Ten years ago on 3rd November 2011, Super Mario 3D Land made its debut on 3DS in Japan. It's not typically held up or remembered as a glorious entry of the Mario series — indeed, at the time of writing it inexplicably doesn't rank on our dynamic reader-rated list of the 50 best 3DS games — but several of us in NL Towers have rather fond memories of this title and feel it deserves a spotlight to highlight what it did for the series and, indeed, its host system.
First of all, be sure to check out the video at the top from our very own Jon Cartwright, who makes a lot of good points that we'll be happily reiterating here. Give it a watch, also, as a reminder of what this joyous 3DS game was all about.
As Jon mentions, it's worth noting that Super Mario 3D Land was a major contributor to a rescue project for the 3DS. The system's launch in March 2011 had been particularly poor, especially when you consider its status as the successor to the wildly popular DS. Its initial sales underwhelmed to such a degree that Nintendo took multiple steps to steady the ship that, in hindsight, are quite stunning: Satoru Iwata and other senior executives took sizeable pay cuts; the company apologised publicly for its struggles; the 3DS was given a substantial price cut after just six months on the market, and early adopters were given 20 free games — 10 NES and 10 GBA — as compensation, with the GBA selection never made available outside what was dubbed the 'Ambassador Program'. In this current era of Nintendo basking in the success of the Switch, these sorts of actions feel very distant indeed.
The company successfully (arguably) rescued the 3DS and reversed that poor momentum, with the system eventually enjoying solid sales that generation, albeit still not close to replicating the success of DS. There was the price cut, of course, and then some major game releases in late-2011 and early-2012 that drove sales globally.
Monster Hunter 3 G was huge in Japan, though in the West we had to wait a while for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate; they were very different times for that particular Capcom franchise. Globally, late-2011 brought both Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, and the system went from a pricey portable with no must-have games to a more affordable new console and hot festive gift.
Of that trio of games (and only the two 'Mario' titles in the West), it was arguably only Super Mario 3D Land that actually emphasized the system's headline feature — glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. As the 3DS era progressed, the 2DS models came along and games used the feature less and less, but Super Mario 3D Land was an early example of Nintendo actively developing games to showcase the concept. It is a game that is simply better with that slider turned up.
That mix of unpredictability, creativity and the beguiling 3D effect hooked this writer, and it was a sales success alongside MK7 that helped to elevate the system.
Stages actively produced 'woah' moments, with camera angles and platforming tasks designed to utilise the visible depth and control possibilities they gave the player. Puzzle rooms would suddenly make more sense in 3D, you'd be falling down into depths and aiming for distant platforms, and the feel of moving Mario through a real space had arguably never felt so literal.
As our video from earlier in the year also highlights, it blended different Mario elements together in what was — certainly at that point — unique ways. Adopting the branding of the Game Boy Mario titles, it was filled with hybrid 2D/3D Mario design ideas. Stages had 3D tricks and challenges that brought Super Mario Galaxy to mind, yet ended with flagpoles and had upgrades that would be permanent until you got hit. Stage selection matched up with the New Super Mario Bros. approach, but ditched the convention of themed worlds in order to allow the development team to effectively do whatever it darn well pleased.
That mix of unpredictability, creativity and the beguiling 3D effect hooked this writer, and it was a sales success alongside MK7 that helped to elevate the system. Yet when we talk about Mario games and the best entries, it's rarely mentioned. We don't have the instinct that it's on any Nintendo planning documents for a revival.
There are no doubt multiple reasons for this. One is that it was pretty easy going, so those seeking a challenge may have felt underwhelmed; even the unlockable extras didn't necessarily strain experienced players. A defence of this, though, is that Nintendo was trying to introduce 3D Mario to a 3DS audience that was perhaps younger or less experienced. In addition, making heavy use of the 3D effect likely led to decisions that would minimise motion sickness and any other reactions to the autostereoscopic effect. Then there's the hardware it was running on — the 3DS wasn't a technological powerhouse and in order to generate that 3D effect, the frame rate for this game ran at 30fps.
3D Land was very of its time. While some of us were all-in on the 3D effect, cranking it up to max at every opportunity, for others it was an unwelcome and unused gimmick. As a game essentially designed with the effect in mind, it naturally won't be held dear by those who had no time for the charms of stereoscopic visuals.
