Following their recent Super Mario Maker session with the one and only Charles Martinet, our chums at Nintendo UK are doing another Twitch broadcast today for viewers eager to see more on this excellent game. This time the guest appearance will be from none other than Nintendo Life's video presenter extraordinaire Alex Olney.
Alex will be showing off his favourite Super Mario Maker levels which have been created by the Nintendo Life community. We asked you last week to submit levels for us to showcase and we got lots of fantastic entries. Alex has waded through them to pick what he considers to be the cream of the crop. So if you submitted a level, be sure to tune in later today to see if your creation gets featured in the stream.
The Nintendo UK Super Mario Maker Twitch stream begins at 5pm UK time on Thursday 17th September. Be there or be square. Tune in here: http://www.twitch.tv/nintendouk

Aw, too bad I didn't spot the submission topic in time. It would've been fun to watch Alex try to beat my wall jumping level on stream.
I submitted a level with the NUK tag 2 days ago but don't think it got tried out =(
Same here @CapnKatz :C
I submitted 3 on the day it was announced with the tag, but got buried I think.
Still looking forward to this though, going to tune in and see what interesting levels Alex found :3
@Yai Yeah similar story here, I got one in the day after, I don't think anyone's played it on here haha. How about we have an 'I rate yours, you rate mine' on this thread (obv for levels with the tag)?
Mine's 41EF-0000-0027-743F
I'll have to watch this when it's uploaded, won't get home in time for it!
Hope they share the codes for the levels played on the stream.
Will the stream be archived on youtube when it's done?
Oops, bad time math, 12, not 1. Sorry I missed Alex.
@CTMike Beat it! Really liked the different pathways and how every part felt different yet still part of the same level. Only managed to find yoshi though (and creepy skinny Mario) =$
Here's the one I submitted if you want to give it a go:
359C-0000-0033-FEA0
It's a ghost house with a fair amount of options
The Darude Sandstorm level ID is 27D7-0000-003B-DE8D if anyone missed it or wants to hear it again.
@Yai Same, I even commented, but no try
Watching the levels were cool though. Haven't seen about the Race with Koopa the Quick, only heard about it
@CapnKatz ridiculous level of design complexity. Thoroughly enjoying it. Still working out the best route though haha. Not quite beat it yet!
Oh and just for the record, we use my wife's NNID for our Wii U (just incase you wondered why my name and gender differ wildly haha.
Edit: beat it in the end, it was great.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Nice asthetic. Fast paced, lots of fun! Good use of big Mario, too.
Why can't the expert levels on 100 Mario have the same level of thought as the NL ones?!
Here are my two levels that were played in the stream:
Floatdown Mario
6BE1-0000-0020-59B0
Bowser's Bob-omb Factory
B9AA-0000-0033-20F9
I'm so annoyed that I didn't have a Twitch account so I couldn't post the codes in the chat during the stream!
This stream is getting archived on Youtube right? Because some of us were at work when it aired.
Anyways here were mine:
9477-0000-001C-64B7
0DCC-0000-0034-D802
28EA-0000-003A-3402
And here I was thinking the stream was starting soon. I forgot about time zones. Oh well. My level still doesn't have a like so I'm assuming it didn't get played.
Could someone tell me if i need an account to download maps from the course world?
@CTMike So many clever moments! I found the blue Yoshi
@CapnKatz Whoah! I had to finally just pick a route and keep chipping away until I got to the epic "secret staircase." Well done!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Launching Luigi was hilarious! Really fun, zany level!
So, guys, I'd like to get in on your sharing levels. I literally have zero personal friends who play this game, so I'm digging how yall started a little group here in this thread.
I'm going to play through all of your levels, because let's face it: they are awesome (for real)! You'll see me commenting and handing out stars left and right. I hope you'll be able to enjoy some of my levels too!
Although compared to what I just played, mine seem rather simplistic, I'll start yall off with one that has a little bite to it: the Castle of Secrets!
2904-0000-0028-FB75
Thanks! BTW, if you get around to the Ninja Warrior level, be sure comments are on
@FLUX_CAPACITOR my fiancée has hijacked my Wii U too! I have to wait until she ready to fall asleep before she hands over the GamePad haha. Then I'm up till about 2am. It's been fun though
Ugh, betas everywhere
I miss the days when men were men and could actually stand up for themselves rather than just roll over and "laugh it off".
@rcerboss2 when? The 1950s? Jeez haha
@TheWindWaker played your level pal, loved it. Starred and commented!
@rcerboss2 played the 3 levels you posted. Good fun, particularly enjoyed the Wii Fit Trainer one
@CapnKatz @TheWindWaker @FLUX_CAPACITOR
Tried my hand at a ghost house, see what you guys rek...
