Consoles like the NES, SNES and Game Boy may just be fashioned from circuit boards, chips and plastic, but they're a portal to a seemingly limitless world of possibilities and will, for many players, have provided a wondrous backdrop for entire childhoods.
London-based artist Jing Zhang was recently commissioned by Sony to create an infographic for its "Parents' Guide" which added a little more magic to the reality of gaming tech, and she was then inspired to do the same for other classic hardware - mostly Nintendo-based. The images crack open some of the most iconic consoles of all time and add a little bit of fantasy to the internals.
The series features the NES, SNES, Game Boy, DS, Switch and Wii.
Even though we're perfectly aware that all that lies inside our beloved consoles is cold, hard tech, we'd much prefer it if they contained some of the elements shown above.

Looking good, except the Wii has a temple of time with a master sword? Oh dear someone got it mixed up with an N64. The Temple of Time in Twilight princess had the sceptre
Where is the N64????
I love, love, love the aesthetics over here, but am confused by the DS one. It's obviously a DS Lite, but then there's mentions of the 3DS and Super Mario Kart in there? I'm a stickler for consistency and that one is really all over the place.
EDIT: DSi, not DS Lite, of course.
i am OUTRAGE. where is my Wii U fantasy.
@Winklebottom Forgotten in (the temple of) time where it belongs
Those are cool.
Imagine if Mario Kart 9 has Dedicated Nintendo machine names as the Cup names. Wii Cup, Wii U Cup, NES Cup, SNES Cup, GBA Cup, NDS Cup, 3DS Cup, Switch Cup.
@Akropolon The 3DS is part of the DS family.
@Bunkerneath Well, the DS one mentions Super Mario Kart and Mode 7.
Super cool! Would of liked to have seen an N64 and Gamecube though.
"Starting Boost: You need to hit and hold accelerate when Lakitu's has the second light on"
Not only poor grammar, but you have to hit and hold accelerate when the second light fades - not when it's on... 1/10
Joke - they're cute! 10/10!
They are pretty cool.
Really like the Game Boy one! Bugs me slightly that the SNES one has a slightly discoloured front panel and the top is too dark (should match the eject button) but i'm being nit picky
I like most of them, too mario kart heavy though, and why foul up the iconic Nintendo font on the NES/controllers as it looks amateur at best there. SNES and GB the favorites of the lot there.
The pictures are nice but I'm struggling with cohesion. The images representing the "internals" don't really seem to represent anything analogous to actual hardware. Had they found a way to represent circuits or micro switches or even a CPU as if imagined in Mario or Zelda I'd have applauded their creativity. As it stands, though, it looks like they drew a few Nintendo mini worlds, sandwiched them in console shells, and pointed a few factoid bubbles at random places.
@Anti-Matter
That would actually be really cool, the bottom row of cups would all be be names of legacy systems with updated tracks from said system. They would still need to make all cups for switch as it doesn't have any of its own. Also you said NES cup? There is no NES Mariokart. You forgot Gamecube!
Where's the WiiU...? : (
@noobish_hat The letters 'DS' are literally in the name of the 3DS. It's part of the same extended family (like the Game Boy / Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance) and I imagine that's why the artist mentioned it in this image.
@noobish_hat DS = 'Dual Screens' ..even if you don't consider the 3DS to be the big brother of the original DS, it's hard to argue that they're not at least cousins #Familia
@Damo And both Game Boy and Gamecube have the word 'game' in them. That's not a valid argument.
Better still, the Original/Pocket/Color versions of the Game Boy are usually seen as one family (because similar performance) and the Original/SP/Micro versions of the Advance are seen as their own.
It just strikes me as odd to portray the DSi and then talk about hardware that wouldn't release in years (the 3DS) and refer to a game that was never made available for the DS (Super Mario Kart).
@Akropolon I can't believe we're actually arguing about whether or not the DS and 3DS are in the same extended family. Both have Dual Screens and DS in their names. Dual Screens. DS. Dual Screens. DS.
Also, Game Boy and Game Cube? Argh. Game Boy. Game Boy Advance. ARGH.
