Well, it's here, the Super Mario Maker update is live. A teaser for a new Totem Link Mystery Mushroom item gave an early idea of some of the extras included, and now your copy of the game should automatically update when you start it up.
Key new features include the ability to add checkpoints to levels, which had been much in demand, and you can now 'stack' items in blocks. For example a mushroom and fire flower can be set and issued depending on whether the Mario in question is large or small when activating the block.
More exciting additions have arrived through 'Official Makers' and Event Courses, both found in the Course World section of the game. Below is a breakdown of the content in each so far.
Event Courses - some include unlockable Mystery Mushroom items
- Tri Force Heroes
- Arino Maker
- Arino Maker Returns
- New! Arino Maker
- Super Bakarhythm Land
- Ship Love
Official Maker listings - some containing multiple levels
- Mashiko
- Yamamura
- Undodog
- Bowser
- Coursebot
- Mr. Eraser
- Budgie
- Soundfrog
It's worth jumping in and checking out this content, and as a bonus below are two videos recently uploaded by the Japanese Nintendo YouTube channel, along with the original announcement trailer outlining the key features.
So, what do you think of the update?

yay i wonder if they will add more ways to unlock mystery mushroom costumes.
Sad that there is only two outfits, anyways I beaten all the event levels.

It's a neat update, but I'm feeling really conflicted on whether I want to re-upload my levels...
@MasterWario Why not make them bigger and better?
I have a few that will add a check point too and re-upload. Im very happy!
They removed the invisable block glitch. Makes sense why but I felt sad deleting the two courses I uploaded with it. I don't want to be a jerk and have impossible levels online.
(Note- my invisable blocks were basically going through a pipe and landing on some right above spikes.)
I can't play this game, MH4U is preventing me....lol
I think I figured out their Easter Egg while editing.
Try tapping on a Door--once, a few times, or a lot. You might get a surprise or two if you keep at it.
P.S. I swear I figured this out on my own.
I'd like a desert zone update or the ability to apply costumes to enemies or an npc.
Update worked for me. Of course I can't use Checkpoint yet b/c I haven't unlocked the flag, I enjoy playing lev els more than making them.
@SirQuincealot Because bigger is not always better! A good number of my levels are near perfect (as far as I can see through my tinted glasses), so why would I need to change it too much?
Although after tinkering around a bit, I realize adding scaling power-ups and checkpoints instantly make any level easier, so maybe I'll just keep them the way they are.
@SirQuincealot a good example why bigger is not always better
water grave, water torture, water hazard, water myth are a set in that order here is myth the last of the four.

proof of bigger not being better.
Hard gnat mode unlocks a fly costume from the old mario brothers game.
Sweet update indeed. I plan to re-upload 2 of my levels to make them more accesible and I'm finishing a new one. Thanks Nintendo!

@MasterWario: I like your new version of Giant Garden, I think it's better with checkpoints. Btw, the level I'm working on right now uses the same elements as Gutter Castle! I was surprised how similar they are.
I just updated this, I thought europe was getting the update tomorrow. Anyway, I'll have to check it properly later as I'm busy today. ß(
Now I just have to decide whether to keep my current levels, or reupload them. I think I'll keep them for now in order to keep the info about who has beaten them and their pass rates.
Is it possible to add more than one checkpoint?
@CB85 Only 1 in each area.
Well, it's confirmed. Nintendo has removed the "walk on spikes" glitch exploit, as well as any stages that used it!
@MasterWario "Invisible Block" glitch? I am not familiar. Is it related to the Invincibility with spikes glitch? Did Nintendo delete your levels or did you do it manually? Nintendo deleted the stage I uploaded that used the "Walk on Spikes" glitch. Sad...
Here's the updated version with Invincibility Stars:

@dadajo If you use this in the first place then you probably already were already being a jerk—unless you added them in a really fair and obvious way. You might just be unable to tell the difference between being a jerk but thinking you aren't and being a jerk who knows you are.
I am not reuploading any of my levels. None of them is that hard anyway.
Question: can levels be longer now that we have checkpoints?
@MasterWario @crimsontadpoles @StarDust4Ever @Kirk @sinalefa Would a couple of people do me a quick favour and play this level: 41EF-0000-0027-743F with the purpose of rating the difficulty?
I'd just like an idea if the completion rate is a reflection of the actual difficulty. This is one I intend to tweak and stick a checkpoint in. Just want to know if needs toning down a bit and it should give me the right sort of idea on how to approach my other levels. Thanks guys
So every single uploaded levels on the servers are removed when there's an update??
@Kirk If I used the glitch to make the level hard or for a player who does not know not be able to beat it yes I would be a jerk but I didn't do that. I basically created a horror themed level for Halloween and when a person went through the pipe they came out on the other side right above spikes. The invisable blocks stopped them right before they hit the spikes. They were impossible to avoid (as in impossbile not to land on the invisable blcoks) and I actually got some nice comments from people saying it was a clever way to use the glitch that did not at all hurt the player for not knowing. After the spikes ended, it transitioned naturally to the next part of the level. It was impossible for a player to die or get stuck and the whole section lasted for three seconds so I would not consider that a jerk move. Obviously when the update came out if a person played the level they now could not beat it so I deleted the level from the servers and reuploaded it with that area fixed.
I am happy they fixed the glitch since more than likley more harm than good came from it. It was more sad to see my levels not be playable but I already fixed them and reuploaded.
@Smokingspoon I don't think so.
One of my levels got taken off the server though.
@dadajo Then I apologise to you, Sir, because it sounds like you were one of the few people who didn't do something d*ckish with stuff like this. Kudos.
Did the game explain which item you had to shake to make checkpoints or did I just miss that? I had to look it up from Youtube to find it out.
@StarDust4Ever Oh no they're still up. I just don't want to re-upload them because it'll get rid of all the nice comments everyone gave and I don't want too many multiple versions of my level floating around...it has bad taste.
@Freeon-Leon Ha ha, well I look forward to playing it! Grinders + tracks make for some really interesting courses!
@Luffymcduck it definitely doesn't explain in game...it's weird that they don't.
