@Casual/Core debate - The bottom line is this. Nintendo raised an issue with its devotees with their obsession with pleasing their new demographic. We devotees accepted/denied the existence of their family friendly approach taken with past consoles, but the casual obsession has pushed more than a few Nintendo fans (like me) to finally consider the competition. Those of us that think a casual market exists are disgusted with N's current state. Since the customer "is always right," our opinion is all that matters or should matter to Nintendo. If we think that Nintendo is focusing too much on casual games, then they had better damn well start giving us some attention because the customer IS always right and IS the force behind Nintendo. Once these casuals tire of the Wii series, Nintendo will have sucked their wallets of all they can get, but Nintendo can release a number of core (good) games to us cores, and we'll buy up every last copy. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the fastest selling Nintendo game of all time, and this is no coincidence. Nintendo has starved us of core games (whether they truly exist is irrelevant, we think the do, therefore they do because the customer is always right), so we swarmed on March 9 to the closest midnight launch. For this reason, Nintendo should respect and cater to cores again before it's too late and N realises that the casual demographic is not a lasting one. Come on, Nintendo, hear us!
@Wiiloveit - -tards? Yes. I didn't think Nintendo would lower WiiWare prices, but that's why I said it would only happen in an ideal world. I think a higher price is what you pay for immediate gratification. I wouldn't feel "left out" if they cut the price. I have no doubt that that is just an excuse, but I didn't expect much less. They didn't wait too long to cut GameCubes to about 100 bucks (and they eventually sold for even less). If Nintendo followed in the footsteps of the GameCube (which, and this is saddening, would be an improvement in many ways) and released Player's Choice games again, I wouldn't feel sad about paying $50 (or however much of your currency ) for a copy at or near launch. I care about playing a game when it comes out, so I'll pay the price. That's how it works. For example, I just got started on the Metroid Prime series (after realizing that I had no idea what was going on in MP3:C), and I got MP for 7 dollars. I may not be paying 50 bucks, but I still have to crank through the first two games in the sub-series before I can open MP3 again, and I also had to wait several years for it to be that cheap (okay I didn't wait, I just never got around to it but the point remains). But in reference to the Wii, you can't sell a Wii for $250 a year before the next-gen comes out, whenever that is. They'll have to drop it eventually, but only when it becomes necessary.
I'm holding off on the PC version so I can fully appreciate this game. Everyone seems to like it, so I'd like it to be a fresh experience when I play it. Isn't Balrog the same name as that one guy on Street Fighter II?
@Adamant - You've got a point. Just about all (if not all) of the Sonic games have seen a cash in... umm... I mean compilation release by Sega on the Cube (among other systems, but it's technically only fair to assume that a user of this site only has a Wii, at least current-gen, I doubt many do, but maybe a few), but VCR didn't give them a 1. I know that's not what this review was based on, but I like your logic.
I'll probably pass on this one. I already have Space Invaders Revolution for DS, which has this (I know, SIR isn't very good, but that's not the point). Even if I didn't have this on another platform, I refuse to pay 8 bucks for it. That's the major problem: the price. I know there's a fixed rate for SNES games, but for something as itty bitty as this, there's no excuse to not lower the price. This is achievable on far more inferior systems.
@WarioFan63 - Exactly. At least if we have a bad week we know we get at least one more game the next week without fail. I think some of us here tend to take the weekly updates for granted (maybe not the Europeans, but definitely the Americans).
@WarioFan63- I try to remind myself of that whenever I think a VC week sucks. Whenever life sucks I just think of Captain Olimar's life . Nerdy perspective putters FTW!
Notice- There is a new Wii Menu update! Nintendo had the nerve to send me a notification email triggering a bright blue light at approximately 12:50 AM to let me know. I was awfully appreciative that since the update doesn't appear to do much of anything. I'll just trust that it helped a little and move on.
There have been worse weeks. If Nintendo released all of their good games week after week, they would be run dry by now. Besides, I, and I doubt I'm alone in this, have plenty of VC games I still need to beat from weeks past like Earthworm Jim (even SMRPG!). No huge complaint for me.
@Mr. Cheez- I feel the same way. Spending 10 bucks on a very short game seems like a hard pill to swallow considering I got the multi-hour MM9 for the same amount, and I recently got Metroid Prime for 7 bucks (granted, that's not what it cost at launch... and yes, I know I'm quite late). Wait! That's it! They should have virtual price drops for games that are more than a year old (yes, I know Lost Winds isn't, nor is any WiiWare game). I know it's really not a good idea, but in an ideal world...
