While Nintendo continues to focus on the current Switch model and the Switch Lite – both of which are selling better than expected – reports that it's working on a new 'Pro' model refuse to go away.
During Universal Display Corp's recent Q1 investors call (thanks, Spawn Wave), reports regarding the new Switch model using an OLED panel were referenced.
Company CEO and director Steven V. Abramson noted that:
...Nintendo has selected an OLED screen for the new Switch Pro due to OLED benefits of higher contrast and faster response times.
Back in March, we reported on rumours that the new model would include a Samsung-made 7-inch OLED screen. Samsung is one of the many companies which licences phosphorescent OLED tech from Universal Display Corp.
Nintendo is understandably keen to avoid ruining the amazing commercial momentum the Switch currently has by announcing a new model, but it's pretty clear now that a revision is in the works – although it could be that Nintendo chooses to delay its release to ensure that its current Switch models reach their full sales potential.

Now that is interesting, and with a bit of substance.
Another week, another Switch Pro rumor.
Not from Nintendo = Not true.
Now you have my attention, nintendo.
If it isn’t from Nintendo, it is not true at all
This has a little more credibility, but still no official announcement, so still a huge pinch of salt is required.
I just hope they get the preorders out quick. This thing is going to be impossible to get.
Hard to understand what they're saying due to the terrible grammar. Are they referencing their own reports? Or someone else's reports?
I will still be “surprised” by the inevitable hardware announcement. These rumors (and industry commentary) won’t stop that.
Of course Nintendo will eventually release improved hardware. Speculation on the Switch 2 or Pro may as well have begun before the Switch’s launch. We’re in the same boat now as then... just a lot more people saying “yep, it’s closer now than before.”
Don’t know if I’m getting my point across at all, but I just wanna say, fellow fans, you don’t have to roll your eyes and say “we knew this already” when Nintendo announces new hardware. Just enjoy it. On some level it will still be a surprise, even though people have been making easy predictions on this for years.
@sanderev This is different, it's not some random dude on 4chan or Twitter, it's a serious company that accidentally leaked information.
Of course a switch pro is in the works.
Just as the PS6 and Xbox random word X are also already in the works.
Never has been a question of ‘if’ but rather ‘when’ for a successful product.
And I will probably buy a switch pro on day one if the supply is there
That's basically a confirmation, is not it?
@sanderev You do realise Nintendo doesn't make every single component inside the Switch, right?
would be great if switch pro could also play DS games docked... TV and switch as touchscreen
They mention Switch Pro in a business report. Its happening. Whats interesting is how people still pretend its not true.
@Damo NDAs are a thing, though. Also they note "sources", so yeah it's still sketchy.
Also like I said last week. Releasing a Switch Pro right now would be beyond stupid for Nintendo with the current shortages. Also there is still no real competion from the PS5 / XBOX Series X. It would be wise for Nintendo to wait 1/1.5 years right now. And by then we'll have a Switch 2.
E3 here we go, a month left for the hype!
Will time to wait for E3, it's likely Nintendo will save the Switch Pro announcement for the big event. This and Metroid Prime 4 will probably be the highlight of E3 for Nintendo.
Switch is over 4 years old. Switch Pro/2 is definitely in the works, the only question is when.
"...Nintendo has selected an OLED screen for the new Switch Pro due to OLED benefits of higher contrast and faster response times."
When I read this sentence fragment that was posted in the article I certainly thought a new Switch called "Switch Pro" was coming, but when you add in the 13 words that were cut, I suppose for space 😉 it sounds more like just another report on rumours.
"And in the gaming market, there our reports are, for the first time, Nintendo has selected an OLED screen for the new Switch Pro due to OLED benefits of higher contrast and faster response times."
Emphasis should probably be on THERE OUR REPORTS ARE, as hard as our and are read like that in my head. Can a brain get tongue tied?
This isn't as much of a confirmation of something Nintendo is doing, as the sentence fragment makes it appear, as much as there are reports of rumours out there that Nintendo is using on OLED screen.
