Re: Video: Digital Foundry Puts Various Portable Chargers to the Test With Nintendo Switch

Boerewors

@Switch81tch
People complaining about the battery life are almost exclusively people that don't own a Switch and don't have any intention to ever do. Like you said: 95% of all gamers won't need battery life longer than 3 hours in their everyday life; it's not like we don't have the opportunity to charge it almost everywhere we go. And even if you can't charge it at school or work, I pity you if you have to travel more than 3 hours a day...

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Puts Various Portable Chargers to the Test With Nintendo Switch

Boerewors

I've recently bought a 30,000mAh powerbank for £28 and the mileage I get on it is insane... But all this talk bout bringing it on long flights is ridiculous of course, they'll never let you board with a powerbank like that; even the Switch itself has a li-ion battery which is considered to be too large to fly with.

If you've ever seen a lithium fire you know these restrictions are there for a reason, you can easily burn through the side of a plane or even make it explode while in- air.

Re: Here's a Transcript of what Suda51 Said During the Nintendo Switch Presentation

Boerewors

That translator couldn't have made it any more understandable than he did. Suda is big on wrestling and was throwing in wrestling-terms that hardly anyone understands, especially not an audience full of suits, which made it even more painful. I wouldn't be surprised if the Travis game has a huge emphasis on wrestling.

But Nintendo getting people up on the stage saying something like: "we don't really have an announcement or anything, but the Switch looks kinda cool I guess", was just awkward. They should've known better. Just explain what the console is and show things you're comfortable with showing, instead of holding a gun to a 7foot- tall Viking's head forcing him to say a few words on stage.

Re: CoroCoro Magazine Reportedly Pegs The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Spring Release

Boerewors

Apparently there are localization problems; Nintendo now has to decide whether to launch at the same time worldwide or launch it as a multi- stage rocket, with Europe getting the game in the holiday season of this year.

I don't think launching it in the festive season would be a bad idea, if they also have a big Mario game at launch that is. Although Nintendo games always have legs, with launchgames selling throughout a concole's lifetime, bringing Zelda in October or November would probably mean a huge boost for Switch sales; for a console that doesn't launch in the biggest month of the year sales wise, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the limelight all for yourselve with a true open world Zelda game.

Re: EB Games Listing Includes Mario Kart 8 and Skyrim for Switch

Boerewors

The suspense is killing me! 2017 will be such an expensive year I'm afraid; there are few games in my currrent PC/ PS4/ Xbox library I can't think of that wouldn't be way better if they were also portable.

But with game prices of other publishers than Nintendo dropping like crazy mere weeks after launch, undermining the value of the IP in the process imo, I'll just order everything Nintendo day 1 and wait for price drops on non- Switch games I really want.

Re: Rumour: New Beyond Good & Evil Title Set to Be A 'Semi-Reboot' and NX Exclusive

Boerewors

Kinda similar to how Bayonetta 2 came to be it seems. And just like Bayonetta 2 it doesn't have the mass market appeal people who frequent sites like these believe it has. That doesn't mean I'm not supportive of- and extremely happy with- Nintendo picking up franchises like these, but ultimately BG&E won't sell systems like an annual CoD, FIFA, Madden or Pokémon does. There's a perfectly good reason Ubisoft still hasn't made the sequel to this game after all these years; it's a game that will probably cost Assassin's Creed kinda money to develop if they wanna do it justice, but isn't likely to sell 1/5 of the units AC would.

Re: Nintendo Is Now More Valuable Than Sony Thanks To Pokémon GO

Boerewors

I was told Nintendo is the majority stakeholder in The Pokemon Company, but the actual Pokemon IP is split in 3 almost equal parts. A tad more than 1/3 of the IP is owned by Nintendo and TPC ownes another 1/3, which means Nintendo is actually making more money than is assumed in almost all popular and gaming media.

And with their royal share in Niantic the real question isn't which cut Ninty will get, but if this game will monetize its popularity and if it does; for how long.

