BIT.TRIP BEAT Updated!
Posted by Corbie Dillard
And it's quick and painless.
If you've taken a look at Gaijin Games' official web site you likely noticed the announcement that their first Bit.Trip release BIT.TRIP BEAT has been updated on the Wii Shop Channel. This update makes a few improvements on the level unlocking scheme and a few other minor improvements.
The other good news is that it won't cost you anything to update if you already own the game. Just head on over to the Wii Shop Channel and select UPDATE on the Wii Shop channel selection. This update will not effect your previously saved game data either. So what are you waiting for?

WiiWare can update games? Does that mean games with bad controls can update? If the dev is willing?

This isn't the first time a WW game has been updated.

I have this game so I might as well update and play it and see if it is any better. Didn't even know it was going to be updated.

I wouldn't think so, no. This is mainly for bug fixes, not design problems of that nature.

Thank goodness, this was a game I wanted to love but the level system made it very frustrating for me. I'll be downloading the update this weekend for sure.

well the EU-Version was already bug-free. so yeah, us only.
most updates were Virtual Console. last WiiWare update i've seen was for Final Fantasy.

It would be nice if Telltale fixed the glitches in the Monkey Island series. I've heard they'd coped with them in the fourth episode...

This game had bugs that needed fixing? And here I was hoping the update would do something to the gameplay, like maybe make it possible to beat level 2...

Corbs said:
If you can't beat level 2, it's not the game that needs updating, it's your skillz.

Level 2 is easy peasy. Wait until you see Level 3.
Just messing with you. I'm too afraid to seriously pick on you lest you make fun of me for how horrible I am at Demon's Souls.

Level 2 I managed. 3 is another story.

This is a good sign, I hope, for WW game patches. There were a few things in Tetris Party that I sent an email to the developers about that would be easy patches. I wonder if they will do it now that this is possible.

@Corbie: Oh, hush, you.
@Adam: Darn tootin'!
Also, I had meant to ask: Will this update display in the Shop Channel if the game is on the SD card? In the past, this hasn't seemed to be the case. Did they update that? If not, how do I update a game that's on the SD card?

I still can't make it to the end of Level 3. I'm at 3/4 of the way when all hell breaks loose and I end up starting all over again. Will definitely have another go today.

I haven't ogtten past lvl2 yet, but I've only played the game 4 times. I hope the music gets more epic.... there was hints of it in stage 1 when you transition between sections.

@newlykate: What was in the EU update of Lit that we don't have?
#23
Stuffgamer1 said:
@newlykate: Yeah, I want that too, but I hear Nintendo won't let them do that. As Corbie said, title updates are supposed to be to fix bugs, not game design problems.
@CommanderVideo: They upgraded the controls to avoid the contextual issues present in the American version (one button for both nearby objects and held items was dumb, so they split it up in the European version).

Thanks for the update, CommanderVideo. =)
The new update makes the game's file size 316 Blocks compared to the previous 312 Blocks. I can't wait to see if I can tell the difference. Maybe, maybe not.

CommanderVideo said:
@Stuffgamer1: Yeah, that drives me nuts. I'm on the final couple rooms, and that issue alone is kinda making it a chore. All in all, though, I really enjoy Lit.

Wasn't that nyx 1000pt game or whatever updated with a new name for europe? If so then bit.trip beat isn't the only game that had been updated.

It's good to know that the level unlocking bug was fixed but they could've been a bit more timely with the update, after all Beat came out 8 months ago!

does anyone know what the other 'minor improvements' are besides the level-unlocking thing?

I already unlocked all 3 levels, so I guess I don't really need to update...still, cool nonetheless.

Stuffgamer1 said:
@Smashbro99: Ray Silver said that this update has actually been up for a couple of weeks. That means that if you bought the game this past Friday, it should have been pre-updated.
What "level-unlocking thing" is this supposedly fixing anyway? I wasn't aware there was a problem (besides the game being too hard)...

this game was awesome. i've beaten all three levels, but i'll prolly update anyway, just for the heck of it.

Mayhem said:
@Stuffgamer - to unlock level two you had to get on the high score table (ie. score over 500,000 points) in addition to merely beating level one. Some people were completing the level but not scoring highly enough to make the table, rendering level two still locked. If I remember rightly.

skywake said:
@Stuffgamer1 from memory if you beat a level but didn't get a high enough score it wouldn't unlock the next level. They released a save game on their site that had all levels unlocked as a temp fix and I assume this is the proper fix.
edit: what Mayhem said

Ren said:
nice. Perfect for me since I just got it a month or two and was having trouble with that. I get really good at the level, hence lots of breezy high scoring runs and then finally pass it, bumbling through and it doesn't beat my own score so it's still locked. Finally I can open three with this.
I was holding off on LIT since I heard that the EU one had some control issue fixed, does this mean that neccessary patches can be attended to? (I know Corbie said no, but it seems like major control issues that have already been fixed should be allowed to be updated here, too)

The reason it's been taking so long is probably because they all have to go through that lengthy approval/release process... as far as I know anyway. Am I right, CommanderVideo?

I still can't beat level 2
. I've pretty much given up on the game. It's not a bad game it's just not for me. I wish I didn't waste those Wii points buying this. This is why I like the idea of having Wiiware demos to see if the game is for me.

I was surprised that people complained about the "unlocking issue". If you aren't good enough to get a high score when you beat the level, you need more practice and don't deserve to have the next one unlocked automatically.
Although the wavy beats are much easier to see, I'm not really a fan of the color change. Now they are just so... mauve.

Viper6391 said:
@AENIGMA
Well, if that's the case then I guess I'll try one more time because one of the reasons I couldn't beat it is that I had trouble seeing some of the beats because the background kept getting in the way. I don't know if it'll make much difference, but I'll try again.
#47
theblackdragon said:
@ejamer: in the Bit.Trip games, you can make the high-score board without beating the level. there were people who had already filled the board with massive scores before they finally beat the level, so much so that their level-beating playthrough score wasn't high enough to be a high score anymore... that's where the problem was, because you had to have a score high enough to make the board in order for the game to record that you'd beaten the level and unlocked the next one.

CommanderVideo said:
@SmaMan: There are a lot of reasons why it took so long for this update to come out. The approval process wasn't really a big part of it. I think that basically, when you have so many parties working on anything, it compounds the amount of time it takes to get something done. In the end, we're just thrilled to have the update out there, even if it's a bit after the fact.

Actually, not quick at all. This game has has 312 blocks (now 315) so it took a little more than five minutes to download. Also I had doubts downloading this so thats why i still have the old bit.trip beat on my sd card and the new one on the wii menue.

I updated Bit Trip: Beat this morning and played a game to see if the changes were obvious. They aren't. Unfortunately, this game is still a waste of money. BT:B still has a cute premise, but the visual design is still extremely poor.
There's no decision making, no "playing", it's just memorization.