Sorry guys, I'm as disappointed as all of you, but that's how the complete sentence reads to me. I think it's why the world has the phrase "taken out of context" maybe? 🤷♂️
God another stupid rumor
@sanderev What’s so sketchy about a CEO whose company is working directly with Nintendo making a direct statement about Nintendo selecting a component in the Switch Pro?
@Thelastjedi2007 Someone didn’t read the article!
I'm still holding out for a home console version. It wouldn't even need more power, and without the need for a screen, battery or dock it could be budget friendly or a great second Switch. Another device following exactly the same form factor is just preaching to the converted.
@Sam_TSM I mean... a legitimate company writing about unannounced Nintendo products in an earning call seems like legitimate news to me?
PS/Xbox: Resident Evil Village, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Ratchet & Clank (PS5), etc.
Switch: More Switch Pro rumours
@sanderev It doesn't have to be from Nintendo to be official, damo is right about that, and had the statement said they were making the screens or had signed a deal, as the sentence fragment implies, that would have been good enough for me, I had already fallen for it hook line and sinker, but as the full sentence reads, not so much.
@BloodNinja "making a direct statement" "Someone didn’t read the article!"
Can you point to the direct statement either about the Switch screen or working directly w/ Nintendo? Maybe you read the article but not the source? That only directly references "reports", which is really just another way for saying "rumors" that's just a little more official sounding.
And as for working directly w/ Nintendo, if Nintendo is buying the screens from Samsung and Samsung is buying the screens from UDC, well UDC isn't working w/ Nintendo directly, Samsung is the middle man. Indirectly, maybe, but maybe UDC has no contact w/ Nintendo at all? In other words, why would Nintendo need Samsung if they were working directly with UDC?🤷♂️
A luxury Switch with an OLED screen is not weird or hard to imagine.
An actual Switch "Pro", however, in the same vein as PS4 Pro and XBoneX, is both a bit unlikely and not really to be desired.
Ugh, these switch pro rumors have been going since end of March 2017.
It'll come eventually guys.
I can't wait for the Switch Pro to come out so that the "Switch Pro confirmed" crowd claiming it would be out every year, for the past four years, can finally die off... only to be replaced by the "Switch 2 confirmed" crowd. At least we got a few generations without this level of crazy speculative nonsense.
One of favorite video game memories was a guy in high school that waited so long to get a DS that he got a DSi XL for Christmas, only for the 3DS to he announced a few months later. It may sound mean, but no one likes a late adopter whose only goal is the brag about having the "latest model".
@rjejr The article highlighted it for you in blue. I don’t think a company would announce a rumor in an investors call.
@readyletsgo They're just claiming it every year so they can then claim they were right when it finally comes out. Like we don't all know that an updated or enhanced version of a Nintendo (handheld) console is coming...
@rjejr "When I read this sentence fragment that was posted in the article I certainly thought a new Switch called "Switch Pro" was coming, but when you add in the 13 words that were cut, I suppose for space 😉 it sounds more like just another report on rumours."
Did you not read the bit before that?
"During Universal Display Corp's recent Q1 investors call (thanks, Spawn Wave), reports regarding the new Switch model using an OLED panel were referenced."
And as @bloodninja says, the original tweet is in there with the passage highlighted.
This is an investors call, too. I doubt they would reference anything in these calls that they weren't pretty sure about. Given the nature of the company's business, I think it's fair to say they would be able to make a judgment call on any reports relating to OLED panel orders.
@Grumblevolcano That's unfair, we just had an article about 14 month old Animal Crossing. 😉 And PS runs a "no PS5 stock until 2022" article once a day.
I think after years of devs announcing games 4-5 years before release they're sitting on stuff now. That, and 4k game development seems to take forever. And costs too much, so less games are being made for fear of failure and bankruptcy. So Nintendo spends all of it's time & money on ports.