Nevertheless, we'll happily argue that it's a game that deserves to be remembered and regarded highly. In this scribe's view is a fun little entry in the series that really showed off what that 3DS screen could do. Its hybrid approach would evolve into the excellent Super Mario 3D World on Wii U — which has had its renaissance on the Switch alongside Bowser's Fury in recent times. Perhaps Super Mario 3D Land will never get a re-release along those lines, with the concept not fitting these distinctly HD/4K-obsessed times. Yet still, it's a memorable game in its own right and deserves to stand if not alongside 3D World, then perhaps poking out from behind its cape.
It's only a decade old — how time flies! — but in its way Super Mario 3D Land reminds us of a bygone era. A time when Nintendo's creativity was tied inextricably to its hardware features, and when Mario was the most 3D he's ever been.
Ten years on and we still love it, but what do you think of the game's use of the system's 3D feature? Let us know in the poll below:

This game was amazing, and everytime I thought it was over it sent more stages or stars at me. So much packed into that game. I however don't think I ever used the 3D effect with it, I just never liked the 3D on any games.
My favorite feature on my 2DSXL is the lack of 3D. (Least favorite feature: changing the battery SUCKS!)
Also, as a parent, I never let my kids use the 3D feature on our 3DS or 3DSXL when they were younger. It was easy, since they hated it too. I think 3D was helpful once in solving a Professor Layton puzzle, but that was it.
It was good but I liked luigis mansion 2 a whole lot more. I had 3d on for the whole game.
Ocarina of time 3d was amazing that it’s hard to go back to the original.
It’s the best game on the 3DS and it’s in 3D so yes.
Fire Emblem was my favorite game for 3D. But 3D land was a blast
Can't believe 10 years have passed. While it wasn't per se the best Mario game. It was unarguably one of the best 3DS games.
It also notably was one of maybe five games to actively use POP-OUT 3D rather than the pop-in used by most games from third party developers.
I can’t believe that Mario Kart 7 is almost a decade old as well.
Best 3D Mario game.
I quite liked the 3D in this but it’s definitely one of my least favourite 3D Mario games. I still played it a lot but I had zero disposable income back then and I would probably not have persevered with it if I played it recently.
I preferred the 3D in Mario Kart but only just. I also loved the 3D effect in Ocarina. I miss that 3D slider. It is a shame that hardly any games used it by the end.
Switch... Switch
I've said this many times before but in my opinion, Ocarina of Time had the best 3D of all the games I played on 3DS.
That little screen felt like a window into that world and I got completely lost in Hyrule. It was so immersive.
I will always and forever rep the 3D effect on the 3DS as hard as I can. I definitely think SM3DL is one of the best examples, but games like Captain Toad, Kid Icarus Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D, RE Revelations and others are worth mentioning. It is supremely disappointing to me that 3D did not catch on in gaming. I absolutely loved it and almost always cranked it to the max.
Mario Kart 7 is my favorite 3D game. Mario 3D Land is a good one, though, for sure.
I really loved the 3D in Mario Kart, but it was easily most creatively used in 3D Land. I had the slider all the way up at all times, and was very disappointed as games slowly stopped using it.
I think the launch titles Pilotwings and Steel Diver used the 3D pretty well. Even so SM3DL blew them out of the water with better 3D and a lot of content. Many people to this day still think the game is short because they probably never bothered to play the more challenging second quest, playing only half the game. I did but could never beat the final extra stage. SM3DL is fun in its own right, and SM3DW is a improved, more fleshed out version.
easily top 3 best games on 3DS people tend to forget how good 3D Land is
Compared to other 3DS games in general, 3D Land was basically the ONLY game I couldn't play without the 3D on.
I also liked how it had the option to swap between "pop in" and "pop out", Pop in was best for the "open" levels, as if you were just looking through a portal or something. While "pop out" was best for underground levels when the camera was a bit closer to objects and stuff.
