A few weeks ago, known insider 'NateDrake' revealed on his podcast how Game Boy and Game Boy Color games would supposedly be coming to Nintendo's Switch Online service in the near future.
Eurogamer added to this - noting how "other retro platforms" are also likely to show up. While no systems, in particular, were mentioned, the same insider now says one of these other platforms is the Nintendo 64. Here's exactly what he had to say on the latest episode of his podcast:
"Eurogamer went one step further, having noted that additional platforms will also be added to Nintendo Switch Online in the future. And today I would like to add to that, yes - that information is accurate and one of the platforms that will be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online in the future is the revolutionary Nintendo 64."
While the rest of the discussion about the N64 coming to the NSO is for most parts speculative, Nate seems to think Nintendo will use this generation of games to introduce a new Switch Online price tier. In other words, you could be expected to pay more to access these games - roughly estimated to make memberships around $5 - $15 USD more per year.
"What I'm going to propose, is that when Nintendo 64 does come to Nintendo Switch Online it is going to come with a higher-priced tier - a premium version of Nintendo Switch Online, if you will."
"I don't think they would try to double the price of it... I'd come in at $30 a year, $35 would be the ceiling, any more than that I think Nintendo would be really pushing things."
Further speculation from the insider and his co-host 'MVG' touches on the "elephant in the room" being Rare's library of games (e.g. GoldenEye 007), licensing and even the fact Super Mario 64 was only recently released as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection.
While the insider is "confident" N64 will eventually appear on the NSO, he's not quite as sure about the date of its arrival:
"I would give a very realistic probability that it happens in the current fiscal year...but that's a guess. I mean that's a guess but you know, we will find out as we said, September is the month of reveals, the anniversary of the platform itself, so hopefully, we have some news about Nintendo Switch Online this month, but there is no rule that it has to come this month."
The main focus here though is that Nintendo 64 is apparently one of the platforms coming to the NSO. If this was to happen, what classics from this era would you like to see return? Would you pay more for these games? Tell us down below.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention about that reddit thread that N64 titles are coming to NSO, oh yeah also Atari games, and WonderSwan
OMG Like hell I'm paying more, It still runs like crap.
N64 before GBA?
Sadly a lot of the N64 titles are tied up in publisher, ownership rights so it will only be Nintendo's own titles.
I wouldn't expect GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Banjo or Conker to be amongst them.
Still, better than nothing.
I'm good though as I own everything that was released on the system anyway.
Still taking this with about 5 buckets of salt though.
I still have my N64, and an ED64 cartridge. Whether or not I feel inclined to play these same games on Switch depends on what Nintendo's emulation brings to the table. If it's still allows you to play online with other people, then I expect the second and third Mario Party to be on there. Nintendo has kept ignoring Mario Party 3 when it came to virtual console releases, so I would really like to see it come to NSO.
Ok I’m so happy about this news!! Ecstatic!!
So sick of the insiders and their stinky leaks…
Gameboy as of now is stil MIA on NSO
Honestly, the N64 may be on of my least favorite Nintendo consoles. Mario 64 (Which is on 3D all stars) and the 2 Zelda games are some of the only N64 games I would still want to play, and I have played them to death. There is one game I would want from N64 though, and that is Mischief Makers.
Just like the GB rumor, I absolutely don't believe this.
@DomGC indeed. I’m not listening to Nate anymore.
‘N64 is coming’ ‘not knowing a date though, lol’
Could be in three or four years and Nate would say ‘told you’.
Still waiting on his new Silent Hill game prediction. Been two or three years now.
I would love to play Super Smash Bros., Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, F Zero X, San Francisco Rush, the WWF games…man, so many great memories with that system.
Oh sure yeah right LOL! Last week GameCube games were rumored then gameboy and now N64. Heck they are even gonna put Wii games on there. Sha and monkeys might fly outta my butt!
I hear Nintendo is coming out with a switch pro too! It comes straight from the most highly regarded rumor mills!
Oh Nintendolife the articles you post on slow news days. Maybe don't even acknowledge rumors until they are confirmed. Ever consider that?
You guys should change your site to a Nintendo rumor site. You could call it NintendoBSrumors.com or NintenDon'tyouwishitwastrue.com
Nintendo is working on their next console to follow the success of the Switch. I would give a very realistic probably that it's released in the current decade.
This is a pretty obvious guess. But it is funny how some folk seem to get off on announcing Nintendo stuff before Nintendo does lol.
Are GameCom games next?
Here we go again. Game Boy NSO, Nvidia game lists, N64 NSO... you know it when NL becomes really fidgety in mid-September with no announced Direct in sight.😅
Was the N64 revolutionary though? Its software certainly was but Mario 64 or Ocarina could have comes out on the PlayStation and still had just as much impact. Sega had an analog pad for nights well before the N64 came out.
NSO is cheap enough (and I got two years free early on with various deals) that I don't mind it even without new stuff. TBH just being able to access the infinite super mario maker 2 levels makes it worth it to me. Plus I used online in ACNH a lot last year.
I'm not holding my breath for N64 but since I would be willing to spend money on Zelda ports I'd also be willing to spend slightly more for the service if it got those same games.
If there's any truth to this rumor I would gladly welcome the addition of Nintendo 64 to the Nintendo Switch Online. However I would much rather have the Game Boy Advance. Especially since Nintendo dropped the ball HUGE on not including the GBA library on the 3DS E-Shop.
I have a tip from industry insiders that video games are coming to Nintendo Switch within the lifespan of the system. You heard it here first.
No way, im gonna pay more.
If they increase the price it will be the last time i pay for nintendos online service wich still runs like crap.
Paying for NSO is bad because Nintendo's online isn't good, and no retro games has changed this reality.
