Feature: A Week of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Screens - Issue Sixteen

Posted by Thomas Whitehead

Skull Kid, Turnips, a Lloid rocket and more

It's Monday, so that means it's Super Smash Bros. screens time; once again we have Masahiro Sakurai to thank, as he diligently gives us our regular fix over on the Super Smash Bros. Director's Room Miiverse community board. To half-quote Depeche Mode (google them, younger readers), we just can't get enough.

Last week's screens did reveal enough to prompt a couple of separate news articles, meanwhile. We had confirmation that the StreetPass Quest / Find Mii villain will appear in the 3DS version, with what looks like a dedicated stage, while Majora's Mask fans may have temporarily lost their composure at the sight of a Skull Kid assist trophy. The latter continues Nintendo's habit of gently teasing fans of the iconic Nintendo 64 title.

You can see those and three others from last week below, with a rideable Lloid rocket potentially stealing the spotlight. As always you can click on the date headings to see the original Miiverse posts and given them a 'Yeah'.

So that was last week in the wonderful world of the Super Smash Bros. Miiverse Director's Room. Let us know which is your favourite out of these screens in the poll and comments below.

What's your favourite Smash Bros. screen this week? (378 votes)

Mega Man is stunned by The Villager's turnip (behave)

The Dark Emperor puts the fright on Wii Fit Trainer

Sonic takes a shot, Mega Man is an unconvincing goalie

Kirby's entranced by the Lloid rocket

It's a Skull Kid assist trophy, which looks glorious

Um, I can't decide

To be honest, I don't like any of them

At first I was like OMG EVERYONE VOTED FOR THE SKULL KID, then I noticed i was the first person to vote...

Goginho said:

Obvi Skull Kid will get most votes this time. I personally don't really like any of 'em :/

Angelic_Lapras_King said:

Okay, now Capcom HAS to bring Megaman Soccer to the VC this time! Sorry Capcom, but Nintendo's pretty much set it out for ya... XD

as much as i like seeing all the majora's mask references lately in smash and a link between worlds, i can't help but feel Nintendo is getting a really good kick out of teasing us.

Hmm I wonder how anyones going to be able to avoid the falling moon =p

Hunter-D said:

The Lloid Rocket was the most impressive simply because it's completely new to Smash.

I honestly can't wait for this game. Love this series.

skull kid would easily get my vote... if it wasn't a fu***** assist trophy

Funny_Moblin said:

@Gioku Why do people call these flashy, awesome moves OP? Just because they look really cool doesn't mean Sakurai can't make their % damage lower...

I don't understand the fascination or excitement for the Skull Kid assist trophy. I don't have anything against Skull Kid, but unless I missed it somewhere, it's not been said what it actually does.

I remember some of the Assist Trophies in Brawl were incredibly lame. Issac for example was TERRIBLE and used MOVE, of all the psynergy attacks and summons in the game, the game developers chose MOVE, a utility psynergy for solving puzzles. It shows that their total knowledge of the game was about what they learned in the course of 1 hour of playing a new game.

If Skull Kid doesn't make the Moon with a face crash into the stage (preferably with the moon slowly growing in size and approaching the stage over the course of a minute) I will be disappointed..

Talk about hype these screen shots are going on for another year.
And people taked about how hyped gtav was lol

Where is my boy Mike Jones! from StarTropics fame? Forget Ness, this was the first Nintendo mascot to wield a yo yo & baseball bat.

Also, i wish i had experienced Majora's Mask. I always love it when a sequel really shakes things up and goes against the traditional formula.

I like the face-off between the Wii Fit Trainer and the Dark Emperor. Wii Fit Trainer looks like she's about to get into a boxing match with that dragon or something. The stage it takes place in has me hoping that Miis will be playable. Wuhu Island appears in the Wii U version, and now Find Mii? I'll honestly be surprised if Miis aren't playable.

No surprise at all that Skull Kid is winning more votes. I think we can agree that his attack involves the scary moon falling down and crushing the opponents of the one who summoned Skull Kid. I never understood why people wanted him to be playable anyway. It's going to be very interesting to see what new assist trophies join him, or maybe returning characters from Brawl as well.

The Villager hopefully won't be too powerful, but I'm considering him as a main whenever these games come out. He just looks like a lot of fun to play and he has such resourceful moves.

Mega Man, Mario, Sonic, Link, Samus and Donkey Kong all in one game (with many great others too), talk about all-stars... I still can't believe it! I remember... well, "squeecking" when they announced Mega Man would join the brawl.

