It's Time to Claim Your Nintendo Account User ID for Nintendo Switch

Some guy on Reddit alerted me to this last night...I'm excited to splat everyone as captainfalcon.

I'm shocked I remembered not just my password, but which letters were replaced by numbers or capitalized. I must not need a nap as much as it feels like.

Why won't it allow capital letters??? It keeps turning them into lower case!

No plans to buy a Switch yet, but I've been using 'Desrever' as my screen name for a little over a decade now, and I'm not gonna let anyone else have a chance at it.

I just get a message saying a password request has been sent to my email address! And just to top it off, no email!!

So is the account different from our current NNID? Do I have to create a new one specificially for the Switch or is my 3DS NNID going to work just fine?

I did it this morning. There's no caps allowed and some people have been saying that they can't choose a name over 10 characters. I'm glad I got to choose the name I had on my first Wii U. SLIGEACH_EIRE is my second name. I have both Wii U's still but use the second far more and it's where the vast majority of my digital purchases are.

I would like the option to change our NNID.

It's not working for me. I keep getting the site to send me an email verification code but it doesn't show up in my email.

@ShikabaneHime13 Nintendo Network hasn't been mentioned at all by Nintendo in regards to the Switch so yeah.
Nintendo Account, which was used for the My Nintendo rewards system, is the new account system for the Switch.

So if you haven't got a Nintendo account yet, make one now.

@Baker1000 I had the same, I believe it's because we used the NNNID to login, and so, didn't have a password. After setting the password, I could select my user ID.

@G0dlike I had this issue. You need to sign out of the "Nintendo Account" completely, click "Forgotten Password" and put in the original email you signed up with and click send reset email. And you'll probably need to do that 5 or 6 times until you actually get one. Then, reset your password and log in with your new one and it'll let you set your User ID.

Nothing Nintendo does with online ever works the way it should...

For those having issues with the User ID page going to a verification page, that's because a password hasn't been set for your Nintendo Account (not to be confused with your Nintendo Network ID). Go and set a password then you can create a User ID.

Nabbed my name since the start of the Nintendo Network, LinkedToThePast. Or, since the caps won't work, linkedtothepast.

Edit: I created a dummy My Nintendo account, and it seems that these usernames are, indeed, unique ones. I tried to use linkedtothepast on my dummy account and it said it was taken. I worried that they were all just nicknames like we use on the Wii U to name the Mii, but these are definitely more legitimate than that.

So, make sure you're grabbing the name you want, as this doesn't seem to be purely cosmetic, and IDs are unique.

I don't think this is necessarily the display name as only lowercase letters get saved. It's probably like a Steam ID, an alternative way to sign in and identify your account aside from your email address. You'll probably still have a Mii or Display name to set and change on your console.

I'm confused... when trying to enter my ID, it tells me to set a new ID, even though it says I haven't set one up yet?

I have a Nintendo account though, and I'm not sure if this is the 'ID'. I'd assume not, because the ID is a seperate option within the Nintendo account page, but I can't set it up because it tells me to set a new ID. Is it because I'm trying to use an uppercase letter in there?

@Yosher look at the main page and it will tell you what your user ID is. If you try to use the ID you already have set it will say it's "in use already".

The lack of capital letters is rather annoying. I enjoy camel casing my user name

@G0dlike The same thing happened to me. I think they just updated their password policy so you will have to update yours prior to setting your user ID. I also didn't get an email until I tried logging in from my PC.

EDIT: I just went for "joltebyte". My online username I've used since I was 13 and although I want to change it and I'm honestly getting sick of it, it's stuck with me and is who I am, I guess. Goodness my comments are way too long. Hope you liked my not-really-heartwarming heartwarming story of trying to find a username I'll still probably change when I wake up.

...Uh, it may just be me, but I've been able to create a User ID for months. I was trying to get something on Miitomo once and when I tried logging into my Nintendo Account it forced me to use my email instead of my ID, which I already thought I claimed. Ended up tinkering with the Nintendo Account management site until I saw that tab and now I just use my ID to log in.

Yeah that was happening to me this morning, I tried again a few hours later and it worked fine. It was probably just due to traffic, hopefully it's up now!

