Good riddance, it never worked right in the first place. Only 480p and lower videos looked okay on my 3DS XL. Anything in a higher resolution would look like 144p.
And when I've gone back and checked in semi recent times to see if it had been fixed (Perhaps the past 12 months), the YouTube app crashes as it's attempting to load a video. Even went to the bother to delete and redownload it, with no success.
@EmmatheBest It's just a default color palette it appears. Doesn't seem to use the Super Game Boy's features in any meaningful way.
Too bad the GBC remake of the Game Boy game isn't here. Isn't a simple colorization like some GBC ports, but rather is a full graphical and audio makeover while maintaining the level layouts/themes, gameplay, and dialogue between levels.
I would expect a Super Mario 3D World port way before Super Mario Sunshine, so I suspect people are reading too much into this.
That said, I'd certainly love to see it. Especially as a Wii U fan that already has played through Super Mario 3D World, I'd love to revisit Sunshine with a HD remaster (Not that I wouldn't be thrilled to get a 1080p port of Super Mario 3D World on the NS).
Was a fun simcade on the Xbox 360 (It's really not a sim even though it's being labeled as such here; The handling is very easy going and accessible), so I think Switch racing fans will enjoy it.
I recently on the 360 played through the touring car portion and enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to wrapping up the other disciplines soon and bought the DLC add-ons that appealed to me just in case they quietly disappear.
I might even break down and buy the drag racing pack if I find myself wanting more when I've finished everything else, even though that's one aspect of motorsports along with drift competitions that doesn't appeal to me.
I wonder how long it will take when Nintendo officially confirms this for all the haters to switch from "NES is boring, give me SNES games" to "SNES is boring, give me N64 games". I suspect it won't be a long wait.
As one that owns the original SNES, a SNES Classic Edition, and a Super NT, I really don't have a need for SNES games on the Switch. But the controller itself is very tempting. It always has been one of my favorite gamepad designs. So if this has functionality in things like Arcade Archives downloads, classic compilations like the Capcom Mega Man collections, and so on, I'll definitely want one.
Now we just need Final Doom and Doom 64. Shame Doom Classic Complete got delisted yesterday for PS3, since it so far is the only way to officially play an accurate port of Final Doom on console hardware.
Nothing about how it performs on the Super Nintendo and GameCube? Not that anyone is going to be buying this for those when better (And cheaper) options exist, but someone that invests in one for their N64 might not mind having it pull double duty.
It should work since the video port is the same and they all support the same S-Video cables (And N64 can do both 240p and 480i, so they won't be throwing a resolution this doesn't know what to do with).
@JayJ No, it's the same in screenshots, including those here in this review. Digital Foundry Retro even mentions it in their Virtua Racing retrospective from a few weeks ago, so it's not just me.
All that said, I hope nobody misconstrued my post as serious criticism. M2 did a great job here and it's a minor issue. It's mostly just surprising rather than an actual problem (although I'd still love to see the correct colors).
Since I can't see M2 screwing this up, I think it has to be deliberate for some reason I'm not privy to rather than an actual error on their part (Although I have no clue why M2 or Sega may of wanted the colors modified).
Too bad the color palette is still screwed up. Was hoping to see it get fixed for the western release. Instead the red suspension bridge is now the Golden Gate, tires are gray instead of black, the red car is a pink car, etc.
This is going to be a non starter when Ultra HDMI comparisons start to be made. For this price, you may as well splurge and go all the way when the quality leap compared to this video is going to be so high.
@ReaderRagfish Considering how well it sells on the Wii even in the most recent iterations, it's incredibly hard to believe it's a mistake for a production with such low development expenses. Even in recent years it's still the best selling version of the title, although I wouldn't be shocked to find out that Switch now outsells it (An unreliable site for sales figures would suggest it now does, dropping the Wii sku to a still respectable 2nd place).
Most of the budget each year is for the licenses, which aren't platform specific. They have a ready-made game engine on the Wii, a formula that doesn't change each year, a large base of loyal casual customers, and the selling power to get a Wii release on to retailer shelves even in 2019.
As long as it keeps pushing a quarter of a million copies each year in North America and Europe, I suspect Ubisoft will be happy to keep refreshing the song lineup and producing a Wii version. It wouldn't shock me even to see a slight uptick in sales this year on the Wii if the added sales from Wii U owners left without a native option (Last year pushed 100,000 copies on Wii U, I believe I read) compensate for attrition on the Wii as customers tire of the formula, retire their console, or shift to buying for another platform.
@Galrand64 Nintendo and Microsoft seem to want to portray themselves as almost allies of a sort. Assuming that relationship continues, I wouldn't discount Rare games if a N64 Mini happens in the next few years (Nintendo has said they have no plans, but that doesn't mean it won't change). And that right there would take care of the major non-Nintendo highlights for many people.
