We're big fans of EON here at Nintendo Life. The company has already produced some amazing GameCube HDMI adapters in the form of the GCHD and GCHD Mk II, both of which harness the console's digital output to give a crisp picture without the need for pesky internal modification.
However, for its next trick, EON has taken things up a notch. The Super 64 brings HDMI output to the GameCube's forerunner, the Nintendo 64, a feat which is made a whole lot harder thanks to the fact that the console has no digital output of any kind.

Like the GCHD, the Super 64 is a plug-and-play solution which takes the console's S-Video signal and upscales it to zero-lag 480p, and requires no internal hardware modification to run – you simply pop it into the AV port of the N64 and you're away. The unit has a robust design and even comes with a little 'foot' on the back which ensures that it remains stable when it's sticking out the back of your console.

The Super 64 has two modes – normal and 'slick' – and toggling between them is a simple button press away; there's a tiny button on the side of the unit for this purpose. Normal mode gives you crisp and chunky pixels, while slick mode smoothes off the edges to present an image that is arguably closer to what you might remember from back in the day.
Compared to what the N64 is capable of outputting to your HD TV over composite AV – arguably the most common way we connected our machines back in the day – the difference is like night and day. Everything looks sharper and clearer, and the Super 64 maintains the aspect ratio too, so you don't have to worry about messing around with your TV remote to get the right picture. Compared to S-Video the gulf is less pronounced, but is still noticeable.
However, at $150 it's a pricey bit of kit, and arguably falls well short of the kind of quality you get from an internal mod, like the UltraHDMI mod or an RGB mod running through an Open Source Scan Converter. Of course, both of those options require you to locate someone who can install the mod for you (if you're not brave or knowledgeable enough yourself to perform the surgery), which will be a stumbling block for some.
Also, it's worth noting that while this is a solid solution if you've only got access to a high def TV in your household, you may find that you prefer the way your N64 looks on an old-fashioned CRT set; we certainly felt that way when playing Banjo-Kazooie for this review, but that could just be nostalgia kicking in. It's also worth noting that the Super 64 will only work on NTSC N64 consoles; if you own a PAL system, then you're out of luck.
Not everyone is going to want to have their console opened up for an internal mod of course, so that does make the Super 64 a little more attractive, even if the price difference isn't all that large between the two. It's unquestionably a massive step up from the composite picture you get when you hook the machine up to a modern TV, and, in some cases, it may be your only option for playing your N64 on such a set – one of the TVs we used in this test stubbornly refused to recognise the composite signal from our console at all.
Ultimately, while the Super 64 may not be the best way to get HD visuals out of your N64, it's effortlessly the most elegant and hassle-free.

S-video to hdmi adapter/upscaler
Sorry PAL
It's has almost the same quality as that $30 Hyperkin N64 HDMI cable just without the options. I'll passed.
I don’t know if it’s worth it but my Switch was supposed to arrive today from repairs but is delayed until Monday.
Nooooooooooooo!!!

I have the ultahdmi mod and I haven't looked back since. You may as well buy the mod instead of spending 150 usd + tax on an adaptor.
I suppose there’s only so much it can do with S video and an analogue signal. The GC is unique in that it has a digital output right on the back ready to use, I don’t think any other console from that generation or prior had that did it? Nintendo forward thinking for once!
I think this is a great idea, being plug and play and providing an easy way to hook your N64 to a modern TV with a relatively decent output, but the price is just too high. I’d rather pay the extra and do it properly, such as with an HDMI mod.
£50 tops for this, for what it is.
@Aslanmagic Nooooooooooooooo.com
I bought Pikachu N64 back in the day for less than that. Huge discount cause everyone wanted Playstation
That’s more than a rgb mod
I could never in a million years justify spending $150 for slightly better visuals on an awesome, but sadly aging console. That is just beyond me.
So glad I didn't buy this money grab mediocre product. The fact they didn't release any footage outside of their obviously enhanced trailer shows they don't even believe in it.
Why's everyone talking rubbish over s-video? My only complaint and reason I definitely WON'T be picking up this product is price. £150 is WAY too rich for my blood.
@1UP_MARIO totally agree.
@Pazuzu666 just buy a s-video to HDMI adapter with upscaling. There ten times cheaper.
The answer is no it's not worth it.
I have all the N64 games I want - Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wave Race, 1080, Pokemon Snap, Mario Kart 64, Yoshi's Story, Star Fox 64, F-Zero, SSB 64, Paper Mario - all downloaded on to my Wii VC.