Well... This isn't the best week for me, but I don't have any money or points, so it doesn't matter. On a positive note, we are (sort of) approaching 300 VC games in the US. I hate to mention (since it's so overdone), but could it be EarthBound? Only time will tell.
@Wiiloveit - Huh, I've only posted here 193 times, and that counts all of the VCR WiiWare articles that were ported over here...
I've made 168 comments on VCR, and I've been commenting (I started visiting before I started commenting) there since June 16, 2007. I apparently don't have as much to say as many of you...
Wiiloveit - If you're being sarcastic about the name thing, please share who you think it is. I feel like I'm missing something...
I really can't tell what this game is about...
@shadows - The bottom line is that you shouldn't trust anyone but the publisher/developer. Crazy, I know. Wait until HV gives a date for the game, then talk. I asked a game store (who shall remain nameless) for a release date once, and they were wrong by several days. You also used the term "let alone" in the wrong context. You could use some grammar check-ups too. Try this... "Yeah, well I'll believe them before you, especially since their list says Animal Crossing City Folk comes out Nov. 16, which it does, and I have a copy reserved, stupid. Don't forget this completely unrelated sentence. Star wars Lightsaber Duels comes out in a couple days."
Seriously, that's annoying. I probably changed 30 things. At least throw in some periods so I can read it . Anyway, my spell of rudeness is over .
@Big=Sexy- Exactly. I pull SMG back out all of the time to go back and play my favorite stars. I also try to find ways to get stars "the hard way." For example, I have gotten the star Trouble on the Tower without pressing any buttons. I actually have a website with a list of those kinds of challenges here (I get about one visitor in a blue moon. Maybe posting here will get a hit or two...). Anyway, I think Galaxy is overall a better buy. I've gotten all stars w/ both brothers and 9999 star bits with Luigi, and I still find it fun.
EDIT: Hooray! Since I posted a link (above) to my website, I've had a massive traffic increase (it's still modest, less than 100 hits a day by fewer than 20 different people, but that's way more than before). Thanks to anyone who checked it out. Remember, if you know any tricks, please post them in the guestbook or send them directly to me via the contact form. I apologize for the lack of many tricks (at least for Sunshine), but with the exception of one or maybe two, all of the tricks were found by me. I can only come up with so many. Please send me any tricks or (interesting) glitches you've found. I'd love to expand the site. It helps me practice HTML too.
@FroguinZX - I was being sarcastic. Since I said I enjoy Guitar Hero, though, I can still enjoy the occasional casual game, like Mario Kart. I don't base my purchases entirely on whether or not something's casual or core, but I do think that those classifications exist.
I refuse to agree that SMG is casual. I don't think a game being universally enjoyable makes it a casual game. If everyone liked Gears of War, that wouldn't make it casual. It just inherently isn't. I generally classify a game as casual when it has little structure/story, and its sole purpose is almost entirely for half-baked fun. Such games would include the whole Wii series (Wii Sports, Play, etc.), Mario Paint, Nintendogs, and even Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero, however is one of the rare casual games that is not half-baked and is thoroughly enjoyable (to those of us that have limited musical ability).
All of that aside, I think this game looks pretty bad. It looks like a ripoff of WoG, but it doesn't look nearly as good (not to mention not nearly as polished).
@FroguinZX - Yeah, there are no core and casual games, just like there are no tiers for Brawl... Yeah, I could easily compare Pikmin to Wii Play or Zelda to Nintendogs; the four definitely appeal to the same crowd . I'm sorry for the sarcasm, but IMHO there are definitely core and casual games. To say there aren't is to pretty much say there is no such thing as a genre.
Oh, and a general comment... Why does everyone think getting 120 stars on Galaxy is such tricky business? I got all 120 with Mario in 5 days, and I wasn't exactly playing for hours on end. I also thought all of the Purple Coin challenges were exceedingly easy; I lost no more than a life or two on any of them.
I agree with Starwolf. My first run through took a few hours, but I still have several levels left to beat, and I have many I want to get OCD honors on (if only I still had room for it). It's well worth the purchase. Now that I think about it, I need to move that back on my Wii. Unfortunately that means I'll have to take off several games I haven't finished... This goes back once again to storage...