Of course, Goldeneye might not be a shoe-in since they'd still need the movie license. But even that might not be as difficult as it has been in the past. We're fast approaching 10 years since the last James Bond videogame was released. There's no exclusivity deal with a videogame publisher these days that would have to be worked around like back in the Xbox Live Arcade era when Activision had it. Just the movie studio itself would have to write off on it (MGM, I think?).
@carmudgeon No, Hyperkin themselves support the playing of rom images on the Retron '77.
As for the rest, I'm not sure what the point is supposed to be. How does the fact that the Stella team has done a lot of work to enable users to run the latest and greatest version of Stella on the Retron '77 when Hyperkin couldn't be bothered to do the same, defeat what I said?
The point remains that if this is the emulation based machine it surely will be, and if Hyperkin (Or an outside source) enables the playing of N64 rom images off the system's internal SD card, it won't matter that it can't interact with an Everdrive 64.
I suspect you're not a Hyperkin fan and possibly misconstrued my original post as me defending them. But rest assured I'm no fan and I don't think this has a chance of being worthwhile.
@KennyBania That doesn't mean much. Retron '77 can play rom images off the internal SD card for instance. Don't need a SD multicart if the system itself directly supports the playing of rom images.
I'm sure I'll be out of luck, but I wish I could play this on there.
MAME doesn't do the backdrop justice. It's luminescent and isn't just flat cardboard. There's different pieces to it to provide depth, such as the planet surface.
@Stocksy Rare Replay would be a pretty huge project for the Switch. Don't think it's doable within financial reason.
All the Xbox 360 titles in it (including all of the Banjo content) had compatibility enabled via the Xbox One's backwards compatibility team. They weren't ported by hand and instead were made possible by Microsoft's BC initiative.
Going off memory of Digital Foundry videos, the 360 cpu instructions were ran through some program Microsoft invested a ton of resources into to essentially automatically translate the 360's PowerPC code to 64-bit x86 code. That's then run natively on the Xbox One's cpu, which is why you download a recompiled game whenever you insert a compatible 360 disc rather than playing it directly off the disc (Only the unchanged gpu instructions are ran via traditional software emulation).
@NintendoFan4Lyf The Neo Geo well seems to have ran dry for Hamster. Since the ACA Neo Geo line started, we've never had a time until now when there weren't confirmed additions planned.
So barring a few new licensing deals to bring a handful of addition Neo Geo games to the NS/XB1/PS4/PC (I'd personally love to get Neo Drift Out), I'd say it's finished.
It's pretty amazing what Hamster did though after failures like the Neo Geo Station stopping after 6 or 7 releases on the PSP and PS3. A large proportion of the library made it out thanks to Hamster with solid emulation, lots of options, and a fairly reasonable price point.
I figured when it started that it would die a quick death and not even approach the sizable amount on the Wii Virtual Console. Yet instead it far surpassed it.
The anti-Arcade Archives rhetoric here in the NintendoLife comments section is always good for a few laughs.
Sad that some of you can't see that this program is one of the best things the Nintendo Switch has going for it. It has brought many great games to the system, including Solomon's Key when it arrives.
I've played many hours on it in Tecmo Classic Arcade for the original Xbox. It isn't needless trash like some of you that have never even played it are portraying it as.
Outrun 2019 was great. A very good futuristic racer that still holds up today. It also has some impressive graphical effects for the Genesis like overhead highways.
A shame this is absent in the west. Not a single Sega racing game is set to be included, which is one of the few gaping holes in the lineup.
I wonder if they'll even localize and release it here if it happens? Still waiting on Disaster Report 4 to appear, which at this point I doubt will be happening.
Contra - Arcade (US/JP)
Super Contra - Arcade (US/JP)
Contra - NES/FAMICOM (US/JP)
Super C - NES/FAMICOM (US/JP)
Contra III (US/JP/EURO)
Contra Hard Corps (US/JP/EURO)
Operation C (US/JP)
While I'm not shocked not to see the work done to include Contra 4 here (Or the mobile game I'm seeing mentioned above) and I'm optimistic Contra Rebirth is being held back for another collection of those, why not at least include Contra Force (NES) or the interesting and often impressive Game Boy conversion of Contra III to maintain the 8 game per collection count?
Regional variants are great and it's nice to see them here, including the modified PAL versions, but there's still just seven games here at the end of the day. We've been led to believe these will include 8 games, including the Contra collection.
Hope they announce the ability to string courses together by the player, so fan-made games can be created and uploaded.
Other than that, only minor things on my wishlist are missing so far such as the ability to download Wii U/3DS courses and play them in SMM2, or the ability for situations with two Switch systems to connect them wirelessly to enable touch screen course creation on one while also displaying the picture on a television screen with the other (The one advantage Super Mario Maker on the Wii U has, especially for those that want to stream).
