Re: Donkey Kong

Clayfrd

@Corbie - Yeah, I miss that level. I remember it from DK64. I can't get to it in the arcades, though...

Re: Review: Alien Crush Returns (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

This is good news. I'm broke, but I've got other games to work on until I can save up for this.
Corbie, does this have rumble? I like how Metroid Prime Pinball had the rumble pack, and it seems like a good feature for a pinball game.

Re: USA VC Update: Space Harrier

Clayfrd

I'm really tired of hearing about Earthbound. Hasn't history shown that N always releases big games after release numbers divisible by 50 (i.e. 50, 100, 150...)? SMRPG was 250, I think Zelda 2 was 100; you get the picture. It'll be 300 before we should even wish for EB.

Re: Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (29th Oct)

Clayfrd

@Stratos- Too good for Galaxy, are you? I'm all for 3rd party support, but all told, Nintendo has always produced the best games for their systems. I still plan on getting Okami and deBlob if their shelf life lasts long enough for me to get some money/until Christmas. I already have NMH and GH3, and I plan on getting Rock Band 2. I refuse to support garbage like the cut-down version we (Wii) were offered of Rock Band 1, and if RB2 outsells it, maybe they'll get the message.

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Alien Crush Returns and Home Sweet Home

Clayfrd

@Mr. Cheez - I also didn't receive a warm welcome. I joined VCR early in its life, though. I also didn't actually make any posts for a while after I joined, so a welcome would have been late anyway. If it makes you feel any better... Welcome, Mr. Cheez!

@bboy2970- I'm glad you like it. You should try the original if you have any points left from all that buying you've been doing.

@Topic- I still need points . I'll have fun with alternate pinball games this week because I'm gonna play Metroid Prime Pinball (DS), Kirby's Pinball Land (GB), and the original AC (TG-16/Wii) to prepare for more pinball madness. I wish Nintendo sold Wii Points in smaller amounts so we poor folks could afford those extra points we lost when we got EWJ... Maybe someone could randomly offer to gift me the game .

Re: Earthworm Jim

Clayfrd

@Outrunner- Yeah, I've had trouble with the Snot guy. I just beat him, though.

@All- Does anyone know if it's possible to make Jim jump above the rope/chain he's hanging from? If so, what button do you press?

Re: Gradius Rebirth Gets ESRB Rated

Clayfrd

@Corbie - Good luck with the website. I'll check it out.

@Topic- This is good news. I'm trying to get into shmups, so I'll probably try this if it's any good. Apparently I missed something because I had no idea Alien Crush was supposed to be out soon. That's great news, and I don't know how that passed me by! I'll have to search far and wide for some points unless it's 500 points by some divine miracle.

Re: Corbie's Top 20 Virtual Console Releases - Part 2

Clayfrd

@Corbie(7)- While I admire your list and agree that most of the games are great (although I own about 1/4 of them), my idea of a top 20 is a bit different. I don't think it should be based on the writer's biases. For example, you listed Bio Miracle as #20, I believe. I (and I'm not alone in this) think that BMBU is a stale, unexciting platformer. I am glad you enjoy it, and I know others do too, but I think that such an obscure cult game should be left off. I personally think that No More Heroes is one of the best 3rd party releases for a Nintendo system in years, but if I were to make a top 20 list for 3rd party Nintendo releases, I'd probably leave it off. Just because I think it's great doesn't mean that it's top 20 worthy; there are so many people that would disagree. Basically, I think a top 20 should involve 3 or 4 people throwing ideas in and picking the best of the bunch. You just seemed to leave of Zelda and Metroid for the sake of doing so. It looks more like a list that, for the most part, would be better titled "Top 20 VC Games You've Never Heard Of." Still, I don't want to flame, and it's not a bad list. I did like the list for the recommendations it gave, and it makes me want to try some games I was considering passing on before, like GoT.
Edit: Aww, the pumpkin is gone .