I got a headache and eye strain from the 3D effect, so I didn't play with it on. Without the 3D gimmick, I found 3D Land to be a generic disappointment, and my second least favorite 3D Mario game only ahead of Sunshine. At least I still did everything in this game with both Mario and Luigi, unlike Sunshine which I never actually completed. I'm glad others like it, though. There are plenty of other great games (Mario and otherwise) for me to enjoy.
I feel like I was one of the few people that always used the 3D on my 3DS lol. I always see people online saying they never use it and I know all my friends hated it.
That aside, this was the game that not only showed what the 3D was really capable of, but also how it could enhance gameplay. While the game itself was inherently not that difficult, the 3D made detecting depth and jump distance a breeze. Rayman 3D also benefitted from this as well but 3D World was built for it… literally haha.
Oh, I also loved cranking the 3D slider in Pilotwings Resort! It hurt a lot of peoples eyes but I was fine with it and it looks like you can see miles into the screen!
Can't see 3D like that in most cases, but it was definitely one of the best 3D Mario's in my opinion. Opened up for great games like 3D World.
Tbh I never used the 3D of the 3DS. Most of the time I shortly turned the 3D on after I bought a new game, then thought "So that's what this game looks in 3D" and then turned it of again permanently
It was incredibly replayable
Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate showcase really nice the 3D effect of the 3DS.
Yes, but only because it actively created problems to solve with the 3D.
Still one of the best 3DS games.
Ocarina of time. Best title on the 3DS
The best game on the 3DS? Hardly. That would go to Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse in my opinion.
It was certainly one of the best in the 3D department, but good 3D doesn't mean a good game. This game was good though, just not all that memorable in my opinion. I don't even know why.
I have to be honest…I really enjoyed 3D gaming and miss it. I wanted more of the 3D NES Classics as well.
Metroid Samus Returns has the best 3D that I have seen (but I haven’t played Mario 3D Land recently).
It's such a Nintendo move to add support for digital GBA games at the hardware level and then only use it to give away 10 games.
I enjoyed 3D Land, it was simple but the 3D was clean and performant.
3D Land was loved by critics but hated by a certain set of internet users I now refer to as "trolls." Of course, plenty of people who engage in good faith dislike the game, but most people did seem to like it a lot (if not as much as 3D World). Anyway, I liked it a lot and thought it was quite good.
Also, 3DS sales were initially excellent. It was in the 4 months or so after launch that it began to fall off a cliff. That was mostly because Nintendo didn't get any new games for it right away and people were convinced smartphones were the answer to all things gaming. Oddly enough, that general sentiment seems to have died down now that Nintendo makes a mobile game here and there. Funny how times change and people realize that new tech does not always replace existing products.
Again, 3D Land was very fun. Even if it wasn't my favorite 3DS game, I do enjoy it quite a bit. I was also an ambassador 3DS holder, meaning the annoying pissants who cried about me getting those games never got them (legally, anyway) and a petty part of me is very happy about that. Sorry to the cool people who bought 3DS (the vast majority of people who bought it after me fall into this category, tbf) and were never able to purchase GBA games on 3DS, though. That kind of sucks for you guys.
It’s my favorite 3D Mario game. I don’t need a sprawling Mario level with hidden crap everywhere. The tight isometric platforming was no frills and felt amazing. A Mario game that well exceeded its modest hype
It was one of the best games on the 3DS. The two very best games for the system are Dragon Quest VIII (the best turn-based RPG of all time) and Ocarina of Time (the best action RPG of all time). Super Mario 3D Land may not even be the best 3D platformer on the console - Rayman 3D is just as good.
3D Land was great, one of my favourite games on the system through a long way from being my favourite Mario game,
The 3D effect though? Not for me. Annoying.
A fantastic game and enjoyed every second of 100%ing it
What kind of person actually liked 3D world? That game was a mess and atrocious..... As a Mario game it was downright abysmal. Easily one of, if not Nintendo's worst 1st party effort ever. Right in line with Wii Music and Urban Champion, although I would argue WM was better as it was more toy than game and UC was better just for the novelty of being a functioning fighter on NES.
3D Land was infinitely better. It didn't have to make concessions for crappy 4 player nonsense, and the lack of exploration and on rails platforming was a much better fit for a handheld. Plus the 3D effects were amazing.
Loved this game and still revisit it every so often. The Zelda dungeon inspired level is awesome!