But the irony from that is that N64 games (and hopefully not just N64 games) with online with friends for 10 more dollars a year would be tempting, with enough of the quality multiplayer games of the day. NSO is a bad online service, but has potential as a great retro gaming service. But I have my doubts anything will happen soon, because on its own, there's so little N64 games Nintendo has ever gotten on VC in the past beyond their own. If it was rumored with another system, I'd be more inclined to think this will happen. The new Mario Party Superstars with the retro N64 boards and the first ever Mario Party with full online features at launch also REALLY makes me doubt N64 is happening soon.
We would only get the usual 20 odd suspects anyway id imagine. Wasnt many on WiiU either. The Majority of the truly great 64 games are tied to Rare or locked behind other ownership/dev rights. Think theres more xhance of N announcing a new F-zero than getting any of Rares games on switch 😂
What we need is a N64 Classic Mini. I want to play as close to the original console model, controllers and experience.
As well as to be able to put any Rare games what will be obviously absent from NSO
I think the hard pill to swallow is that retro gaming is something that appeals to a relatively small user base when compared with Nintendo's overall customers. I believe this is why they abandoned the Virtual Console model and moved to a subscription-based service. This is also reflected in the low-frequency and mid-tier-quality of games coming out on NSO.
That's fair enough tbh considering we had to pay per game previously, but only so long as they put all the big hitters on it and update it regularly. Still so many 1st party NES and SNES games missing.
Tbh I'd only really grab this if Paper Mario is put on the platform
@The-Chosen-one Doesn't run like crap for me, Mario Maker aside. Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Tetris 99, Bomberman, Warface, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Overcooked 2 and other games run perfectly for me. Maybe it's your Internet?
I’d gladly hop onto a sub priced around Live or PSPlus if it included NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA/DS/GC titles…. Especially for some GBA and DS titles that are locked onto their systems like the Castlevania GBA/DS titles…. Or Phantasy Star Zero (DS) or PSO 1&2 on GC…. Or Eternal Darkness…. *drools uncontrollably
@The-Chosen-one BTW I read it as they'd have different price models if you want access to N64 rather than increasing the price. Maybe they'll have different bundles with GaneBoy etc too.
Ogre Battle 64 please.
Lmao, N64 games aren’t worth a premium to me.
@nhSnork The difference is Nvidia confirmed that their leak was legit. This and the GameBoy one were just people making up easy predictions. September is the anniversary for NSO; if they'll add any new systems, it'll be this month. pretty easy to just say "my sources say that Nintendo will add the next system in their lineup to NSO" and hope for some easy credibility boosts.
Why does this site report on rumors so much? Rubbish, honestly.
This is the kind of thing Nintendo needs to do with Virtual Console, make it into a Gamepass like service. Also don't discount the Microsoft/Nintendo love fest. Banjo could be coming to Switch via N64 games.
Asking us to pay more while they still havn't put out things people have been asking for for YEARS (Earthbound, Mario RPG...), things which were already released on Virtual Console... what a joke. Yeah, sure, I'd love to pay more to only have access to 80% of the first party library. Plus the problem you will always have with the N64 is that half of it's best games were made by Rare...
Sort out what you have rather than failing in other areas.
Most of the games I would want would be Rareware titles....
Honestly, considering how utter trash the online service is at this point, charging more for the inevitable slow drip feed of N64 and GameBoy titles would be an even bigger spit in the face to Nintendo fans (we all know exactly which games they'll feed to fans, lol). They have proven over the last 3 years with their NES/SNES offerings that they don't care about the service and simply use it as a carrot on a stick to try and entice fans of their old stuff to buy into what is a literal online paywall to a horrid online service. I refuse to pay for it as it is awful (I've never bought it but tried it on my friends system). The sad thing is the whole "well, it's so cheap so you might as well" mentality from Switch users is exactly why they won't change it, they have no reason to as it is literal free money to them.
N64 games shouldn't be worth much more than SNES games. Nintendo would have a lot of nerve asking for more money when their online service is barebones as is.
Nate has to be the most overblown “insider” people like SpawnWave and NintendoLife keep propping up.
The guy literally never got any big “leak” right and the stuff that he did get right was such an obvious prediction that a baby could make it. The guy also speaks with an air of self-importance like he’s the most mysterious man in the universe, so obnoxious lol
Charging more at this point would be stupid. If they’d launched it all at same time. With different things at different price points yes. Many people are already wondering why they are paying. Especially people that don’t game online. They need to keep people interested
@Itachi2099 and he can't be bothered to spend $20 on a webcam.
I'm letting my Switch Online run out, I never use the NES/SNES games and mainly play single player games.
I bought it when it first came out and then got an extra 6 months because of Mario Maker, other than that it is just not worth the amount of money they are asking
If there's no Rare games, then there's no interest from me and I'll not be updating my subscription.
Hopefully the long wait for some new content after they added SNES is, in part, due to the Rare issue with N64 and they've successfully dealt with it now.
Let's be clear.... it will only come down to money (Goldeneye perhaps the only exception where money alone may not resolve it). If Nintendo intend to charge more for N64, they can spend more getting the games we actually want to play.
No Rare. No deal.
I’d bite if all the Rareware games are included.
It’d also be nice if NLife would stop jumping at every “rumour” this guy claims.
Going back to N64 games is like bumping into the girl who used to be fit at school….neither has aged well and you end up feeling disappointed. Had an N64 on release back in the day, great console and games for its time but I have no desire to go back……stick with the memories.
Might dip back in for Space Station Silicon Valley 👌
I was like ***** yeah first but then I thought, what do I exactly wanna play from N64?
...WWF No Mercy.
🗡If there's NO 'Xena: Warrior Princess-Talisman Of Fate then I AIN'T INTERESTED!
