Re: Fire Emblem Engage Characters - Every New And Returning Hero Revealed So Far

Frontiersmann

I still see Alear and can only think of Toothpaste-chan, but the supporting cast looks much better.

Also it's nice to see Hector and Lyn in that tapestry, and Celica appear in the game in any capacity. Shadows of Valentia and Blazing Blade were the best ones imo. I don't recognize too many of these other characters, the way they've been stylized.

Edit: Looks like Micaiah and Roy are in there. On second look, it appears that the one holding the axe is Ike, not Hector.

Re: The Metroid Dread Vibes Are Strong In Action-RPG Platformer 'Trinity Fusion'

Frontiersmann

Yeah I'm on team "this looks an awful lot like Metroid Dread."

Doesn't leave a great first impression, with it looking so derivative on first glance. I'll credit that the game may have its own concepts going, but without having played dread in the last six months, I could have mistaken those settings for areas in Dread. And the face clamping thing looks very heavily inspired by EMMI.

Re: Random: Unseen Screens Of Cut Super Mario 64 Stage Found In 1996 Nintendo Report

Frontiersmann

@Slowdive was there ever a showcase or a screenshot of Mario in a room with multiple Mr. I's?

I seem to remember seeing something similar in a commercial or a magazine back in 1995 or 1996. I remember the first time I defeated one of those eyeballs by running circles around it, and dreading the thought of having to deal with three or four of them at once.

It's over 25 years ago, I wonder if my mind is playing tricks on me.

Re: Feature: Nintendo eShop Selects - June 2022

Frontiersmann

This month was packed with great releases.

Capcom Fighting Collection has some great stuff and was the only new game I picked up this month, though I did also buy the Cuphead DLC. Very happy with both of those.

Was Mario Strikers not at least 8/10?

Portal collection and Shredder's Revenge are on the wishlist for me, along with Mario Strikers. That summer sale was also very good.

Re: The State Of Switch Survey Highlights NSO, Joy-Con Drift And Hopes For A Long Generation

Frontiersmann

For me digital vs physical comes down to three questions:

1. Where do I want to store the game data?

It is enormously handy to have certain games available without swapping cartridges, especially if they are things that would only get played for a little while in between longer stuff like Zelda. I definitely prefer it to cartridges, except that micro SD still has size limitations. So I will also buy physical games to reduce the amount of storage that the SD card needs to use.

2. How many other people in my family will want to play this?

I own Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and several others physically because they can be inserted into my wife's switch (or our damaged TV-only switch which I let my kids use with less supervision) and it'll work without any fuss or oversight, or having to manage account credentials or access to the eShop.

I own Street Fighter 30th anniversary, BlazBlue, and a few others as digital downloads because only I will play them.

3. What is cheaper?

Usually but not always a determining factor. Publisher sales on the eShop make this a bit of a wash.

Re: UK Charts: Kirby And The Forgotten Land Gobbles Up The Top Spot

Frontiersmann

@Marios-love-child The style of this game so far is very much a "get from a to b" platformer, but the addition of some 15 to 20 different powers that Kirby can use, imo, makes Kirby like the improv jazz version of Mario. There are lots and lots of ways to approach the game. I'd say difficulty is about on par with most Mario games. Not really tough in early stages, some of the optional content is challenging enough that it'll take several attempts, and you might need to go back to the drawing board a couple of times until you get it down. It can also be a challenge to meet the target times or to set new coin collection records in each level. I personally don't feel like the game is lacking for challenge, but the difficulty really is what you make of it. The challenge certainly isn't in progressing the base content. The base content is hard enough that my son, who is new to video games and is completely obsessed with this one, struggles to get through world 3.

Comparisons to improv don't really stop with "difficulty level is what you make of it." It's also got more of an improv feel in the moment to moment gameplay. You want to use your volcano hat in a level where you really have no reason to? Nothing's really stopping you. No time limit for any level means you can explore as thoroughly as you want, or just try several sections over again. The game will feel different with abilities that change your mobility versus those with higher attack power. Miss a jump? As long as you're not asleep at the wheel, you should be fine to float back to safety.

