Wow....seeing this list and actually realizing I had to leave at least 5 games out, I wish the Vita had this library or that the 3ds was more like the Vita. The Vita is beautiful and it handles like a charm, almost as if you're holding a real controller, but as Nintendo shown time and time again: it's all bout the games!
The 3ds is a clumsy clamshell which feels a tad cheap, especially the "extra wobbly" new3ds, but has seen more action in this household than a 20y.o. girl from New Jersey. Every generation consoles, home and handheld comes with their own must-owns, but Nintendo handhelds are in a league of their own. They actually showed indie devs what to do with smaller budgets and less power before it was hip. If you just own all games that are considered must haves by most on all Nintendo handhelds, you would have a life long supply of top games. We tend to forget what amazing games they put out, especially in times of drought, but whenever someone asks you what game to buy on the 3ds you can sum up 20 in no time.
@antdickens Nice article. Just one lil thing, and I'm sorry: compliment = complement... Unless mobile games will literally tell console games that they are beautiful and still relevant, not matter what people say
@Purple If your friends have a PS4, than it's a no- brainer. Otherwise it's more or less a question if you prefer Forza or GT, or SF or KI. I like my One better at the moment, but that's mainly because of Sony's empty promises, where I didn't expect anything from Xbox, but the experience is really good so far. And then there's the money issue: I recently bought another One to send back home for just €300, that's with a game...that's €100 cheaper than the PS4 here in Europe. I would honestly wait till a big fat price cut comes along: by that time here will be a library worth owning.
@Purple I'm in a lucky position where I own all consoles available, so for me the Wii U is a true pearl. Every 1st party game is a hit for me personally and I'm at an age where everything that I grew up on, seems better. The Wii U is giving me my retro games, in an HD "jacket". But could I possibly rely on my Wii U alone? Nope, I need my fighters too, heck I own an One primarily for KI, and there are certain games I just can't go on without. But personally if I had to choose, I'd probably stick with the Wii U anyway: it brings by far the most joy in my life and whenever there's a game out, I feel just like in the SNES days.
@Wolfgabe Yet those 20million keep on defending their purchase with often times ridiculing Nintendo. The Wii U has put out more "must- own" titles already than I'm 100% positive the PS4 will have when it turns 2, yet gamers don't care for timeless quality anymore it seems. Games like Mario 3d, Mario Kart or SSB, which are some of the best games I've seen in years, are "more of the same ol Nintendo crap" if you hear PS4 and One owners. But where "nintendo should try something new for once", they all get excited for yet another AC, CoD or BF. Even a game like Bloodborne, a game I'll probably adore, is still Demon/ Dark Souls in another skin... At least if you feel Mario Kart 8 isn't bringing anything new to the table, I believe Bloodborne must feel exactly the same. I completely fell in love with the Wii U about a year ago, in a time where I was expecting a lot from my One and PS4, and I still felt burned by the Wii which wasn't for me. But in all honesty, I had to really look into it before I realized the Wii U could actually appeal to me as a long time gamer. Nintendo just doesn't create hypes like they used to and like you said: in this day and age, you can sell 20million consoles on hype and promises alone.
I can totally picture myself handling their Twitter account as their new community manager who just got appointed a week earlier.... After I got fired I'd still think it was totally worth it!
This is one of those things that pisses me off immensely: there is an English version, but somehow the game isn't coming to Europe. Ever since this came out I've been checking the e shop updates week in, week out, without any sign of a European release. Why don't they just release it or at least tell us when they're planning to do so.
I need this nintendo!
@mowerdude
The Wii U actually is some sort of oversized 3ds, and the focus was on developing for Wii U for about a year and a half now probably. But I do too feel it began as a 3ds game, a logical succesor to the popular Canvas Curse but I don't think it got a Wii U treatment so Nintendo would have some Wii U games; I think it got shifted to the Wii U to prove once and for all the gamepad does have a function. But if anything, this proves that using the gamepad isn't as fun as they imagined. Although the game plays like a charm, you miss all the gorgeous graphics because you're so focussed on the gamepad. The gamepad is excellent for maps and inventories and such, but to fully rely on it while playing a game is a shame and a waste of my $1200 Plasma I bought which really brings out the best of this game.