Re: Interview: Sadame and Its Quest to Bring Exciting Action and Japanese History Together

Boerewors

@iamDTS Wasn't there an NA price announced? How odd. In Europe it's €15, so you can expect it to be $15.

This game looks so sweet, but I'm afraid I'm getting too carried away by the beautiful artstyle, so I hope NL and some other outlets will post a review. With €15 it isn't so much that I'm afraid of losing my money, but with so many great games out I'm actually afraid of spending my time wrong.

Re: Pokémon's Ash And Gary Are Getting The Nendoroid Treatment

Boerewors

@GinHunter
Gotcha! I feel like mine is about the same, yet I want it! I gotta watch out for bootlegs though: paid about $75 for mine in Japan and flew to Hong Kong not much later where I saw the exact same Nendoroids stacked meters high, only they were fakes which I could only tell from one little detail on the side of the boxes. Since I was curious about those I bought one for $10, which was probably way too much too, and back home I opened both: if I hadn't known I honest to God wouldn't have been able to spot the bootleg. The quality of the pokeballs was slightly off, but the head of the bootleg was actually better looking and where my original backpack wouldn't fit the stand, my fake one was a perfect fit!

To this day I never buy Nedoroids at non official resellers; they could sell me a bootleg with both the shop and myself not knowing.

@JaxonH
Lol, you already know the answer to that question!

Re: Pokémon's Ash And Gary Are Getting The Nendoroid Treatment

Boerewors

@Damo
Bit late to the party here, but I believe you're actually right, at least about Ash. I own the Pokemon Trainer Red Nendoroid, so why would they make another one? It makes perfect sense however if they made an "Ash" one from the cartoon.

Can't believe 2 figures none of these people will probably ever own stirred up such a controversy

Re: Talking Point: Learning Lessons From the Past Can Define Nintendo's NX Launch

Boerewors

They should remaster all excellent Wii U games like SM3DW, MK8, W101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Sm4sh, Splatoon, Xenoblade, DK: TF and Mario Maker and sprinkle them across the launch year. Start off strong with a new 3D Mario and Ultimate Sm4sh and then follow it up with one of those remastered games every month, combined with a solid VC line up.

It would be a crying shame if these games end up being played by millions instead of 10s of millions and if NX turns out to be a powerful handheld with a TV out in the shape of a dock, can you imagine playing these games on a handheld? If we look at the Vita and what it can handle then a brand new handheld could easily be stronger than the Wii U is. They could even opt for some extra juice with the home console dock, but I keep on saying Nintendo doesn't need more power; in the end it all boils down to the initial pricepoint.

If Nintendo makes a future proof handheld/ homeconsole hybrid, which is ready for a cloud computing service Nintendo has to be working on, and they manage to put it on the market at a slight loss for $199, they'll have a huge library of games to offer to make tons of money on. CoD isn't what Nintendo gamers want, Nintendo has to rely more on their own games and make deals with publishers like Ubisoft to get games like AC running on their hardware because for those games there is a market on a Nintendo device.

One account for all my Nintendo games, playing Splatoon or Mario Maker on the go with an ergonomically designed handheld with a freaking R2 and L2, being able to play my IOS games on my homeconsole when I docked the handheld, keep on delivering party games like Mario Party for families to enjoy and most of all a VC that has all the great Nintendo games up until the Wii era, where I can buy games that will forever be mine and never have to repurchase again!

Re: Hardware Review: We Look at a Definitive GameCube HDMI Mod

Boerewors

Instead of going through all this trouble I wanna recommend to all retro gamers to try and find a Sony Trinitron or a similar model; it makes some GC games look like late gen PS360 games (HUDs and menus aside)! These TVs usually cost a fraction of mods like these and can obviously be used for ALL retro consoles. Most people who are selling are usually glad they can get rid of it, these suckers way like 200 pounds, and it will make the transition from your old TV, CRT or PLASMA/ LCD, look like when you first played on the Wii U after all these years of SD Wii gaming.

