@Ogbert I think it's a stretch to say there are "Many" games that require detached JoyCon. Out of my entire collection (70+ games at the moment) Mario Party is the only one that comes to mind that requires them. It's a fair point that certain titles wouldn't be playable out of the box, I just don't think it's a major issue.
Even so, saying it wouldn't be cheaper because it may "require" a separate purchase is missing the point. Cutting the JoyCons or the Dock makes it cheaper. If you know you're going to want those out of the gate, then obviously the cheaper version wouldn't be for you. It would make for a cheaper cost of entry for those not interested in certain features, or be an ideal second system for homes that already own a Switch. Otherwise, the existing SKU would remain available for purchase, so I don't have any issue with a SKU dropping certain features.
Ultimately, I do agree with you that Nintendo will likely not go that route due to the possibility for confusion - however, they've done far dumber when it comes to marketing (New 3DS/2DS/Wii Mini/Wii U), so who knows. I think they could do it as long as they got their messaging right. I do agree with you that the most likely scenario is that the current switch drops in price when a "pro" model is launched.
@Almighty-Koz I understand the argument, and that's why I don't really expect Nintendo to go that route. However, I disagree that it would be an issue - purchase the product that suits your use case. I would have issue with the current Switch or some upgraded pro version, a portable only, and a home only version as long as they are marketed clearly enough (None of this "New" nonsense) to not cause confusion. After that, it's up to the consumer to purchase the SKU with the features they value.
@janpampoen Who cares if a new model gives new buyers benefits that day 1 buyers didn't get? It's not going to impact our ability to enjoy our current Switches. I find it highly unlikely, especially at this point in the Switch life cycle, that any new pro model would have exclusive software anyway.
@Ogbert And I'm not saying that's a bad thing =) Just that's it's a different use case, is all. Personally, I'd love to see a portable only Switch (Non-detachable joycon, no dock included) at a lower price point. It would be perfect for homes that already have a Switch or for people that play almost entirely handheld, but you could also purchase joycon/dock separately if you need them. I doubt Nintendo would do that, but it would suit my use case perfectly. Generally speaking though, I would be in favor of more SKUs, as long as they are marketed clearly to prevent confusion. For example, I've heard multiple people ask for a cheaper, home console only system, which despite being completely useless to me, I would be in favor of Nintendo releasing.
@Almighty-Koz Assuming it could still dock, you would have the most important feature of the Switch. My joycon live on my switch 100% of the time and I use a pro controller when docked. I'm sure there are many others that do the same. I'd be okay with non-removable joycon, especially given that there would still be a SKU with detachable joycon for those that want it.
I admit, it looks nice, but I think it's got a few major usability issues. The triggers are a bit small and seem shaped the same as the bumper buttons. The sticks are very shallow. I also personally much prefer offset analogue sticks. Even if they are not offset, I feel the buttons need to be on top for comfort's sake, especially when handheld.
@janpampoen It's a difficult concept to grasp at first, but when new hardware comes out, you don't HAVE to buy it. Your existing Switch will continue to work just fine.
@MrBlacky No one is saying it is "More fun" to play online than local co-op. Of course, most would choose local co-op when it's feasible. That doesn't mean that no co-op is somehow more fun than online co-op.
@MrBlacky As someone that also loves local co-op, and that's pretty much the only way I play games with friends, your view is incredibly naive. I'm not even going to bother coming up with scenarios as examples, but I'm sure you can stretch your imagination to think of a few situations in which you may want to play a game with a friend, but they don't happen to currently be under the same roof. More options are always a good thing.
@PigmaskFan It was absolutely cheating, as he broke the rules and had access to a larger pool of art (Previous designs instead of original art) giving him an advantage over others that did not reuse designs. It's the textbook definition of cheating.
@rjejr Getting a group to chip in extra money to buy a complete Switch bundle, then selling/raffling off the Switch, just to keep the dock is not exactly what I would call an "easy" process when it comes to buying things. Which begs the question - Why is it so hard to buy a Switch dock? NL should really do a piece on that.
