Earlier today, Nintendo released its N64 classic Mario Golf on the Switch Online Expansion Pack service.
If you are curious to see how the game looks, and don't happen to have access to the Switch's higher-tier subscription, you've come to the right place. Nintendo's Japanese website has released some additional screenshots of the game, so we've shared them here.
GameXplain has also released a comparison video - showing what this latest version of Mario Golf looks like compared to the Wii U and original N64 release. Enjoy!

To me it still looks as beautiful as it did when it first came out. I really love the blocky models of the Nintendo 64 era.
Polygons ❤️❤️❤️
These screens alone give me such a good feeling
Finally a good Mario Golf game on Switch
Who says Blockbuster is dead?
A blocky nostalgia masterpiece
That music is way too good for a golf game.
I hate that the comparison video has one side slightly later than the other one
@Jackpaza0508 I’m not sure that’s the video’s fault, I think it highlights the inaccuracy of Nintendo’s N64 emulation.
In the end credits to Mario Kart 64 on NSO, Mario says “Hey, you’re very good, see you next time!” before the music has finished playing and the end credits to Ocarina go out of sync too. Its because the emulator isn’t fully timing accurate and so things with a specific timing will go out of sync.
i'd be eternally grateful if somebody familiar with the N64 game can play this and report back on latency? the Wii VC version of this game had bad input lag and that ruined the 3 click for me...
I hope this version is OK, would love to play this again, and with polished up graphics too!
Low poly wario is awesome
All I need now are Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games and the 3DS/Wii U eShop closure will sting less.
@RadioShadow Seriously, the music was my biggest disappointment with Super Rush, because the N64 music was so damn good.
Just wish they would release more n64 controllers really struggle to play orcarina of time with the pro controller
But hopefully this golf should be too bad
The N64, Gamecube, and 3DS versions of Mario Golf had WAY more Mushroom Kingdom charm... I like the Switch version for its simplified mechanics, but the courses, environments, music, etc are woefully uninspired.
This is the one that broke me, dammit! I was holding out on the service (which was easy) and then this… crap. I’m folding. Ya got me Nintendo. I’ll be damned if I’m not playing this after work today. I miss the music in the game that much. Gotta do it
It's weird to me how the bad geometry is forgivable on the N64, but not the Switch... Clarity makes you want more, I guess?
It always amazes Some people will worry about every aspect of the game - and claim this makes it unplayable or that - but it’s never the most important thing - is it fun to play.
I just want to beat Luigi.
For what it's worth, my brothers and friend tried to do four player online, all of us hardwired, and it was a laggy mess. You had to press 3/4 into the power bar to even have a chance at a perfect shot. It was so bad we only made it through 9 holes. It does look fantastic though...
There should also be an input lag comparison. NSO unfortunately has about the same input lag (offline, to clarify) as the Wii VC version. It's really noticeable when trying to get perfect power swings. In handheld mode, changing the impact point with precision is a lot tougher than it should be because of the joycon sticks.
It's interesting that Switch and Wii U stay in sync, it goes to show that even though the emulation is different (presumably because the developers are different) the practices are still the same.
Or maybe efficient N64 emulation is janky and this will always be the result. But it really seems to be that Nintendo wants the games to feel slightly enhanced, otherwise they'd keep the original resolution.
N64 on the right CRT at the right distance looks much much better, more clean, vibrant and less pixelated than those N64 images.
@Chrysologus Totally, each to their own & I can appreciate that. You might love the deblur mode of the ultraHDMI - perfect sharp N64 pixels similar to the PS1.