That said, there are several times in various levels that you'll be encouraged or required to use a specific power in order to collect up each stage's hidden waddle dee (equivalent of power stars, shines, moons, etc.).

I'm getting vibes just a little bit of Super Mario Odyssey and a little of Super Mario 3d world too. But I wouldn't rely too heavily on the metaphor, Kirby games definitely have their own sort of flavor and this is 100% a Kirby game.

Re: The First Review For Kirby And The Forgotten Land Is Now In

Frontiersmann

My 3 year old and I have played the demo probably eight or nine times.

This demo turned my toddler into a gamer. Games are hard, especially if you are 3. But he can finish the demo by himself now. I'm so proud and also terrified!

Kirby Star Allies is far too challenging for him, but I am playing through it again while we wait for Friday I am experiencing the absolutely massive volume of post-game content for the first time. Hopefully "compact" offers some room for bonuses and extras.

We cannot wait for Friday! So excited!

Re: The Pokémon Company Sets Its Sights On YouTube Videos Of The Fan-Made 'Pokémon FPS'

Frontiersmann

@Daniel36 Not really.

Having watched the clips in question, it looks like that (basic FPS engine) with some basic Pokemon. But one of the legitimately cool gameplay gimmicks is boss fights.

Articuno, Zapdos and Mewtwo all had life bars and used big elemental powers that hit big sections of the arena. In Mewtwo's case he was cloning himself too.

If he had made his own monsters, it would have been a legitimately cool game.

But seeing Pikachu go ragdoll after getting shot in the face was a bit traumatizing, I am surprised the copyright holders didn't act faster.

Re: Nintendo Officially Reveals Kirby And The Forgotten Land

Frontiersmann

I have been wishing for an actual 3D Kirby game ever since Mario 64 came out. Air Ride was good but not really what I had in mind...

25 years and it finally happened! This will be a pre-order for me, very much looking forward to trying this out. But I'll try and set my expectations low.

Re: You Can't Purchase Ultra Street Fighter II From The US eShop Right Now

Frontiersmann

@ModdedInkling

Third Strike and the Alpha games are more fun than either version of SF2 but if I were going to play SF2 I would play Ultra SF2.

Anybody looking for street fighter games in the switch should buy the 30th anniversary collection instead. But if you are looking specifically to play some version of SF2 then I can tell you that the bigger roster, color customization, and HD sprites make Ultra SF2 a much more enjoyable experience than Super Turbo. Not to mention the AI is tuned better for enjoyable single player.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite SNES Games

Frontiersmann

@niner it's criminal that Wario's Woods isn't in Nintendolife's list. Also, Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Paperboy should be on the list.

My 10s are:

  • Super Metroid
  • Super Mario RPG
  • Super Mario World
  • Yoshi's Island
  • Tetris Attack
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Turtles in Time
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Super Street Fighter II
  • EarthBound

9s are too many to list.

Re: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition Multiplayer Is Region-Locked

Frontiersmann

Everybody who wants local multiplayer, I'm genuinely curious how you would implement it?

Local multiplayer only worked on the GameCube because the GBA link cable gave every single player a second, personalized screen. They can't do that on a PS4 or a switch, right? So the game would need significant changes.

As for the rest, it's better than nothing. I guess I should count myself lucky, since the people I want to play with are also in North America.

Getting this on switch, a handheld, (combined with a free version that has 13 dungeons) totally fixes the local multiplayer issue for me. It should be a major quality of life improvement over playing local multiplayer on GameCube. Even if it's true that the free version can't access the final boss.

Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You

Frontiersmann

Glad I checked the comments.

Normally if the general consensus is that the game is worse than Super Paper Mario, I would skip it completely.

Super completely failed to hold my interest and made me wary of Paper Mario games going forward. Never played any after that one, but I rate Paper Mario 64 among the most entertaining games ever made, so I want to love the franchise.

Just goes to show that you can never trust anything anybody says anymore. No idea if they're just being reactionary or review bombing. I suppose I'll play this one and make up my own mind.

