The Danganronpa Collection is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year, on the 3rd of December, but only one part of it is Switch-exclusive: Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, an expanded standalone version of the board minigame "Ultimate Talent Development Plan" in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
Ultimate Summer Camp is set in an alternate universe where all the characters from the various Danganronpa games live in relative harmony on an island summer camp. They'll need to find ten "Hope Shards" in order to return home, which they can do by playing a Mario Party-esque board game where the squares you can land on include things like "Growth", "Battle", "Event", and "Friendship".
In Spike Chunsoft's latest blog, the details of Ultimate Summer Camp have been outlined a little more since the E3 announcement, and that includes the new microtransactions, described as follows (emphasis ours):
"Spend your Monocoins and Monomicoins at the MonoMono Machines in the School Store for a chance to pull new characters and items. The three types of MonoMono Machines have different drop rates and require machine-specific coins.
You will gain a greater advantage as you obtain new characters and items, so don't hesitate to use up your coins as they come in.
For example, the MonoMono Yachine is more likely to grant swimsuit SR cards, while the Golden MonoMono Machine only contains high-rarity cards.
Don't worry about saving coins--keep spending them to fill out your roster and inventory!
All content such as characters, character upgrade cards, and items can be unlocked by playing the game. All characters and character upgrade cards can also be purchased through the MonoMono Machines at the School Store with real-world money."
In short, there is the option in-game to spend your real money on "Monocoins" and "Monomicoins", which can be used in a gacha machine to buy new cards, outfits, items, and character upgrades. However, the coins can also be earned by playing the game.
Danganronpa Decadence is available for pre-order now as a set for $59.99, and the $100 Collector's Edition can be found on Spike Chunsoft's website. Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp will cost $19.99 / £17.99 as a standalone game.
Does the addition of microtransactions put you off playing the new Danganronpa game, or are you perfectly happy to play Ultimate Summer Camp as-is? Let us know in the comments.

...Well, I was thinking of actually looking at this because board game, even though I'm not into the series. But...yeah, I don't know now, VERY FEW games have the gacha mechanic and I'm fine with it. But a lot of them are just...terrible. Especially when microtransactions are involved.
The main games have it as well, just not able to be bought with real money. Kinda tacky.
Meh. Wasn’t that excited about the board game anyways. The three mainline games though! Those are gonna be amazing on switch!
Judging by the base minigame for this game from V3 and the added micro transactions to skip stuff I’m willing to bet that this mode is gonna be pretty boring and tedious and not an improvement from V3 at all
Well, at least I can enjoy ¾ of Danganronpa Decadence...
My thing is, if the game was free to play, microtransactions do not bother me. But any game that is a full price game, I refuse to spend more on with this type of mechanic built in.
I read the sub title as "Spike Chunsoft confirms on the bog".
The has been a PSA. Goodnight all.
HEY NOW! I recognize that font in the upper-left of most of those photos! Looks like Wii Sports, right? I understand Spike Chunsoft worked on Wii Play: Motion but it looks ripped right out of Wii Sports (not a bad thing)
Micro transactions really ruin the experience but danganrapa is still cool
Ps. I can't spell daganrapa
Okay, avoid like the plague, got it.
@SoIDecidedTo this game Ultimate Summer Camp is $20 on the Eshop.
Meanwhile Danaganronpa V3 is $29.99
@Yosher you can only avoid it if you buy it digitally or you just don’t bother with the game if you buy it physically. It is just excess space on your Switch then
Well at least it is optional. And it isn’t at FULL PRICE on the Eshop. So this is fine imo. So I might get Ultimate Summer Camp. MIGHT
Meanwhile, it’s a crime that Danganronpa V3 on the Eshop is $29.99 while THH and GD are both $14.99 individually. While I might get it (after getting and playing the first 2 games ofc) I am most likely gonna wait on Danganronpa V3 until it is cheaper
"Gacha-Style Microtransactions"
I feel like this kind of thing is literally gambling, with real money, in video games. I don't think we should stand for it. I hope I'm not alone.
Yep and the usual suspects will waste $60 on it. Enjoy your slot machine.
@anoyonmus Ohhhh I don't know why I mis-read. I thought it said I was $59.99. At $20 I do not think it is quite as bad. Like Rocket League used to be $20 and had them and it was fine. I just dislike full priced games having these transactions.
Seems more like gotchya micro transactions.
That's a huge shame. I'm definitely going to be voting with my wallet and giving this game a hard pass even though I thoroughly enjoyed the first three games and even the spin off. I refuse to support games that have these "progress speed ups" in their games because it usually means the games themselves suffer for it.
This being said, didn't Tales of Arise have gameplay boosters where you could just buy level ups or something like that? I don't understand who those are for or why people buy them. Just lower the difficulty if you can't beat the game.
Worth it for the three main games. Physical all the way!
@Thelastjedi2007 danganronpa.