Re: Video: Learn About The Real World Mythology Behind Pokémon

Boerewors

@Maxz
Haha, don't be! I learned quite some interesting things in the process and you'll never forget Pik A. Schoen, a fictional and delusional South African inventor.
Me and my brothers always come up with stories like these about fictional birds names or Rugby players for instance that sound like they could be real. If we go hiking we can talk hours about animals that don't exist, but could based on our description, or when we're watching a game in our local pub we talk about fictional rugby, cricket or soccer players from the 70's who weren't such cry babies or wannabe models/ popstars as the modern day athletes.

Re: Video: Learn About The Real World Mythology Behind Pokémon

Boerewors

@Maxz
I'm actually glad I made up that fact, cause your story is quite interesting. Not only did I learn the possible origin of Pikachu's name, I also know that I need to use more emoticons from now on!

Pik A. Schoen tragically died in 2008 while he was working on his latest invention he called InterWeb, that would have made it possible for people with computers to communicate with eachother via 'interpost', make 'interwebareas' where you could display news for others to read for example and even have something he called 'Webflicks' where videos could be shown of cats and babies.

@dadajo
Am I the victim of 2 trolls or are you guys serious?

Re: Video: Learn About The Real World Mythology Behind Pokémon

Boerewors

Little known fact: Pikachu was originally a reference to the South African "inventor" of electricity: 'Pik A. Schoen'. Inventor is intentionally put in quotation marks, because Pik claimed he invented it in the late 80s, when he was just 23 years old. We'll never know if he indeed invented it, my guess is he didn't, but his name will forever live on through Pikachu.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2016

Boerewors

@Pac-Fan
Do you happen to know if Lego Avengers on vita and 3ds will be the same games that are ported to the handheld or that they get their own versions like they always had? I too heard that the handheld version would have open worlds, but I just want the exact same game. For the Vita it surely can't be a problem, it never was, but I don't wanna be stuck with an inferior version.

Lego Marvel is such a wonderful game which my kids play at least 4 times a week so we can't wait for this one. But as a real Marvel fan I'd very much like to have a version of my own on the Vita since that's my favorite handheld in like forever. The fan service and humor in these games is so wonderful that I always get a little pissed that we don't get an actual Marvel game of that quality; a Marvel Ultimate Alliance kinda game on this gen with Lego Marvel's open world and mission structure, the incredible fanservice and humor would be so awesome!

Re: EA CFO Explains Why the Company Doesn't Make Wii U Games Anymore

Boerewors

@Xenocity
I'm not entirely sure, but it's not unthinkable that when Nintendo stopped using them as "preferred supplier" they started a chain reaction which ultimately lead to GameSpy focusing on other areas. I heard a "reconstruction" of these events where I was told that in several meetings GameSpy had in the months before Nintendo stepped away, they were more or less told to staff up because of how satisfied Nintendo was. But Nintendo stopped using them for newer project before GameSpy ended their service, but due to contractual obligations they had to maintain DSi games and MK7 support for instance.

So GameSpy perhaps ending their services on account of Nintendo's abrupt change of direction is pure speculation on my part, but it would make sense. I do know that the people at GameSpy at that time found it unbelievable because MK7 was one of the most crowded online games of the time, and even with Nintendo simply not understanding the online business as one might expect, GameSpy did an excellent job on maintaining the servers.

Re: EA CFO Explains Why the Company Doesn't Make Wii U Games Anymore

Boerewors

Didn't have the time to read all comments, so I'm sorry if this been said already, but lots of insiders have already suggested why EA abandoned the Wii U so early. Like the article suggests the online component of the Wii U was of great interest to EA, mainly because they wanted to offer ALL online Nintendo services, even for Nintendo games. EA tried pressuring Nintendo into this with the Wii at some point, without succes, but it didn't stop them from trying it again with the Wii U. I don't know the specifics of these negotiations, but in the end Nintendo cherished their independence and didn't want to rely too much on EA.