Shambo said:

@CountWavula What's even better: Ocarina of Time is still regarded as one of the best games ever. If they played it safe and made a sequel of the same sort, they could've spoiled it all. It would either be worse, and break the name; equal, and 'more of the same'; or better and both would be less well-known by today probably.
Now it's completely different from the previous title, and even the entire series, so both have their own cult following. Perhaps the smartest move in gaming history?
However, I do disagree on one thing: it's NEVER too late to experience Majora's Mask. There's even three ways to experience it now (Wii Virtual Console, Zelda Collector's Edition, and N64) and I'm a firm believer a fourth way is upon us, in glorious 3D. Although, that's not a certainty so far.
But for now, if you have a Nintendo home console more recent than SNES, then you can still experience it, and it's absolutely worth it!

Sad that Skull Kid isn't playable but I wasn't holding my breath on that one, at least we got an assist trophy (though I'd prefer a Clock Tower stage). I can't wait to hurl the moon down on unsuspecting towns.

B-Squared said:

I'm in the minority here, but I really like the Mega Man Soccer one...he just glares so intensely at Sonic and Trainer. I really like how cold and emotionless Mega Man is being depicted (so far, anyway). A heartless killing machine matched in bloodlust only by Villager

ricklongo said:

None of them really impress me, so I'll go with the one with a random image of Kirby on the bottom right corner (because Kirby makes everything more awesome, obv).

sketchturner said:

Dang, now I really want Skull Kid to be playable!!! No matter how great this Smash Bros ends up being, I will always be upset that he is just a trophy.

Handy_Man said:

@SkywardLink98 Did you not see the Project M logo in my comment?

Anyway, I'm super hyped for Demo 3.0. All the Brawl characters are finally included, Roy and Mewtwo are also playable for the first time since Melee, Turbo mode looks Turbotastic, and some characters have really awesome alternate costumes like Dr. Mario for Mario and Pajama Ness for Ness. Once the download for Project M Demo 3.0 goes up, I'm going to get it and play it ASAP!

steamhare said:

I'm voting skull kid because he looks like he's going to call down the moon for the assist.

Melkaticox said:

@Luigifan141 It's just Brawl with some of Melee's mechanics...

And yeah, I really liked the comment on the socc-- FOOTBALL picture. That's my favorite one.

Handy_Man said:

@Melkaticox It's so much more than you think it is. I don't play it because it feels like Melee, I play it because it's extremely fun to play both competitively and casually, there's awesome stages and music hacked on to enhance the experience, and Project M overall makes Brawl feel a lot more epic. Also, it has custom music, turbo mode, alternate costumes, crew battles, and a very balanced roster. Both Melee and Brawl don't have any of those, and they miss out compared to Project M because of it.

Don't judge something before you try it.

sinalefa said:

I liked the third one. They are playing soccer on the wing of a moving plane!

TeeJay said:

@CaptainCharlie Of course, being an assist trophy, he will appear in the same way in the 3DS version so it really doesn't prove anything.

I voted for the Lloyd rocket. It's just so random. I'm imagining Lloyd wiggling like crazy as he's hurling through the air!

Giygas_95 said:

Unrelated I know, but 3DS MIIVERSE IS LIVE IN NA, GUYS!!! You have to download a system update!

Excep7ional said:

I know that I'm going to be in the minority here but, I don't care about these screen shots. As cool as they are, I just want to see some gameplay already.

Gaaah! Nintendo are you releasing Majora's Mask 3D because if you're not stop shoving it in our faces.

DarkNinja9 said:

i noticed that nintendo is teasing us more about MM and no news on a possible remake -_- hoping for a wii u one though

Hortencio said:

December 6th: The day one of my many Smash Bros. dreams died (for the next five, six years at least), as Skull Kid get the diss-of-a-debut as an Assist and not Playable??!?! I swear if Ganny doesn't get his own moveset (I will accept Luigi-like clone as long as he has, I don't know, ONE sword move!), I will be very angry with the franchise...

Hortencio said:

#51: True, he and Waluigi got to be in (right?), but had high hopes for the Kid to make the roster this time around; sounds like a lot of people enjoyed Majora's Mask (see: mad posts above), so why not? Maybe in 2020 for SSBV...

NightmareXIV said:

If they make an MM remake they should make it for Wii U not 3DS they need more good games for Wii U.
