Love 'em or hate 'em, cloud games on the Nintendo Switch have become a thing. So far there have been releases like Control Ultimate Edition and Hitman 3, and very soon another game will join them.
It's the award-winning adventure title A Plague Tale: Innocence. In a new trailer, it's been confirmed the cloud version will be made available to Nintendo Switch players on 6th July.
This reveal follows on from the announcement earlier this week that A Plague Tale: Requiem would also be coming to the Nintendo Switch as a cloud game. The sequel will be made available at some point in 2022.
One other cloud game announcement for the Switch this week was Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - which is landing on 26th October this year. Would you be interested in playing a cloud version of the first Plague Tale game on Switch?

Well if it can’t run native then might as well go cloud.
I thought the 4K pro was coming out. Slowdive told me so. Nate told him. We don’t know who told Nate. But it has to be a reliable source. By the way like, subscribe, ring that bell and if you donate $100 we will dedicate the episode to you.
Interesting to see this flood of cloud games on Switch. How well are they "selling"? 🤔
I wonder if there will be people who can get this on other platforms (PS, Xbox) but will get it on switch. It isn't like witcher 3 with portabilty, you are locked to Wi-Fi + digital.
I wouldn't mind playing a streaming cloud game, but my brain will not let me pay to "buy" a game to stream. Streaming games should only be rentals, preferably in a subscription service, not game by game. Game by game, renting at any price, still seems like buying.
My issue with these cloud games are not that they are cloud version but because they cost like full games if you want to continue playing them before they non-exist. At least let me play them for free if I'm an NSO subscriber or create a higher tier subscription for those who want a sort of Switch cloud gaming service or something. Call it the Nintendo SatellaCloud, that would be a good name for such a cloud service. As long as we are required to pay full price for these, I will never embrace them. Anything in the cloud should work like Netflix, not like a product because these are not products they are a service.
Cloud games can die in a fire
I can see pros and cons for cloud games on switch. It's not for me personally because I like having the files locally for any game I own (even if my sd card is full I'll back it up to pc rather than outright deleting). And I absolutely hate the idea of having to queue for server time if I've bought a game (I believe Alex mentioned this in his video on Control).
Having said that, the Switch has a great form factor so it is nice to play all kinds of games on it, even if the game cannot run on it natively. I've been running Android on my switch and I've been playing pc games over Nvidia Moonlight. It's a great experience, even streaming from away from home. So I definitely see the appeal of these cloud games. (And I've read Valve might be putting out a SteamPal handheld that will essentially be the same thing).
But the pricing has to change. The games will not last. Servers will shutdown eventually. And the experience itself is limited (queueing, lag, performance spikes etc.). They need to be much cheaper or they need to give you some kind of permanent ownership (cross buy with pc or another platform maybe).
"There will be no downsides to cloud gaming! " and Other Lies You Can Tell Yourself, now available for purchase!*
*Your book may explode after 4-5 years, and will at that point, no longer be readable. (NO REFUNDS)
@sixrings Is it possible Nintendo is building stock up before release to avoid this nonsense with the PS5/XSX shortages? Maybe they think they can wait it out or at least have enough on hand to overwhelm the scalpers?
It's not really a great time to launch new hardware...
The best part is they're charging full price for these cloud games. The worst part is there are Switch owners who would buy these games. Many such cases.
I've played the cloud games on Switch and have enjoyed them. I'm a Switch only gamer and if cloud is the only way some of these games can play on the console, so be it. More games is better than fewer.
Please send both Nintendo & the Devs a message, by not buying.
I am begging you all to do your part.
Have them learn the hard way, they need to wait for Nintendo to get better Hardware.
You want "cloud gaming", ask Devs to target Tablets or Mobile Phones; not Nintendo.
Unless it is a game that requires online play, there should be no reason to buy into any "cloud gaming" on the Switch.
I am Begging You All, DO NOT BUY.
Also, please send Square Enix a message too;
by not buying the upcoming 8-bit game final fantasy 1-5 on mobile device. It belongs on the Switch.
Devs need to learn their priorities the hard way, time to show some tuff love.
the real switch pro is the friends we made along the way
@tadams587 Some boycotts are worthwhile. Some are not.
@tadams587 I doubt there's even much of an audience on the Switch for this kind of game to begin with for it to be even worth boycotting
These cloud versions are probably mostly targeted at people who flat out have no other platform than Switch because if they really cared about A Plague Tale the game's been available on other platforms for like two years and are probably eyeing a legit next gen console for the upgrade. I doubt there's really many people who are going to go out specifically to get this game on Switch. Same with Guardians of the Galaxy
They probably tried running it natively and realized that it wasn't that feasible or worth what they'd eventually make back from the port compared to other platforms as well
I’m an old, and even moreso an out of touch, so I don’t know exactly what cloud gaming is. That’s why I figured I’d see what the hubbub was about when Control came along (it was a demo or free trial at the time). Then I entered a queue. Then I deleted.