On a serious note, this part of the Service would NEED 'GoldenEye' AND 'The World Is NOT Enough'.
Do it. Also, re-release the controller, so I can wreck the stick trying to master 1080 again.
WINBACK. The original RE4. Gimme.
What I get from this is that the whole thing is highly speculative... it's just one person's opinion. Even if part of it is true, they shouldn't try to conjecture. It discredited what truth there is in their statement.
Incidentally I've never played DK64 so I wouldn't mind having a go on that one.
something id like, but not get my hopes up for until i see it myself
I'm shocked by the amount of negativity in the comments. I understand being disappointed in how games perform online, and Nintendo should definitely fix their lag and frequent disconnects; if that's all you care about, nothing will change your mind. But charging less than $40/year to play Nintendo's vast library of NES, SNES, N64, and possibly GB and GBC games is objectively a steal. On Wii U Virtual Console, you couldn't get four N64 games for that price.
I'd happily pay more for Gamecube and Wii games, but not for N64 ones. I'm not interested in that catalogue, honestly, unless the games are remade (like the 3DS Zeldas). They've aged too bad.
For now, I want GBA games!
Can't see Nintendo bringing that many N64 games over to Switch anyway so it might not be worth it for a lot of people. Not that I believe the N64 is coming to Switch VC.
I really hope they don't increase the price like that. If they don't include proper server support with that then people aren't going to be happy with just N64 games for that price increase. I'm sure a lot of people will just not extend their subscription at that point.
Do I really need N64 games?
(Thinks about firing the little man into the mountain in Pilotwings 64).
YES!
@samuelvictor The top games haven’t aged badly at all. I still play Perfect Dark on my Xbox and it’s a tight FPS.
But there is a lot of aged software in the library that just doesn’t play as well in the modern day compared to GBA and SNES releases. 2D games obviously age better than their 3D counterparts.
But then I find that the PS1 hasn’t aged much either. FFVII-IX, MGS, Castlevania, Alundra, Soul Reaver, WipEout 1-3, Rollcage 2 etc all play as well as they ever did.
Oh great, oh wait....
1.- Rumour...
(Oh well, here we go again...)
2.- I remember this at least 1 year ago, ok.........
two weeks ago Nate said there was going to be a direct this week or next. I guess I’ll wait to the spawncast to hear the “plans changed” excuse. (Really big prediction Nate considering Nintendo annually has a sept direct)
No way I'm paying more for this. I hope they keep the simple pricing model they have right now. This is the reason I hate PS Plus and Xbox Gold. They make it seem like you are getting free games for the online service when in fact it's just a calculated value for them to break even (at minimum) on selling these "free" games in a subscription bundle.
Anyone remember Body Harvest (I think that’s the name)? Think that was one of the few N64 titles I did not complete. Would love to try again.
Never played Blast Corps either.
I don’t think Nintendo are going to charge more but if they did, I’ll be happy to pay extra for a good line up of other retro console libraries.
TETRISPHERE!!!
Still have this great system plugged to the tv. Great if true and more people have the chance to try its library.

This has honestly reminded me to cancel. I haven't used any Switch online services in months and to have the cheek to charge more for something that probably should've been there for a while is the last nail in the coffin for me. Until Arceus Legends comes, there's so little to interest me currently
I’ll believe it when I see it. I’d pay a bit more for that, NSO is pretty cheap
“In the future”
I mean, I’m pretty sure Nintendo will release lots of different things at some point in the future. Get this - even a new console! I came up with this without being an insider, I must be psychic.
Considering most people had their annual memberships renewed this month, it's unlike;ly they'll introduce a more expensive tier now. I paid my annual £4 for NSO for the next year already.
Sorry but don't think that gameboy or n64 games are enough to ask for more money. Add gba, GameCube and Nintendo ds before asking for more money
@twadebarcelona Yea, I thought that too. Of course they can always request a seperate payment be made to "top up" existing subscription to the new subscription, but that's a pretty stupid approach as you will always (statistics and law of averages) see a lower uptake on two purchases versus a single transaction.
Makes me believe we'll see a new console added within the existing subscription model - maybe it is GameBoy - this year, and then N64 would come next year - probably announced next Summer.
I mean, it makes sense right? Why would they release multiple new consoles at the same time? Spread it out like they did with NES and SNES.
Nintendo can do one.
The prospect of a tiered subscription system has never made sense to me, especially when the "online" element of this upgrade to the online package will be negligible. If you absolutely have to get extra money for ropey old N64 games, why not just release an N64 collection as a separate app? You get the games for the admission price, they have online multiplayer if you're an NSO subscriber. Why make this more confusing than it has to be?
Edit: Have to say, I can't really imagine that NSO's roll-up of old software has been what Nintendo wants. It was a way to get people used to the idea of paying online fees—they must know they could make loads of money on top if they sold the games separately. I honestly believe Virtual Console will return. Maybe not on Switch, maybe not under the same name, but definitely on its successor.
I wont pay more for N64 titles. Give me GC. Gamepass on Xbox is a better deal.
I'd pay $5/£5 more for GameCube games, but not for N64 games. I'd maybe even pay it for GBA games, but not N64 games.
By the time Nintendo includes GameCube games, it's going to be a mortgage.
Nintendo will pull that crap they did with the 3ds and claim “their hardware isn’t sufficient to run N64 titles” and release a “New Nintendo Switch” in a bid to sell more consoles.
As it's the N64, I would consider paying extra as the games are still excellent, but only if Nintendo provide a list of the games coming and how long it's going to take them to release them all. I'm not going to pay more if all we get is Mario 64 and Pilotwings for 3 months, but let's face it, that is how they've done things so far.