@Captain_Konami- It seems that the opposite (in terms of series seconds) seems to be true these days. Pikmin 2 (I think) is better than Pikmin, Halo 2 is better than Halo (so I hear; I don't care much for the series), and Melee is better than Smash on the 64. Unfortunately, regarding another big step for older franchises, many series took a blow from the 3d transition... I won't mention any hedgehogs' names.

Re: USA VC Release - Earthworm Jim

Clayfrd

Hooray, 100 comments. I just got EWJ, and I'm liking it so far. I find it difficult not because it has difficult enemies or hard levels, but because the gameplay mechanics are far different from what I'm used to in a platformer. Despite this, I'm still having a lot of fun with it. Good stuff.
@deadly.by.design- I have an EWJ action figure too! I actually have two. One is his regular suit, and one is a scuba version. I got it long before I played this game, though. I got it because of his appearance in Clayfighter 63 1/3. I thought he had such a unique, defined, and weird personality that I had to like him. So, when I saw his action figure, I couldn't resist.

Re: USA VC Release - Earthworm Jim

Clayfrd

Huh. I wish I'd saved my points better. I really want this game.
@Mr. Cheez - Come on! How many avatars have you had up to now? I'm actually thinking about starting a cycle with avatars. I'll do it in thirds of a year. The first third will be the SMW Mario sprite, which VCR took the liberty of replacing my original lower-quality Mario avatar with without my consent (okay, I didn't care that much ). The second will be Weegee as seen in drawings of him from M&L:SS, which many of you should remember. The third and final will be my current Captain Falcon avatar.

Re: Streets of Rage 2

Clayfrd

I thought I commented on this. Anyway, it took me until I played with a friend to see how awesome this was. It comes highly recommended if you have a buddy to play with you. So much fun.

Re: MadStone Savant Challenge Contest

Clayfrd

Wow. It would be cool if CAPCOM (sorry, I like to spell the name in all caps) did something like this with Mega Man 9. The article could go as follows:
"Hey, if you're one of the first 20 to beat MM9 on Superhero mode, we'll give you 2000 Wii Points since it was lame of us to charge you for an extra difficulty anyway!"
I actually have been considering getting this. Too bad I only have 300 points. On another note, I got a new 1 gig SD card to add to my 512 mb one. The 512 ran out, so I had to get a new one. Hooray for horrible memory formats!

Oh, and I have a question... I just got Metroid Prime (a little late, huh?), and I popped it in my Wii, but it's acting stupid. The disc has few blemishes, but I've only played about 30 minutes and the game has already encountered an error with reading a cutscene. Does anyone know if there's a reason for this? My Wii was manufactured for/shortly after launch (got it on eBay), and it seems to have a bit of trouble with GCN games (sometimes encounter Disk read errors) and VC games (they'll run, but sometimes they take a minute to turn on). Would it be better to just play my GameCube games on my Cube; that is, is it more tolerant of minor blemishes?

@Ren - N says that North America will be getting Club Nintendo before the end of the year.

Re: Boom Tapper Coming To Japanese WiiWare

Clayfrd

@Starwolf_UK- What it comes down to is the fact that N has warned you through countless mediums that mods can void dozens of warranties and that mods can cause irreparable damage to your console. You really don't have the right to be mad at anyone but yourself because you have been warned. I would probably be mad, too, but you have to realize, at the end of the day, that it was your fault.

Re: JoJu Games Interview: Mart Racer

Clayfrd

@ttplayer92- I've heard (somewhere) that the main reason that games like MKW are so good and lag-free online is that the game doesn't require the pixel perfect position of every character to function. For this reason, you may see a player in MK run right off the track before appearing in front of you seconds later. Since your system doesn't always need to know where every player is, the game doesn't stop you if it doesn't. In games like Brawl, conversely, you always need to know exactly where everyone is so every hit connects that should.

Re: Review: Tetris Party (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

Has anyone else tried Balance Tetris? I actually enjoy it (I thought it might be tougher than it is), and I just cleared Marathon on easy. I'm finally using my BB effectively.