EDIT: I thought I had a smiley in there somewhere... so in case it wasn't clear, of course I'm just joking and giving you a hard time.
@robr Heh, I wouldn't have known any better 5-10 years ago either. But, having back issues, and now working full time from my home office means I spend anywhere from 10-16 hours in an office chair per day. My back hated me until I finally took the plunge on an Embody, and I couldn't be happier... unless they knocked a couple hundred off the price.
@NEStalgia Thanks - I was going to basically say the same thing as your first paragraph, so thanks for saving me from the typing =) So I can go on a different rant instead! I think it's worth mentioning that a company as large as Herman Miller no doubt already funds humanitarian efforts. The increased revenue/publicity from this stunt will likely help fund those efforts - which are also a form of marketing/publicity which fund future efforts, and the cycle continues.
The other thing that irks me, is that people that criticize stunts like this as a waste of money, and it instead should have gone to charity, are rarely willing to do anything of the sort themselves.
Now, if we want to debate whether or not this is a good use of change.org, that's a different topic altogether. I do think it was a poor use of the platform, but after the story already went viral, I really couldn't care any less that Herman Miller took advantage of it. The real travesty is that they gave him an Aeron, rather than an Embody. For shame Herman Miller!

@ilikeike Thanks for clarifying. It's interesting how not being interested in a genre, or being extremely interested in the genre, can both result in someone being extremely critical =). I tend to love card based games, so maybe I'm a little too lenient here. I definitely share your opinion on battle length, though - they could be toned down a bit.
@ilikeike Personally, I think it's great. What is it you don't like about it? I can understand if you're not a fan of card games or turned based RPGs, but that doesn't make it a sub-par game.
@Broosh No amount of effort could make this any better. BotW always struggled to maintain a consistent 30FPS. The system is too low powered and the screen is too low resolution. This was just a terrible idea from the start, and should have never been released.
@J-Plap Third person games can be amazing in VR. One of my favorite experiences was Lucky's Tale, despite not being that great of a platformer. The sense of scale, being able to look around freely, behind objects, etc... was really enjoyable.
@Bunkerneath Just from reading the press release, I think it's pretty clear it was just a terrible translation job. My guess is they meant "Perceived" (By consumers) to be uncomfortable, not intentionally "Conceived" (By Nintendo) to be uncomfortable.
@WomboCombo I've definitely had issues with my JoyCon (Delayed inputs, dropped connection, etc...) even after sending my original set in for repairs. The range/connectivity just doesn't seem to be that great.
That said, I agree with you - I don't think that should hold anyone back from buying a Switch. It's my favorite gaming platform of all time, so far. Besides, my JoyCon live permanently attached anyway and I use pro-controllers when attached to the TV.
@nessisonett I have to lulz at @Itzdmo - I'll be honest, I was a skeptic when Smash Ultimate was revealed, because at first glance, I thought it looked like it was getting the MK8 Deluxe port treatment. That couldn't be further from the truth, and it only take about 5 minutes of playing to see that Smash Ultimate is in no way a port. Reusing certain assets, or building off of previous games, does not make a game a port.
@Zidentia What a ridiculous comment hunting for trouble where there is none. Of all the articles to pick on for being "Click baity"... The best part, you say this headline is "sensationalist" and you think someone saying this game will eat up your spare time is "galling"? Do you REALLY find that galling? You're being a bit sensational about the whole thing, no?
@Lroy It's stupid easy. Steam has built in support for the Switch Pro controller, so there's nothing for you to do to get it to work, unless you want to tweak it slightly to you preferences - which you probably will. Swapping the button layout from Xbox to Nintendo style, dimming the home button light, setting up the gyro for certain games, etc...
@CrazyZelda79 I should have said "proper" shoulder buttons. I've seen similar designs in the past, with flush buttons on the back. I'm sure they're fine for certain games, but I can't imagine they would be very comfortable for game that make heavy use of the buttons.
