Re: Review: Prodeus - An Excellent DOOM-Style Shooter For Old-School FPS Fans

russellohh

@OorWullie i call some "no reload shooters". i'm a huge gamer, game hours a day, but my best friend of 32 years only games with me. for whatever reason he's always stuck in the mid 90s doom method of every gun just having a few hundred bullets. he often forgets to reload, and dies as a result. i literally look at new games for us to play as "is it so 90s there is no reload?!"

Re: Review: Prodeus - An Excellent DOOM-Style Shooter For Old-School FPS Fans

russellohh

i play the original Doom/Doom 2 multiple times a month to this day, but every time i read "boomer shooter" i imagine its an old dude throwing expired dunkin donuts coupons at a starbucks employee and demanding she honor them

or shouting "Back in my day we had no problem paying for a house and college! whats a new house cost these days, 300 a month? and i bet college is up to $100 a month now! Bootstraps!"

Re: Talking Point: The Mummy Demastered - Has A Better Game Ever Come From A Worse Movie?

russellohh

so in this game for anyone that hasnt played, when you die you respawn without your weapons and have to kill your zombified self to get them back
including your health upgrades
i'm a pretty good gamer but i am STUCK because i am near the very end of the game, in a save point surrounded by enemies, and i cannot for the life of me make it more than a couple screens without dying. or, i manage to to my old self, and die immediately.

apparently i am missing a really good upgrade from further back in the game thatll make it a lot easier but

i guess ill try yet again to get there

bigger problem is, ill go months without playing, start again, and need to master the controls and weapon quirks.

instead i die 20 times in a row and give up

Re: How To Redeem No Man's Sky Switch Exclusive Ship & Multitool

russellohh

i'm glad the game has way more content now, but the lack of a party or real interaction with NPCs kinda has me wary. people have called it minecraft in space and thats not at all what i like

then ill see the gorgeous space views and some kinda black hole area and

aaaand then i read about how people spent 100 hours grinding to get a ship upgrade and i'm just.....no

Re: Feature: How Stardew Valley Grew The Farm Sim While Harvest Moon Went To Seed

russellohh

@umbreon_sylveon agreed. i own maybe 2,000 games, used to work for EA games. its my main hobby.

stardew is my favorite game of all time by a pretty decent amount

earthbound, fallout, mass effect and mario rpg are up there, but stardew just combines the best of all

if i were told i could only play one game for the rest of my life, it wouldnt be a hard decision
at all

Re: Feature: How Stardew Valley Grew The Farm Sim While Harvest Moon Went To Seed

@msvt its really good. several characters have broken homes, one guy has PTSD, two are alcoholics.

BUT MOST OF THE GAME IS SUPER SWEET

but when it gets dark it gets dark. the people feel real, and the multiplayer is fantastic.

in multiplayer you can all marry someone else, or each other.

for a game about farming, you sure get involved in who had an affair and why this person hasnt been seen in a year ...

Re: Feature: How Stardew Valley Grew The Farm Sim While Harvest Moon Went To Seed

russellohh

I saw harvest moon in nintendo power and fell in love with it. I've owned almost every title, and some of the story of seasons titles. I haven't liked the newer games, and was blown away by Stardew Valley.

i have stardew valley tattoos, shirts, and love everything about it. Absolutely amazing to me that it was made entirely by one dude

i run a 45,000 person stardew facebook group, and one person looked at their achievements and realized after 250 hours playing, they were only about 30% through completion.

some people call the community center the main quest, but finishing it unlocks most of the game- i've always seen it more as a tutorial that shows you the basics.

a tutorial that takes 50 hours

i love doom and fallout and mass effect and resident evil, but every night before i go to sleep, i try to play about 20 mins of stardew, harvest moon or animal crossing

Re: Nintendo Once Again Reassures It Has No Plans To Increase Switch Prices

russellohh

would anyone care if they did? it costs about a day's wages for an adult, and has been out like 6 years. if you never had one, you've had the better part of a decade to save up, and if you already have bought 3-4 like many people have, just save up a day or two

even a 20% price increase is barely anything for something as low as $250

Re: Random: Domino's Is Trying To Lure In New Workers With The Chance Of Winning A Nintendo Switch

russellohh

@HedgehogEngine i honestly dont see it that much as due to speculation, but more people being forced to look for new jobs- and being shocked to find out what's out there. I remember working a junk job for a few weeks that paid $8 an hour, and i left it for an identical job that paid 24 an hour, which is what that job actually should pay.

Some people had worked their for years thinking "hey its $1 an hour more than retail and i dont have to deal with customers!"

now those same people are forced to find new jobs- and suddenly realizing they were being taken advantage of the entire time.

Re: Review: STAR WARS: Knights Of The Old Republic - Still Strong With The Force Despite Dated Design

russellohh

KOTOR changed my life. It was the first open world RPG i played, and it really accelerated my love of gaming. I normally game an hour a day but I must have played KOTOR for 16 hours a day for 2-3 days until i beat it

i eventually got a job at EA games because of my love of kotor, and my decade-long career in software testing was only made possible because of that first EA job.

Earthbound was also a huge factor

Re: Quake Receives Its "First Major Update" For Nintendo Switch

russellohh

i play doom weekly with 2 of my friends. we were never big into quake but wanted to mix it up a bit

one of us can never join our match, and more annoyingly when we do splitscreen it shows that "no other accounts are valid" or some such.

it legit looks like even for splitscreen you need to pick a player with a PAID copy of the game

for splitscreen.

anyone else have this issue?

Re: Random: Tonight's Direct Is Also Nintendo's 132nd Birthday

russellohh

Nintendo Power was always very friendly and kid-safe, with polite responses to customer inquiries and reviews that never got edgey.

One of only 2 times i saw snark in NP was when they had written a multi page article for the 110 or 120 year anniversary of Nintendo, going on about how the company was founded in 1889 in the end of the samurai and cowboy eras, not long after the american civil war, in a time of steamships and yadda yadda yadda.

1889 is referenced 100 times along with all of those historical items. someone wrote it in and said "i think you have a typo, you claim nintendo was founded in 1889 when it clearly isnt that old". The NP editor just replied "...did...did you manage to read even a word of the article?"

Re: Wonderful 101 Kickstarter Backers Hit With Customs Charges And Handling Fees

russellohh

@ObsidianEleven on a kotaku article i said i don't trust kickstarter, since so many of the games never come out. Shovel Knight was the only one i could think of, and said so- bloodstained and mighty no 9 werent out yet.

I got over 200 replies asking me if i heard ofa little thing called shovelknight.

Yes, in what, a decade of kickstarters, i have in fact heard of shovelstarter: kicknight .