Re: Review: World of Goo (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

@AlexSays - No disrespect intended, it was just the first 3rd party minigame collection I could think of. I'm sure it is fun, and I really didn't mean to offend you. I'll edit out the "sorry." Sorry.

Re: Review: Tetris Party (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

I'm surprised with this. Usually I'm not hooked on a Tetris title, but this version has me quite addicted. I think the greater diversity of the different modes (i.e. not just line clearing games with a twist) makes it more enjoyable. I enjoy the balance versions, too.

Yay! I'm in the top 30 on the Advanced J Track on Stage Racer. I'm currently 22nd.
EDIT
I'm also #9 on "Stage Racer Route Z (Advanced)," making me the only US player in the Top 10 in that category. I hope I can maintain that spot for at least a little while!

Re: Review: World of Goo (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

@Satan's Therapist - You have a point. Great games like No More Heroes have received far fewer purchases in the retail market than other lesser game. If every person who bought Carnival Games bought the far better NMH instead, the Wii (and Ninty in general) demographic might slowly start to lean back to hardcore.

Re: Review: Mega Man 9 (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

@pikmin95 - Thanks for letting me know. Oh, and are you the guy that used to have Olimar picking a blue pikmin as your avatar?

@all- I downloaded Fake Man, but I would also like anyone's input on Hero/Superhero modes.

Re: EU VC Releases: Mayhem in Monsterland and More

Clayfrd

@Will- Actually I don't know why I called this dull. I was mainly referring to SFII, but after looking back at the article, this is definitely not bad. While I didn't have a C64, I generally assume that if VCR says it's good, then it probably had a good fanbase, and I'll judge a week according to the majority's opinion on the games. I'm really not sure why I called the week dull. I think I had just read another article or something. Weird.

Re: Virtual Console games to be directly downloadable to SD cards

Clayfrd

@Manicfatty - I understand your complaints. I, however, have only been victim of hacks maybe once, and I still got second. Furthermore, I try not to complain about things that can't really be changed, even in the next game. Hacking is tough to avoid. I don't mind people that leave when they lose because they are usually replaced. I understand your complaints (especially about friend codes, but excepting the d-pad complaint), and it really makes me mad when people hack Time Trial leaderboards, but I usually just compete with the best real time. Your complaints are legitimate and I agree with most of them, but I just hate to see a Ninty game get so flamed. I'll have to admit that many Nintendo games do deserve complaining, especially more recent titles. The only games that I cannot complain about are SMG and LoZ (excluding VC/WiiWare). Even Brawl, which I've logged countless hours on, has its problems. I do think Melee's more broken, though. Anyway, in short, I agree with you (except I find MKW genuinly enjoyable, just annoying), I just really don't want to.

Re: Review: The Incredible Maze (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

I was one of those people that was thinking, "C'mon, give it a chance," but since this review, any lingering doubt has been vanquished. I will not be squandering my points on this garbage.

Re: World of Goo

Clayfrd

@jeffo- I think it's exactly the opposite. I think Toki Tori and WoG are about equally as good, but I think WoG is slightly more charming, and I think TT has slightly (very slightly) stronger gameplay. Actually, TT does have those awesome WiiConnect24 messages. I don't know, they're both pretty charming. Both games are basically equal to me, though. I need to move TT off my SD card and work on some of the hard levels.

Re: World of Goo is Officially the Best Wii Game Ever

Clayfrd

@Omega- Definitely. You can SMB 1-3, and The Legend of Zelda for the price of 1 Wii points card, and those games can last you a LONG time. That's just naming a few games too. I understand that a lot of people have invested a lot of time into those games, but it's even easy to save on new games. You can save at least a little by buying used and/or on ebay. Keeping up with change is also a great way to get games. I came up with around $16 (appx. 12 euros) in quarters a few months ago by saving all of my quarters. I'm a bit frugal yes, but it makes keeping up with games a bit easier for someone without an income (so does being a Nintendo fan, sigh).