I really wish we'd see some cases built around the full size pi. I get that it would need to be stripped down, probably removing the header pines/some of the ports, but it would be a much more capable machine. The Pi 0 is just too weak to be a capable emulation device in my opinion. I'd also prefer to see a GBA influenced layout, to allow for shoulder buttons.
EDIT: And for those unaware, Ed Mandy does have the Freeplay CM3 (freeplaytech.com), which is basically just Pi on a custom PCB for the GBA housing, but it is quite expensive.
For what it is worth to anyone else interested, I enjoyed this game far more than Enter the Gungeon. I played through this with a friend, so perhaps that's difference, but I definitely enjoyed my time with Nuclear Throne more.
@SonOfVon @BANJO Purchasing second hand is rough, but it's not that bad if you get it from LRG or SRG directly when they go up for sale. Don't get me wrong, the price is pretty steep - but there's been a handful of games that I've loved and wanted physical copies of (Iconoclasts, Golf Story, Yooka Laylee, and a couple others) that I don't mind paying $35-$40 for.
@Zyph I actually wish Nintendo would put a stop to this entirely. If a game can not run after opening the package and putting it in your Switch, it should not be a physical release. Just make it digital, or use a larger cart and put the patch on it. I don't even care if physical costs more as a result in some cases, but having an unplayable cart is pretty worthless.
@redd214 As a little kid, me and my 3 brothers were allowed to play 30 minutes a day. When I got a little older (10-12 maybe?) the limits were loosened, and we may have played 1-2 hours on some days - but that's because we were involved in other hobbies, sports, going outside with neighbor kids, etc... Older still, limits were completely removed, but then we no longer had time due to jobs, friends, sports, etc...
That was a really long way of saying - I agree. Parent your own kids, and set limits accordingly. Every child/scenario is different. Yeah, it sucks that some parents don't care at all about their kids, but to ban something because of it is nonsense. My two and a half year old would watch cartoons all day if I let him, but I don't need the government to ban addictive cartoons to protect my child. So he gets about an hour when he wakes up, and maybe an hour or so before bed.
@fcknmrcls Yeah, except the second image is intentionally misleading, with the tiniest amount of the cord showing from the top of the controller, then mysteriously disappearing into nowhere. So yeah, while it's clearly wired, it wouldn't be that difficult to overlook it.
@ryancraddock No worries, you have to be that guy =P You are the author after all. But if a neon Jigglypuff is supposed to be discrete, with a huge "Berry Juice" written across the front that means nothing to the masses, I'd say their designers need some help. Plus, look at her eyes! They're terrifyingly buggy.
EDIT: Ah, I didn't even notice my typo in my first post until @Ooyah reiterated =) Ill leave it, since it makes Ryan's reply funnier now. Odd that I got it correct the first time, and then incorrect the second time, entirely unintentionally.
Really wish they'd offer different fabric options. Not the biggest fan of 100% cotton, otherwise, I'd have ordered a couple. Uniqlo offers some super soft blends for the other shirts.
EDIT: @RR529 It's 100% cotton, so it will definitely shrink some. Can't comment on exactly how much though.
@ShadJV And it kind of sucks - If you ask me right now, I'd tell you I absolutely LOVE those N64 3D platformers. Pretty much all of them. Unfortunately, every time I break out my N64, I am extremely disappointed. As an avid retro gamer, it is the one generation of games I genuinely dislike revisiting, with very few exceptions - and that's even with the strong pull of nostalgia.
@ShadJV I'm with you - and I think we're in the minority. I think this game was Good. Not amazing, but good. My belief is, it is just as good as Banjo Kazooie and most other N64 3D platformers actually are today - it's just not as good as most remember them.
@ryancraddock In response to post #30, I for one greatly appreciate it. Not a fan of the nonsensical April Fools', but I suppose you'll find plenty of other people who enjoy it. Still, I hope the trend of not doing fake news for April Fools' continues.