Re: Carrion's Controversial Nintendo Switch Menu Icon Has Been Changed

Frontiersmann

I only thought it was sexual because of a polygon article I saw where the author made an innuendo with the clear intention of making people think about vaginas, and then accusing people of thinking about vaginas.

At first I thought it was just outrage culture but after about an hour I decided it was a good thing they changed it. Somebody would have accused them of trying to associate women with something terrifying and grotesque.

Re: Review: Rock Of Ages 3: Make & Break - Between A Rock And A Hard Place

Frontiersmann

I've been watching ACE Team's work since Abyss Odyssey came out on PS4 in 2014. Adding every one of their switch games to my wishlist.

Loved the style and premise of Abyss Odyssey, even if the execution was a tad clunky in places. Then I finally bought Rock of Ages II when it went on sale for $7, and it was a huge let down. Not engaging enough, overly complex and disorganized, etc. Can't say I'm surprised that Rock of Ages III failed to capture any attention.

Re: Talking Point: Is Nintendo Making As Many Games As It Used To?

Frontiersmann

Is it fair to count DK Tropical freeze, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE#, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, New Super Mario Bros Deluxe, Pokken Tournament, Xenoblade Chronicles definitive edition, etc.?

And can we count games on the Wii U that were brought forward from previous generations, like Twilight Princess?

I friggin' love the Wii U library, and I'm happy that big portions of it are available on Switch. But I own a Wii U. These games were already marketed to me years ago, and I bought the ones I wanted. When they release on Switch, they don't feel like new games to me.

I haven't been paying close enough attention to whether this practice has increased, but it seems like it should be accounted for in figuring out whether Nintendo has slowed down.

Re: Samurai Shodown Is Getting A Free DLC Fighter From Tencent's Honor Of Kings

Frontiersmann

@jobvd people complain about the netcode all the time, I don't know anything about it because I own it on my Switch and use WiFi so I figure it's better if I don't even try. But I'm still having fun with single player and (rarely) local versus.

The game has a slow, patient neutral, but winning neutral once can net you like 70% of a life bar. The damage is nuts. Or you can disarm your opponent and get a huge advantage.

10/10, if you already own it definitely give it a try.

Re: PSA: Remember To Update Your Joy-Con Today, As Well As Your Switch

Frontiersmann

@gameboy1975 I've got the exact same experience as KitsuneNight^^

Having purchased six N64 controllers and loved my N64 nearly to death, none of my joysticks are in great condition. The dead zone for my yellow and red controllers are huge. Green and grey are tolerable but not in good shape, and I don't remember the other two off the top of my head.

Re: PSA: Remember To Update Your Joy-Con Today, As Well As Your Switch

Frontiersmann

@PALversusNTSC

Drifting isn't caused by dirt or crisps. People who get drift aren't dirty gamers. It's caused by the way the sticks work.

There are two contact strips inside the stick, and two metal clips that rest just above them. One set each for X and Y coordinates. When the metal touches the strip, it sends the signal back to the motherboard. Depending on where the strip is contacted, it will have a different level of electrical resistance, indicating the coordinate value of the input and telling the motherboard which direction you are pointing the stick.

It would be pretty ingenious, except that the contact strips need to be made of graphite in order to work. It's basically pencil lead. Sliding or slamming the metal along the graphite will cause it to scratch, which permanently changes its electrical resistance and allows more voltage to reach the motherboard. This makes the controller register an input even when there isn't one.

If you play games like super smash bros or any rigorous platformer that requires quick reflexes and aggressive controller use, chances are good you will wear out your controllers faster.

Re: PSA: Remember To Update Your Joy-Con Today, As Well As Your Switch

Frontiersmann

Drift is a hardware issue, so if anybody is hoping that a firmware update will fix it, they've got unrealistic expectations. The most you could hope for in a firmware update is a bandaid to get an extra month of use out of your sticks. Anyway, if you are careful and you look at online guides, it is not a hard repair to perform yourself.

Separately, I'm not going to deny that joycons have a problem, but anyone who thinks N64 controllers were durable is deluding themselves. A single game of Mario Party could cause noticeable damage to an N64 joystick, particularly the tug of war mini game.
