Revealed as part of yesterday's Super Mario Maker 2 Direct - which you can watch again right here - was the Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational 2019.
Despite the fact that the game won't even be released by this point, the event will be taking place on 8th June - just days before E3 kicks off. It'll see four members of the Super Mario Maker community competing in a variety of crazy Mario courses designed within the new game by Nintendo's Treehouse Team. If you're excited about the game's release and are hoping to see more, this event could well serve as your next fix.
The invitation will open up the festivities at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on that day, starting at 11am PT, and will be followed by the Splatoon 2 World Championship 2019 and the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate World Championship 3v3 2019. You'll be able to sit back and watch all of the action from the comfort of your own home, or if you live close enough, you could even try to gain free entry by queueing up on the day.

I am so up for this game now that I found out there was a story mode with 100 levels made by Nintendo
It's strange that they didn't mention this in the Nintendo UK Twitch Stream, it's not as though UK viewers wouldn't want to tune in.
Sounds like a fun pre-E3 showing! I'll tune in for sure, even if only as a side-distraction.
Great that all the tournaments are happen before e3. As i can only hope this mesns they got more to tell us then the previous year
I think Nintendo did this for the original Super Mario Maker on Wii U. I remember there was some kind of tournament for the game. Regardless this will be fun to watch! Definitely saving up for those Nintendo Switch Online game vouchers to pick up Super Mario Maker 2 & Animal Crossing Switch (eventually) digitally!
Hope they announce the ability to string courses together by the player, so fan-made games can be created and uploaded.
Other than that, only minor things on my wishlist are missing so far such as the ability to download Wii U/3DS courses and play them in SMM2, or the ability for situations with two Switch systems to connect them wirelessly to enable touch screen course creation on one while also displaying the picture on a television screen with the other (The one advantage Super Mario Maker on the Wii U has, especially for those that want to stream).
And it's minor, but I find it disappointing that course upload is locked behind the paywall. I would think online multiplayer would be enough of a hook without putting a major feature carried over from the original behind an online subscription.
I went to the Smash Invitational in person last year, no thanks. I got there by 2:30 AM last year, and got in the theater by 12:00 PM and left around 4:00 PM. I had a blast, but the fact that we had to stand the whole time, both outside in line and inside the theater, really killed my feet. They removed all chairs inside the theater to allow more people inside, so everyone had to stand unless you got a V.I.P. seat. I really hope they accommodate more people's needs this time around, I loved being a part of Ultimate's big reveal but it would be nice if Nintendo treated us consumers more like people and less like props.