@MarkieMAN64 That's fine - like I said, I have no issues with the content. I also read the subtitle - but you can't tell me that the headline and subtitle does not still has a negative tone to it, when it was actually a positive response by Nintendo, in my opinion. If that doesn't bother you, fine - but obviously it does other people.
Just as you say people do not need to read the articles, no one needs to read the comments - but we choose to. Do you really want to the comment section to be nothing more than an echo chamber of unconditional praise? Goodness, I hope not. In this case, I simply decided to agree with another poster on a misleading title. Nothing more. It doesn't mean I hate NintendoLife and their articles.
@MarkieMAN64 It's not a matter of disliking the article. The article is fine. It the header that's misleading. And yes, I did read the subtitle - which certainly helps, but doesn't justify an intentionally misleading/sensationalist headline. I'm not saying it's an outrage and we should all boycott NL =) Because people really do cry "clickbait!" over just about everything - but in this case, it seems justified to me.
@RainbowGazelle I get sick of people saying everything is click-bait and have said as much in previous posts... But yeah, if ever there were a click-bait article, this is it. Nintendo does something good by shipping the fixed part out ASAP, and this headline makes it seem like that is a bad thing.
As for my own experience with Nintendo support, I was one of the lucky day 1 buyers with JoyCon connection issues. Nintendo gave me a free shipping label, advance shipped me a pro-controller for 50% off, and overnight shipped my repaired JoyCon when fixed. Hard to complain about that.
@Sun-WuGoku You can't stand people that: 1. Enjoy owning a physical collection 2. Have the possibility of loaning to friends/family 3. Can sell games if needed 4. Can share across multiple systems in the household 5. Enjoy's playing retro games from 30 years ago, and would like to do the same with the Switch someday without worrying about being able to re-download games
Makes sense alright... Digital certainly has it's perks, and I own my fair share of digital games, but there's a lot of reasons people prefer to buy physical releases. None of which would be cause to "Not stand somebody" regardless of which type of media people prefer.
I suppose I just can't wrap my head around that line of thinking. That's fine, we can move on if you'd like - we seem to be primarily in agreement. I fully agree with your first paragraph - sounds like we're in similar places in our lives when it comes to gaming, and I love the switch as a hybrid. But I have seen plenty of people post here that they use it exclusively portable or exclusively docked. For those people, if Nintendo chose to launch cheaper home/portable versions, I wouldn't care in the slightest - I would just continue using my current switch. I also agree that it is likely a bad idea to drop the hybrid concept, primarily due to marketing reasons, but I could see them doing something like that late into the generation or perhaps next.
Edit: Oh, and we agree on the big debate the Switch is clearly a handheld that can be played on the TV. I despise the hybrid marketing mumbo jumbo.
@Blizzia It's a fine argument to say that from a marketing perspective, they should stick to the hybrid. However, I'm not sure what there is to be outraged about if they didn't. Just don't buy the new revision. As I said, I have absolutely no interest in a home console only version, but should they release one for those that are interested, it doesn't impact my ability to play my current Switch. I would be interested in a cheaper, smaller, portable only console - though I agree with you that if they do make a cheaper/smaller system, it should (and will likely) remain compatible with the dock.
@RetiredR @Blizzia I'm completely fine with them releasing a home-only version, eventually - though I wouldn't buy it. I do agree that making the more powerful version home only doesn't make a ton of sense. I think there would be an even bigger market for the more powerful version to be able to run games at a proper 1080p handheld.
@Link41 Unless they updated the photos, those first 2 pics for sure are far too low resolution to be from the PC version (Only one I have experience with) or the other consoles. Looks like the Switch version to me. What makes you think they are from another version?
EDIT: Looking at it again, I'm fairly confident they're all from the Switch. I could be wrong, but they certainly don't look as detailed or as sharp as I remember on PC.
@NintendoFan4Lyf It was clear to me, I just wanted to chime in for others considering PC gaming, but put off by the high costs. Luckily, my obsession is a bit more manageable =P For me, I absolutely can't stand when frame rate drops below about 60 or so, with 80-90 being my sweet spot. Low details don't bother me too much, but frame rate better be 60+. I don't know why I am so sensitive to it, but it's to the point where even masterpieces like Breath of the Wild actively bothered & distracted me. Perhaps it is because my roots are in PC games.