Here is the correct spelling
@BloodyMurder it’s $20 on the Eshop. It’s $59.99 if you get physical copy of all 4 games
@Chocobo_Shepherd well at least it is M rated. It is on of the reasons why Ultimate Summer Camp is M rated. unlike FIFA which FOR SOME REASON is still T.
Also at least this game is $20 so it’s not bad imo.
I would protest if it is at $59.99 or $69.99 on the Eshop
@SoIDecidedTo it’s alright. It IS $59.99 if you get it physically and it also contains the other 3 games as well
The main games have this mechanic too except without the usage of real money, so I really don’t see anything really worth complaining about. The main games have this as well and the board game expansion, Ultimate Summer Camp is only $20 and NOT $59.99 like everyone thinks. Rocket League was also $20 originally when it first launched and it also had micro transactions.
Also you know YOU DO NOT have to spend real money on this. You can literally get coins from the game itself. Spike Chunsoft said that themselves
Boy am I glad I’m not a fan of this series. Absolute scum at its finest
@anoyonmus you won’t have to do it but They’ll probably make it next to impossible to do it without spending money
Sounds like DoA Beach Volleyball..just with gacha.
@BloodyMurder The $60 game comes with Danganronpa 1-3 (none of which have microtransactions btw) plus this Ultimate Summer Camp game as a sort of "bonus game" in the collection. It's just one feature in one of the 4 games in the collection, and as they stated it's possible to obtain everything without microtransactions anyway. So no, people will not be paying $60 for a slot machine.
This is just comical at this point. First thing I did when I saw the headline was chuckle.
I wasn't going to buy Decadence anyway because V3 is appalling and they omitted Ultra Despair Girls for no reason but this can now definitely go &?!# itself.
I wasn't going to click this article, but things changed after I saw Junko in a bikini, so kudos for that.
@anoyonmus When games like this incorporate shortcuts they make the grind more tedious to give the microtransactions value. Basically pay yo skip the boring chunks of the game. Then again some people are perfectly happy sitting there for hours on end doing the same repetitive tasks over and over so it is a bit of "to each their own." You can't really gloss over this fact like it's no big deal though.
Well anyways, maybe I'll look at a review first...but yeah, micro transactions can be annoying a lot of the times. Especially when the game shoves it in your face constantly...
@anoyonmus @Cynas @jcboyer515
No, you're all wrong. You're gonna buy the game and spend more than whatever the msrp is. Because Microtransactions work.
Also, Activision Blizzard won/settled their labor lawsuit. Because (and I mean this with all sincerity) they know just how debased people who play video games are.
That's unfortunate. Although, as long as they haven't tampered with the drop rates compared to when you could only buy the cards with in-game currency in V3, I don't actually really care.
Nobody should let this put them off the other games. They're some of the best domestically available adventure games/visual novels on the market.
Spike Chunsoft sounds like the name of a games developer you might find in a novel.
That's lame. I'll wait for a sale before buying this, that is assuming the game is still fun to play when avoiding the microtransactions.
@Cynas they don't have microtransactions but they do have the same mechanic that they have in Ultimate Summer Camp, just without microtransactions
@ATaco it isn't really a big deal when you compare it to FIFA, Madden or NBA 2K microtransactions. Because those games are at full price and Ultimate Summer Camp is only at $19.99. I have not spent money on microtransactions in FIFA mobile at all for instance
@Joeynator3000 you want to know what's worse than microtransactions?
In-game ads, IN A PAID GAME.
Anyway, provided that you can restrain yourselves from using microtransactions, then this game should be fine
What an effective way of convincing me to not even consider buying the game.
I understand lotteries are legal only because we would have black market lotteries financing other criminal activities otherwise. But there should be no reason to allow it in video games.
@Ralizah to be honest, this really isn't much of an issue when you compare it to games like FIFA or NBA 2K where you pay $59.99 for the same game every year and is loaded with loot boxes and microtransactions. Ultimate Summer Camp is at $19.99. Rocket League also originally started at the same price and also had microtransactions in it. Not only that, the main games also had the same mechanic as USC except without using real world money.
Personally, I wouldn't mind trying Ultimate Summer Camp and also THH and GD. But what really pisses me off is that Danganronpa V3 on the Eshop is at $29.99 while THH and GB are both at $14.99
@Heavyarms55 just buy the main 3 games individually off the eshop if you don't want Ultimate Summer Camp
@Chocobo_Shepherd well unfortunately, more companies will keep doing this. And yeah, I can definitely see why you think this is gambling essentially. On the Eshop, they specifically said it has "Simulated Gambling". The MonoMono machines are essentially gacha/slot machines
@anoyonmus ....Yeah I've heard some $60 games actually did this...wtf?
@Joeynator3000 IKR. I AM SO MAD ABOUT THAT.
This game better not have in game ads. If it does, I will not be buying it. I will wait for a review on this first
The 3 main games is where it's at, all additional content i tried so far has been really boring.
Most characters in the games are really poorly designed and just repeat the same catchphrase for the whole game. I can't see myself grinding the game for any of these characters.
