Some of you Wii U eShop download fans with decent memories may still be looking forward to Road Redemption, a title coming to Wii U and PC that immediately brings to mind the Road Rash series, with the original crowdfunding campaign even citing the iconic bike racing series. We say racing, but in truth our younger selves rather enjoyed the over-the-top combat.
With its planned PC release in August — Wii U will come afterwards — developer DarkSeas Games has been occasionally releasing footage to show the work in progress. There was new footage in January that was surprising, as the zoomed-in close combat of the concept screens was cast away in favour of a zoomed out view, gun battles and what seemed like some wonky physics. It was footage of an early build, of course, but it was underwhelming; the footage in question has since been removed from YouTube.
We now have updated footage, and it's looking a little better. The camera angle has been noticeably zoomed in, and the physical close-quarter combat is on show — some poor individual called Jason Tate is battered off his bike repeatedly. Check it out below.
The official website for the game, meanwhile, emphasizes the following features:
- Take your gang on an epic journey across the United States
- Seamless, procedurally generated world, that's different every time you play
- Tons of weapons including swords, chains, cattle prods, grenades, shotguns, and many many more
- Earn money, new gear, and equipment to improve your character
- Battle enemy gangs, cops, and the military, all with state of the art AI
- Local splitscreen and online multiplayer play
Though still a work in progress, this latest footage does renew some of our optimism for this one. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I'll keep my eye on it
ahhh rose tinted glasses Road Rash back in the day when EA made funny looking sega carts & we didnt think of them as the spawn of the devil.
Ouch, looks like it really hurts. Looks way better than the last footage I saw.
It's coming along just fine. Just like I said the last time when the game was way too harshly judged by way too many people for having shooting elements in it and "not feeling like a tribute to Road Rash" at all.
I really like how it is developing and this trailer made me smile, and not even for the graphics, because they honestly aren't that much better than the last time, but it is good enough and the improved camera angle does a lot, but most of all they truly seem well on their way in succeeding to actually capture that Road Rash feel. Kudos.
I hope that you can start wheeles and jump off f cars with it like in Road Rash , this was alway the coolest thing about this game ^^
Looks pretty good :3
I need online play for this to be something that i would want to play for hours.
I bet all the people criticizing this game on here from a few months ago feel pretty stupid now.
Never judge a game this far out from release.... Everything was a place holder and they didn't apply any effects, but they still released a video to show off the mechanics of the game, and they were harshly criticized here with accusations of an N64 game.
Its coming along nicely and this is still Pre-Alpha footage. Lets wait until it gets close to release before we bash it.
The game looks good but I agree with Goonow. It will need online multiplayer to keep players glued for hours, Without online multiplayer, it isnt going to be worth buying
I want this game.If its anything like road rash I'm sure its going to be fun.
the music is so out of place, hire a new composer!
I loved Road Rash, so a spiritual successor is always welcome. I'll see how this comes along.
But what does put me off is that they expect you to pay for an alpha version! Unless they discount the alpha price from the final game, this is somewhat greedy, especially considering they'll save themselves a lot of work on bugfixing, since they won't have to look for them as much.
it's evil! Niiiice for a change!
@vonseux
So true! ANY Rock tune f.ex. would be way better!
One of the best games on ye olde Genesis. I am for sure looking forward to this if it's got a solid single-player campaign. I had the GBA game and it lost a little of its charm, so hopefully they get it right!
Like it, hoping it also uses the Wii remote (Wii Wheel), right?
I grew up on Road Rash for the Genesis (I think it was the Genesis anyways- it's been so long). I'll definitely be grabbing this to relive it all once again...
Looks fun, any release window yet?
Looking forward to this game i hope it has online.
I played it a bit on the Megadrive (Think I still have a cart of one of them think it is 2) but most on Windows 95 multiplayer over lan.
It actually looks pretty cool now
What I would have loved however, was for the graphics to look more bold, chunky, clean, colorful and cheerful looking, like how arcade games of the 90s used to look.
You know; like this: http://ytinstant.com/#https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpgJ9UBShVY
I've never been a big fan of these aesthetically slightly dull "realistic" looking games to be honest.
Still, it's looking pretty fun for what it is.
It's looking alright, the sound design could do with a bit more work though, those impact noises sound out of place. Looking forward to the next trailer.
looks good!! loved road rash
Looking good!
I'm super excited for this. I really enjoyed Road Rash 64 and this looks like a love letter to the RR series.
@Kaze_Memaryu The alpha was part of the Kickstarter, and letting people in on it helped fund the game. The people who paid for the alpha in the Kickstarter wouldn't think it was fair if everyone got in the alpha for free, either.
I wouldn't want to pay for an alpha myself, but that stuff is what got this game made, so it's a bit of a necessary evil, maybe.
@Starchaser02 the last bullet point lets you know it have online multiplayer.
Looks a lot better than its first showing. It'd be nice if the Wii U version included Wii remote/nunchuck controls, as I always thought that Road Rash would have been a perfect fit for them.
@JustinH Sure, that makes sense, but did they not get enough money from the kickstarter run? If so, that's a sign of overestimation from them. The fact that they need to offer a paid alpha version also starts to make me doubt their abilities.
@goonow ditto
Looks like it is coming along pretty good so far, I'll have to keep a look out for this one.
@Kaze_Memaryu It seems to be the standard practice now.
Do Kickstarter / Do early access at a high cost / Release at a quite low cost and immediately do the next Kickstarter / put it in a bundle and on sale a bit later.
@Kaze_Memaryu The alpha version includes access to "all future versions" of the game. I think that includes the full version, so you don't have to pay again.
It's pretty common practice for PC games. You're essentially "preordering" the game and in return you get to play the alpha version while you wait for the full version. Steam even has a program called "Early Access" to facilitate games that do this. The idea is players of the alpha version will help support the game by reporting bugs and suggesting features; it's an easy way for indie devs to get an army of playtesters.
Some one make a snowboarding spin off for Balance board and Wiimote!
@ToastyYogurt Oooh, now that turns the tides, of course! If you get the full version on release, everything's cool.
@Varoennauraa
There was Snowboard Riot and Horizon Riders (hoverboards not snowboards) on WiiWare that used the balance board and Wii remote.
@CaPPa
Thanks man!!! How the hell I didn't know about them. I have been pretty careful with my daily Nintendo news routines, and I have been particularly looking for these kinds of games!!! Both look awesome even today, and I need to check them more closely.
What the heck happened to this. We've had no news for ages, any news on release date?