Given that Nintendo get money for nothing from me every month for their NES and SNES service while we wait for the massive gaps in the library to be filled (and I'm not talking about the impossible licensed stuff, just simple things like Axelay and Actraiser), I would expect them to prove they're going to get a decent number of games out in a short period of time to justify any increase in price.
Read headline as person publishes something off their wishlist as a rumour on the internet.
I don't see N64 ever coming really, the well of titles that console has that people actually want is very shallow, and even worse when a lot of the best titles are off the table like any Rare games, or expensive licenses like Rouge Squadron that Nintendo is for sure not going to pay for. It's most likely the reason we never got a N64 Classic.
GB/C and GBA have way more potential to bring in subscriptions, in terms of selection there are well over two thousand more titles to choose from with far more titles that fall in the top tier list range. They've also age far better than N64 titles, or that 3D generation in general, especially in the gameplay department.
I'm still not convinced Nintendo will ever add N64 games to NSO when they can sell remastered versions of those games at a very profitable premium price.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars sold over 9 million copies in under 10 months. Zelda 3D All-Stars could easily sell similar if not higher numbers, while remasters of other classics (Mario Kart, Smash Bros, StarFox, Wave Race, Donkey Kong 64, etc) could sell a few million copies each as well.
I don't see them charging extra money for the service, even if they add new consoles.
Seriously, NSO will always be lacking, due to the simple fact that too many key developers like SquareEnix and Konami don't support it, which is understandable as they want to sell their remasters of old games.
A lot of N64 games wouldn't come to NSO unless a deal can be reached. The most likely to appear would be Rare, and that's because Nintendo and Microsoft are on good terms and there are some Microsoft exclusives on Switch
However, many others probably won't appear due to licencing issues.
They’d probably release 5 games at first, then one n64 game every 6 months.
They’d really have to make it worth it for me to pay more.
I would prefer an n64 classic mini
@RadioHedgeFund It was Nintendo's first console with true 3D Graphics (The few FX-chip games on SNES don't make it a 3D console IMO), so that was sort-of revolutionary, but IMO most games from that era aged pretty poorly, more so than NES/SNES, so i don't know how many people are going to go "Oh boy! N64 games! Gotta get me a Switch Online subscription!"
I dislike this paywalling of legacy content with a subscription and online check-in, tremendously. I already own most of what I would want from N64 and GBA, GBC twice over on the same account I use right now via 3ds and Wii U. Screw this crap.
At least the Game Boy rumours and leaks actually looked real. There's no way they'll introduce a higher price for NSO if the only benefit would be N64 games.
They should have a free tier, with just NES.
Getting a bit tired of all these "leaks" creating false hope. Weren't we supposed to be having a Direct today or tomorrow.....? Yeah.
Before 3d Mario all stars stopped being sold Nate predicted a 3d Zelda all stars. Btw that prediction never materialized…. Plans changed. In the same few podcasts he was adamant that Mario 64 would not be available on NSO because then they couldn’t bundle games in the future under limited edition releases… I guess plans changed… Nintendos plans change more than a politician after being elected.
Lol nope. I'll stick to emulation thanks. Either sell the games separately, or I'm not buying.
Yay more unfounded rumors!
Regardless of what they may or may not add, I'll never renew my online subscription, it offers next to nothing and the games that I've played that do require it, run like crap, whereas Fortnite runs fine. Maybe in 20 years Nintendo will accept the whole internet fad they've hated since day 1 and try embracing it, but it won't be anytime soon.
@Itachi2099 Agreed, people need to call out the natethebait guy a lot more.
I’d be fine with that as compared to WiiU the selection is terrible. Miss my Virtual console !
I pay 16 bucks a month for ultimate gameplay and get over 100 of best current gen games I’d gladly pay 10 or 15 a month for switch to get a better service as 6 a month is like Denny’s g myself two red bulls
These "insiders" can f-k off with their baseless speculations. "I guess", "I think", etc... Pffft, BS! 😠
The rumors have all turned out to be true, so this one has to be accurate as well.
Unless they do something to kinda update these games slightly then I don't think paying extra would be worth it personally. Most of these early 3D games just hold up really badly, at least in terms of the overall visuals and framerate. And I mean such that even 16-bit games tend to look just much more appealing today and actually run much better in most cases too.
Raising the price for adding 5 games would be a bold move even for Nintendo.
I know it's just predictions but don't give Nintendo anymore idea especially the price bump thing.
Wouldn't an N64 mini/classic make more sense? I'd buy that for $120 with 25 games packed in.
...and there it is. The goal of all the "insider" grifters.
To be legitimised via articles from big name sites like Nintendo Life, helping them to gain even more undeserved fame and notoriety.
No-one can ever know they're being 'conned' either by these opportunists because they have plausible deniability. They can't name sources, or plans changed internally, or Nintendo are going in a different direction. It's all so convenient.
Take a bow Nate the Fake, lots more 'believers' will be rushing to your speculative podcast shortly thanks to this promotion.
I’ve said for a long time I’d be happy to pay an increased subscription cost for a much bigger chunk of retro content, even as a higher Tier, but Nintendo are really moving slowly with this.
How about an NSO package for N64? I never wanted NES, SNES.
@samuelvictor Well put. Thank you. I loved the 64 as well.
N64 doesn't really have many games I care much about that I'd pay a penny more to get access to. Mario 64 and Ocarina are really the main two, and the former has a proper Switch version, and the latter has a far superior 3DS remake (lost in time?). Same for Starfox 64. Banjo is all on Xbox, and better there, now. DK64, lol?
Most of the rest aged so badly. I'd have fun if it were free, but I'm not paying premium for the luxury of playing anything N64 at this point. GBA, maybe, that had a LOT of content. But it depends what they'd actually release.