And it's minor, but I find it disappointing that course upload is locked behind the paywall. I would think online multiplayer would be enough of a hook without putting a major feature carried over from the original behind an online subscription.
Don't really see why this was newsworthy when the reveal trailer already told us this, but great none the less.
Not only does it look like a fun style for Super Mario Maker 2, but hopefully the attention Nintendo is putting into this foretells news of a Super Mario 3D World port soon.
What better way to sell that and remind people how great of a game it was, than what Nintendo's doing with Super Mario Maker 2?
I'm not aware of any DSP-1b equipped Pilotwings cartridges.
This behavior on real hardware didn't become known, at least in the circles I visit, until the Super Powerpak and Super Everdrive with their optional DSP-1 mount arrived.
Then someone that just happened to have cannibalized a later cartridge and had thus popped in a DSP-1b, noticed this with the community soon piecing together why it was happening.
What's funny is when they move on to SNES games, we'll see the same comments then as well, from the same exact people whining in here that they're releasing NES games instead of SNES games.
For those desperate for SNES games, why didn't you just buy a SNES Classic Edition? Ignoring the well established homebrew community that makes it so easy to expand the game list, 75% of what will be rolled out here eventually for SNES content is already there anyways out of the box.
It even includes a pair of excellent SNES style controllers. Equivalent wireless versions for the Switch if the NES experience tells us anything will cost you at Nintendo.com pretty much exactly what an entire SNES Classic Edition system was priced at until its recent discontinuance.
@Tempestryke Don't you own any original N64 controllers? The d-pad is excellent and isn't the failure point on them. Well worth keeping around for d-pad games, even if it's retired from regular use due to a worn out analog stick.
That said, the excellent Retro Fighters controller from a year or so back has a d-pad positioned in a useful place. Sounds like it's the better option for you.
Let's take the 3DS XL for an example. Lots of rumors were flying in the press in early June of 2012, but Nintendo announces that it's speculation. Then in mid June after E3 had came and went with no announcement, Miyamoto told IGN that he was satisfied with the current 3DS and didn't think there would be revisions done. Then on June 21st, the 3DS XL was officially announced in a Nintendo Direct broadcast.
Or how about the DS Lite. Nintendo shoots it down in early January of 2006 by stating they have no plans for a DS revision, and then announces it at the end of the month.
Frankly, if they're bothering to address the speculation, I believe it's happening. Nintendo doesn't bother addressing unfounded speculation.
Really glad to see this. Was just trying it in the latest build of MAME and while it's not far off, there were some annoying issues that made it unplayable (A shaky camera, for the big one).
Someone in the other news piece about the Sega Genesis Mini asked what the big deal was about M2 being involved. All one has to do is post this link, in my opinion.
Any other developer would've stopped with just getting the game running. M2 instead multiplied that feat by 8 times on a single Switch system. It rather says it all for why M2 is special.
@opeter They're a very talented developer in Japan that is famous for emulating and porting classic games for a variety of different publishers, often with lots of bells and whistles added.
For instance on the 3DS and Switch where practical, arcade games in the Sega 3D Classics/Sega Ages line have their perspective widened to 16:9 by M2. And not by stretching and distorting the picture or by cropping and zooming in on a 4:3 picture, but by actually enlarging the view on the sides of the screen.
Obviously isn't worth doing for every game. A puzzle game for instance like Columns can't be expanded in a useful manner, so a static border such as the bezel artwork surrounding an arcade monitor is used to fill the empty space on the sides of the screen. But in games like Outrun, they're now true widescreen thanks to M2.
4:3 Outrun
16:9 Outrun
Just one of the many ways M2 goes above and beyond with each project they do, rather than settling for good enough.
@merlot This is no sim. It's a simcade at best and not a very even one at that with the game leaning heavily towards the arcade side of the spectrum rather than the simulation side. Digital throttle/braking controls are a non-issue here.
@Wavey84 I assume the 240p test suite is telling me my total input lag on my Super NT on my HDTV, since I get very close to 0 when running the same test on my original Super Nintendo connected via HD Retrovision cables to my CRT.
The Super NT itself has no inherent input lag, but some some of those 5ms will be from the controller adapter I've been using on my Super NT. It's a Classic Controller to SNES adapter from Ralphnet with a SNES Classic Edition gamepad plugged in.
It has to have some inherent latency since it's not just a simple wiring conversion like something such as a SNES to NES adapter would be.
Contrary to my earlier comment, I'd be tempted if it's 80's Overdrive. I like sprite scaling racers and this one looked promising (And I haven't yet hit the buy button to download it).
@RupeeClock I doubt it, Nintendo just recently released a new selection of Nintendo Selects releases for instance. Hard to imagine if they had ~5,000 Switch cartridges they were eager to clear out, that they wouldn't of just printed a few more copies of each of those.