@Djungelurban- You're thinking of bimonthly. Biweekly means twice a week, not once every two weeks. Wait... I just checked. Biweekly can be used to mean either twice a week or once every two weeks. How worthless! Anyway, I guess it works in good context, and it is in good context in your case. I definitely agree with you. We Americans get good service (not always good games, but good service ), so NoE needs to pick it up.
@Versus22- I'd like to thank you for posting the Canadian list so diligently. It's always nice to see different perspectives.
@AlexSays - Why... thank you! Since you were so nice about it, I feel bad about calling your first argument terrible. I'll think of something nicer and edit the comment . I think a fast food restaurant is a good model for exactly what's going on with the Wii. Unfortunately, patience is a virtue that most do not have. The drive-through customer, whiny Nintendo fan I am makes me disapprove of Nintendo's current storage options, and I am not alone (as you pointed out). I think that a McDonald's (Ninendo) with a closed drive-through line would cause many people to swing by the Burger King (Xbox) instead. Okay, so memory hasn't cut that seriously into Wii sales, if at all, but it's still irritating. The fact that there are so many people that want a drive-through line (or faster/more convenient data access) warrants Nintendo to fix the problem because it is something that should not have been present in the first place.
@WiiLoveit - I made my avatar a Pikmin, not Corbie . My avatar has been changed without my consent before (from one Mario avatar to a similar but better looking avatar, it didn't bother me). I'm probably gonna change my avatar back to Luigi one of these days, but I kind of like the Pikmin...
@Dazza - Nice.
@all- The mystery of the disappearing comments continues! I had one removed at VCR (unless I'm mistaken). Why does this keep happening to me ?!?!
@cyko - I've only tried Orbient so far, and I love it. When I get the others, I'll let you know what I think. I'm still working on Orbient. It's a really fun game, especially for the price.
Hmm... I somehow missed this article. I'd get this, but my N64 controllers are falling apart, which sucks because I got Majora's Mask a while ago from a friend, but my controls suck.
@Luigison - I haven't tried it, but Daz gave a pretty good summary of the controller in one of the old news articles. I'd reread that to decide if I were you. I think the Classic Controller is your best bet for this game (the cords don't bother me, but as you said, several wireless alternatives exist). The GameCube controller just seems a bit awkward. The X button just shouldn't be used for something as important as jumping.
@Atlantis1982- Oh, sorry. Yeah, that doesn't bother me either. It could be because I first played Mega Man on MMAC. I find the regular setup a bit more natural, and I have the configuration set to the normal setting on MM9, but the Cube configuration really isn't bad. If I can beat Mega Man 1 & 2 on the Cube version, anyone can. I'm still working on 3-8, but I'll finish them one of these days. I've actually been working on finishing some Cube games I failed to beat back when I first got them, like Pikmin and Sunshine (my copy was broken, so I was literally 1 shine sprite away from accessing the final boss stage. My disc started to freeze on the cutscene where Shadow Mario steals Mario's F.L.U.D.D. right before I beat the last FLUDD-less stage). Actually, I beat Sunshine and Pikmin a while ago, so it's really just MMAC and Metroid Prime (also broken, thanks, GameStop) I need to catch up on.
My comment!?! 'Tis gone! Suspects include: Corbie (just kidding) Seriously, though, why was my comment deleted?
It went approximately like this. Corbie, you must have been the one that replaced my avatar ages ago. Anyway, I look forward to the Yummy review, but I come with the presupposition that it will be bad (the game, not the review, Corbie )
Yeah, about like that. I left off the last part of the former comment, which might have been asking for deletion.
@Atlantis1982- GameCube games play on Wii, so there's no need to switch.
On a side note... Give me an "M"; give me an "E"; give me an "H". What does that spell? Meh! I already have this on MMAC, but I definitely recommend it to anyone that doesn't have access to the game.
Oh, and the Pikmin is the last of my new avatars. After a while I'll likely switch back to Luigi.