Removed - inappropriate language
I will gladly pay more for N64 games, that is no issue with me, so I hope this is true.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I don’t mind rumors being posted on this site but I feel like they shouldn’t be thrown into the normal news feed. I know they have the rumor flair but I still feel like there should be a rumors and speculation section of the site separate from the main feed.
Just my opinion, of course.
Unless Rare games will be on there I've no interest.
Ah yes! That totally reliable guy who pushed so hard that the Pro was a definite and when the OLED showed he was like "Well that's not what I was shown by my 'sources'"
Sure someone's already said what I am about to but, I personally think Nintendo should just remove online multiplayer games being gatelocked behind a paywall. Make that free again.
But just have essentially Nintendo Classics Game Pass: GB, GBC, GBA. N64 maybe even GC games all in one place and you pay for that subscription.
Even if that bumped up in price a bit, i'd bite.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
No my internet is good, i play high end online pc games on it (highest settings) even did benshmark. Also games like battlefield etc all games play good without problems.
But when i play online on switch.... Smashbros, mario kart etc.
I would expect more for a paid service.
If free online was like this i would not complain.
I even contacted nintendo service, and they even admit that nintendo is working on it.
@Snatcher
It’s not ideal. But a USB to LAN converter makes it work WAY better, I haven’t had a crash since using it.
Obviously if you prefer handheld then this is a worthless suggestion unfortunately.
I would be fine if Nintendo raises the price of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. currently it is only about $35.00 per year for the family (up to 8 people) subscription and $20.00 a month for an individual subscription.
its a better deal than the xbox game pass considering that it is about $15.00 a month. xbox may have more games, but the Nintendo switch is cheaper and has more games of interest; at least for me. besides, it might give me a reason to start using the service again.
besides, i already know which games i would like to see.
1)Super Mario 64
2)Super Smash Brothers
3)Mario Kart 64
4, 5, & 6)Mario Party, Mario Party 2 &, Mario Party 3
7)possibly a few Legend of Zelda games
8 & 9)Banjo-Kazooie & Banjo-Tooie (assuming Microsoft will allow it. at least then we may see a return of the stop N Swop feature)
unreasonable "no way in hell" expectations: Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie 1+2, Mario 64, Turok 1&2, Shadows of the Empire, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Smash Bros 64, Mischef Makers, Superman 64, Quake, Doom 64, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero X Expansion, Mega Man 64, Gex 1&2, Rayman 2, Harvest Moon 64, Indiana Jones & The Infernal Machine, Mairio Party 1, NFL Blitz, Rampage 1-2, Tony Hawk,
Reasonable expectations (that we probably still won't get) Bomberman 64 1&2, Castlevania 64 & Legacy of Darkness, Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask, Ogre Battle 64, Mario Kart 64, Blast Corps, Dr Mario 64, Excite Bike 64, Pilotwings 64, F-Zero X, Forsaken 64, Goemon, Pokemon Snap & Stadium, Kirby 64, Mario Party 2-3, Mario Tennis & Golf, Paper Mario, Sin & Punishment, Star Fox 64,
What We Probably will get: Quest 64, Clayfighter 63 1/3, Cruisin USA, Earthworm Jim 64, Mortal Kombat Sub-Zero, Virtual Chess 64, Yoshi's Story
@RadioHedgeFund The N64 was revolutionary for its time in a range of ways that are easy to forget if you didn't experience it. First of all, it was the first console (well aside from the garbage Atari 5200 controller) to have a true 360-degree analog joystick. Sony would follow suit years later, but the PS1 controller at the time only had an analog d-pad.
The N64's graphics are a bit blurred by today's standards but back then on a tube television, the N64's anti-aliased graphics were smooth and sharp looking for their time.
The next aspect of the N64 were its load times. Where Playstation had a huge advantage in overall storage, the N64 ran on cartridges with next to no load times. This was really helpful in the overall immersion of games as you rarely would see load screens.
The N64 also instituted rumble with the Rumble Pak, for the first time at home you could feel the controller shake.
The last aspect I'll mention was four-player split-screen gaming. The N64 was the first to have four-player ports built into every console. You could add a peripheral to the Playstation to do this, but because it wasn't integrated it didn't trickle down to many games. Nintendo of the big three is still the only one to focus much attention on split-screen local multiplayer, and that began on the N64. Being able to play Mario Kart, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Mario Party, Diddy Kong Racing, Smash, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, F-Zero X, Turok, etc, etc in split-screen was amazing.

It would be great to have N64 games added as an app like NES and SNES. My main thing is I'm not interested in N64 frame rates. I played many N64 games back then, but now I want them to run smoothly at 60fps. I don't care about any of the other graphical shortcomings, well, ok, I'd like the resolution boosted too! Ok, resolution and frame rate, and that's all I need! Would be so awesome to be able to play SF Rush, Rush 2, Wipeout 64, Goldeneye, Paper Mario, Majora's Mask, F-zero X, Mario Golf 64, Mario Kart 64(would love to play at 60fps!), Pilotwings 64, Tetrisphere (so many awesome songs, and good gameplay too), The New Tetris, the Mickymouse Tetris game, 1080 Snowboarding, Waverace 64 (please make this 60fps!), etc on Switch!
@Arckadius Mischief Makers! Shout outs to my favorite N64 game.
I do like the N64 though, and it had lots of great games.
Xtreme G
F-Zero X
Starfox 64
Yoshi's story
Kirby 64
Paper Mario
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Stadium (plus transfer pack)
Pokemon Puzzle League
Jet Force Gemini
Clay fighter 63 1/3
OOT and Majora's mask
Mario 64
Tetrisphere
DK 64
Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie
Diddy Kong Racing
MegaMan 64 (even if it was an inferior port)
Earthworm Jim 3d
Mario parties
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Smash Bros
Ogre Battle 64
Perfect Dark
Goldeneye
@RadioHedgeFund Revolutionary consoles... pretty sure it starts with the NES?
