The best thing about the Wii U is soft modding it. Playing GameCube games (that I legally own) off of a USB hard drive and using the Smash controller adaptor to use real GameCube controllers with certain games that I grew up with and still love and that Nintendo still won't re-release or remaster, such as Mario Golf TT and Mario Kart DD, is a truly great thing. Both games look great on the Wii U over HDMI. And yes I know they'll play in higher res and better on a PC but I don't care - this post is not about pc master race BS, this is about the Wii U.
Also, with the exception of Link's Awakening (edit: I forgot about the DS Zelda games) you can play almost the entire catalog of Zelda titles released for Nintendo consoles on the Wii U without any kind of modding, between VC and Wii mode and the Wii U remasters it has it covered. What other Nintendo console can make that claim?
Part of the reason I bought the NES mini and SNES mini was because I didn't have those real consoles or cartridges anymore but I still have my N64 and plenty of those cartridges. I'd like to see Analogue make a N64 with HDMI, that I would buy.
It's cute, but my Dreamcast emulates PS games better than that classic. I'll take the SNES Classic.
What I would really like is a Saturn Classic, with all of the RPGs by Working Designs, the 2D fighters, and Daytona USA for sure (the original with the better music, not CCE).
Typical Nintendo. Japan and sometimes Europe and Australia get the really good physical rewards and North America gets discounts on downloadable stuff, or if we're really lucky in the future, maybe a small desk calendar. Club Nintendo was a lot better. I got a pretty great 18 card 3ds Zelda game case there before it closed down. Not as great as the snes classic controller other regions were treated to but at least it was a somewhat decent physical reward for America, quite surprisingly.
Zero interest in a N64 Mini. N64 games have not aged well and look like ass on a hdtv whereas NES and SNES games have a timeless look to them. Most N64 games look only marginally better, but certainly more colorful, than their contemporaries in the 5th generation consoles and those competitors’ graphics looked terrible back then and they look even worse now to the point of borderline unplayable unless it’s a 2D game.
Much much better than a 5/10 score. This is the best electronic version of Monopoly that I've played, and that's the whole point. The problem is Monopoly itself - it is such a horrible, flawed, terrible game that playing it with real people is maddening. Nobody wants to make deals or trades, it just becomes a boring game of attrition. That is why video game Monopoly exists. Good luck finding real people to play Monopoly with but for a quick time waster to play against the computer this is great and my favorite version yet.
Nintendo can go to hell. I expect that anyone who got pre-orders through from Best Buy or Amazon will have them cancelled just as Walmart was forced to cancel their preorders due to Nintendo being America-hating jerks as usual.
Once again Nintendo has nobody to blame but themselves. It is the result of their own gross incompetence as a manufacturer that people are shunning BotW amiibos and buying the entire pack of BotW amiibos in tiny NFC cards from China for $15. If Nintendo actually cared to make enough to satisfy demand PEOPLE WOULD BUY THEM FROM NINTENDO. Nobody wants to spend $80 for one amiibo just because Nintendo doesn't give a rip if scalpers take profits away from them for themselves. Nintendo reaps what it sows and I hope they continue to get hurt until they adapt.
The most bone-headed part of this is that the app stops functioning if the screen goes to sleep. Nintendo had better fix that asap or people aren't going to bother using this garbage app if it remains in its currently half-baked state.
@Donutsavant They won't do that, they'd rather that we buy SNES games again through virtual console for a third time. Fourth time if you happened to buy it on the 3DS too. Forget cross-buy, that would be too kind of Nintendo to do for their customers - squeeze them like a turnip, that's the Nintendo way!
$40 seems like a great price for somebody looking for additional conventional controllers for a game like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, instead of additional players having to play with a single cramped JoyCon. I like it.
@Snakesglowcaps Most retailers were outright refusing to offer pre-orders. In America I think only Target did and only very briefly, like for a couple of hours. A blue-shirt at Best Buy was nearly hostile to me when I asked about a pre-order for it back in October.
@Incarta Why should those of us that plan on going physical release-only have to pay extra for Nintendo to beef up the built-in storage for you download-only gamers? You want extra storage - buy a SD card. $33 is a great price for a solid 128 GB card.
It was already live five minutes before the top of the hour, thus the early bird ones went awfully quickly. That was kind of weak but oh well, it's only £5 more. I still like the books, just wish he hadn't launched the KS before the posted time.