Got my username set since this morning in 1-2-done (not hard to guess what name it is). I was wondering why this wasn't up sooner but it has been a busy news day for NL.

We can change our User ID at any time, but are our previous IDs saved to our accounts? If we decide to change it back will we get the "This User ID is already in use" message?

It would be quite handy to save a few IDs to one account, and a bit daft for the old ones to become unusable (especially for the people originally claiming them).

@gamermole Maybe you can answer this? You seem to be changing your User ID quite a lot.

I also had the problem of not being able to set user id or password, just got a request to verify email address but received nothing.

The trick was to edit email address and replace old address with a new one. After that I got verification to my new address and then I was able to set the id.

Got the id I wanted, yay!

Monkey balls from what I gather I had gamermole but changed it to iwata_lives_on I'm guessing now that has freed gamermole up for someone else I can go back to gamermole aslong as noone else is using it. Try take gamermole and let me know if you can

EDIT. Yes I can go back and forth between names and it doesn't say taken. But as soon as you change then your old name is available to anyone.

Shame about the loss of case sensitive username as that was part of my NNID and display name since the launch of the Wii U and before that already on 3DS.

@gamermole It seems you are correct. I just tried taking "gamermole" and it was allowed, whereas "iwata_lives_on" was unavailable. I'm surprised we are able to use and lose User IDs so easily. Surely that must be a nightmare for Nintendo when tracking account information. And again, it seems pointless to have unique IDs in the first place.

Got mine! Now we just need to know if we will have two names again. I never knew if I was going to show up as my NNID or my nickname sometimes.

@SMW It was on a game to game basis. I know Nintendo games in general used your "display name" whereas a lot of third party games used the NNID itself. I think Zen Pinball and Star Wars pinball used the NNID in leaderboards, and Resident Evil Revelations had the NNID displayed above your avatar at all times when playing coop mode.

Got KinneKted, without caps for some dumb reason. I prefer to have all of my accounts unified under the same name. Does that make it easier for online predators to stalk me? Probably.

Because children commonly lie about their birthdays when they are underage so as to avoid an unnecessary credit charge, then they want to change it to their real ones when they actually come of age and when all the risk of doing that has expired.

Log into your Nintendo I'd and go to user info. Change id and it will ask to change password (just once) type a new one and then it will let you create a new profile name

@Monkey_Balls I'm guessing the user account info is linked to the Nintendo network ID and not the user name. So I still have gamermole as my I'd but my switch name will be iwata_lives_on

Got mine sorted 3 three weeks before the release of the Switch. Mine is WolfBlood9, same applies to small caps.

To clarify:

The User ID is what you use to sign into your account, and to add/accept friend invites.

The Nickname is what others see you as in-game.

Therefore, if you are concerned with the name that other players will see/refer to you as, it is the Nickname you want to alter. The User ID is an alternative to using your email address to login.

If I try to do it at "sign in with" it tells me it is already registered? I don't get it. Am I doing something wrong?

@Emperor-Palpsy After researching a bit and considering that it seems like the User ID were added back in December last year I think you are probably right, but then again it doesn't hurt to rather be safe than sorry :+).

I got what I wanted, so probably not a bad thing to prepare early either way or just get the ID you want even if it is only for the Nintendo Account and mobile games.

Anyone know if the "User ID" will be how we "friend" others, or will it still be based on our Nintendo Network ID?

Didn't think anyone would take MasterWario, but I got it anyway, just in case. I had some backup names too, another reason I wasn't too worried.

Um... the User ID is only for users to access their Nintendo Accounts. It will not represent the public nickname or username, which people can change at any time. It is also completely unrelated to Nintendo Network IDs.

So, creating a Nintendo account and linking your NNID to it, right? Yeah, did that a while ago already. It's like people are just discovering that you can do that.

@Shikinouta Of course we will (ultimately) accept it, which is also why I said "but what can you do?". Although I do find it somewhat bothersome that you can't simply decide for yourself how you want to write your profile name, so whether it's going to be all lower case or capitals won't be of any difference to me in that regard...

Ah geez, I thought this was just about Nintendo Accounts, but I guess this is another step. Nicolai was taken, so now I'm nicolai8bit.