So I love the N64. Just adore it. It had some of the greatest games Nintendo ever made. But once you take out all the games from Rare that will probably never happen, all the Zelda Games, which have been recently rereleased and are perpetually rumored to be rereleased again, Mario 64, which just got a rerelease, and the Mario Party games, which just got made into a best-of series, there's not a whole lot left. Not that I would balk if we got a service that "Just" had Donkey Kong 64, Yoshi's Story, Kirby 64, Star Fox 64, Paper Mario, and MAYBE Smash Bros, but most of the offerings beyond that would mostly have to be those seldom-thought-of, also-ran titles that everyone hates on the existing Switch Online consoles.
@RadioHedgeFund You sound like you didn't experience the N64 first hand, which is fine, so our perspectives are going to be different. For the era, the N64 and Playstation were equally groundbreaking.
While I love the Dreamcast as it started the era of "128-bit" and had several great games for it's criminally short run, to me the N64 was the revolutionary console. I remember grabbing the Dreamcast at release and loving Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, House of the Dead 2, 2BA 2K, NFL 2K, and others at release or shortly after. Compared to anything before it the definition was better, and games ran at higher frame rates, though it still had pesky load times coming from the N64.
@Itachi2099 I agree, not only does he ever fail to provide any sort of evidence for his claims, if you question him on it he is just super arrogant in his response. I have zero reason to believe he actually has any inside knowledge on any of this (and hey, a broke clock is right twice a day.) I would prefer Nintendo Life stick to credible sources they can back up rather than those who hide behind anonymity and pretentiousness.
Why does Nate always confirm other rumours. For instance. Other outlets said a switch pro was coming out. Suddenly nate talks to his sources and they agree. Why didn’t his sources tell him before and he actually lead the story. Sure seems convenient and more piggybacking than insider.
@HolyGeez03 The NES wasn’t the first console to market but it’s place in history is assured due to saving the industry. It wasn’t that revolutionary of an idea and the Master System was a better machine (I’ll fight that hill!)
The 16-bit generation was an iteration of 8-bit.
The PS1 was probably the most revolutionary console of all time.
The Dreamcast was the dawning of the modern era. It gave us proper online gaming, console MMO, motion controls, Arcade perfect home conversions, HD graphics, The VMU, cel shading and user generated content. It was also Sega firing all creative cylinders and there hasn’t been a console before or since that had such experimental software.
Microsoft took the baton from Sega and whilst the original Xbox wasn’t that much of a leap really from the Dreamcast in terms of features, the Xbox 360 was. That standardised everything about modern gaming.
@Nico07 I spent £75 on Majoras Mask at launch and £60 on Perfect Dark, the greatest FPS ever created. I know the N64.
But it’s complete lack of RPGs, decent racing titles and cheaper games made it not as good. Ocarina was the defining piece of software of the 1990’s but I would argue Final Fantasy VII had just as much impact.
This same "Insider" also said Xbox Game Pass was coming to Switch and backed up the Switch Pro Rumor a few months back. N64 and/or other consoles on a sub service will happen if Nintendo wants to add them. It seems these "insiders" just say things and hope to be right just to say if it comes true, "see I was right".
@RadioHedgeFund I never said NES was the first console... you said the list of revolutionary consoles starts with Dreamcast. I was alive when the NES hit the market, and I assure you it was revolutionary.
I agree that everything after was fairly iterative until the Saturn/PS1 & N64 era. And nothing since has been much more than a more powerful box, except for the gimmicky Wii and VR stuff, until the Switch (with WiiU being fairly revolutionary, but misunderstood and mis-marketed).
@BranSmith my sources said Nintendo is working on a new Mario game. I don’t know if it’s 2d or 3d but I think they will position it as a must own game.
We will see Gamecube games available on either Switch online or the next Nintendo system's online platform. Do I get credit for that prediction if it happens?
@jorel262 GameCube games? The goal here is to predict something super obvious and then take credit.
I still maintain that Nintendo should’ve had N64 and dare I say even GameCube games available on the switch from day one 🙄
be nice if Nintendo made a new game that's you know....good and not a wii u game. They are only Japan's biggest company, you'd think they could maybe make some products with some of that money (which happens to be the largest collection of money in Japan outside of the Japanese Government I assume)
I'm just glad pricing doesn't somehow automatically scale with the desire of the gamer/buyer. I'd be charged hundreds pf dollars a year for Gamecube being added as a Switch online app with a good selection of games.
@RadioHedgeFund The Nintendo 64 was revolutionary enough for Nintendo.
The controller in particular is very unique.
Ocarina of time would not have been running on PS1 and if it did it would look like absolute horror.
I don’t even know why you are talking about this? What does the PlayStation have to do with them perhaps releasing a N64 controller? I can tell you one thing, they definitely will not release a PS1 controller.
Absolute nonsense about N64 games potentially having a higher priced tier. There aren't even that many! Maybe if it were gamecube games too I could see that but no way just for N64. Particularly as Super Mario 64 is already available.
Nate was wrong about a Switch Pro being announced before E3 so can't believe what he says
@DaniPooo I would argue the GameCube was more revolutionary for Nintendo.
They got battered during the N64 era for making grandiose promises that turned out to be crap. It’s also worth remembering that the N64 controller was dumb. Sony’s DualShock became the industry standard for controller layouts.
But let’s look at the cube: Wireless controllers, handheld linkup, elimination of disk load times, faster memory cards, a more humble dev friendly Nintendo, better 3rd party relationships: these are all things Nintendo carried over to the Wii.