I'm burned out on Nintendo ATM to be honest, but Switch does have games, just not stuff I'm really into - Miitopia, Snap, MHR, SS HD is coming. I am looking forward to Stories 2, but I may skip it unless Switch gets a MHS 1 port first. Mario Golf has way more people excited than any golf game should. So Switch isn't barren, I just want Pikmin 4 and Bayonetta 3. 😝 And I'll take BotW2.
This article seems legit though. Now if you'll excuse me it's time for my daily damo battle. 😂
@rjejr "Now if you'll excuse me it's time for my daily damo battle."
Thing is, I get paid to have these little 'chats' you enjoy so much. What's your excuse?
@Damo “Thing is, I get paid to have these chats...” That mic drop just shattered all the windows in my house LMAO
Well, there's more proof of it coming up. I mean, console development takes years of planning and contracts, so I can see this being a true thing. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't get mad and "scrap" the Switch pro cause of this company "spilling information" like what they did with Netflix 👀👀👀.
@Slowdive I say if there is a switch pro, I would say 2022 would be the best year. 5th anniversary since the switch came out, maybe Nintendo could celebrate with a more powerful model.
But yeah, I doubt a switch pro will be revealed and come out this year. OR the switch pro will be revelaed but won't come out till next year.
And if there is no switch pro, all those Nintendo fans will be whining that nothing that THEY want is shown at E3
@MisterM360p I say 2022 release is most likely because COVID and stuff like that for switch pro. But I think there is chance that it might not be revealed during E3
Yay a new switch rumor that will swarm YouTube in about 30 minutes. I swear every week it’s different things that are “supposedly in the model” it literally goes from “4K, wait no it’s OLED screen now, now it’s the same size, wait no Bloomberg changed it to being 2 millimeters slightly bigger”. And the switch is doing perfectly fine, they don’t need a new switch. I mean just look at the games Nintendo keeps churning out they look beautiful on the switch, and I don’t think that you need Mario’s hairs in Mario odyssey to be more detailed.
@Slowdive "They are simply stating that if Nintendo is interested they'll most likely go with their technology "
No, what they said was "there are reports Nintendo HAS selected" meaning they're already considering it a done deal, not that they're thinking about it. They're referring to the same reports we all saw that Nintendo had purchased the panels because Samsung had a surplus.
Granted this is far from confirmation because it's just referencing existing rumor, but it does lend it more credibility.
Dang an OLED screen is pretty cool but I really only care about things like an upgraded home menu, wallpapers, folders, badges, streaming services, and and eshop.
@ChakraStomps at that point isn't it just a Wii U?
As a person who has had multiple experiences with Samsung cellphones with OLED screens I hope the new switch will not be using the same panel tech because after a couple years I have seen quite a bit of burn in and flickering issues across different models of high end Galaxy phones. This is just my experience in the company I work with in dealing with multiple users and hopefully across the globe with a larger sample base it's a different story.
Whoops... don't think they were meant to say that...
I'm hoping it would be like the Switch Lite and is released to be an alternative to the standard Switch...
@rjejr I think the "there our reports are" bit was probably a transcription error via text-to-speech software. This was a conference call originally and the audio was probably just converted without too much editing.
Yikes, if legit this is rather bold of Universal Displays to name-drop the Switch Pro like that in an investor call. I suspect Nintendo will want to have words with them.
@Damo "Did you not read the bit before that?"
I did, yeah, but in a rushed way trying to get to the quote. And directly before that I was distracted by Spawn Wave being 2 words b/c I follow them on twittter and I always thought Spawnwave was a take on the Decepticon Shockwave. 🤷♂️
"I think it's fair to say they would be able to make a judgment call"
Do you think the guy making that quote would say it was a fair judgement call to cut off the first half of his sentence for your quote, making it look like he was making a STATEMENT that Nintendo was using OLED for Switch rather than referencing reports of that?
Why did you cut it off, for space, or for misdirection? 🤔
Remember that article you wrote reviewing all of those portable screens that the Switch can be plugged directly into, but you reviewed them w/o actually plugging your Switch into them, you plugged your dock into them, which defeats the main purpose of plug in screens your Switch can plug into, like all of the pictures you posed showed?