I simply play waddle-dee, cause it's one of the finer looking games I've seen this generation. Where others get excited about the Order, I'm really impressed by this game and I can't wait for Yoshi to come.... And it seems we won't have to wait too long, since it got rated in Australia already. Good times ahead!
After dodging the Amiibo bullet I felt pretty proud of myself...sure, I own about 10 of them, but nothing what makes the ol wallet cry... Then came along these damned cover plates and all the money I "saved" on not buying Amiibo went into my newest addiction. Because these actually have a functionality I care about the first 5 were bought without thinking. Then there was this store that were practically giving them away at €10 a pop. Long story a lil shorter: I own 16 already with 3 on their way.... And the end is nowhere in sight. My favorites so far: the ambassador one ofc, the Kirby and Pika ones europe's getting in April, the wooden Mario one, the pink and white Mario retro and my Peach cover. This all until my Zelda plates arrive this week obviously... There's just one problem: I need a black new 3ds to really make the best of those covers I'm afraid :S
@Late
A J-RPG where you have to do the same thing more than once?? That's unheard of!
Jokes aside, it really destroys an otherwise near perfect game. The first 30 hours or so were so good, but at the end it became a grind, a grind the game's mechanics so actively seek to avoid.
Still it left me with a good feeling in the end, because for the first time in years it seems SE actually gets what they've been doing wrong the last years, but also what they were doing right before.
@rishisquid
Where u from? Maybe I know an online retailer. I made the mistake of getting a normal XL when I upgraded instead of the Pikachu edition I wanted but didn't pre order on time. I saw quite a few on eBay for just a few bucks more , but because of my hate of scalpers I couldn't give in to it and bought a regular XL. Because it wasn't my first choice I actually never liked it and hunted down a Pika 3ds in the end anyway.... The total costs of this endeavor being way higher than it would've been if I hadn't let my pride stand in the way of paying $20 extra in the first place. For handhelds more than homeconsoles, looks are pretty important. I own a regular n3ds now btw and pre ordered a MM n3ds XL, but my ambassador edition will most certainly be my main: the size is surprisingly good and the screen looks so sharp and crisp compared to the "old" XL. And looks wise you're set, the cover plates are really an awesome touch which I never thought I'd like... But it's been 2 weeks and I own 7 sets already
@rishisquid Sold out in most places. You can place yourself on an Amazon waiting list, maybe you'll get lucky. There are a bunch of retailers still offering the bundle, but it varies from country to country. If you really want the bundle, eBay will be full with them day 1; half of these go to scalpers anyway. But lately I see an increase in "less professional" scalpers who get anxious when they don't sell their bundle within 2 days and prices will go down quickly. Pay $20 more than in retail, but have the exact n3ds you want.
It's just such a shame the Wii U isn't getting the sales it deserves. But we can go on about whether the British have poor taste or not, in the end only Nintendo is to blame. Bad marketing and even worse naming of the console lead to a situation where even employees of some of the biggest retailers still not know the Wii U is actually not just a terribly expensive Wii peripheral. Wii U party basic SKUs are sold for anout £135 in the Netherlands and when I asked the girl behind the counter if she could believe these deals, she replied: "I feel its way too much for such an ugly tablet", in Dutch ofc And those are the people that have to inform customers. Nintendo should have made the gamepad optional a long time ago, although I love it to bits. Then it would have been possible for them to compete because they could price it really low; prices could have been £99 this Christmas giving the sharp decline in cost for the components. The gamepad is dragging them down, also due to the fact that the predicted productioncosts of the gamepad didn't go down as planned. With better advertising, a better name and an optional Gamepad (which Ninthousiasts would have bought anyway for £75 - £100) I honestly believe they could have sold 20 million by now, just with their own library alone. But íf they performed like that, there would've been way more 3rd party support to fulfill the needs of the British. All I know is that I'll be playing U games for years to come, like I do with all my other Nintendo consoles, but there's no way in hell I'm keeping the PS4 plugged in a day longer than necessary. I hope some day the new generation will start appreciating Nintendo again or at least demand the same quality that Ninty had been giving us over the years; cause a world filled with Ubisofts and EAs, is a world I don't wanna live in!
