Update [Fri 15th Apr, 2022 02:10 BST]: Mario Golf has now been made available to Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers. You'll be able to access it via the Nintendo 64 games library, once you've updated the N64 app to version 2.2.0.
Original article [Thu 7th Apr, 2022 02:25 BST]: Nintendo recently uploaded an updated version of its Switch Online trailer featuring a number of upcoming N64 titles for the Expansion Pack service. One of them was the 1999 N64 title Mario Golf.
This particular game has now officially locked in a release date on the paid subscription service and is scheduled to arrive next week on 15th April. Here's the official announcement from Twitter:
It follows on from the release of F-Zero X on the N64 Expansion Pack service last month. A few other games expected to arrive in the near future include Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Pokémon Snap.
Will you be revisiting Mario Golf's N64 outing when it arrives on Switch next week? Tell us in the comments.

Look forward to this . I'd say there will be alot of people playing it ⛳
I'm sad that I still don’t get Kirby
Wow they are really pumping these out. Guess that 2nd office facility they built is in high gear.
I'm looking forward to this too. I never played it back in the day.
Nice! Seems like the N64 games are coming out at a decent clip.
Never played this fully, but I do remember it had mini golf, that's probably the only reason I'm playing.
Not counting Mario Kart Tour and Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light, I think this is the only Mario game where you need to unlock Mario himself.
It’s crazy how the new Mario Golf is still not dramatically better than this game. Mario Golf 64 is such a classic and one of the best golf games ever made imo.
@TonyTyga90 I'm curious to see if it remains consistent after they release all the games that were already pre-announced but not at launch.
Good job Nintendo seems like the N64 lineup is finally picking up. Now give us all the Rare, Konami, and Capcom games.
Still have it complete in mint condition along with every other N64 game ever released.
Glad others get to enjoy it.
Good to see Nintendo start pushing them out, still glad I don't have to wait for them though.
I have the Mario Golf announcement open on my Switch NSO app right now - it says the game is rated “T” for Teen due to BLOOD AND VIOLENCE. Huh??
Not what I expected from a-Mario…
Yes!!! I've been looking forward to this one so much, you have no idea lol. Still play it on N64, and can't wait to play it online (hopefully lag isn't bad). It's so much better than Mario Golf Super Rush and my personal favorite Mario Golf.
Also, if has one of the, if not the most underappreciated soundtrack of any Nintendo game. It's so lovely.
Haven't played it since a rental back in the day, but I had a blast then - hopefully it holds up. Though I'm still heavily occupied with the recent Genesis additions tbh.
Um... I hear this a game you won't be able to completely see its contents because it required playing the GBC counterpart and using the Transfer Pak to unlock stuff.
Though I can't forget Mario violating the warranty on his GBC by smacking it around in the commercial. "Ooops! Game Boy fall down!"
Nice! Was kinda hoping for Kirby 64 next, but this is cool. I've actually been so hyped with Forgotten Land, I went back and bought Kirby Fighters 2. (Fun game, but way harder than it has any right to be. I'd venture to say the CPU's are straight up unfair. Probably the most I've ever raged playing a game.) So yeah, I could probably use a little Kirby break. I never owned this game on N64, but I loved Toadstool Tour. This one already looks better than Super Rush just from the 2-minute trailer, lol. Will be a fun one to play with my dad and brother.
I don't know what rights issues are involved in releasing third-party games, but I have one thing to say: Ogre Battle 64. Give us it.
@Teksetter I don't think that's talking about Mario Golf specifically. I think it's NSO in general. I'm not sure if it's everything or just the expansion pack but you get the idea.
YES!!! Super Rush was a fine game but the other titles were much more fun imo. I’m stoked to play some classic Mario Golf on my Switch next week!!!
I only rented this game once back in the day, but I most remember the mini golf mode. I don't know how much that part has held up or the game in general (though from what I've played, Mario Tennis is EXACTLY as good as I remember it, so that's a good sign), but I hope its still good.
One of my most played games back then. I'll be sure to play it now when it releases - hopefully the joy con analog stick will do the trick as you require some precision to aim the shot.