I need to get off the internet for a bit. It's literally driving me insane.
@NaviAndMii THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I thought I was going crazy.
@noobish_hat But DS literally refers to the design of the console. Dual Screens. That's a lot more specific than "PlayStation".
@Damo ds is actually developer system but I agree same family
@1UP_MARIO It's both but let's not have that debate
http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3904/p/606
@noobish_hat Nintendo uses the term 'family', but makes a distinction between DS Family and 3DS Family, so you're right

https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-3DS-Family/Nintendo-3DS-Family-94560.html
Similar names, similar 'families', but completely different systems (even if you can play DS games on a 3DS...)
@Akropolon
Not a DSi.
I am visibly upset. Where is the GameCube??
@ganonms Thank you. I was just about to share the same links. If we're going to use arbitrary terms such as "3DS Family" and "DS Family", we should at least adhere to what Nintendo uses itself. And this is how they do so.
To refer to 3DS games in a DS ("Family") poster is similar to referring to Gamecube games in a N64 poster. They're different systems with completely different specs from different times.
I don't get it...lol
Fantastic artwork, but she got the A and B buttons on the DS the wrong way round! Blasphemy!
@Akropolon If Nintendo really wanted to make a hard distinction between the two, they would've abandoned the 'DS' brand altogether. They kept the same form factor and the familiar 'DS' moniker for continuity...because they wanted us to see it as a direct evolution of the same concept. The 3DS was a continuation...it was familiar.
I have the same surname as my cousin - we're from different families, but at the same time we're in the same family.
In branding, in marketing, in concept, in form...the DS and 3DS are cousins. They're related.
They're distinct, yes - and the 3DS has grown up and had a family of its own...but the DS and 3DS are still family.
The 2 best consoles are missing!!! N64 and GameCube!
The ROMS had four colors of gray for the Gameboy, the screen was yellow and green. Really made a difference (for those who never had one), really warmed up the feel of the games. Black and white would have felt too stark for me as a kid.
These are really nice illustrations but the perspective is way off, everything looks bent.
@Akropolon You can't seriously be putting the Game Boy and the GameCube in one console line, just to try and win an argument from @Damo... (shakes head)
That's just about the most nonsensical comment I've read on here today. The brand name was Game Boy, NOT Game, so the GameCube could obviously never have been a part of that, so that comparison makes no sense whatsoever.
And contrary to what you're claiming, ALL Game Boy handhelds were a part of the Game Boy family. That's also pretty clear if you look at all the logos:
The brand name Game Boy is using the same font style in all logos, with only slight variations.
Performance also isn't a deciding factor at ALL in whether or not a certain handheld belongs to a certain family or not.
And the 3DS may not be a direct part of the DS family, but it is definitely related, and it's name also refers to that legacy. As do the double screens, the touch screen and other similarities that it shares with its cousins in the DS family. And let's not forget the backward compatibility with DS/DSi games.
It's very much like the Wii and Wii U. Totally different consoles, one considerably more powerful than the other, and yet still totally and completely related...
@ThanosReXXX First off, obviously the Game Boy and Gamecube have nothing to do with one another. That was my point.
Secondly, we actually agree on a lot of this. The DS and 3DS are related - in concept, in marketing, et cetera. Just like the Wii and Wii U are related, indeed. The same goes for the NES and SNES.
And you know what? If you'd seen an NES poster referring to SNES games or a Wii poster referring to Wii U games, I also would've mentioned that's weird.
If a poster claiming to be about the Nintendo Wii would then make references to Bayonetta, the Wii U Gamepad or Breath of the Wild, that would've been weird.
If a poster claiming to be about the NES would then make references to Super Mario Kart, Earthbound or Chrono Triger, that would've been weird.
And to see a poster about the Nintendo DS making references to several pieces of 3DS software and even a completely unrelated game (Super Mario Kart)? Yeah, I'd say that's weird.