This game was awesome.
3ds was played without 3d on for me. Loved this mario wahooo
@IronMan30 Don't dwell on it anymore, four years later it became disgustingly easy to download anything from the eShop directly to the 3DS via CIAngel (now defunct) anyone who really wants can get them today using other methods. People even inserted their own games, few years later someone came along and even figured out how to remove the dark image and motion blur settings.
I had a blast 100%ing it for the first time, but when I tried to revisit it was not as enjoyable. I don't think it aged well.
@GameManAdvance
I never owned or played a 3DS but if it felt anything like watching 3D films I’d have hated it and would have turned it off.
Stereoscopic 3D gives me terrible migraines.
I think Link Between Worlds and Samus Returns utilized 3D better. The former because it had actual functional utility by being 3D and the latter because the 3D made the scope of the world grander on a 2D plane.
It was a pretty good 3DS game, not the best I'd say.
Still have my New 2DS XL and I would say, a pretty nice collection for it. Even though I think, the 3DS had a hard time and a bad lack of 3rd Party support.
From my collection, the games I enjoyed the most are:
Wario Ware Gold
Sonic Generations
Picross 3D Round 2
Ocarina of Time 3D (still the ultimate version)
Rythm Thief
Yoshis New Island
I had the slider up to the max! An awesome game that kept giving. I might have to revisit just to soak up that 3D effect some more.
Mirror of Fate.
3D in all 3ds games was amazing for viewing in short bursts until it started hurting your eyes
Yup it’s fantastic game. Though I’d like Kid Icarus port where the controls aren’t as awkward as a 12yr old on their first date.
Where's Super Mario 3D Land: Wario Land?
or Super Waaaario 3D world?
Yes, and is also the best game on 3ds library, have 100% at least 4 times
It did use 3D well but I would say Kid Icarus Uprising handled 3D the best.
But wow, we're heading into the 10th anniversary of the games that saved the 3DS. Price drop + 3D Land + Mario Kart 7 completely turned around the 3DS such that it became a hugely successful system which lasted 8 years.
ill join those that loved the game but didnt play it with 3d turned on. in fact, my only 3ds was a 2ds 😋 i do not care about "3D" at all.
I absolutely loved this game. Easily my favorite 3DS games and one of my favorite Mario games of all time. That said, I never used the 3D feature. The 3D feature did not add anything to any games and just gave me an instant headache.
Super Mario 3D Land is my least favorite 3D Mario, i actualy prefer the more 3D exploratory Mario games like Super Mario Odyssey/Super Mario 64.
That was a good year. Was saving up for the 3DS, my parents surprised me by buying me one since I was doing very well in school at the time. This was a late birthday present. The only thing really missing from the game in my opinion was a score counter.
It wasn't what I wanted at the time (I was getting sick of both 3D Mario and Zelda being linear back then) - but it's a great game to return to.
@TheWingedAvenger Oof, I find that a hard take to get behind. I've tried playing Rayman 3D a few times, and the controls and the textures just make me quit.
The 3DS is my favorite console of all time cause I loved the 3D feature and that 3D slider never left max.
Probably in my top 10 games on 3DS, i loved that game!
@AlienX tbh, I don't feel that bad for most normal 3DS owners as much as I love how people still complain they can't buy a GBA game on 3DS eShop. None of them seem to mention emulation, though so Idk about that.
It was okay, but not memorable for me.
At least i have finished the game.
I gave it 7/10.
In my opinion, Ratchet & Clank > 3D Mario games.
Super Mario 3D Land is still one of my all-time favorite 3DS games. I still play through it regularly along with OoT 3D. It's too bad the 3D effect never took off, as I found it much more interesting than higher resolutions. The 3DS will forever be the system I continually go back to to enjoy 3D gaming. Still enjoying those ambassador games too.
3D Land and MK7 where responsible to get me on the 3DS bandwagon and I'm happy that I did. Both great games with many more that followed.
Not Nintendo, but I really appreciated Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. The flashy moves and frequent changes in height helped sell the world for me.