@ChameleonBros Agreed. I’ve loved all the Mario Golf titles except for Super Rush. It wasn’t a bad game by any means but given the past entries in the series it was a disappoint to me. The game just felt less polished, was missing series-staple modes from previous entries, and for some reason they thought modifying the controls and mechanics was a good idea but imo it just made it worse in every way. I do like the added courses and charterers, though.
Regardless, I’m happy to finally have classic Mario Golf action on my Switch!
One of the better games on the n64! I don't have the service, but happy people can check the game out who haven't yet.
Never played Mario Mario Golf on the N64, I started with the GameCube game. Looking forward to see how this is.
It's a Sonny day!
@DeathByLasagna Pretty much exactly how I feel. I actually really liked the additions of Chargin' Chuck, King Bob-omb, and Ninji, and a few of the new courses were cool. But the weird changes to the swing mechanics, ball simulation/viewer (I'm not sure what that grid is called), and projected trajectory just really disappointed me, plus no Ring Shot, mini-golf, and just the overall lack of attention to detail. Can't wait to play MG64 as well though!
@BispoSnake You could use the N64 dpad in the original game to aim, so I'd optimistically expect that to be the case here too. Although changing the impact point is much easier with analog stick, the d-pad really helped with fine tuning the general aim left and right. Unless you meant joy con drift this whole time lol.
@KingMike It's actually pretty much like that on the original cart too. The GBC characters are imported from the GBC Mario Golf and only exist on the cart while you have the console turned on. Their stats and everything is solely based off your version of the GBC game so there isn't actually anything missing in a weird way.
It's a real pain to have the slots on the character select screen though. Would've been cool (but unrealistic of course) if they gave them some stats and added them in for this.
No Kirby on Kirby month!? Wow. Really was thinking it was gonna be Kirby64. Oh well!
Hopefully this will introduce more people to plum since she’s a pretty good beginner character from what I heard.
@Teksetter That's the rating for the program in general. That's why others like the Mini NES, Mini SNES and the other NSO apps have higher ratings.
Imagine if stores respected the ratings, kids couldn't have bought an SNES Mini since the console is rated T thanks to EarthBound.
Please add CRT filters like you have on the NES and SNES games, Nintendo! This console was also out at a time when everyone was using CRT TVs. Please give us the option! It's how I play my emulated games and you need to keep up if you want people to be paying.
yesssssssssss
@Kirby_Girl it could be the final game we get out of these 3 because forgotten land came out last month. Idk tho, im no fortune teller.
Give me Wave Race 64 you cowards!
At last a decent Mario Golf game on Switch
I prefer the GameCube entry,
but look forward to playing this again.
This game was so much fun, spent months getting most of the unlockables with my family! ❤️
Unless the first few comments are sarcasm - you know nintendo has done a brilliant PR job when 1 a month is seen as “pumping them out” it’s the absolute bare minimum in my eyes
Give me Diddy Kong racing you cowards!
Kirby 64 would've been a better fit for this month.
I was confused as to whether I was watching a Mario Golf trailer when the first 30 seconds were just generic humans. I guess that's just how it was in the original game?
Regardless, I'm incredibly excited for this. The Mario spin-offs on NSO (MK64, Tennis, Dr Mario, etc.) have always held my interest for a long time and I expect this one to be no different, especially with how much I like golfing games (I was literally playing NES Open last night for goodness sake).
I love this game. It’s so much better than super rush. But it just calls to mind the epic fail the NSO + is. Why did they include Genesis games? Why not GBA, GB, GC, or something else? Sigh.
@DeathByLasagna seems to be nintendo's theme with mario spin offs as of late (mainly tennis and golf, obviously, but mario party hasn't come out unscathed either), has me worried about strikers
@TonyTyga90 Their second office building isn't finished yet.
Nice shot!
The N64 version of Mario Golf is fine, but the GameCube version is much better.
@arnoldfranklin @HammerGalladeBro
Thank you both for the replies! I should have guessed the T rating was for the N64 or NSO service in general - that makes perfect sense given the shooters and beat em ups in the collection.