I'm pretty sure we'll hear more about this at some point, because one of their biggest online server providers and partner up until the EA interference was GameSpy, a company with corporate ties to IGN (I believe they even merged at some point in the 2000s). Nintendo stopped working with GameSpy all of a sudden after them providing some pretty decent services with MK7 for instance and it was in fact EA that tried forcing Origin, or a similar service, on Nintendo just like they tried with the OG Xbox too at some point.

EA felt it was used by Nintendo, just like they did so many times before in their history together, and figured Nintendo just needed them to show off their "huge Western support". The Wii eventually turned out too big to ignore for EA, but as soon as it was clear the Wii U wasn't selling as Nintendo hoped, all plugs were pulled out of the few projects (mostly ports) they were still working on.

Re: Feature: Reflecting On Three Years With The Wii U - Part One

Boerewors

I still remember picking up my Wii U at a point in life where I first experienced that gaming wasn't as fun as it used to be. I banned the Wii out of my household after about a month and therefore I only got to play on my PS3 and 360; looking back I realize those had some excellent games as well, but playing them the last 2 years of that generation felt like going through the motion more than actually enjoying myself.

The Wii U would be for my kids to play on and I bought it for an insanely low price because some retailer decided not to sell it anymore. My kids loved it, but I didn't even look up when they were laughing and having fun because I was sure this was another gimmicky Wii-esque failure. But then one day the kids asked for help with NSMB for Wii U and I actually held the GamePad in my hand properly to play a game instead of just installing firmware; I was hooked the minute I started playing and that week it was as if all my love for gaming was flowing back. Not long after this "gaming revelation" W101 dropped and this was the game that totally sealed the deal and made me really regret I let Nintendo slip out of my life. W101 is still my favorite game of this decade and with games like this, but also Splatoon, Bayonetta and Pikmin I really get this DreamCast vibe, where Mario Kart, DK and SSB make me feel as if I'm playing a HD SNES.

I needed Nintendo to start enjoying other games again and now I play on my PS and Xbox again and love every minute of it. Just Nintendo games can't fulfill all my needs, just like the PS and Xbox can't, but I need Nintendo's fun, tight gameplay and excellent production values more than anything to appreciate gaming as a whole. There are multiple theories to why Wii U failed, but I do believe it deserved a better faith. As adults with busy lives there's simply no better console to own than the Wii U; if you boot up MK8 you're competing in a cup within 30 seconds and it doesn't require a huge time investment. Other games ask so much of their players and lots of them don't respect your time, but with Nintendo you'll always know what you're gonna get... and it never lets you down!

Re: Humour: The Pain Of Being A Wii U Owner This Christmas, Summed Up In Rap Form

Boerewors

They should have made the Wii U $199 a year ago, with an optional GamePad for all I care, so people would be impulse buying like crazy. The Wii U simply isn't a "main console" for most gamers over 12, but once you own it you'll probably play it more than your PS4 or One.

Usually I'm not a fan of remasters, but when the NX drops I hope the just remaster all these wonderful Wii U titles we've been getting, because it's such a shame that so little gamers have experienced games like Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, SM3DW, Pikmin 3, Splatoon and the best Mario Kart and SSB ever made (arguably ).

That said, I still don't understand that Nintendo is so unsuccessful with the games they've been putting out. Especially for people who have a job and families, who probably grew up on Nintendo, the Wii U is just perfect to get your game on: no complicated control schemes of the need to play 4 hours to actually accomplish something, you just pick it up and play.

Re: Preview: Getting Lost in the World of Xenoblade Chronicles X

@JaxonH
For some reason I didn't think of this before reading your comment: I swapped my PS4s drive for a 2TB one and I put away the stock HDD and totally forgot about it. That'll be my dedicated Wii U drive now! Thanks!