Am I the only one that doesn't play with the 3D slider on either 3DS? It just hurts my eyes and gives me a headache. I don't play it for long periods though, but there are some instances where I can flip it to 3D, (Super Paper Mario reference) but I just don't play much in 3D
I love the 3D effect of the 3DS and is actually quite sad that we won't see a successor with HD graphics. Some of the best 3D games on the system are Luigi's Mansion 2, Monster Hunter 4 and Resident Evil Revelations. (There were also some truly great games where the 3D effect didn't add anything, such as Shin Megami Tensei 4.)
@Arckadius Thoroughly enjoyed it too. I played in 3D through most all of it--it looks fantastic to this day.
@KingBowser I almost always kept the 3D off, even with the New 3DS.
Metroid Samus Returns was the exception. I only turned off the 3D for the Boss fights since I was moving the 3DS more and I wanted a stable picture. The cut scenes, though, were excellent in 3D.
It's the only 3D Mario I've never replayed, so...
But as for the 3D effect specifically, I don't remember. It bothers my eyes, so I can't play with it on. Samus Returns looks stunning in 3D, though. Wish I could play it that way.
This game was the best use of 3D on the 3ds and easily a top 10 on the system for me. With that said, the honor of best game is far and away Kid Icarus Uprising. That actually might be my favorite game, period. Best 3rd party game? I might need to give it to Rhythm Thief but a couple stages did make me want to throw my system due to the finicky gyro required for a couple songs. Wonderful game though.
My top 3 favourite games on 3DS are:
1. Donkey Kong Country Returns
2. Legend of Zelda Link between worlds
3. Metroid Samus Returns
Mario 3D land is the best example for perspective need in game design for handheld gameplay, something I am missing with Switch.
Try playing castle level of Luigi Mansion 3 in handheld, you will not be able to see anything, because everything is zoomed out and the entire room is showed vertically on the screen.Iit is clear that the level wasn’t designed with handheld gameplay in mind.
Mario 3D is an amazing handheld experience, everything is zoomed-in and perfectly sized for handheld gameplay
I am also missing the 2nd screen of 3DS family. an HD New 2DS XL would be the perfect handheld console
I never bought this specifically because I heard that it leaned heavily into the 3D effect for the gameplay, and I don't see 3D at all. I loved my 3DS to bits, but the 3D part of it does not exist for me.
Kudos to NL for including a viable choice for me in the poll.
If you've seen this game output in 4K using emulators then you know the underlying visuals are just great and really hold up. Only the low resolution of 3DS holds them back.
Might be bias here, but Kirby Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot had the best use of "3D" on the 3DS. The visuals popped off but did not feel eye-straining, the games actually used collectable puzzles involving the 3D mechanic, and the games felt more cinematically improved.
This is actually my favorite Mario game, period.
I've never played it; I wish they would port it to Switch. I want all the Mario games on Switch. o.o
I would have happily got a 2DS from the beginning.
But 3D Land is a better game than World in my view.
The level design is much tighter largely because it didn't have to cater to the gimmicky nonsense that was 4 character play in World.
This was one of my favorite 3D games. I don’t have nearly as much time to play games as I’d like (who does?) but this was one that I jumped into and played to the very end completing everything. I mean, I even put the time in to max out the lives counter to see Mario without his hat! And Mario’s comments when you reopen your 3ds I still find adorable. One of the things I really liked was how you could pick it up and play a level even if you only had a couple of minutes to spare. I read somewhere that they specifically designed the levels so you could finish one between train stations (in Tokyo). I think it probably resonates so well with me was because it was designed with working people in mind instead of only kids and you could play it as seriously or as casually as you wished and still get a satisfying experience.
Star Fox 64 3D for me. I'm restricting this to the early games, as later games, especially with the New 3DS, had much improved 3D. Super Mario 3D Land is my second pick. Overall, I'd add Metroid Samus Returns in my top three.
For me, the best experience was Ocarina of Time. The simple geometry of the environments and the beauty of the updated graphics really shine in stereoscopic 3D. Same for Majora's Mask. It was just a gimmick in Super Mario 3D Land for a few visual tricks in the few Captain Toad micro-levels. The game is quite simple and the mix of 2D and 3D gameplay with 3D controls was a bit hit and miss. In Mario Kart 7 it's a subtle effect but works really well.