@AlexSays - "There is no problem. You can't play two games at the same time, so you really only need one game on your console at a time. This just gives people something else to complain about. I'm glad Nintendo isn't wasting valuable resources on fixing this "problem"." That's a weak argument. If I have two cars, would I not want a two car garage? No, I'd like a one car garage, and I'd like to walk ten minutes to get to my other car whenever I or one of my family members wants to use it. Sure, I can't drive two cars at once, but that doesn't mean I don't want convenient access to both. Similarly, would you have liked it if Nintendo had made you get a new memory card for every new GameCube game you got? Would you have liked it if they had made you get a new SNES for every SNES game you wanted to play? Sure they did that with Game & Watches, but that was due to technical limitations, not an oversight of epic proportions. I often agree with you, Alex, but you are just enabling Nintendo to pass off a horrible hard drive for the casuals. That'll put us one step closer to what we want... not. Secondly, Nintendo is obviously not leaping massive chasms to make a memory solution. They've got new Mario and Zelda games in the works for the Wii, and they haven't released a proper Mario sequel on a system that already has a proper Mario title since the Super Nintendo (if you count Yoshi's Island, otherwise it would be the NES). They clearly have the resources and time.
Wow. The game looks like good fun, but the memory bit is making me hesitant. I'll have to think about this one when it goes live over here. @Draygone - I don't think it's a great strategy either. It's a game that appeals mostly to the core gamer, and the core gamer is going to be the one with less memory.
I'm unfamiliar with all of these games. That's not the first time that's been the case when I've downloaded a game, and VCR has never lead me wrong (except for Splatterhouse, which I just don't like). I hope these make their way over here eventually.
I really, really like this game. I think it's a great platformer, and it is just a joy to play. The gameplay varies in practically every level which ups the challenge and the enjoyment. I think the music is fair to good depending on the level, and the animation is just fantastic. 5/5
@StarWolf_UK- I checked the list today, and the only changes are as follows: 16 (17) - Strong Bad Episode 1 - Homestar Ruiner 17 (16) - Art Style: Cubello 18 (18) - Art Style: Orbient 19 (19) - LostWinds 20 (-) - Art Style: Rotohex
@Nintendork - Exactly. I have enough basic programming knowledge to make a simple but addicting game (i.e. I could re-create Defend Your Castle), but I have no creativity. WoG is a testament to what a combination of the two can do. Okay, so the programmer for WoG has way more talent that I do, but I can dream, can't I?
@Starwolf_UK - I should be able to check the US charts tomorrow. I might even post the VC charts since I'm such a nice guy .
On a side note, here is my ideal Top 5 (in terms of sales, not necessarily which I think is best) 1. Toki Tori 2. World of Goo 3. Art Style: Orbient 4. Alien Crush Returns 5. Mega Man 9 I think that Mega Man 9 is the best game of the bunch, but I think Toki Tori's Top 20 spot is long overdue, and I think that World of Goo, Orbient, and ACR fit into the spirit of WiiWare better. Again this list is in terms of ideal sales, and not necessarily which game is better. Toki Tori and WoG win the prize for the most WiiWare-like games. They are perfect fits, and they should do the best even though I think Mega Man 9 is a bit better than they are.

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Brain Challenge and Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam
@WiiLoveit - I made my avatar a Pikmin, not Corbie . My avatar has been changed without my consent before (from one Mario avatar to a similar but better looking avatar, it didn't bother me). I'm probably gonna change my avatar back to Luigi one of these days, but I kind of like the Pikmin...
@Dazza - Nice.
@all-
The mystery of the disappearing comments continues! I had one removed at VCR (unless I'm mistaken). Why does this keep happening to me ?!?!
Re: USA VC Update: Mega Man 3
@Manicfatty- That is amazing. I need one of those adapters for NES controllers.
Re: World of Goo Coming to WiiWare in Europe!
This is great news, Europe. WoG is the model after which every WiiWare game should be made, not necessarily in genre or style, but in quality.
Re: Target Toss Pro Bags Coming To US WiiWare On Monday
@Tides of Chaos - Tetris Party got the Balance Board down if you count that.
This could be better than it looks, but not by much.
@Hydroswimmer12 - Pong Toss broke the Top 20; why wouldn't this?
Re: Tetris Party
@Terranigma- I second the cousin remark!
Re: Art Style: Orbient
@cyko - I've only tried Orbient so far, and I love it. When I get the others, I'll let you know what I think. I'm still working on Orbient. It's a really fun game, especially for the price.
Re: Art Style Series Coming To Europe Soon
Congratulations, Europe. That seems to be about all I have to say...
Re: World of Goo - New info and screenshots
@KnucklesSonic8- Nailed it.
Re: ESRB Update: EarthBound Finally Coming To Virtual Console!
All right! Wait...
Re: N64 Controller Mod For Virtual Console
Hmm... I somehow missed this article. I'd get this, but my N64 controllers are falling apart, which sucks because I got Majora's Mask a while ago from a friend, but my controls suck.