2B5E-0000-004C-75BD
@FLUX_CAPACITOR haha yeah, like I said earlier, on our Wii U we use my wife's NNID rather than mine or my son's
But yeah, I am a dude and my wife gets all the credit for my levels!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR haha you're making it sound weird! But yeah, cheers.
In fairness Bowser Ate My Castle and Bowser Tag are actually my son's levels, Bowser Jr level is a joint effort between me and my wife and the rest are mine.
I'm keeping an eye out for everyone's level on here. The NL MM section is cool but it's suffering from flooding, more so than I thought it would
@CTMike Got the notification about your comment just today for some reason. I did a quick glance at your ghost house and another one, but I will have to play through them completely this evening!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR I actually read CTMike's earlier comment to you about his Mii so I was well prepared! I'll check your profile for any new ones this evening as well!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Yeah, I played through that Zelda level and was very impressed! As I mentioned in my in-game comment, I loved how you had the thwomp block the final room's door - in a true Zelda fashion! That room was the death of me a couple of times before I finally stayed calm and took care of business! I really liked the design of the castle as well, and how the pathways twisted within one another. Very nice! I only have 4 courses uploaded now, but I am working on finishing a "desert" level. Mine are not very complex, but perhaps one day I will create a masterpiece!
@CTMike That ghost house was on point! For some reason I find that glitch effect to be truly creepy, and I loved your usage of it! That hidden propeller suit was the only thing that got me to the goal, because my jump would have come up short with all those falling platforms! The earthquake there was an epic finish!
@TheWindWaker Thanks! I put a lot of thought into the layout of that one. Thought my first couple of levels were a bit too difficult so I've tried to tone it down a bit.
A couple of my newest ones are complete gimmick stages, not sure how they will go down. One is a take on basketball, the other a Yoshi feeding high score run.
I'm thinking of doing a take on a Sonic level next but might be a little ambitious...
@CTMike Yes, I had already played through your "gimmick" stages and found them to be quite fun! Almost like mini-games. Your levels are very clever, and I like how you use objects in interesting/ unconventional ways!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR I feel like I've actually gotten sucked in to playing other peoples levels at the expense of my own. I have a few of you guys I check in on and if there's a new one, I play it right away!
What would be really interesting would be to see how one's level design reflects their skill at smash bros
@FLUX_CAPACITOR It's all good, man! I was wanting to do a smash themed level as well. Like maybe the challenger's journey to the battlefield or something. I'm sure you'll come up with something cool! I'm going to check out all your new ones right now!
Well, Flux and @CTMike , I finally cranked out another one of my own. They are slow coming, but this one's kinda cool. It's Toad's Story.
5B14-0000-0089-281C or you could find it on my profile.
Yall have lots of stars! Keep up the great work!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR @CTMike
Update: The new code is 5EDE-0000-0089-4314
Just had a few changes to make
@TheWindWaker Oh wow! Think that may be your best yet. Loved what you did with that mountainy/tunnel section. Really impressive sense of scale to it once you're inside too. Awesome level. I like the little back story stuff too, keep up the good work!
I'm not quite sure what to do with my next level. Me and my son are putting one up in the next few days which we're halfway through but after that I only have 1 upload slot left so I need to make it a good one!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Expert is awful. The best levels either need to be searched for or found on Normal difficulty. I find 100 Mario on Normal to be generally 50/50. At the very least the levels tend to be thought out. I tend to give a star if the effort's there and it's at least moderately fun.
What's also irritating is how very few people seem to bother giving any stars out at all. Sometimes I check the profiles of people who have beat my levels and have a look at their levels but what I realised is; you can check which levels said person has starred. The amount of people I've seen with about 2-3 stars given out max is astonishing, and they always seem to be for those damn auto-levels!
Annnnnyways, your Forest level is really cool, definitely hit that throwback to Forest of Illusion feel you were after. It was kinda trippy and you really nailed the aesthetic!
@CTMike @FLUX_CAPACITOR Thanks, guys! I'm glad you like it! I feel like I haven't mastered using the given toolset in tricky and clever ways like you guys have, but I do feel good about creating environments, so I try to stick with what I know.
You should feel good about how many stars you have! I only have half as many as you guys! The psychology of star-giving... surely some fascinating conclusions could be drawn. I like to stick to a few makers that I am familiar with, such as you two, and make it my mission to complete every course. In the original Mario games there was such motivation to clear a course, even if it was hard. But now that incentive is gone, even in 100 Mario, so I think it feeds into a short attention span culture. I find myself tweaking my levels now to make them easier simply because I want people to clear them!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Thanks a lot! I appreciate the comments.
And yeah, it's all about the fun factor, that's why we play. I don't mind the pixel perfect speedrunner levels: I appreciate them, they do take a lot to design, but they're no good unless you can dedicate lots of time to playing them. They need their own category.
There should also be some kind of voting system for marking troll levels for their own category (not to report them, people seem to like trial & error runs for whatever reason) though the most simple solution for them to implement is, as a lot of people have said, an 'impossible/insane' difficulty level.