I am very impressed with the physical release of this game. I mean, it has a manual! The last game I've seen with a manual in a physical release was Shovel Knight. It's refreshing to see a publisher not cheapskating out for a change and in this case, again, it's an indie and not a AAA that goes the extra mile to provide a quality product.
I would just like to see Gamecube games available for Virtual Console on the Switch. The current joy-cons without analog triggers are fine for the two games I want on VC, namely Mario Golf Toadstool Tour and Mario Kart Double Dash. Mario Kart 8 is awesome but I would really love to play some Double Dash in local multiplayer on the go. Or, re-release Double Dash for the Switch. It was arguably the best Mario Kart game ever made, or at least second best.
This has to be one of the worst comment threads I've read on this site. Between people writing sarcastic posts trying to be funny, and the two annoying dudebros acting like Xenon and Borno bickering back and forth as they troll each other, there was a lot of garbage posts to filter through to find the valuable ones. Good luck to those that are genuinely having the disconnect issue and not just trolling, I hope Nintendo is able to resolve your issue. It sounds like they're willing to try to help. Let's see how it plays out.
I was planning on getting one around launch but then I found out that my truck licensing tags have increased nearly $300 this year due to a transit tax that was passed by the voters last year. So, goodbye new Switch at launch. Maybe later in the year.
There will be plenty available on March 3rd...on eBay and Craigslist. I'll wait until I can buy one retail in the store, same with the NES Classic I'm not paying extra just to line some jackwagon scalper's pockets. I eventually found a Classic in the store and I'll eventually find a Switch in the store too. The games I really want don't release until the end of April anyway.
@iGen "Anybody else feel the urge to rip their GC collection? Does anyone recommend a program or app or something best for ripping GC discs? Maybe a HB Wii? Probably a computer, right? I don't have any GCN compatible disc drives though. Help. D:"
CleanRip from the Homebrew Channel on the Wii works great for backing up Wii and GameCube discs to ISOs, even rips the BCA if something requires that. Then, load the ISOs to a USB drive connected to your Wii and use a launcher from the HBC called Nintendont to play them. Store away your GameCube and Wii discs in a safe place and just play them off of the hard drive connected to your Wii, save wear and tear on your console's optical drive as well.
Looks well built, I'm really looking forward to getting a Switch. One thing I'd like to know and I'm not sure it has been covered yet, is the screen IPS or TN? I suspect it's IPS based on the screenshots it appears to be a beautiful screen, I'm hoping it's IPS for the multiplayer aspect having it on a table with a TN screen would kind of suck.
@KirbyTheVampire "No one's saying the Switch will die if Nintendo doesn't reveal this stuff, but the question is WHY aren't they revealing it?"
They're too busy working overtime making more product in their factories to get it to us on time. Actually I hope there's some truth to that, I missed out on the Switch pre-order and would still like to get one around launch, and a lot of people still want NES Classics.
I don't think local multiplayer ever actually died. Nintendo has consistently kept it alive with their consoles and the Switch is no different in that regard. The Wii U for example is an excellent "couch co-op" console. The Switch if anything might just excel at spreading local multiplayer to more places outside of the home due to its portable nature and built-in controllers for two. Or, it may not, it may flop like the Wii U sadly flopped because the majority of gamers prefer online play these days, sitting at home in their comfy chair with their beer or bong at their side. I hope the Switch succeeds because local multiplayer is still a lot of fun. Every time my coworker or I have brought a Wii U into work for game day lunches everyone involved has a blast. The Switch should make that even easier and more frequent since it's easier to transport around than a Wii U.
It really is not worth any more than MSRP so please please do not give your hard earned cash to a dirty rotten scalper. It's not all that great of a device, certainly not worth the hype it has garnered. It's cool for the nostalgia factor and the controller feels very authentic but the emulation of the games is not as good as what a Raspberry Pi can do, or FCE Ultra GX on Wii homebrew. The games do look a heck of a lot better than the Virtual Console on the Wii U but that's the because the NES virtual console on the Wii U is garbage, it's not a high bar to beat. I hope Nintendo gets enough stock in to satisfy everyone who wants one and I really hope that the rotten scalpers get stuck with their stock and have to sell it at MSRP or even a small loss. That would make my year.