Re: Mega Man 9

Clayfrd

@Nath17- It'd be SMB5 (at least in Japan) because SMW was SMB4 in Japan. Still, it's a great idea.

@Cally- My God! You're devoted! I'm proud of my measly 36%! I was thinking of doing your method for Mr. Perfect, but I've got a lot of practicing to do.

Re: USA WiiWare Update: Tetris Party & The Incredible Maze

Clayfrd

@Versus22 (regarding size) - Ugh. I just made room for WoG and Dynamite Headdy (which for some reason won't download unless you have way more space on your Wii at the time of download than you need... it's happened before, does anyone know why?). How am I going to put this on my Wii without sending at least 1 game I haven't beaten to die on my SD Card? DAMN YOU STORAGE!

Re: Virtual Console games to be directly downloadable to SD cards

Clayfrd

@Manicfatty - I personally love MKW, but I agree that it has its flaws. Its saving grace is the Nintendo WFC gameplay, where forced teams is more acceptable. Also, the D-Pad does tricks and wheelies on the GCN controller. The races are great excepting items. I hate how poorly balanced they are. I've been POWed, lighting struck, and Blue Shelled all in a row in less than 5 seconds. Yes, there is a way to avoid POWs (sort of), but there should be balance. I don't care about AI because I have online, but whenever my internet craps out, I usually don't look to MKW first because the AI is pretty easy (albeit cheap). I have to say that (especially online) if you are the better racer, you will usually win. If you get hit by a shell and drop several places, just grab an item, and it will likely be a Bullet Bill. I know I'm proving your point, but whenever I'm online, usually the same group holds the top 4 or 5 spots every race. I will say that I dropped almost 300 points in rank online the other day because I got attacked on the home stretch 3 races in a row, usually making me 7th or below. Either way, cheap as it is, I love MKW.
Also, I am a Nintendo fanboy, but I'm not afraid to lash out at Nintendo. What would be a more appropriate title? Nintendo Devotee?

Sorry, that first paragraph was a poorly constructed paragraph, but I was filtering the best comments I could argue into words from about 3000 flowing through my mind. The comments just didn't flow well.

On topic, I still hate this solution.

Re: Treasure: Buy Dynamite Headdy, You Fools

Clayfrd

@Manicfatty- I would join you in your protest to not buy VC/WiiWare until a real solution is presented, but I don't have that kind of self control. WoG is too good!

Oh, and I got Dynamite Headdy yesterday with some residual points from my WoG purchase. It's really good. Am I alone, or does it remind anyone else of Ristar? Anyway, I hope others decide to support it too.

Re: Review: Mega Man 9 (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

@Cally- The alternate weapons are definitely used regularly in the game. Something I haven't seen quite as much in the other MM games I've played (1-3). Having beaten 1,2, and 9, I plan to go back to the rest and beat them. There's just nothing I dislike about classic Mega Man.

Has anyone tested the glitch I reported in comment 134?

Re: Review: Art Style: Orbient (WiiWare)

Clayfrd

@Jockolantern - WoG is two buttons...
Still you described this game quite well. It's just so much fun. It has it's frustrating parts, but the pure simplicity makes it a joy to play. It's the kind of game you want to play alone in perfect silence.

Re: World of Goo is Officially the Best Wii Game Ever

Clayfrd

@Objection_Blaster/AlexSays - Video games have been my long time hobby, and I have a small wallet. The difference is, I'm into classic games, which tend to be cheaper, and I can make a game last a long time. Even without any income, I always seem to have the money to get any game I really want. I'm not sure why, it just seems to happen. I guess I'm a lucky guy.

@AlexSays - Good job. I beat it two weeks ago, and it's quite a feeling to beat that game. It took me 9 E-Tanks and 1 M-Tank to beat Wily's Castle, but I'm still proud .
