I’ve been ignoring switch “pro” rumors for years so I’m not feeling any disappointment over this model revision. As it stands I have no plan to get this since I primarily play on TV. If my switch dies before Nintendo’s next console, I might get this one. It’d be hard to justify over just buying a preowned basic switch though. Even if they came out with a fancy skinned version it wouldn’t make a difference, since my dock sits behind my TV.
It’s nice for people who want it, I bet the screen and speakers are really nice but I’m relieved I don’t have to throw down 400-500 on a new Nintendo console this year.
I think collecting things just for monetary value is odd, buying a valuable thing just to have a valuable thing. Disclaimer: I’m broke.
I can get down with collecting things for complete sets though, or just hoarding the things you get along the way. I have several sets of Lord of the Rings books for example, and I have a strange fixation on coasters. I get new coasters whenever I travel, or go to a museum or sporting event.
@BloodNinja Years ago a friend of mine went around the world for a year and brought me back a sweet rupee bill to frame. It’s got Ghandi on one side and a rhino, a tiger, and an elephant on the other. Rupees rule.
I went into my backlog and started Halcyon6 Starfleet Commander - Lightspeed Edition, and I’m loving it.
It takes the timed base building/research mechanics from Xcom 2, with some time sensitive missions and quests too, along with resource gathering and colony protection, but does away with the game over timer of the main mission, so you can just go do everything for as long as you want.
Combat occurs in debuff-focused turn based RPG battles. There are three main job types but each soldier you create has different abilities in their specialty. It’s really damn good, and I’m looking forward to trying it on higher difficulty once I finish my normal run.
Can Joycons faithfully replicate Motion+ control? I actually liked the motion control in this game so if I were to play it again I’d probably do it that way (until I got tired of drift of course)
The trailer reminded me of Sauron blasting through Numenoreans and Elves in the prologue of Fellowship of the Ring, I look forward to 90-120 minutes of that.
Damn, that’s cool. I used to do an interstate commute via train and I’d sometimes sit all the way in the front carriage to watch the engineer through his door’s window and it really did just appear to be a few joysticks and levers.
@Kieroni Yeah this confuses me a bit too. While many stories for kids involve death it’s usually an impetus for the rest of the tale (The Land Before Time, Bambi) or the end result (Old Yeller, Bridge to Terabithia, The Outsiders). As a pervasive theme, there are probably examples but I’m not sure how well FFIX’s treatment of the subject would translate. It’s another one, like FFX, that has a cheery exterior and a somber body.
IX took a lot of time but grew on me. It ends up with a pretty moving story and themes, a cast of believable, lovable characters, some really sweet moments, and one of the best soundtracks ever.
The only reason I haven’t preordered yet is because GameStop almost always offers bonus trade credit (20%, so 30% total for members) toward big new releases closer to the date. Day one for sure though. I’ve been playing Metroid since #2 for the fat old gameboy and loved every minute.
Sweet merciful Satan please let it be real. I have every handheld Castlevania plus my original Symphony for ps1 and still I would gladly, gladly throw down $60 for a hard copy of all the GBAvanias on a single switch cart.
I’m an old, and even moreso an out of touch, so I don’t know exactly what cloud gaming is. That’s why I figured I’d see what the hubbub was about when Control came along (it was a demo or free trial at the time). Then I entered a queue. Then I deleted.
I recently bought the starter books and kits and am having enough fun just reading the rules and making characters. I have no idea what the actual play experience is like.
Hm. The top five is an odd mix. Silent Hill 2 night not be a fantastic gameplay experience but the feel of it and its draining emotional impact have stayed with me ever since I first played it. The Legend of Zelda, on the other hand, is strictly gameplay. Symphony of the Night is another one like the original Zelda that I can (and have) played repeatedly literally looping directly from the end credits to a new game for days. Final Fantasy X still moves me, despite having played it dozens of times, and I love the combat.
I’d have to leave the last space open. Five is too few. Hades is a national treasure and is definitely the most recent superstar 10/10 game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is fantastic. I’m replaying Mass Effect right now. I’ll always love Resident Evil 1-3. Final Fantasy 7. Yadda yadda
The pots are bad, the plants look like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree, and there’s nothing nearby in the pictures that matches any of it. It’s like they spent it all on the pots and had no cash to go around for the plants.
If we can trust the internet (ha) the town has a population right under 300,000 and a working aged pop of around 170,000. The project was 1.5m pound, or around 2.1m usd. Yeah, I’ve wasted a lot of money in my life, and I live in a state in the US where a multibillionaire was somehow allowed to subsidize construction of an NFL stadium, but man they could have done better with this. Granted, this sort of thing might be considered to be art or as an attraction to keep people around the area, spending money nearby, which is good, but oh my god just dump the cash into the school system or urgent care clinics next time, or just fix up the buildings and businesses in the square. Or at least get prettier plant, a row of dogwoods would have done the trick fine. Woof
I just recently had the itch and dumped another 60 hours into Slay the Spire, after putting 20 on Ring of Pain. So not right away, but maybe eventually.
I’m enjoying Legend of Keepers. The combat is engaging, with a variety of troop types, elemental and buff/debuff stacks, and even pre-set targeting needing consideration for success. The management is good enough for me. The pixel art is gorgeous, I just wish the characters and text were a little bigger. My eyesight sucks so I might not even try it on handheld.
The combat/leveling system sounds a lot like final fantasy 2, which, coincidentally, is one of m favorites. Maybe I’ll pick this up some time
@Beaucine I love parasite eve, highly recommend getting it on the ps3 eshop while you can. The combat is active time turn based, like FF7, but you also move around and dodge attacks in real time. I’ve been loading up before the shutdown and I’ll be playing Vagrant Story for the first time soon.
It would be nice to get 2D or A Link Between Worlds style Zelda games between huge tent pole Zeldas. We’ve kind of lost that with the lack of a dedicated handheld. Link’s Awakening remake was kind of along those lines but the price tag did not match the product. Get a decent team on it and let me have my small scale Zeldas. It worked for the Oracle games.
The only reason I didn’t double dip into physical Hades is because the soundtrack was digital. Same reason I won’t buy this. Just give me a cd for my stupid old car.
10 is my favorite. I love the combat system, the music, the characters (except Wakka), and blitzball. I still get the damn feelings when I play it.
I think X-2 is wonderful too. It gets a lot of flak for having a brighter appearance though I seem a lot of people immediately “nope” it because of the opening sequence, not knowing that Yuna is not actually a pop star, somebody is impersonating her. While I’m not sure if I’d say the story is dark, it is certainly sorrowful and somber and the main characters are generally trying to put on a brave face and not take on the burdens of the world. I also think X-2 retroactively adds a great deal of Yuna’s perspective from X. Her “I don’t like your plan.” speech at the very end of the game really sums the whole thing up nicely.
8 and 4 have regularly been up in my list. Love 7.
I think 12 is generally overlooked. I don’t know why. The combat takes some getting used to but the music is great, the script and VA are top of the line. The relationships between Basch and Gabranth, and Vayne and Larsa are strong and moving, but I have brothers, so that might just be me. I think the story is multilayered or better or worse. The primary struggle of Ashe vs the empire is dependent on the struggle of Venat vs the Occuria, and all this comes millennia after the Espers themselves failed to end the tyranny of the gods.

Re: Random: The Internet Reacts To The New Switch OLED Model
Nintendo still has one thing I don’t think anybody else does: Switch menus can be navigated with the right stick.
Keep your damn 4K hdr 120fps. Right stick menu navigation fuhlife.