OT: Can't wait for this game to drop. I chose to leave my pip boy edition of Fallout untouched because I wanna play XCX first. No matter how much I like FO, I'll never lose myself in the world as much as Xenoblade can accomplish. I always found it odd that I somehow are less likely to immerse myself in more "realistic" settings, where I always play like some sort of a psychopath, than in a high fantasy or anime sci fi world. In a game like Xenoblade I know the characters, care about my allies and try to be an all around good guy and hero, in Fallout I'd shoot an NPC for talking too long and steal everything I can move out of plain sight.

It was meant as a joke, albeit not a very good one, where people would first read 'disgusting' and assume I was talking bout the 2 men kissing. But before they went off to write a political correct reply where they would call me a homophobe, they'd read I was just joking because I pretended to be talking bout the price of the game.

Unfortunately people don't get offended these days when narrow minded people bash gays, but they do when someone calls a game they like too expensive

Me and my brother are playing this game and we're already using some of the horrible catch phrases, just like we would with a Wiseau movie, and I can't wait to tell him bout Ita's All American ( ) twin brother. Hahah, they look so much alike!

@Phil_Kavadias
That's such a coincidence you mention Daikatana! Me and my brother were playing it because we have a preview code and after 10 minutes or so we looked at each other and said "Daikatana"! I am not kidding you!

I'm really curious how the multiplayer will turn out, although I'm afraid it won't be as crowded as they initially intended. There has been a lot of criticism about the game so far, totally understandable, I'm not gonna lie, but as far as I know, this game was intended as a multiplayer game and the SP was just to get accustomed to the controls.

The underlying mechanics are pretty bad, but somehow this game won't let me go. If this will be just remotely playable online, I actually feel like I'm gonna enjoy it. This has all the ingredients to become my guilty pleasure, but it needs a decent multiplayer component to stay attractive. I think it will feel a bit like the early online games we played online on our consoles like SOCOM, where things weren't as polished as we are used to now, but where we still enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

Can a game be so bad it's good? I believe this game will come very close to answering that, at least for me it will.

Re: Nintendo Seeks Improvement at E3 2016, Though Miyamoto Defends Near-Term Rather Than "Dream-Like Demonstrations"

Boerewors

I honestly believe the biggest reason for not showcasing the Wii U's future titles is because there are no future titles. Xenoblade aside, 2015 is filled with $40 games that seem to be a stopgap till their next console hits the market. If they want this new console to be a hit, they simply can't focus to much on the Wii U, because all teams are needed to create a decent launch line-up for (next year's) NX.

Re: Video: Shigeru Miyamoto Visits Jim Henson Studios

Then they would simply own our entire childhood. 5 years ago I would have cried if Disney took over, but seeing how they handle Star Wars and Marvel it might not be that bad. Nintendo has these crazy imaginative characters, but I sometimes fear that newer generations will hardly know them. My kids know practically all Nintendo IP, but friends of theirs don't have a single clue who Yoshi, Kirby or even Luigi is. Disney could really turn things around and make movies and themeparks, but better yet: Nintendo can use Disney's catalog to make games. Imagine a SSB with Nintendo and Disney IP!

Re: Famitsu Unleashes Xenoblade Chronicles X Score

@Bi-Mabeobsa
Alrhough that is most certainly true, I can't blame a casual gamer for depending mostly on reviews. People who frequent sites like this have a better understanding of how the industry works and are better aware of what reviews represent; but your regular Joe Sixpack isn't watching translated Nintendo Directs and isn't participating in discussions like these....they just want a score and the name CoD or an 8,5 and up means "buy" and everything else is crap anyways, at least to them.

Re: Famitsu Unleashes Xenoblade Chronicles X Score

Boerewors

@TwilightAngel
I don't personally, but knowing lots of people do, it can totally make or break a game. When a 100+ hour game gets the same score as a 2d AC game, you might think twice about commiting yourself to it. An RPG this big has to be really good in every aspect to make a dent saleswise and scoring an average score on Famitsu (where 8,5 is quite average weirdly enough) doesn't help.
Will I buy this game regardless of the scores? I sure will, just like most people visiting this site...but scores like these probably mean it won't be a best seller, let alone a game that moves consoles.