Hacking other systems' emulators onto the NES mini harms the retro appeal of it. It's one thing to expand the NES library but adding additional consoles just for the hell of it is taking it too far. It's not even that great of an emulator box compared to alternatives really. Hakchi2 is great, easy to use, and polished but when modded the system gives too many C8 and C2 errors and the quality of the emulation of the games is not as good as the more established emulators available on Wii Homebrew such as FCE Ultra. Plus there are a lot of mappers that the Classic doesn't support and that translates into more than a few games that don't work.
@retro_player_22 You forgot FCE Ultra GX on Wii Homebrew and nesDS on the Supercard.
The emulation on the NES Classic really brings home just how terrible the emulation is on the Wii U Virtual Console. The quality of the Wii U VC is inexcusable, NES games look washed out and blurry even over HDMI. It's some of the worst looking emulation around.
@Hordak "I found the Wii U Gamepad to be the most comfortable Controller I've ever used. I have large hands and find the 3DS to be the most uncomfortable design. Which is Switch closer to?"
I'm reserving judgement on the comfort of the Switch until I can hold one in my hands. I agree with you that the Wii U Gamepad is very comfortable and well contoured whereas the 3DS, at least the N3DSXL that I own, is very uncomfortable and makes my hands cramp. Especially in games like Mario Kart 7. I hope the Switch is closer to the Wii U Gamepad in comfort than the 3DS.
Either way I still want a Switch eventually because of Nintendo games. Whereas Xbox and Playstation mostly come out with the same types of games over and over, whether shooter or racing game that is largely the same as the version on their last console, Nintendo always seems to innovate and bring out new ideas that look fun. The Wii U is still one of my favorite consoles as it basically brought the DS concept to the living room and so far I like the concept behind the Switch as well. Plus that hardware looks very slick and very well built much like the New 3DS. As much as I joked with coworkers about the sillyness of 1-2 Switch and the milking game, secretly I kind of want to get it. I always have a good time with Nintendo games whereas Xbox and Playstation can be a good time playing with friends online, which they both do very well, it's always the same types of games. It seems like to me the real innovation in gaming these days is still on Nintendo consoles and PC gaming with indie titles. I hope the Switch isn't Nintendo's last console and that they keep cranking them out even into my old age.
@eaglesfly76 It's sad, gaming review sites did the same thing to the Wii U version. Too many people for years have compared each new Yoshi game against the almighty Yoshi's Island instead of appreciating the game in its own right. I loved the Wii U version, some of the most beautiful graphics I've seen in a video game, and catchy music. 3DS version looks to be good too.
I lucked out and found one last night at the Walmart by my work, just after I got off of work, asked the guy in the electronics dept if he knew when they were getting more stock in and he said that one had just come in and went in the back to get it for me. Took a few months but I'm glad I finally got one and didn't have to pay 2x the retail price to a dirty scalper. It really is a cool little toy and the emulation of NES games looks 10x better than the Wii U Virtual Console. It's really a night and day difference. I'm glad that they haven't discontinued it and they're working on getting more into the market. I hope that everyone that wants one is able to get one soon and enjoy it, same with the Switch. Cheers.
At first glance that Genesis controller in the top photo looked suspiciously like one of those garbage knock-off Saturn controllers available on eBay for $8 shipped. I've never used such a garbage controller as one of those knock-off USB Saturn controllers - complete turd quality.

That was a fun read, in my $.02 the NES is ranked far too low and the N64 is ranked too high. The Game Boy should also be ranked higher.
Re: Random: New York Times Crossword Puzzle Forgets That The Wii U Was A Thing
The best thing about the Wii U is soft modding it. At first glance that Genesis controller in the top photo looked suspiciously like one of those garbage knock-off Saturn controllers available on eBay for $8 shipped. I've never used such a garbage controller as one of those knock-off USB Saturn controllers - complete turd quality.
Re: Reggie on Wii U Support Going Forward
I only want one more game for the Wii U, just one (besides Zelda):
PLEASE NOA! PLEASE RELEASE THE SECRET OF MANA FOR VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!! The Japanese Wii U Virtual Console has had it for years.
A new Mario Golf would've been nice too but I suppose I can get World Tour for the 3DS to satisfy that fix.