Re: Earthworm Jim
@Luigison - I haven't tried it, but Daz gave a pretty good summary of the controller in one of the old news articles. I'd reread that to decide if I were you. I think the Classic Controller is your best bet for this game (the cords don't bother me, but as you said, several wireless alternatives exist). The GameCube controller just seems a bit awkward. The X button just shouldn't be used for something as important as jumping.
Re: USA VC Update: Mega Man 3
@Atlantis1982- Oh, sorry.
Re: USA WiiWare Update: Brain Challenge and Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam
My comment!?! 'Tis gone!
Suspects include:
Corbie (just kidding)
Seriously, though, why was my comment deleted?
It went approximately like this.
Corbie, you must have been the one that replaced my avatar ages ago. Anyway, I look forward to the Yummy review, but I come with the presupposition that it will be bad (the game, not the review, Corbie )
Yeah, about like that. I left off the last part of the former comment, which might have been asking for deletion.
Re: USA VC Update: Mega Man 3
@BadKnux - Or they could let you rent games like iTunes lets you rent movies.
Re: USA VC Update: Mega Man 3
@Atlantis1982- GameCube games play on Wii, so there's no need to switch.
Re: Review: Space Invaders Get Even (WiiWare)
@AlexSays - "There is no problem.
You can't play two games at the same time, so you really only need one game on your console at a time.
This just gives people something else to complain about.
I'm glad Nintendo isn't wasting valuable resources on fixing this "problem"."
That's a weak argument.
Re: Review: Space Invaders Get Even (WiiWare)
@7th lutz - Well put. I think the game looks good, but I will probably not buy it until there's a (good) memory solution.
Re: Review: Space Invaders Get Even (WiiWare)
Wow. The game looks like good fun, but the memory bit is making me hesitant. I'll have to think about this one when it goes live over here.
@Draygone - I don't think it's a great strategy either. It's a game that appeals mostly to the core gamer, and the core gamer is going to be the one with less memory.
Re: OFLC Update: M.U.S.H.A and More
I'm unfamiliar with all of these games. That's not the first time that's been the case when I've downloaded a game, and VCR has never lead me wrong (except for Splatterhouse, which I just don't like). I hope these make their way over here eventually.
Re: Earthworm Jim
I really, really like this game. I think it's a great platformer, and it is just a joy to play. The gameplay varies in practically every level which ups the challenge and the enjoyment. I think the music is fair to good depending on the level, and the animation is just fantastic. 5/5
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (5th Nov)
@SmaMan - I'm getting it eventually, I just haven't had the money. I hope its sales pick up too.
Re: EU WiiWare Update: Alien Crush Returns, Brain Challenge and Space Invaders Get Even
I'm still not sure what to think of Space Invaders Get Even. I'll have to check the review.
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (5th Nov)
@StarWolf_UK- I checked the list today, and the only changes are as follows:
16 (17) - Strong Bad Episode 1 - Homestar Ruiner
17 (16) - Art Style: Cubello
18 (18) - Art Style: Orbient
19 (19) - LostWinds
20 (-) - Art Style: Rotohex
The rest of the list is the same as yesterday.
Re: Review: World of Goo (WiiWare)
@Objection_Blaster - WoG doesn't have the easiest learning curve. You'll get the hang of it soon enough.
Re: World of Goo
@Nintendork - Exactly. I have enough basic programming knowledge to make a simple but addicting game (i.e. I could re-create Defend Your Castle), but I have no creativity. WoG is a testament to what a combination of the two can do. Okay, so the programmer for WoG has way more talent that I do, but I can dream, can't I?
Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (5th Nov)
@Starwolf_UK - I should be able to check the US charts tomorrow. I might even post the VC charts since I'm such a nice guy .
On a side note, here is my ideal Top 5 (in terms of sales, not necessarily which I think is best)
1. Toki Tori
2. World of Goo
3. Art Style: Orbient
4. Alien Crush Returns
5. Mega Man 9
I think that Mega Man 9 is the best game of the bunch, but I think Toki Tori's Top 20 spot is long overdue, and I think that World of Goo, Orbient, and ACR fit into the spirit of WiiWare better. Again this list is in terms of ideal sales, and not necessarily which game is better. Toki Tori and WoG win the prize for the most WiiWare-like games. They are perfect fits, and they should do the best even though I think Mega Man 9 is a bit better than they are.