@sixrings 👌
I could care less about any cloud games. Subscription cloud games are fine with me. But I'm not spending full price on one.
@Just_2_milky agree. I actually got The Witcher 3 for Switch. It was a god send for my business trip in late 2019 and very early 2020 (then we all know what happened). I had it on Xbox One X, but never got around to play it until Switch. It helped a lot especially as my Houston hotels had surprisingly crappy Wi-Fi coverage. This would have made a cloud version unusable.
Owning a PS5 and a XSX, I wouldn’t consider a cloud version of any game available in those platforms to be honest, but I’m always interested in native versions for the portability factor, even double dipping in some cases.
This game is great! If this is the only way for someone to enjoy this game then it’s worth it
I will never spend a cent on these cloud games
Nice! Perhaps I can finish it now lol. As always hoping for a demo to test my internet with.
Super nintendo switch online. $50 a year, access to all "cloud" games.
@Just_2_milky if I can test it I will get it on switch instead of xbox. Personally I care more about my convenience and actually playing/beating games than amassing a collection and I just don’t put in the play time on my xbox (or ps4) to justify buying it there. I do the same with indies/gamepass games. Test on xbox and buy on Switch. I prefer to game how I want and not how a company wants. I also travel for work and it is way easier to toss my switch cases and dock into my carry on than lugging a big system around. So there are some of us out there.
My only real issue with the cloud games on Switch is that none of them appeal to me.
@Ryu_Niiyama Same for me. There are games I could have gotten in my ps4 instead but will never have much of a chance to play them. Outer worlds is a perfect example of that. I tried Control cloud a while back but was still on my old dsl line. Our ass telco provider upgraded our line to fiber recently and maybe I can get it to work this time round. Really interested in GOTG. Hope its the same as Control which you can test before buying.
I remember playing RE7-cloud in Japan and it was by no means a pleasure. Stuttering graphics and out of sync sound... also tried Hitman, which was not very good either. And then the fact that I have to pay full price for something I don't own... cloud, no thanks.
@path4smash yeah the ability to test is the key to success here. Many that live in larger cities have the internet needed to run these games and for those that don’t they have other options in the form of other systems (although as a country bumpkin I can say it is heck owning a sony/MS box with crap internet even if you are physical only...tried it...hated it). I just love to have options to game my way.
The Cloud gaming trend on Switch definitely isn't for me. I'll never understand paying full price to stream a game that you will never own. I'll pick up the PS5 version of this game if it gets a physical release.
“You will own nothing and you will be happy”
This timeline sure sucks
So if the Switch Pro is a real thing, why not just release it there? Why bother with a Cloud version that no one is going to care about?
One of the best story driven games I have played. More people will get to play it this way, even if it is a cloud version.
I'd be excited if these cloud games were available here
@Screen Actually they have a good usage on Game Pass.
Try the game from cloud before installing them.
Later this year, you can play 100% of Xbox games on XCloud before deciding to purchase them too if you have no GP.
For the price of 1 streaming game on Switch, you get 6 months of Game Pass sub...
See, I don't mind this. It wouldn't run on Switch anyway, so in these types of scenarios, the cloud is being used as a solution to a problem as opposed to a business model. Sure, the next generation of gamer aren't going to see the difference and it will probably become closer to being the norm...but until then...
I know it's naive, but I'm still hoping for a cloud version of Hogwarts Legacy...
@Ryu_Niiyama As a PS4 owner I can relate. I stopped buying physical games there since it is copied on the hdd anyway plus u need to get like a 30-60gb patch for the complete experience which takes a whole day on crap internet. Can't imagine what its gonna be like for next gen games. Gotta take advantage of our new internet line before the typhoon season arrives here and wrecks it again lol
@DJB For the same reason xCloud is coming to XB1 later this year despite the existence of Series X|S. The larger playerbase has the weaker hardware.
I remember when this game had too many rats to run on Switch and they refused to compromise.
Guess the cloud can render rats though
Nice for Switch owners to have the option (although would prefer if was part of a Netflix/Game Pass style subscription model rather than £40 a go)
If it's true that the PS5 version will be free as part of PS Plus for July, I'll be playing A Plague's Tale over there.
I don't understand people complaining about some cloud games on Switch. For a game like this it's likely either:
Having that choice is good.
This game taxes the CPU hard with all the Rat simulation and physics (as well as the GPU for graphics, though that is far more scalable) it just won't be easily possible on the aged Arm 4 processor.
Take it or leave it, it is your choice. But for many this may be the only way they can play this good game.
If you have 39£ for every cloud game on the Switch, i think there's 4 at the moment, or will be once this one comes out, plus money to buy a good bundle of internet, if you want your Switch to be portable with these games, which will be around 30£ or 40£ to say the least; a PS4 or Xbox One in secondhand might cost you way less than this Cloud versions. Just make the accounts.
It makes absolutely no sense for someone to say; oh, i don't have money for another console, and then, buying this Cloud versions, especially because only a small amount of people will have access to a good bandwidth to play this games properly. Otherwise you're just playing on a potato.