It wouldn't surprise me if you say you added that "Editor's note" before I said anything, that I just "missed it", but we both know you only added it b/c I, and perhaps a couple of other people, said something.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/10/feature_which_1080p_portable_monitor_is_right_for_your_nintendo_switch
"Thing is, I get paid to have these little 'chats' you enjoy so much. What's your excuse?"
Someone has to try and keep you legit, we already have 1 IGN, don't need another. And most of the other guys I battle with don't seem to be here any more.😢 And besides, you start way more battles w/ me than I start w/ you. You know there is an Ignore button right? 😉
Let me get this straight: people actually believe that such a company in an investors call would be like "yeah, so we saw some dude on Reddit talking about OLED on Switch Pro, that would be wicked!"
......
Big companies can make stupid decisions, but that's a stretch. Then it's much more likely that it is a non-confirmation in order to not really reveal anything that could burn bridges but still get investors interested when you mention something that could raise the sales drastically
Could have been talking about a potential Switch Pro in the call. It may not have been confirmed to them either? Besides, we're assuming it'll be called a "Switch Pro" anyway. May be Switch Advance for example.
@rjejr "Why did you cut it off, for space, or for misdirection?"
How is it misdirection when the sentence immediately before it clearly states that he's talking about 'reports'? Not my fault you skim-read the piece.
"Remember that article you wrote reviewing all of those portable screens that the Switch can be plugged directly into, but you reviewed them w/o actually plugging your Switch into them, you plugged your dock into them, which defeats the main purpose of plug in screens your Switch can plug into, like all of the pictures you posed showed?"
The fact that you bring up unrelated stuff like this up proves you're itching for some kind of confrontation, and I'm at a loss as to why that might be the case? But fine, here goes.
The images used in that round-up were supplied by the manufacturer and as I didn't have any means of taking decent photos myself at that point, I used them. I'd tested the screens with a dock because I'm super-cautious about that kind of thing, and the editor's note was added after you (and others) pointed this out. That's what's great about online journalism - you can amend and update pieces if anyone is confused or things aren't clear, which is what happened in that case. What relevance that has with the topic at hand I'm not sure.
"And besides, you start way more battles w/ me than I start w/ you. You know there is an Ignore button right?"
Thanks for reminding me!
Hopefully the screen isn't the only upgrade. Otherwise it will be hard to justify the purchase.
switch pro aint happening seriously these people need to stop spreading bs rumors that are not true even nintendo stated theres no new models coming out anytime soon.
There is no substance here. A president is name dropping a rumour to big up OLED screens (with some weird grammer / typos). Nothing concrete.
Well that's it now, the cats out of the bag. Nintendo might as well come clean and give us dates. Otherwise we will just keep guessing.
Mid October release date.
Wonder if nintendo would sue, given that surely, the big N would surely have included an NDA clause in their contract.
@ChakraStomps I didn’t like playing DS games on the Wii U virtual console. It may work for some games, but many games rely on the screens being close together.
I don’t care that the Switch U will have a better screen since it’s always docked for me.
Hurry up, Nintendo. Either confirm or deconfirm it, my OG Switch is dying and I need to know if this hardware revision is real so I can either purchase that or go for a Lite.
@ChakraStomps the switch pro, with NDS games, virtual console, no subscription to use your own internet, and support for most Switch games, is called Wii-U.
i do believe a switch pro is happening but this feels INSANELY MISLEADING, this is being framed as if he's confirming it's existence when he's just trying to talk about how oled is popular and used the switch pro rumors as an example
"There are reports that..." These guys don't have any inside knowledge. They're just commenting on the same rumors everyone else has seen. They're talking up the overall OLED scene, not their own personal involvement in any component they're manufacturing. Fake news!
To which I say... and? There is nothing concrete next to this. It actually means nothing unless we hear more from big N or some other moles.
