People love to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with GameCube-style controllers, and that's a fact that hasn't been lost on third-party peripheral makers. Exlene is one such manufacturer, and it has come up with two GameCube-style pads for Switch that aim to scratch that itch for people who are in the market for a decent facsimile of Nintendo's famous pad.
Exlene has two pads on offer: a wired version (which comes with a 3.5mm audio jack so you can listen to in-game audio via the pad itself) and a wireless version (which lacks the audio jack but obviously has an internal battery).
Both pads feel pretty similar to the real thing, but there are some additions to note. There are bumpers on both the left and right side of the pad (the original GameCube controller only has one on the right-hand side) but they're confusingly labelled. You also get a Home and Screenshot button, because this is a Switch pad after all. But that's not all; you also get motion control built-in. Rumble is also included (but that was on the GameCube pad anyway).
It's worth noting that the D-Pad on the wired version is thinner than the one on the wireless controller; we have no idea why this is the case, but we found the D-Pad on the wireless version to be more comfortable to use over longer periods of time. The C-Stick on both pads is bigger than it is on the original GameCube pad, which is a good thing if you ask us. Oh, and both pads can be used with other systems, which is a bonus – but not the original GameCube.
Both of these pads are pretty decent, and they're priced reasonably, too. But with so many other options on the market already, we're not sure Exlene's pads are going to get much attention – especially as they lack the attractive packaging and official licence of PowerA's GameCube controllers. Still, if you're on the lookout for a decent pad in this style, you could certainly do a lot worse.

I like how they are offering a proper wireless option, something long overdue.
I use the wired one. I've used it for about a year now with no problems. Really good quality.
The wireless one seems like a great value with the addition of rechargeable batteries and rumble compared to the PowerA controller I have. Sure you have to use a USB dongle that isn't required on the PowerA model, but still not a bad alternative given the price and features.
Thank you for saying "zee" instead of "zed." Another great quality that separates you from Alex.
@abbyhitter Pretty sure that just means he must be an American lol
After a look at the Amazon page they appear to be cheaply made and you also have to do several steps to get it to connect to the Switch according to the listing.
I prefer OEM for many reasons or a good quality third party if available.
Is Nintendo ever going to rerelease those GameCube adapters for Switch?
I've never quite understood the obsession with the gamecube controller, it's ok. Personally in my opinion the pro controller is one of the best nintendo controllers I've played on in a long time. I'm really hoping for some more cool options for it. I really love my Xenoblade Chronicles 2 one.
Are the triggers analogue or digital?
@Spanjard
They so, actually. At least in Japan. Amazon Japan is taking preorders right now and they will Shop worldwide in early January. They also take preorders for the original GameCube Controller for the Switch which is limited to one per customer. Compared to the price for EXLENE controller I think it's worth to think about an import.
But I hope Nintendo Europe will also restock controllers and adapters soon.
I don't get these interest for GameCube controller, it's nice that there's option for them but using them on Switch was never a great experience (unless you only want it for Smash Ultimate) for majority of its game. The Switch Pro controllers and 8Bitdo brand of controllers already covers every needs we want with modern and retro gaming on Switch.
@Tisteg80 The day that happens is when I buy smash ultimate. Thanks for update.
@damo the link to power a doesn’t actually go to the GameCube power a one - it goes to the character ones.
Might as well buy a original one at those prices.
@Spanjard GC adapters for Switch are widely available...
@beazlen1 Not the official ones, which is what I was asking about.
@ReaperExTenebris meh, I think the GC controller had some good reasons to use it even nowadays and not only for Smash.
I use an emulator on my pc to play gc games and the way the buttons are organized on the GC-controllers is still printed inside my head even after all those years. And I prefer it that way.
Even though I play PS4 games almost daily and also use the Pro Controller 90% of the time when playing Switch games.
Also why do some people want this “trend” to die out? There are many controllers on the market for the Switch and it is not like Nintendo or other third parties only make GC-style controllers.
Having more options is always better. They do not harm you.
@abbyhitter ‘thankyou’ for pronouncing it as an American would? It’s ‘zed’ in other countries.
@retro_player_22 You mention ‘already cover every need’... well... no..... many people like the Gamecube controller... so there’s a need right there that’s not covered Personally, I really enjoy the feel of the GC controller, not much else like it.
@abbyhitter “I, as an American, would like to extend my thanks to you, a fellow American, for using standard American English. This is another factor that separates you from that English presenter, who has a suspicious habit of speaking English as if we were from England. I’m beginning to suspect he may not in fact be a real American.”
What a bunch of self-congratulatory horse fluff.
I watched the video this morning and my impression was "What makes them special? Apparently nothing in particular, they are just decent 3rd party controllers."
I've got 4 sets of joycons and 4 pro controllers and one of the excellent 8BitDo controllers. I am more than good on controllers.
Wait, I mean no offense to anyone, but why would “Z” be pronounced “zed”?! LOL
I’m gonna google this.
Update: ................... This is like when I found out what English “chips” were.
I think the Gamecube truly was a great controller, but I like the Pro Controller even more. I've never felt so comfortable with a controller. The one thing the GC controller did better was analog triggers, but since no Switch games utilize analog triggers it's a fairly pointless feature.
I'm certainly going to look for another Pro at some point. They are expensive, but worth every penny in my opinion.
Not to say this looks bad, it actually looks very nice and I appreciate all the features. But I'll stick with the PC.
@gloom You clearly didn't live near the Canadian border growing up if that pronunciation surprises you.
As an American kid not far from Canada, I watched a lot of Canadian children's programming in the 1980's and 90's like Mr. Dressup.
"What makes them so special?"
Nice clickbait
@Atariboy Breaking an internet rule here and giving away my location, but I actually live in Minnesota near the Canadian border. Never heard it! haha
Will there be a hardware review for the Hori split pad Daemon X Machina controllers?
I still dont get the gamecube controller/smash thing, I found the C stick always got in my way, and the analogue shoulder buttons were just annoying when you wanted to press them quickly.
But ah well.
@Bunkerneath To each his own I suppose. I merely want one so that I can have more people play with me and not necessarily for me. I've challenged a lot of people to smash only to be shut down for lack of Gamecube Controllers.
@ReaperExTenebris the thing I do not understand is why it is holding Smash players back. Why would it hold them back?
The controller has it flaws yeah, like the (cheapish) C-stick and small D-pad but it seems the majority of the people who like GC-C are content with it the reason being the layout of the ABXY buttons.
Well let us agree to disagree