@themightyant this argument has been going for ages. The idea of this is that devs will soon see that they don't have to port anything if people still pay full price for a Cloud version that actually doesn't belong to you. And if, just saying, you're willing to pay this amount of money for something that doesn't belong to you, due to reasons, there are services like xCloud, or Stadia, which are far less money, and with the right controller, will make your potato a full console. So, no, they should let the Switch be what she was ment to be, a hybrid that you can dock and undock and still play out of internets reach.
@CarlosM87 I get your point and to be clear I don't think this is black and white for ALL games. My point was about THIS game.
I think you'd accept that some games just can't reasonably run on Switch hardware. (Especially games like this that are CPU heavy) In those cases i'm happy to see a cloud version vs nothing.
Yes that could lead to dev's being lazy potentially and just releasing a cloud version. We don't' want that either, I understand.
Ultimately, as ever, we have to trust the developers to make the right choices for their games within their budgets.
I must have missed the part about Guardians of the Galaxy being a cloud game, oh well, looks like I'll not be playing that on Switch.
@tadams587 Okay but the switch is literally a tablet with buttons. Its running on a ARM Tegra X1 chip made for tablets.
I don't understand the piece meal approach. The Switch can run Nvidia Now, it is the same chip as the Shield TV. Just make a deal to give it access to that service, it could have been in the NSO offerings.
This is a fantastic game for anyone who has not played it. I played it on PS4 Pro, really good. But cloud version for Switch? Yuck.
Cloud gaming has the same problems on Nintendo Switch as it does on other systems. Control was so far the only of the two available worldwide cloud games on the Switch that worked extremely wellat the end of the test: lag wasn't noticeable, and it looked great. Hitman III, not so much. There's the option, at least.
Cloud Suke GOATS you need reliable ISP and that doesn't come cheap for people nor can some get it or aren't close to where they can get one. ISP prices are the handicap you don't just get free internet that's just fantasy whey people talk about Cloud but fail to mention someone has to pay for it. Also if anyone hasn't read the news coming lately Cloud are Prime targets for hacker/cracker are goldmine. So if you thought Cloud was safer then on your Device your living in Cloud9 and will come crashing down fast.
I am someone who doesn't like cloud games but I will never say that it shouldn't exist. An issue is that you are paying full price for a game to stream which eats up data. There will be a point where you use more data streaming it then it would take to download it and that is just one of the many issue I have with it.
Now there are some upside for cloud gaming and is games that wouldn't be able to run on the switch can run and look better through cloud gaming and that is great but I would only recommend doing it is if you don't have another system to play it on.
@SilentHunter382 Now there are some upside for cloud gaming and is games that wouldn't be able to run on the switch can run and look better through cloud gaming
Are we talking defunct stadia. That's a joke right. Until internet is cheap and affordable and everyone has ISP choices don't even mention how good cloud is.
I'm still having problems streaming video on YouTube, I couldn't imagine trying to play a game over the net.
If I didnt have an Xbox or PS4 I'd give it a try but paying full price for cloud is absurd. I dont expect it to be dirt cheap but give an incentive to basically streaming a game and not really owning it
@sixrings i think for comedy purposes, i may just take Slowdive off ignore to see what other hilarious things he can cook up 😅.
I guess these cloud games must be selling somewhere? Right?
I don't actually know of a single person who has played any of these cloud games, but i can't pretend to know 70m Switch users (factoring in people who own 2).
So they have to be doing well? Are there numbers to indicate any of this?
I would genuinely be interested to find out how much exposure these cloud games get on the Switch.
I would be much more inclined to buy a subscription with access to a library of games. Like let's say a cloud based Xbox Game Pass. At least then I'm entiteled to a partial refund should the servers be turned off.
When I put down a bigger one-time payment I want to have access to the game regardless of my internet connection. I will never pay 30-60 for an online-only game that can have it's servers shut down at any time, essentially rendering my purchase pointless.
The only exception to this is if the game is an mmo.
@Thaliard,
Or the Switch Pro rumors are a load of old rubbish, as they have been right from the start, made a little more realistic as initial leaks suggested a more portable version Switch was coming as well, which to be honest was the most predictable thing ever, as Nintendo have pretty much had a home console and portable since time began.
But yes Nintendo will be delaying the Switch Pro to build up stocks, yes that's bound to be the reason for it's current delay .
i love the concept cloud gaming(could be cheaper i agree), so keep them coming.
one day all these plastic waste, logistical polution and energy spilling is terminated like the plague, and streamin will become as good as owning a console itself.
i may be old, but i have a feeling i'm years ahead of time compared to most young people, and i feel way more connected in this time like i was with the nineties. I love this age.
@PALversusNTSC Hopefully not, because I like to own the things I buy.
I'm very confused about Nintendo switch cloud gaming. Do you pay to open the game? Or your paying just to rent it? I'm interested in this but don't know much about this and don't want to waste money.