The 3D aspect of the 3DS was underated imo. I know some people didn't like it because they got headaches but for me, the 3D feature was so awesome in some games. The fact you didn't need glasses was amazing.
@thaimbomb I still love the 3D aspect of the 3DS, I genuinely never turned it off. Frankly I was hoping that Nintendo would have made a pro Switch that offered better performance, or if in handheld mode, you could trade the better performance for normal Switch performance but with the added stereoscopic effect for any game they could choose to create updates for.
Heck, BOTW can be experience in 3D via Labo VR, probably wouldn't be much of a problem to get that same kind of effect with a glasses-free 3D screen like the 3DS.
I really enjoyed this game. The 3D effect was spectacular, as was the effect in Link Between Worlds
As someone who never minded the 3D effect - though I learned to take breaks and not crank it up full blast - Super Mario 3D Land is one of the best examples of it in action. Both it and Ocarina of Time 3D are what spurred cheap college me to buy a 3DS. Most titles could be played fine without it, but SM3DL was one of those titles that was better with it. All 3DS Fire Emblem entries, the 3D N64 games, both Bravely games, Metroid: Samus Returns, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon/2, and A Link Between Worlds also use it well.
I'm hard-pressed to think of a title in my collection that used the effect poorly (if it used it at all), but then again I often did my research before buying. I was disappointed when more and more games released without support.
This was one of my first games for the 3DS, so I may be a bit biased, but it’s one of the few where I remember being “wowed” by the 3D. There were a few levels were it seemed like Mario was literally popping out of the screen. One of my favorite gaming memories, for sure.
This and Captain Toad had the best 3D IMO
I know this sounds like a lie but I really liked the 3D in federation Force. I wish enough people were on the servers so I could complete the game. Aside from that, it has to be Star Fox and the N64 Zelda's. Samus returns didn't really need 3D but it is one of my favourite games.
The 3D effect was one of the big draws of the 3DS for me. It even made Mega Drive games better.
This game was alright and paved the way for 3D World. Its use of the 3D effect is quite profound compared to most other 3DS games.
Don’t know about 3D but it had very good shadow placement and physics. Something I require for games like this or I misjudge distance sometimes. So as always thank you Nintendo for great game design.
It used the stereoscopic 3D the best, but it wasn't actually all that creative and enjoyable. It's basically NSMB 3D. They didn't really add any creative new gameplay mechanics, give Mario new abilities, or anything like that. It's just a plain jane 3D Mario game. 3D Land was another forgettable entry in that long line of linear platformers in the late 2000's/early 2010s that made the series feel creatively bankrupt.
I'm still a little annoyed that it wasn't included with the Switch port of Super Mario 3D World, and likewise for the DS, 3DS, and Wii instalments in the New Super Mario Bros. series for the Switch port of U as well.
Also, stereoscopic 3D is incredible and I would love for Nintendo to revisit it one day. It was quite disheartening that even Nintendo themselves had mostly abandoned stereoscopic 3D with some of their sunset 3DS releases. I even bought Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on both 3DS and Switch (my second and third copies following the Wii U original) to experience it in stereoscopic 3D and again in HD, and the 3D effect did not disappoint. There were also some subtle differences in the gameplay due to the lack of microphone and second screen on Switch, and those little differences helped break the monotony a little.
It was good, but I think one of my favourite 3D games was Kid Icarus
This was what defined the 3DS for me. It was either this or Ocarina of Time 3D, because both games had an amazing usage of the 3D aspect. Unfortunately, I dropped off the 3DS halfway through its lifespan so I don't know much about how well the 3D goes.
I think I'm a sucker for 3D platformers. I have spent far more hours on other 3DS titles, but 3D Land is one of the few 3DS games I took the time to 100% complete. It was a fun romp, it truly made great use of the 3D, and I'll always look back on it fondly.
@FishyS Me too bro. Me too
I got this game for free when I bought my 3DS approximately a million years ago, and I still haven't played it. Oops.
They should have ported this to switch, or included it on the mario 3d world/browsers fury release
this has one of the most levels of any Mario game and it's so underated, it's surly my favoite mario game
@saanaito same with me it's the only mario game i beat.
@DiamondJim your not wrong.