Still, it looked odd to me as the whole ad is focused on the one game. And golf can bring out the worst in some people! 😬
AT LAST! I love this game, played it so much on the N64.
However, when i got it for Wii via the VC, there was noticeable input lag, which utterly killed it for me. Made the 3 click mechanic awful, and as an N64 golf veteran, unplayable. Fingers crossed this version is lag free.
Can somebody please post when they get this, as this is the game that'll make me take the expansion pass plunge!!
Hold the front door. MINI GOLF?
Was this Japanese only? I don't remember having this on my N64 cart?????
@Not_Soos ah, i just the king dedede drum game (3ds) for the same reason
Quite happy with mario golf though ... never played this version before...
@TonyTyga90 Then these N64 releases will slow down after Nintendo runs out of most of the titles that they own and are easy to port.
When they reach games that they can't rerelease thanks to copyright reasons or thanks to emulation reasons like Pokémon Stadium, that requires a peripheral, soon these releases will slow down, even though there are still many N64 games missing, or they will just start giving us N64 games no one asked and no one cared even around 1996-2002.
@Dimey It definitely wasn't Japanese only. Mini Golf was one of my favorite modes in this game as a kid.
Well timed with the Masters golf tournament starting this week.
just checked and there is a photo of mini golf on the back of the flipping box! idiot. haha
@mjharper just turned it on! love it
I'm sold on the expansion pak now, I've always wanted to play Mario Golf.
I was absolutely addicted to Mario Golf on the N64 (the GBC game that also released close to this) back in the day. Can't wait to play this again with the n64 nso controller. I also played it on the Wii Virtual Console but I think playing it once again with the N64 controller (minus the weight of the Expansion Pak) will be 1000x better!
This was the only video game my dad would ever play. We used to play skin games with him for 25 cents a hole.
I love mario golf and the switch and cannot wait to get it on the online service.
I’ll pay for the service once they get Smash Bros w/ online support and it works well.
@Kirby_Girl to be honest I thought that they would release Kirby 64 in March since forgotten Land was released on that month.
I might give it a try. Though I still need to play Toadstool Tour.
@Teksetter Super Mario Odyssey 2 will be rated M for Mario.
@Zeeeus
Especially if he goes bare-chested again! 😳
More topically, it’s nice to read people’s fond memories of Mario Golf, though I’ve never tried it. I’m glad it’s on the service in case I want to play it someday.
I’m showing my age here, but NES GOLF was where I played most, and then I was pretty much done with the genre. ⛳️
...Why does the trailer say that it's rated T for teens? The box art shows E for everyone.
What do you prefer?
Mario Golf 64 or Mario Golf Swich?
@Teksetter do you mean NES Open? The one with Mario on the cartridge? If so, I am right there with you.
@StarPoint It means the NSO app in general.
Miss the days of Nintendo making a good golf game to start with then adding the characters Instead of just focusing on a gimmick
Most N64 games haven’t aged that well.
@TKundNobody maybe cus kirby is on nes and snes
and the new one kirby and the forgotten lands but still sucks
its poor of nintendo only give 1 game at the time
Best golf game ever, they nailed the controls, it has better zoom function than the switch version.
@sisodinr
No, it was just the generic GOLF game with a random golfer dude on the cover, no Mario. It was a very early “black box” NES release, like VOLLEYBALL, MARIO BROS, EXCITEBIKE, etc. Simpler times…! 😁
Can the opinion on the expansion pack change? I'm very happy with the NSO and always have been.
@WeLiveInASociety ohh I see. Thanks
@HammerGalladeBro Do any of the other Mario Golf games have Minigolf?
@LinktotheFuture I think they don't as far as I remember.
Nintendo need to stop worrying about putting one new game at a time on the switch online service, and dedicate all the budget for it to production of more new N64 controllers for switch. I couldn't buy one the first time because I only got paid the next day, and by then it'd already sold out. And that was 6 months ago, with no updates, no way to buy the controllers.