I honestly don't see what's so controversial about that statement. Are the DS and 3DS related, thus 'family'? Sure. Are they in the exact same family? Nope and Nintendo doesn't think so either (check out the links from before). The 3DS is the successor to the DS, just like the Gamecube is to the N64 or the Switch is to the Wii U. To lump them in together for a design/poster that very obviously is showing a regular Nintendo DS is just nonsensical.
@ThanosReXXX I think I love you.
@Akropolon We do agree on that last part, the art is sorely missing N64 and GameCube posters, but I did find the point you trying to make in your discussion rather dumb. And yes, I did get that it was exactly what you were trying to say, but it was no good example for all the Game Boys not belonging in the same family.
@Damo As long as it's platonic, that's fine by me...
And you're welcome.
By the way: I certainly do share your thinking about quitting the internet sentiment, for about two times a day, at LEAST.
And comment sections on gaming websites aren't even the worst...
I'm sorry, but how weird is my initial point if Nintendo agrees with me?
@Damo literally said (copy-paste) "The 3DS is part of the DS family."
Nintendo says otherwise, seeing how they have a entire page describing exactly this "DS family" that does not include any 3DS. They do however have a different page describing the "Nintendo 3DS family".
Why am I on trial for agreeing with Nintendo's definitions?
@ThanosReXXX @Damo
Letting this whole arbitrary DS discussion go for a while: don't you at least agree with me that the DS poster is ridiculously inconsistent? Seeing how it not only references the DS and 3DS, but also the SNES and N64? To me it's just a cluttered mess of random references and nods.
@Akropolon You're not "on trial", unless you've got a very tender soul. People can't even take a bit of criticism these days... Which is especially weird if you've got no problem handing it out.
And it also wasn't for that part, but for making a nonsensical statement, intended or not, about Game Boy and GameCube. And also because of the supposed distinction between all the Game Boy handhelds, which wasn't correct.
As for the stuff mentioned/omitted in those images/posters: we actually do agree on that, like I kind of already said in comment #40.
Well, as for the Game Boy/Gamecube comment, I made that ridiculous comparison to point out that only naming conventions aren't enough to put different products in the same product line/family.
As for the distinction between the "Game Boy Family" and "Game Boy Advance Family", Nintendo doesn't have pages for those (seeing how both are obsolete by now), but Wikipedia refers to it as the "Game Boy Line" with individual families (Game Boy/Color/Advance). I can live with those definitions.
EDIT: With regards to the 'tender soul' part, I was merely using hyperbole. We're talking about video games here, I'm not easily offended when it comes to my pastimes.
@Winklebottom The "fantasy" is that the Wii U was worth making. 😂
The NES in the picture is actually an NES Classic. Look at the controller ports.
Very cool. Please showcase more Nintendo Nerdery like this in the future! 🐺
I've noticed a lot of American YouTubers say DS and drop the 3 from 3DS altogether.
@Thisismycomment @Menchi187. darn, guess it's back to square one.
No Virtual Boy?
The emojis look out of place. I love the idea, not so much the style (or lack of style). It's very generic.
Huh? Pretty sure the reason Bowser kidnaps Peach is to marry her 1) because he's in love with her, and 2) so he has a claim to the Mushroom Kingdom. This has been referenced multiple times throughout the years and various canon, with The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach, Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Odyssey, not to mention possibly some instruction booklets or other material I'm forgetting. And while it's partially true that the Spiny Shell debuted in Mario Kart 64 as a result of technical issues, it's actually not to scatter players and is in fact for the total opposite reason from what I gather.
@Winklebottom Yeah, and what about the 3ds?
@TheGreenMiner13 the 3DS? i'm sure it's somewhere. bigger and better than the DS fantasy.
@Altron440 good eye! Wouldn't have noticed otherwise.
Am I seriously reading an argument about whether or not the 3DS is in the same "family" as the DS?
Gotta love Nintendolife. I swear some of you people would try to argue against Nintendo making video games.
Worst yet, this is the 2nd time I've seen a member of the Nintendolife staff get sucked into a completely moronic argument. You guys gotta take a break from the Internet once in a while, I think you're starting to snap.
Nice.
They are pretty cool, they would make good posters!