Yeah, the fact that it’s an investors call means nothing. They’re not under oath. It’s not a direct report on earnings. They’re promoting their business, essentially. And the way this is worded, as bizarre as it is, is literally just a reference to reports that a big name is interested in the thing this business promotes. They might as well be referencing articles such as this one.
Just my take. If I’m wrong, we’ll know eventually. But to me this is less concrete and more oatmeal.
@rjejr that's pretty much how I interpreted that line. They speak of "reports", not specifically their own.
Hooray, more rumors! There's bound to be another model for the Switch coming later this year. Who knows what it will be. Maybe just a v3 of the current model with an OLED screen, maybe an actual more powerful variant... who knows. I'm just waiting for Nintendo to announce the thing already if true lol.
but OLED screen have a tedency to Burn-in, and Switch Switch still selling well with no sight of slowing down, why insist on more powerful hardware with this facts?
I'm really hoping that the "Switch Pro" isn't a vital upgrade from the current Switch model. I'm really hoping that they just upgrade the dock. I mean, honestly, there's so much missed potential with the current dock. It's a USB-C connection, so it could, in theory, support an external GPU to boost the performance and frame rate in docked mode. If Nintendo sold a Switch Dock Pro for $100 - $150 then I would buy it on day one. I play in mostly docked mode anyway.
"...reports that [Nintendo is] working on a new 'Pro' model refuse to go away."
That's because those rumors are essentially true. Nintendo is always working on their next console even if it's years away from being released.
@Giancarlothomaz Well, you only need to worry about burn-in if pixels on the screen stay the same for a really long time. Burn-in can be a problem for PC users because the taskbar at the bottom of the screen stays the same all of the time, so it can burn in at the bottom. The rest of the screen, though, is usually fine. For a console, it's probably fine because so many of the pixels change from game to game and aren't on for long enough to cause burn-in. The PS Vita has an OLED screen and it didn't have a problem with burn-in.
@RiasGremory "even nintendo stated theres no new models coming out anytime soon."
4.6 2012, Nintendo said there will not be any another 3DS model
21.6 2012, 17days later, nintendo announced 3DS Xl model
I'll never understand why some people are so hellbent on trying to convince people that Nintendo isn't going to release an updated version of a handheld console in 4-5 years after launch when the last handheld console they didn't have an updated version in 4-5 years was the original Game Boy. If you weren't willing to bet money on a new Switch model by 2022, back in 2017, you just don't pay attention to Nintendo history. Most of us were calling the "Slim/Lite" and the "mid-gen" back before launch day - any other outcome would be a shocker.
I'm not sure I'll get it if OLED is the only option.
If I remember correctly, not long after the Wii was released, somebody at Nintendo, most likely Miyamoto, said that Nintendo is always working on new hardware.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Dont forget BotW 2
What SoC is currently available and viable to replace the aging Tegra X1 that will actually fit inside the Switch and not melt it to rubble?
Both Intel nor AMD have any such SoC available.
So. The harsh reality is that there isn't any currently available on the market that could beat the Tegra X1 other than the Tegra X2, but that one is an Automotive oriented SoC not really made for game consoles, like the X1 was (NVidia Shield).
The only option, without Nintendo having to completely redevelop a new engine again for a different manufacturer SoC (and so kill any compatibility with current Switch games), is to go for the Tegra X2, but that SoC is just too expensive still and not worth the hefty price tag for the limited performance increase it offers.
The only real solution that could be feasible within near future is adding a dedicated eGPU into a new Docking station that would offer the rumored 4K capabilities through NVidia DLSS, where Nintendo then releases an updated Nintendo Switch alongside this eGPU dock with updated USB-C 3.2 port and this new OLED screen. This package would then be called the Switch Pro, which obviously would be at least 100 bucks more expensive (due to more expensive eGPU dock) and so be sold alongside the current Switch console line-up. This way they keep compatibility with current Switch games across all Switch consoles.
@NEStalgia I just came here for the laughs, and boy did I get them. But it most definitely also made me shake my head at SO much ignorance and armchair criticism and "knowitall-ism".