That dumb 3-pronged controller design is nowhere to be seen.
@RadioHedgeFund
But why compare the n64 to GameCube?
And why talk about which one was more revolutionary?
Why bring in Sony in the discussion?
The N64 was a huge deal when it came out, it was the first Nintendo console to be focusing on 3D primarily.
It was Nintendos step into that realm. (And no I don’t really count starfox and doom for snes). The controller was unique and actually revolutionary in many ways, it was the first console to have an analog stick as far as I am aware.
But non of this matters, they have released NES, SNES and next chronologically would be N64, talking about what was revolutionary or not I think is a bit off topic
I'm not paying more for n64 games, sorry
But but, I don't play retro games, I just want to play online... Why to mix the price for two completely different services?
Switch Online is a bad joke even at $19.99 per year. The biggest selling point, cloud saves, would not have even been supported by huge first-party titles like BotW and ACNH if countless gamers hadn't voiced their outrage. The trickle of NES and SNES games that are brought to the service whenever Nintendo gets around to the next batch of two or three is simply not worth the price of the subscription if considered by itself.
Nintendo's legacy games would be far better served by a resurrection of the Virtual Console, where games could be purchased individually and would be tied to user accounts as opposed to a single system. The bottom line here is that Nintendo needs to stop making things harder on their consumers than they need to be, and start giving them actual value for their investment with regard to retro titles.
This seems unlikely to me. Nintendo don't do enough to justify a 2-tier sub service and they know it, and a couple of n64 games doesn't justify any price rise...Not unless they going enhance them with say AI upscaling and revised framerates, but what are the odds of that? Pretty low.
More likely they will re-release classic n64 games individually with minimal enhancements ala Mario 64 in the Allstars package, at an unreasonable price.
No interest. I don't pay for NSO as it is now and N64 is one of my least favorite Nintendo platforms.
@KayFiOS I still have my real N64, and 75 carts.
Also i own 2 x NVIDIA Shield TV's which can emulate most consoles ever at full speed.
Then i have 2 powerful PC's that both can emulate ALL heavy 3D Arcade games ever including 3DFX at full speed.
Same PC's also emulates Switch, Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 etc. at full speed.
There is no way i need to buy a NSO Tier since it's not including GameCube.
This is the wrong approach if they plan to compete with Game Pass. It will fail as hard as PSnow did.
The upcoming Steam Deck Handheld can even emulate Switch full speed. lol
Dividing Switch Online into multiple tiers sounds like a dangerous path to go down.
I’m totally ready for an N64 nostalgia trip. Games I would like to see on the service:
Lylat Wars
Body Harvest
Space Station Silicon Valley
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Beetle Adventure Racing
F Zero X
And if Microsoft are feeling friendly:
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Banjo Kazooie
@Ventilator Whoa there buddy! Flex any harder and you might hurt yourself. I am well aware of what high-end PCs can do with emulation, but I was more talking about reasons to boot up my Switch over the N64 for whatever games are available on it. I don't use my PC enough to really care about what I can achieve through emulation on it, beyond playing rom hacks that are too complex to play on official hardware, and even then, I still need to order a new N64 controller adapter since my last one broke when I moved. Pretty cool that you have 75 carts though. I can't imagine having that many of those bulky cartridges on my shelf, space is already limited enough on it lol.
Uh huh. Yeah, sure you know all this bub.
@NEStalgia One of those things…so many people praise the N64 as amazing, for me it was unplugged and confined to a box once the Dreamcast came out. I don’t know what it was but nothing about it ever gelled with me. It might have been the over abundance of brown and fog in every game, the soft focus video output, the controller, who knows. It’s one of those rare occasions I’ve had buyer’s remorse. Not to say I didn’t have fun with it, but there wasn’t anything that really kept me hooked.
I guess I like the idea of tiers. I just want the internet so am happy to pay a dollar something a month, but based on all the complaints I usually see here, some people would be happy to pay more for some more random "free" games. So if they want to pay more I say let them, so long as I can still pay a dollar something a month for just the online.
Bring Goldeneye to it and I'll consider.
@Nin10dood You can play three of those four games/series on Xbox, since Rare is fully owned by Microsoft and only one of those (Goldeneye) is shackled and bound by licenses. Yeah, they're not on Switch, and aside from cameos in Smash Bros. they probably never will be--but it's been decades, I've moved on, Xbox is actually a good platform on its own, and at least these games are officially supported in some way on a modern console.
IF this ends up being true, I wonder if we will get the Goemon games. I mean the N64 has a relatively small library, and people seem to agree that the first Goemon game is a highlight on it, especially among games that were not made by Nintendo and aren't tied to an existing franchise. But it's kinda weird that no Goemon game was released in any region in either console pack. Come on Konami, release the Goemon collection you've been sitting on for years.
@WiltonRoots Yeah, N64 never did it for me. I was such a huge huge Nintendo fan at the time (What's a Playstation and why would anyone buy a console made by a VCR maker? Real games come from Nintendo and Sega. Still true.... )
Even got burned by Virtual Boy.
But N64, Mario64 was appealing, but I preferred 2D mario more, and nothing else about the system really appealed to me. Games were fugly.
It was a technological wonder, really, for its time it could do really impressive things. But the net result was so freaking fugly it make it impossible to appreciate what it did well even in its own time, and after it's own time the whole thing looks like a proof-of-concept prototype of what the future could hold rather than anything I'd actually want to go back and experience, let alone pay a premium to do it.
I do imagine, though, that if it had been my first console, and I'd not been accustomed to 8 and 16 bit systems, as well as being an arcade rat what was used to what actually pretty games looked like, I could have been wowed by it. Maybe if I was a bit younger at the time it would have been magical.
That controller can die in a hole, though.