I imagine we'll be seeing reprints for a while to come. New releases are drying up, but there will still be demand for past hits that Nintendo will be happy to meet as long as 3DS hardware remains widely stocked.
I would not be shocked to see one last round of Nintendo Selects next spring for instance. At least here in North America, there are certainly some strong 1st party candidates like Mario Kart 7 left that have yet to be issued as a Nintendo Select title.
And I'm sure a solid amount of 3DS hardware will be sold this Christmas for perhaps the last true holiday season for the platform. So ~March 2020 will be the perfect time for some attractive budget choices to pop up just as those gamers look for something new to feed their recent 3DS acquisition/gift.
Already have an adequate version of Shinobi (Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection) and a great version of Wonder Boy in Monster Land thanks to M2 on last-gen consoles. And the Analogue Mega SG defeats the point of buying Herzog Zweil and Inchidant R doesn't interest me.
The question mark is Fantasy Zone. I don't really need another port of it with M2's PS2 conversion downloaded to my PS3, but if it can run in widescreen like M2's Fantasy Zone II creation running on System 16 arcade hardware did on the 3DS Sega 3D Classics Collection, I imagine I'll bite.
I hope Turbo Outrun is in the next batch. Still sore that Sega never brought the last batch of 3D Classics releases out in the West.

@huyi No, it's still available on PSN. It's on sale right now for $7 (Game only) or $16 or so for the game with all the DLC.
Goes on sale about once a month or so for some reason there, while the DLC never goes on sale on Xbox Live.

Re: It's Official, The New Game Style In Super Mario Maker 2 Is Based On 3D World
Don't really see why this was newsworthy when the reveal trailer already told us this, but great none the less.
Re: Random: The Captivating Mystery Of Pilotwings’ Crashing Plane
I'm not aware of any DSP-1b equipped Pilotwings cartridges.
This behavior on real hardware didn't become known, at least in the circles I visit, until the Super Powerpak and Super Everdrive with their optional DSP-1 mount arrived.
Then someone that just happened to have cannibalized a later cartridge and had thus popped in a DSP-1b, noticed this with the community soon piecing together why it was happening.
Re: Random: Game Boy Classic Super Mario Land Gets A Fan-Made DX Update
Don't like the Mario sprite.
Re: Nintendo's Upcoming Switch Online NES Titles Include Donkey Kong Jr., VS. Excitebike And Clu Clu Land
Re: Hardware Review: Retro-Bit Tribute64 - A Fine N64 Controller, And Perfect For Smash On Switch
Re: Nintendo Has "No Plans" To Announce New Hardware At E3
Nintendo has done this before.
Re: Sega Ages Virtua Racing Speeds Onto The Japanese eShop Next Week
Really glad to see this. Was just trying it in the latest build of MAME and while it's not far off, there were some annoying issues that made it unplayable (A shaky camera, for the big one).
Someone in the other news piece about the Sega Genesis Mini asked what the big deal was about M2 being involved. All one has to do is post this link, in my opinion.
http://images.nintendolife.com/390f88e7c4006/virtua-racer-8.original.jpg
Any other developer would've stopped with just getting the game running. M2 instead multiplied that feat by 8 times on a single Switch system. It rather says it all for why M2 is special.
Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Launches Worldwide This September, 10 More Games Revealed Today

Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Launches Worldwide This September, 10 More Games Revealed Today
@retro_player_22 There's no way this is going without a franchise like Golden Axe. They've only announced half the lineup so far.
Re: Capcom's Big Announcement Is A Plug-And-Play Arcade Stick Packed With Classic Games
I'll buy a console collection, but not in the market for a $200 plug and play.
Re: GRID Autosport Might Be Receiving A Retail Release On The Switch
@merlot This is no sim. It's a simcade at best and not a very even one at that with the game leaning heavily towards the arcade side of the spectrum rather than the simulation side. Digital throttle/braking controls are a non-issue here.
Re: GRID Autosport Might Be Receiving A Retail Release On The Switch
Codemasters isn't a big Nintendo supporter, so I assume that's why so many figured this arcade racer would be a mere digital release.
Re: Rumour: Persona 5, Metroid Prime Trilogy And A Link To The Past Are Switch-Bound According To Best Buy
I'd love to see A Link to the Past remade and bundled with a HD port of A Link Between Worlds.
Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Launches Worldwide This September
Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Launches Worldwide This September
@Wavey84 I get 5ms on my HDTV when running the input lag test on my Super NT via the 240p test suite.
Re: Limited Run Games Is Working On A 3DS Physical Release
Re: Limited Run Games Is Working On A 3DS Physical Release
Only one I'd care about is Sega 3D Classics Collection Volumes 1 or 3.
Re: Six More Sega Ages Games Announced For Nintendo Switch
Count me in for G-LOC.