It's a goddamned investor report of an official partner (linked to and/or) of Nintendo, no if's, and's or but's about it. Can't get more official and insider knowledge-based than that. It's actually just Nintendo's dumb ignorance/stubbornness of not wanting to confirm the facts, and simply choosing their own moment to officially announce it, even if everything is already out on the table.
Personally, I also feel that this is what sparks all the "it ain't true until Nintendo says it is" comments, which are basically just blind fanboyism, denying any and all possibilities of any other company than Nintendo themselves also being in the know of their upcoming plans. As if that's even possible, in today's day and age...
@sanderev It’s OK to be loyal to Nintendo for gaming news but, don’t be a sheep your entire life.
@ThanosReXXX At this point I expect Switch Pro to appear on Phil Spencer's bookshelf at least 6 months before Nintendo announces it officially.
@Jeronan There is an Nvidia SOC available and viable - Xavier is their most recent Tegra chipset, which can run as low as 10w and has a Volta based GPU with Tensor cores that could support DLSS. Interestingly, in his 3rd post, @Slowdive linked to a NateDrake rumour that suggests that Nintendo are getting a customised chip (as well as the Switch Plus not appearing until next year).
I honestly don't know what's going to happen at this point, but I'll be funny if this entire year passes and there's still no Switch Pro announcement.
Then everyone will be like "We're definitely getting the Switch Pro next year!"...I'll just be over here facepalming or something. lol
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really don't want there to be a "Switch Pro". It would almost be an insult to the Switch's absolutely massive install base which continues to grow. The Switch doesn't really have any competition from the new generation of consoles since the Switch is it's own thing. Creating a Switch pro with all the features the internet is expecting would be very costly, and frankly silly given that Nintendo currently has a whole section of the market to themselves. In my personal opinion, the best way to go about releasing a Switch Pro would be a "Pro Dock" sold separately. If Nintendo could find a way to add the enhancements to the dock rather than the console it would be a win for most people. It would likely be much cheaper, it would be easier for people who already own a Switch to upgrade, and they could still sell "Switch Pro" bundles by switching out the regular dock for a Pro Dock. There could even be themed Pro Docks. The only downside I can think of would be the loss of handheld mode. But honestly the vast majority of people begging for a Switch Pro don't really care about handheld mode anyway. Either way, those are just my thoughts. We'll have to wait to see if Nintendo will announce anything.
@B_Lindz good, i was worried the rumored and higly antecipated Switch Pro would suffer negativaly Burn-in, considering many reports/rumors state the console is gonna use a OLED display well know for his problem of Burn-in
If a Switch Pro or something does happen, only thing I want...is for them to make it so setting up surround sound is much easier. Why does Nintendo not want to buy licenses for Dolby or something? Why make things complicated for us?
I can confirm that Nintendo will release a new console in the future. That’s all cleared up for everyone now! Xxx
@sanderev i never trust these
@Beep_Beep there would be no use for one. the switch is aimed at a younger audience. why get a switch pro when you could get a ps5?
@T0biasCZe thats different dude switch is doing just fine without any major upgrades to the specs their saving that for switch 2.
@Ahat130 switch is actually aimed for young adults not just for kids.
'Nintendo is understandably keen to avoid ruining the amazing commercial momentum the Switch currently has by announcing a new mode?' I'll buy one regardless! I'm assuming most Switch owners would 🤷🏾♂️ Who wouldn't?!
@Ahat130
You have a point, but the Switch is more aimed at everyone. Nintendo does have a focus on children but they aren't afraid to appeal to others.
This is absolute crap. If this is proven to be a real statement it is only a spin up to show movement in the OLED business. Nothing confirmed(hence the rumor mention) or real time in regards to actual Nintendo plans. In addition there are spelling errors which leads me to believe this is faked.
I really truly love Nintendo
@Sam_TSM bro its never that serious. Y'all kill me. You could've easily scrolled past this and not click on the article at all. But u didn't. How can you get this upset at a Nintendo themed website for reporting on Nintendo related news. Make it make sense.