Aaand there goes whatever little interest I had in playing the Summer spin-off...
@Bizaster
Just get 1/2 Reload and Ultra Despair Girls. You can likely get those three for pretty darn cheap if you shop around and you won't have to deal with dumb microtransactions or have to pay more for V3 which isn't worth playing.
Im only fine with gacha that isnt bought with real money like xenoblade 2
@Ultrasmiles you know it is completely optional right? For Ultimate Summer Camp
@Bizaster I have to agree, I do like Kirigiri's outfit. Also she is still wearing her gloves.... which to me is an INSTANT 11/10.
@Bizaster Nothing will be locked behind a paywall. The board game in V3 already had a gacha-style system for generating character cards (MonoMono machines, just like the system you used to get presents in the main games). It just didn't have the option to pay with real money.
@anoyonmus thats not the point , people who cant afford it will be left out . Imagine having to pay microtransactions to compelete your pokedex
@Chocobo_Shepherd I'm with you.. I hate this practice. Very greedy and another form of gambling
@Ultrasmiles ah well. You are right. Its unfortunate that this game will have gacha related mechanics but we must deal with it and move on
@Ralizah yeah its completely optional. Previous games had it too like you mentioned.
I am debating on whether to get Ultimate Summer Camp or Danganronpa V3 (yes, I am also getting the first 2 games) but V3 is pretty pricey (seriously, $29.99 for V3 while THH and GD are both $14.99 each???) on the Eshop compared to Ultimate Summer Camp so which one do you think I should go for?
so will this game get regular updates or no?
So PEGI are going to rate it 18... right?
@RainbowGazelle the entire series is rated M already in general. M for Mature for the ESRB in USA.
For you, it will be 18+ definitely
@jcboyer515 IKR. Me who played FIFA mobile has NEVER used microtransactions for this
Will this game get post launch content or no? Otherwise I might or might not buy it then
@anoyonmus Danganronpa V3 is lengthy and has some of the best trials in the series. It also goes some thematically interesting places with the series and has a fascinating marmite ending that, one way or the other, you'll probably never forget.
Summer Camp will probably be fun if you don't mind the grind involved (the UTDP board game in V3 was like the ultimate work of fanfiction, where characters from all corners of the series were able to interact in the same space), but V3 should absolutely be prioritized over it.
V3 should be played after the first two games, though.
@ChromaticDracula The font is Shin Go, a common Japanese font which is used in all sorts of things.
Compared to English, there's a lot less Japanese fonts, with companies charging a lot more in exchange - so you can end up seeing the same fonts time and time again.
Shin Go in particular... It's a clone of an even older font, Gona, after its creators refused to release a digital version. As Gona or as Shin Go, it's been used all over for nearly 50 years now.
The other font that stands out in those screenshots is also a Japanese one, "Rowdy", which according to its page, was even in Pikmin 3.
@Ralizah ok got it
Congratulations Spike Chunsoft, you just alienated a ton of new potential players from your franchise!
@anoyonmus Ah yes, it's not bad comparing a house fire to a forest fire. You know they're both still bad things right? I don't buy sports games anymore specifically for this reason and to see it slowly seeping into single player games is not something I want to become the norm.
Funny that you mention ads in a game though. So that's finally where you draw the line? Well ok...but now you'll understand the feeling when the ads become more and more prevalent because people will tell you "eh it's not really a big deal" just like you're saying to me right now. If they can make money off it and there is no backlash it will slowly creep into more and more of the game until what was once optional becomes more or less a paywall...and it will be too late to complain about it then because everyone will be used to it. That's how microtransactions have progressed this far in the first place.
People are freaking out over nothing.
Smash Bros Melee and Brawl had a similar thing to get trophies with in-game currencies (that you could get by playing matches).
Would people being freaking out over that too if it had the possibilities to also spend real money to get the trophies?
@ATaco yeah, but after 45 hours into Tales of Arise (on Hard mode too) I can confirm that the balancing is perfect and they didn't try to make the game artifically difficult to make people spend money on the boosters DLC.
I don't really know how it is on western game usually, as I don't play many of them, but on japanese one, it never felt like I had to grind or buy levels.
Definitely not for me. I'll take the mainline games coming to the Switch though of course
@iambobthebush its only this particular game. The other 3 games while having this same gacha mechanic as Ultimate Summer Camp only has in game currency.
So you can just buy the first 3 games off the eshop anyway
@bluesun I gotta say, I thoroughly enjoyed reading what you wrote and the information contained within. It’s really insightful and I’m really happy to know this now! It’s my “TIL” moment today
Thank you!
@GoldenSunRM if that were the case...then why even add them in the first place? If you can play the game perfectly fine without them then why are they in there in the first place? Assassin's Creed microtransactions started the same way as well. Very optional and the game was easy to clear even if you hardly did side quests. Now you are expected to clear most optional side quests to be high enough level to complete the game...unless you toss a few dollars for some exp boosters and whatnot. Publishers don't put in microtransactions just to have no one buy them.