@ryu_san two weeks ago he said it was that week or this week we would see a direct. Bold prediction. Crickets.
18 days in and still nothing to show for the previous rumor. Not believing another single word this person says at this point.

I want Mischief Makers and Tetrisphere. Those are N64 games that hold up to this very day, and they were never re-released, ported, or remastered. They never got sequels, or even clones, and the gameplay is just amazing, so yeah, for me these two gems are N64 essentials.
Also, any good N64 service has to have GoldenEye on it (or at the very least Perfect Dark) as it was just as defining as Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, and Super Smash Bros.
It would be very cool to have Conker's Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2, for them being the most advanced titles on the system showcasing what the machine was capable of.
And since I grew up with the hype of the "Ultra 64", Killer Instinct Gold and Cruis'n USA are just too iconic to leave behind. They were literally the first glimpse of what the next Nintendo console (after the SNES) would be like, long before we saw the beta of Super Mario 64.
Finally, but not on top of my list: Pokémon. Specifically Pokémon Stadium 1&2. The N64 was the first home console with Pokémon on it. I think they deserve a place here with all Transfer Pak features included. Yes, I like Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League but Stadium 1&2 are the main stars here!
I'll never be interested in the onine service because I want to download and own the games. Why don't they just release the best N64 games on Switch to buy and download? They did it with Turok, Turok 2 and Super Mario 64, and that went well.
I won't pay for NSO, with or without old game roms. The service holds no value to me. There are better ways to play these games.
Yes please,
I want to play 007 Goldeneye on switch please,
Please do it 🙏
@KayFiOS I went back to PC gaming when Game Pass Ultimate came, because 100% of new Xbox games cape to PC too, and most Sony third party exclusives which in reality isn't exclusives as they are released on same day on PC.
Sony started to port 1st party games to PC too.
The only console needed outside PC is Nintendo consoles.
Space is not a problem in my house as it's 3 floors high.
I have a dedicated room with shelves for Wii U, PS3, 360, Wii and older systems.
In total i have stored all systems in 3 rooms on shelves. A 4rth room is for DVD and other movie formats. lol
5th Room is Home Cinema, and is for Xbox, Switch, PS4 and Blu-Ray/4K UHD disc only.
NSO N64 controllers would be cool. I’d buy those for sure. Maybe even just for the parts so I could keep my actual N64 controllers functioning.
N64 Classic Mini!
I would pay more of my subscription if Nintendo add N64 games and Game Boy/Game Boy Color games come to the switch online service. Then I would play them online with friends and family.
Yeah, it's not a rumour if there charging more money 👎👎
@NEStalgia I think for me going from the vibrance and sharpness of games on a Sega console (and they knew how to do vibrance) to vaseline lens brown games felt like a step backwards. To be honest I was a proper Sega fan so that didn’t help. But as you said I only wanted to back the real games makers, not the corporate suits who jumped in and changed the face of gaming and turned it into the mess it is now. I saw Sony and Microsoft as beg friends with big wallets.
@WiltonRoots I don't think of N64 as the "brown" console so much as just the "ugly" console. It may not have been Sega vibrance, but it had more color than the PS2/3/X360 eras, but the blurry smeary low res textures were insufferable.
In hindsight if I'd known that Sonys console was actually born as a Nintendo joint-project by an in-house Nintendo fanboy on staff I'd have probably payed a lot more attention to PS1 when it came out. Having known none of that at the time, it was "another VR maker's fake console with fake games" like the CDi, Odyssey.
Microsoft actually interested me more when it first arrived, because at the time I had converted entirely to PC gaming, and I saw what they were doing, trying to bring PC games (and PC game studios) into the console space since Sony was eroding the PC gaming market heavily with PS2. I didn't get an OG XB, but the idea intrigued me, and I liked where it wanted to go. That vision was kind of derailed early on, but I feel like with Series they actually finally arrived at the overall goal I thought they were aiming for back in 2000. I thought they'd drag Sony with them, but Sony seems bent on imitating Nintendo's worst policies without any of the ingenuity.
MS, I get where they are, the idea is bringing console and PC games into a more unified experience. And that's cool. And that includes some of the consumer-friendly aspects of PC gaming (up to a point.)
Nintendo is clearly all about the novel ideas, though I feel like they've gone soft (again) with the success of Switch and are back to milking tried & true with minimal spend. It's been over 2 years since they've really wowed me with anything (MS has been wowing more on that front lately.) We'll see how the coming games go, but it feels almost Sony-like with safe sequels and milking franchises dry. I miss Iwata, Furukawa and the business-focused leadership reminds me of late-era Yamauchi.
Sony....they've been so random. PS1, as I later found out was born from the super Nintendo fanboy on staff, Kutaragi, so it had tons of charm, in hindsight, with lots of experiments. Not the "VCR" company I thought. But, over the past generation they've transitioned to viewing their games division like their film studio, running it the same, and it's the worst perversion of gaming I've ever seen. Nothing is more bland than hollywood, and turning games into hollywood is miserable. I find less and less from their own studios interests me really. Unfortunately, Persona is locked to their systems, and Falcom games run like trash on Switch so, I'm still in their world
Now we're talking about right!
I'd only pay more if they offer anything closer to the other subscription services, like more free games avaliable monthly.
Hahahahahaha!!!! NO!
I only pay, begrudgingly, for cloud saves anyway. Everything else about Switch Online is useless, dated, and in no way an acceptable replacement for the Virtual Console.
Hard Pass if true!
@Snatcher
Yep.
They need to vastly improve the service for a price increase. While their at it, they need to vastly improve the one store experience. Because navigating the eShop on Switch is an exercise in frustration.
It's incredibly slow, lacks tons of modern day features most of its competitors offer, and just not a good value.