I play them with a Gamecube wavebird controller with component cables at 480P and I have no desire to ever go back to a real N64 with its 240P output even with the best scaler out there, it just looks too lo-fi these days
Ultra HD mod on my PAL system. Happy with it. Guy in Ireland supplies it through another guy in Greece.
Yes it's MEGA expensive, but, to he, it's worth it.
Probably worth it if you’re really into playing the N64 if it avoids introducing lag like other options will. But the cost of a system/this adaptor/the games I want is too much for me these days. Wii U plus Raphnet Adaptor plus Wii Remote plus genuine N64 Controller is good enough for me.
Eh I don’t really need this. I have an HD tv that plays old games like PlayStation 1 games. If I was able to buy an N64, I could just get composite cables, and hook them up. Even though the quality won’t be like the Super 64.
I will take an emulator with HD up scaling over this, N64 just doesn't look good on anything but a CRT, and same goes for Playstation 1.
Not as good as Ultra HDMI, that's all I needed to know. It's a pass from me
It's weird that they would release this at that price when a Retrotink 2x will scale S-video to HDMI for $100 and works with any console and Hyperkin has a $30 N64 S-video to HDMI cable too.
I want 2 of them. They say they are working on the pal version. Otherwise I will buy an ntsc N64 and this adapter.
Wow no way, slick mode is awesome. I need this thing. Please Eon release the pal version as soon as you can!
Based on what I've seen today in videos, if you want to spend that kind of money, get a Retro Link for a little less that gives you virtually the same quality, but allows you to plug in any composite/component/S-Video console!
I played my N64 on a Houangyang 13” color tv I got for Christmas that never died. I’ve hooked up old consoles via s-video to hd tv’s and it’s fine. You’re kidding yourself if you honestly want anything more. As long as the entire picture is on screen and there is no input lag, I’m good to go.
@Aslanmagic if you don't mind, what happened to your switch??
@Rpg-lover No problem...the microSD reader stopped working so I could only use the internal storage
@Aslanmagic uhh that's sad, but how did it happen??
@Rpg-lover no idea! My family and I were traveling on vacation and I was taking a break from driving. I played Cuphead for a bit and stopped to rest my eyes. When I started again I got an error message. No idea what happened. I’ve been enjoying playing on the Switch these days so it’s a bit a bummer. I was gone on a youth gathering trip for a few days recently and had no time to play so somewhat good timing I guess for it to happen.
@Aslanmagic okay, well hopefully it will be fixed up! So you can continue your gaming.
Nothing about how it performs on the Super Nintendo and GameCube? Not that anyone is going to be buying this for those when better (And cheaper) options exist, but someone that invests in one for their N64 might not mind having it pull double duty.
It should work since the video port is the same and they all support the same S-Video cables (And N64 can do both 240p and 480i, so they won't be throwing a resolution this doesn't know what to do with).
@Rpg-lover thanks! My favorite rpg of all-time is Lunar the Silver Star
@Aslanmagic wow, loved that game way back on PlayStation one.
@Aslanmagic hoping for a remake, enjoyed it more than crono trigger.
@Rpg-lover Yes, please! I loved the music, the story, everything! The first time I played it was a rental from Blockbuster on Sega CD.
Unfortunately, this device just doesn't seem worth it. If I'm going to pay that much, I might as well go the rest of the way and get an ultra HDMI mod. Considering I still have an N64 hooked up to a CRT, I'm just going to patiently wait for a good hardware clone. I would love to see Analog release an FPGA N64.
The N64 is still an amazing console with many of the best games ever made. As much as I love BoTW and SMO, SM64 and OoT remain my favorite entries. There's nothing like playing them on original hardware. I would still love to see these and other N64 titles ported over to Switch.
Absolutely NOT.
If you're going to pay that much, better of just getting the UltraHDMI for a true set of video and audio choices to exploit with a true clearly glaringly obvious boost in quality of the games. That mod makes the system really shine much like N64 on PC emulation, but this EON (yet again for the) overpriced kit does a minimal job for too much dough. As other said, hyperkin typically known for trash, put a quality enough cord out that can do this for a fraction of the price.
EON is a high quality company that makes excellent products. You get what you pay for. But that said, it is expensive. You're not just getting the product, you're avoiding the hassle of having to open up and mod your console or paying someone to do it for your.
@Aslanmagic oh, the story was the best part. Plus the music of course. I never let the graphics fool me not to love the game. Was superb.