@Sam_TSM
While I do understand your frustrations, this is an entire company/website literally dedicated to every single thing Nintendo, and whether that is big or small, significant or insignificant, this is what has made them stay in business. I also want to point out that even at the end of your tiresome Monday, you still decided to read and comment on this article, hence only proving their reasoning as to why it should exist in the first place.
Like I said elsewhere, a matter of why the heck even "reports" submitted to a tech company CEO use the "Switch Pro" fanspeak. Even though a display upgrade sounds more probable on paper (as something along the lines of 2019's revision), even the source's conditional mood wouldn't warra- oh, RIGHT, I forgot this thing is supposed to have the model-exclusive BotW 2, run Cyberpunk 2077 and make coffee. That's why everyone is so hungry for every single "rumour" about it, and that's why no one even makes an effort to come up with any name but a "Console Pro".😄
Them calling it Nintendo Switch Pro just makes it.... umm well who said it will be called Switch Pro?
I thought there was a global chip shortage. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is the true cause of delays
@NEStalgia The funny and at the same time infinitely sad thing is that this actually wouldn't even be completely outside the realm of possibilities...
@Moistnado that sounds cool... I might score a cheap one
@ChakraStomps me too actually
These rumours of a new console/revision in my mind are ridiculous. Having played games from the Nes upto now, unless otherwise stated by the company. The default position is they a researching the next console. Its always how long before they release it , unless they say otherwise.
@RiasGremory yeah, but its aimed at young people, and not competetive and pro gamers.
@Jam78 I mean they are making their next generation system already that's 100% guaranteed, Nintendo starts making their next generation system almost as soon as the current one is out so they are making a switch 2 right now we know that much, it's more beneficial than the jump generations in a year or two then it would be to just have a pro version of a system that's getting weaker compared to the rest.
@Jokerwolf They may well have a pro version coming, the Wii was less powerful than the competition from release and they never upgraded that. Granted it didn't have all the games but also sold like crazy regardless. I think Nintendo least powerful consoles have sold better than the ones that had power. Ultimately we will find out are these leaks to do with a pro or a switch 2 further down the line. Nintendo still say the current model is half way through its life cycle so whether that includes an upgrade we shall find out. Like the 3DS i think it will be a small upgrade (assuming there is one) and the bells and whistles will come with switch 2
Well.....so we'll get OLED tech for sure.....maybe....LoL....look OLED is OK but lets remember this tech has been around a while and it does have some advantages but it also has some drawbacks. I liked its vibrancy on my OG Vita but the black levels seemed high making a lot of games look overly contrasty (if that's a word). As for everyone wishing for a 'super dock'. I am not sure how this could work, unless the dock contained the entire SoC plus the system's RAM. The USB3 bus is not a full speed bus and just isn't going to move GPU/CPU data thru it. If they essentially made the pro the dock, then you would only be moving data from the game cart and sd card thru the USB3 bus which would be more possible. This could produce the better output for the TV but is that really all that anyone wants 4yrs+ after the original came out?
As others have said....the Switch just came off its best fiscal year and sold 28M units......why mess with that? They projected 25M for this fiscal year which will then put the system's (all models) lifetime sales over 110M.....surpassing all other N systems except the DS. They are not going to announce a Pro unless they can be ready to ship it in mass quantities and given the current state of chip shortages, as well as distribution and retail issues, they aren't going to do anything stupid to step on the insane sales of the current SKUs. I would just be happy to see them get back to releasing some of the long awaited games we know they are working on .
@Jam78 I will say just because it's halfway through its life cycle doesn't mean a next-gen system won't come out Nintendo already committed to games from their first party being backwards compatible with hardware that might be more powerful which I'm assuming would be the next gen switch, from a processing standpoint it probably won't be that much more powerful than the current chip that they would use, the Pro would be very much similar to the X1 that's in there now and it would just have an extra core dedicated to AI upscaling and a better screen.
