Highly-anticipated Chrono Trigger-inspired RPG Sea of Stars has been delayed, Sabotage Studios has announced (thanks, Gematsu!)
Sabotage shared the message on its Discord and on Twitter. Sea of Stars is a spiritual prequel to the studio's previous game, the platformer The Messenger. While this delay will no doubt be disappointing news for RPG fans out there, we're also sure many of us are excited and happy to wait just a bit longer.
Here's the message from the team behind Sea of Stars in full:
A Word from the Team
As we are closing in on a very big milestone the road to launch becomes clearer, and we find ourselves here with a large body of text and our logos at the bottom. Keeping in mind our two main priorities—quality of life for our team and quality of the finished game—we can now confirm that Sea of Stars will be released in 2023.
We understand waiting is a big ask, and want to sincerely thank our community for the overwhelming support and positive vibes. In the meantime, we are looking at options to get a playable slice out to everyone this year
All the love,
Saboteam
Fortunately, the developers want to get "a playable slice" out for everyone sometime this year, so hopefully, we'll have a demo on the horizon before the year closes out. But we're ready and waiting patiently for this fantastic-looking game.
How do you feel about the delay? Let us know in the comments.

it's ok, I dont have the time to finish the games I already have.. I can wait til next year.
Aww take your time. We will be here when it’s done. Honestly this year is stuffed to the brim so this may be in their favor.
No rush. It's preferable when games ship as complete and bug-free as possible.
Not upset about it at all, there's way too many games releasing this year that will keep me occupied. Xenoblade 3 will tie me up for months (can only really game on the weekends)
Noooooooo. I mean polishing is fine but seriously was my most anticipated.
Edgelord/Jordan Peterson devs, I'm happy to skip this despite it looking like Secret of Mana
Right on; no rush, no crunch. We have SO many games to play. This one will be well worth the wait.
Was hoping for a Demo for the KS supporters to try out at least. Hopefully those getting physical don't get lost in the process.
Ahhh that's unfortunate but it's alright! I'll be looking forward to it when it releases! I have some other games to keep me busy in the meantime!
That’s fine, I can wait. This game looks amazing, and I definitely don’t want the developers to have to rush it out.
All good. I backed it on kickstarter. I have no problem waiting a little longer to have the final product. ♡♡♡. I'm beyond excited nonetheless.
Never heard of it before but Star Ocean 2 was one of my favorite RPGs so I'm interested. Delays are always welcome over rushing something out of the door.
No big deal. I'll be excited to see more when the time comes. We can wait patiently.
With the amount of RPGs (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Remastered, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Live-a-Live, the DioField Chronicle, Harvestella, Mega Man Battle Network: Legacy Collection, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 3 Portable, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, Nier Automata: End of YorHa Edition, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Dragon Quest Treasures, etc.) coming this year and next year for Switch alone I say this delay is okay. If it means the game would be great I'm all for it.
I was just thinking about this game this morning. I’m glad it’s being delayed, because I MAY be done with Sunbreak by then. But probably not
Well, I thought it was already 2023 so no skin off my nose.
I’m glad they are taking care of their employees.
NINJA APPROVED
This year is so packed, I'm perfectly fine with this delay, especially if it leads to a better game in the end
@boatie What does Jordan Peterson have to do with this?
@Mr_Fox The Messenger is one of my favorite games of all time, and I literally never noticed this before. I just had to do some googling.
It seems one of the shopkeeper’s stories that he tells you is from a “Jordan the Wise,” and people have connected the story to something Jordan Peterson said.
I never caught that before, and I never would have. It is inconsequential to the game.
I’m excited to play this-though the well-being of the staff and state of the final product are more important.
@boatie Your loss. This game is shaping up to be pretty dang good.
A pity, it was highly anticipated by me! Nevertheless, we're going to have PLENTY of JRPGs this second half of the year, so it's not such big deal, honestly.
I mean, Live a Live, Xenoblade 3, FFVII Crisis Core, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Dragon Quest Treasures, Pokemon, Harvestella...
These edgelord devs also did a "Did you just assume my gender" "joke"
@boatie Cool I'm gonna buy 3 copies just because you're obviously sitting out.
I forgot this was originally scheduled for this year! So, no biggie. Plenty of backlog to get me well into next year.
@LittleGhost lol no you're not and even if you did blowing your money to own a stranger on the internet... great job
@boatie Oh no I definitely am going to. Thanks
@LittleGhost Go ahead, I'm sure I'll feel very owned for some reason
We all wish more games would bake longer than be rushed and have to deal with bugs/patches galore. I backed the game. I'm fine with it getting the attention needed. If they can afford/justify the additional time, they really should invest in the game. I'll take better QoL for the studio peeps and in the game than on a rigid schedule any day.
I don't understand why but delays don't actually bother me. This game is looking like it will be amazing and I intend to be here by the next year anyways.
Kudos for the team for transparency. I'm glad they consider putting team's quality of life on balance with game development
That's a shame as this one looked so good but if that is what needs to be done in order to make the game the best it can be then that is ok with me.
Damn, I was really looking forward to this one
Not a Shigeru Miyamoto delayed game quote in sight. Huh.
@boatie oh no, people said things u disagree with. U should try to cancel them... We can't have people with other viewpoints having entertainment.
@twztid13 I'm not cancelling them, I'm just saying they suck
See, Sega, it’s okay to extend the launch period of games to ensure that they come out with as little bugs as possible
@boatie if I decided to skip any game where the developers made a comment or Easter egg regarding politics I don't agree with, I would skip over half the games on my radar.
@tkdboy1889 You probably have pretty bad politics then
@boatie which was hilarious by the way!