@readyletsgo hey i live in greece and i'm interested for the ultra hdmi mod thingy on the n64, can you dm me where i can find on the web the guy from greece who is doing all the modding? )) [btw im new here if this site don't have dms err can you perhaps give some info here??] thanks
@Dirty0814 no, thanks. Lag.
At that price, I'd pair S-video cables with one of these instead - https://youtu.be/L9fNL-FGbkk It is essentially the same solution, with 240p pass through as an option, and support for many more consoles via expanded support for Composite and YPbPr.
$150 for that sh!t? H3ll nah!
@Pazuzu666 you realize older systems all have some kind of lag? Also if you get a quality adapter there is literally no change in lag.
Nah just wait for Nintendo to make N64 mini's, could still happen unless N64 games turn up on the Switch e-shop.
Sounds like a good option for me. I found my N64 a couple of months ago when I was cleaning our attic, and I don’t have enough knowledge to do one of those mods myself.
I’m willing to pay for the ease of use, to be able to hook my N64 to my TV.
Problem here is that some will be fixed for graphics but if the graphics chipset is the same the hardware can only so do much. Not til a remastered game comes out will this graphics be fixed.
@Legacysmikey Oldskoolconsoles
Ill stick to using my crts
I can't wait! I pre-ordered mine and it should be here next week. I have been using a quality s-video cable and a HDMI Etekcity upscaler to connect my N64 to my HD TV and the results have been really good. I got my upscaler from Amazon back in 2013 and it still works perfectly. Fortunately for me this upscaler also has an HDMI in and it has the ability to further clean up the image and combined with the Super 64 I know I will be happy with the results. I was thinking about throwing on a mClassic adapter on it but that might come later. I'm not made of money after all. It is a great time to be a N64 fan!
What a ripoff. I bought a HDMI converter at Office Depot for $19.99 that works great.
@Doktor-Mandrake Nice one! What CRTs do you have?
This is "arguably" too many of the aforementioned.
I went and spent the money to get the Ultra HDMI mod. It's absolutely gorgeous and I don't regret it but $410 for a premodded system is a lot to swallow. I was upscaling N64 with S-Video through a Framemeister and it was not giving me the results I wanted. The Ultra HDMI mod is marvelous on its own but the fact that it undoes the damage that the hardware antialiasing does to the image makes it the best option for people who want the highest quality.
Although with the Super 64 there is the benefit of just being able to plug it in and have it work and output the best quality video the system's capable of without a mod. I guess it's up to you if that's worth $150. Make sure to use a Funtastic console though because those have better S-Video encoders.
I just rescued a massive CRT TV from a school, I'm good
I do think is Link's Awaking is any indications that the Mario franchise will be remastered for Switch. So I will hold off going retro for the time being.
@Erchitu I hear they are working on a PAL version right now.
@MakeMyBiscuit Yes I know. I am constantly updated via twitter. I hope it will come out soon. Can't wait, because I have a lot of games on the 64 that I want to play.
I'm sorry, but get the hell out of here with that $150 price tag. What the actual hell? I can't wait for someone to break out/source the component prices so we know how much this costs to manufacture. $150... get bent. Just pick up a Retrotink 2X for $50 less... a bit of tech that actually does this right and has more functionality. Or at that price point, learn how to/get some help with the proper mod that does go right to the digital signal before it's converted to analogue for output. Then you get real 480.
@Luna_110 pick up a Retrotink 2X. $50 less, does the same job only done right and has more options/functionality. It's a stand alone device and you can use it with other systems too.
@Tsusasi
Thanks!
I had no idea it existed, I'll check it out.
Just got my Super64 in the mail today and WOW! I already had pretty good picture quality coming from my N64 from using a S-video cable to an HDMI upscaler but using that same upscaler with the Super64 really makes the most out of what the Super64 has to offer especially when used with "slick" mode. The most immediate difference I saw was on the title screen of Mario Kart 64. With "slick mode" on and upscaled to 1080p via my upscaler and the Super64, Mario Kart 64 looks like an HD remaster. Really incredible stuff. So good in fact I don't think I will fork over the extra cash for the mClassic. If you have or are looking to get a Super64 pair it up with an HDMI upscaler which is much less than the price of the mClassic or mCables for some really amazing results. Also I did not notice any lag. Even a quality upscaler is much less than the price of the mCables. Also if you buy from Castlemania Games and use the code "ADAM" you should get 10% off of the price which really helps and there is no tax and free shipping. The code worked for me which made the Super64 $135 again with no tax and free shipping. I hope that helps.