@TheWindWaker The star system is really the only 'goal' to achieve given there's no other sort of tangible reward in the game. 100 Mario should be 10 Mario for all but expert level, it's just far too many lives, making the 3 reward lives a waste of time. One thing I did notice is that either some of mine weren't registering or they have 'expired' since. On both your earlier levels I went on to play again in the last few days I noticed they were allowing me to star them, yet I blatantly already had done so (showed the completed flag and some even had my comments on- there's simply no way I didn't star them). Have you guys noticed this? Have you gained extra/lost any due to this?
I, too, tried to make some easier levels but it's annoying that we're forced to consider that angle just to avoid them being dumped in the 'hard' category. Of course the other resolution to a lot of these problems is CHECKPOINTS. Daft omission.
And guys, honestly both your level designs are great and I have you both 'followed' on SMM to await your next creations. My son likes them too, though finds most of them too tricky to fInish haha.
Our next level should be ready later so I will post the code on here.
For my next next level I may do a coin collecting challenge but stick to straight-forward Mario platforming styles.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR @TheWindWaker
OK new level: this one me and my son designed on graph paper before hand. It's pretty damn tough but has lots of secret routes.
6ACB-0000-0092-7541
Hopefully it's not TOO hard. Tried to stick with solid platforming without to much gimmickry. Enjoy!
@FLUX_CAPACITOR @TheWindWaker I did a little research and apparently you can remove a level but still keep your stars. I'd imagine that means if you delete a level, tweak it, re-upload it, you'll lose the stars for said level but will keep them in your overall count. Still have no idea about levels actually being removed though.
Almost makes me want to make an auto level, nab some stars, delete it, just so I can unlock the upload slots... naaaah not doing that. Hate those levels too much.
I'm happy to keep this mini community going, gives an added purpose to uploading levels and we give much more detailed feedback.
I was going to suggest that maybe we could come up with a theme or a core idea and essentially make a level each all using the same level title just to see how it turns out (e.g. ice cave with wall jumps or only use 5 types of object only etc, but obviously something better than that). More to see how our respective styles comes through. Honestly can't think of anything of the top of my head right but I'll have a think! You guys on board with that?
@CTMike @FLUX_CAPACITOR
I am in agreement with you both on all points! I am glad we have our little corner of a comment section. After perusing other creators' profiles, I truly appreciate your abilities and creativity in level design.
I love your idea of a theme!! Let's do it! Maybe I'll throw out four and we can decide:
1) You mentioned ice cave/ wall jumps, so let's include that as an option.
2) We've mentioned previously a smash bros theme (unless one of you already did it and I missed it...)
3) Underwater... I have yet to venture into the deep blue. The real challenge would be making a water level actually... fun? Just kidding... sort of.
And finally 4) Volcano Escape! Just off the top of the head...
Open to other suggestions of course, but maybe for round one we could pick one of these and there's always room for round two!
p.s. I'm going to upload a joke level just for you guys! At least 14 hours from now. I can only get on late at night here in the states, so I am slow in getting my stuff created.
@TheWindWaker Yes, awesome! I like the idea of volcano escape the most I think. Smash would need narrowing down a bit haha
@FLUX_CAPACITOR Mario's mushroom trip was really crazy! And as for your water level, I thought the aesthetics were really nice. How you used the green semi-solid platform and checkerboard blocks was right on!
@CTMike ok guys so my tounge-in-cheek parody of don't move levels is uploaded. Unfortunately for my stars, Flux, I don't imagine people who like those levels will actually like this one. I did employ an unorthodox technique near the end that you may or may not have heard about. If it doesn't work then... sorry! And as always the comments will be your cheeky guide. Have fun! I better start on Volcano Escape!
@TheWindWaker @FLUX_CAPACITOR Alright then round 1) is 'Volcano Escape!'
Let's agree all's fair game for now see how we roll. 3-4 days sounds reasonable, gives us the weekend.
@FLUX_CAPACITOR I love your joke levels and they actually do play well! I'd echo the comments on the asthetic of the water level, too.
@TheWindWaker I haven't had a chance to play your new one yet and won't for about another 13 hours (blame time zones/work) but I'm looking forward to it!
Internal job interview today at work so Mario Maker will be perfect for winding down later tonight!
@FLUX-CAPACITOR @CTMike
Hey, guys! Looks like I missed all the action! I had a very busy weekend, but things have gotten back to a normal pace now. I'm good with email! I know I got one in my miiverse inbox, but one was attached to a friend request and disappeared. I'll write to the address I have in my messages and then you can start a group thread. Anything I can access from my computer will go so much faster for me. Miiverse, as cute and cuddly as it is, is hard to keep up with notifications, and you can't direct message from desktop as far as I know, which is inconvenient.
See you guys on the other side!
