is there as it has been in the later levels in most of the 2D games, especially those post game bonus levels! I just hope Nintendo is keeping a lot of the level designs secret for now and doesn’t want to show their hand straight away.
I’ve literally never been disappointed in a Mario 2D platformer, and that includes every “New” iteration. But this feels off somehow, like the levels seemed to be barren with no enemies and hardly any actual platforming? I know it’s too early to judge it based on the trailer, but I honestly thought it wasn’t a mainline Mario game. More like a racing/endless runner type multiplayer game? I just don’t know what to make of it! Maybe it’ll make sense down the line..
I’ve always wanted to see a Zelda movie come to fruition, but now I can’t help but think of that well known quote: There are two great tragedies in life. One is not getting what one wants. The other…is getting it. But maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised I guess?
Super excited to play this, the underground segments sound just up my alley. Hopefully I can just ignore the crafting/resource gathering aspects like I did with BOTW. Some reviews have me worried saying the crafting is more prominent this go around, but we shall see. Also can’t wait to check out the traditional style dungeons!
Still genuinely irked about the lack of worldwide retail release (and at regular price, not this $80 nonsense). Seems like Square left a lot of money on the table here, but maybe they’re banking on lots of digital sales?
I’ll admit I scoffed at the Barbie game, then a quick google search showed me that it was the first commercially successful video game aimed squarely at girls. Was even the 9th best selling PC game of ‘96. Very impressive!
Man it just stinks that I am totally against subscription services; Metroid fans are eating well now! But I’m definitely happy to see the series getting so much love lately!
This looks awesome! I would love to see a complete edition with all DLC release on cartridge, that would be the cherry on top of an already very tasty cake!
I got my SNES Jr with Yoshi’s Island as a bundle. It was the first console/game I ever owned. Needless to say it was mind blowing, and is still my favorite SNES game. I remember it took me about a year to 100% it all, especially those brutal unlockable levels. I’ve been waiting to see it topped for almost 30 years now, though admittedly that may due to nostalgia, but I really still think it’s just a masterpiece.
@canaryfarmer Right? It still blows my mind that this exists on switch and Trigger doesn’t. I hope that Square is working on a HD-2D remaster of some sort, then I will forgive them this blatant transgression 😂
@Bizzyb yea I think you’re right. I guess Metroid is still trying to shake the red headed step child syndrome even despite Dread’s success. Hopefully this remaster helps a bit!
I am rather curious as to why it seems to be selling out everywhere, is that the normal case with big releases like this? Or is Nintendo not considering this a big release? Heck I still found it odd that it just kinda slid in during the direct without any build up or teasing whatsoever…
@MajorTom I'm simply saying it’s a lot easier to name one person as opposed to a whole team, so I can understand why they took the streamlined approach. You’re free to infer whatever else, that’s your choice.
@MajorTom difference is one person wrote the article, not an entire staff. Honestly I don’t even know what you’re arguing at this point. I know what a remaster is, this is clearly not plagiarism, not even close. I don’t understand what point you’re trying to prove here, you think this credits issue is liken to plagiarism? I strongly disagree. My opinion is that the credits to me are fine as they are. Obviously many disagree. You’re free to do so as well. But I’d like to stop talking about it now, it’s unnecessary at this point, as I’ve said all I can on the matter.
@MajorTom I was responding to a statement that literally said, to update an article and put one’s name INSTEAD of someone else’s…?So I’m not sure you understand what plagiarism is. This is an entire team doing a remaster, and still giving credit to the original team. Either way, it was only said to make light of the debate, and I’m not interested in continuing it further personally since my opinion in the matter isn’t going to change.
@YoshiF2 I mean my opinion is that I thought the credits as they currently are do suffice, even with the general acknowledgment. Of course they could be easily changed, and perhaps they will, but I just don’t think it’s this travesty most are making it out to be. My opinion is that it detracts from the remaster team, as I stated a while ago, and I’m not alone in that sentiment as the credits exist like this in dozens of remasters. But that’s all, I’m not trying to spend the rest of the night in debate, I’ve got a three year old that will be relentless in the morning lol
@YoshiF2 there’s no room for discussion? Then what have I been wasting my time discussing this with you for? I simply don’t share your opinion, what a concept.
@YoshiF2 the difference is the original team still has the original game that they got credit and praise for. I believe the remaster team should get the spotlight here, simple as that.
@Supaguy my original point still stands. I think the new team should get the spotlight this time for the Remaster. And the old team was still given credit, even if it was just in the general sense.
@GooseLoose1 Must be an old habit, but you would be surprised how many times I’ve seen arguments come from simple things like someone misconstruing one’s opinion as fact and then telling them why they’re wrong. I prefer to nip that sort of thing in the bud!
I’m in the camp that feels the credits are good as they are. My argument against the more extensive detailed credit for the original team is because it detracts from the team that actually DID the remastering. The original staff already had their credits/spotlight in the OG game. I think the new team should get the majority of the praise here for the work they’ve done with this remastering, just as the original team has no shortage of praise for creating one of the best games of that era. The original team has received acknowledgment here in a clear concise manner. I feel that works personally. And I certainly don’t think it was some spiteful jab or a low blow from Nintendo/Retro to purposefully not include the original credits. All just my opinion obviously!
I hate to echo the somewhat negative sentiments in here, but the trailer just didn’t grab me in any way. I’m just a big fan of the themed dungeons/temples and I’m starting to think I was wrong to expect them to be in this game.
I’m not buying it right away, but if I was considering it, that’s a hard sell the more I think about it. And it’s not about the $10 dollar price difference. For me, it’s more about the principle. I feel like they are doing this with no announcement of a general price increase like Sony did. They are doing this specifically with Zelda because they know they can get away with it. It just feels like such a “Nintendo” move, and that’s coming from a huge Nintendo fan. No last gen game on the same cartridge format they’ve been using for the past 6 years on the same 6 year old hardware can justify the obvious cash grab here IMO. Unless there’s some details missing that will be clarified in the direct…
This is why I always like to be a year or two behind thanks to my backlog. Always get great deals come Black Friday, or individual store sales throughout the year.
F-Zero Ultimate with all tracks from the original, X, and GX plus a track editor and online. Surely I can’t be wrong every direct right? Also Gamecube Mini shadow drop, available at retail tomorrow😂
@JohnnyC I agree with your sentiment. I’m thrilled to see Elden Ring doing so well. To have a game that has a robust (and complete) single player mode, no micro transactions, no hand holding, high difficulty, deep and diverse gameplay mechanics, in addition to it looking and playing phenomenally, do so well in this climate is refreshing, regardless of whether it was overhyped or not.
Was well deserved! It was the game I spent the most time with this year by far, and I didn’t want to play anything else for a while after I beat it, which to me is always a sign of one of the greats.
The WiiU is still one of my all time favorite Nintendo consoles, and even today it gets a lot of use thanks to its VC and it’s ability to run GameCube games natively. Just a little tinkering and you’ve got a retro powerhouse that can run pretty much anything you throw at it. I’ve still got more hours on it than my switch, so far anyway!
That’s super awesome that they’ve done this, must have taken quite a bit of work! Hopefully they’ll be left alone, at least for a while… I still have a couple dozen of my favorite issues, like Yoshi’s Island and OOT; it’s always a nice nostalgia boost to flip through them.
@Tom-Massey Thank you for clarifying that bit; I was thrown by the term “garbage” and felt a strange need to defend the show. I now see what you were going for! Also, I apologize if my comment sounded snarky!
The show is light (but good) entertainment; you wouldn’t have lost your credibility if you ended it there. I’m not sure I care for reviewers that spout their opinion as objective fact. I’m also not sure why I’m still awake and feeling the need to defend Cobra Kai as a decent romp of a tv show at 1:00 in the morning but oh well…
@AtlanteanMan well said, I felt the exact same way when Switch came out. I blame myself for getting my hopes up. Sure, Nintendo could have given us the option to purchase legacy titles, but they decided to go all in on the subscription model. It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth (after buying and rebuying titles on Wii and WiiU), which is why this generation I’ve supported Xbox more than Nintendo, because they at least seem to partially care about game preservation, and they give options to consumers. I’ve never paid for Gamepass, but I’ve got a huge library of games from OG Xbox up to current generation, and the kicker is that the games play better than they did originally. Nintendo could learn a lot from Microsoft in this space, but I know they won’t!