That said, if Nintendo were to release a "Pro" version of Switch that would help with frame rates, especially in hand held mode, I fear I would be obligated to purchase.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I don't mean this in a rude way - because it appears you also acknowledge this - but the issue isn't really with PC gaming then, but rather your own obsession. I've been a PC / Nintendo only gamer pretty much since the beginning of gaming. I used to be just like you, and built a new PC every other year.
I still have that urge, but my current PC is 6 years old (Intel 4770K w/GTX 1080). I originally built it with a GTX 780, and this was the first time I've every upgraded vs. buying new. We're not seeing the huge leaps in performance that we used to. I still play most games maxed at 1440p, and my CPU (OC'd to 4.0ghz) is just now becoming a bottleneck. You could have a very nice gaming PC for less than $1000 that would last you for quite some time. If you're obsessed with the best... then yikes - you're in trouble, when it comes to PC gaming =)
@MisterDevil You said that well after making your absurd statements multiple times as fact. Post #213 was based entirely on conjecture, yet presented as fact. You made direct comparisons to how Netflix and Spotify do things to how Google "does" things, as if that was how Google was actually currently doing things. Once again, very best case, that's extremely dishonest and misleading. So perhaps you should re-read the posts in the order they were posted.
You comment on the cost of Music vs. Movies vs. Games has no real bearing on the conversation. They are all different industries, of different sizes, with multiple competitors in the streaming space. If anything, that proves that the behavior is consistent across industries. Even basing your guess off the play store has no relevance, as once again, they are essentially just mimicking what other storefront have done, primarily Apple. A streaming video game service is completely unrelated to taking a percentage cut of sales from a digital storefront.
There's absolutely no evidence to support even the hypothesis that Google would attempt to sell streaming only versions of a game at full retail price. Again, they're not alone in this space - both Microsoft and Sony have competing products, and the competition is only going to get stronger. Even if they were to attempt to do that, I think everyone would agree it won't be around for long, as it would be one of the biggest, fastest failures in recent memory.
@Fake-E-Lee @HAL9000 Couldn't agree more. Prior to Switch, I played almost all of my games on PC during the rare time I had free, and my Nintendo consoles were pretty much only for party games when I had friends/family over. The Switch changed all of that, and being able to pick up, play, and suspend whenever I want without fighting the wife or kids for the TV makes it so much easier for me to progress in 5-10 minute increments (With frequent interruptions) and still have a great time. I find myself playing far more games on my Switch than I ever did with previous consoles.

The best part, you say this headline is "sensationalist" and you think someone saying this game will eat up your spare time is "galling"? Do you REALLY find that galling? You're being a bit sensational about the whole thing, no?
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 8.0.0 Is Now Live
@Lroy It's stupid easy. Steam has built in support for the Switch Pro controller, so there's nothing for you to do to get it to work, unless you want to tweak it slightly to you preferences - which you probably will. Swapping the button layout from Xbox to Nintendo style, dimming the home button light, setting up the gyro for certain games, etc...
Re: Celebrate The Game Boy's 30th By Putting Your Raspberry Pi Inside This Awesome Case
@CrazyZelda79 I should have said "proper" shoulder buttons. I've seen similar designs in the past, with flush buttons on the back. I'm sure they're fine for certain games, but I can't imagine they would be very comfortable for game that make heavy use of the buttons.
Re: Celebrate The Game Boy's 30th By Putting Your Raspberry Pi Inside This Awesome Case
Re: Review: Nuclear Throne - Fans Of Enter The Gungeon Should Check This One Out
For what it is worth to anyone else interested, I enjoyed this game far more than Enter the Gungeon. I played through this with a friend, so perhaps that's difference, but I definitely enjoyed my time with Nuclear Throne more.
Re: Mortal Kombat 11 Day-One Patch Will Be More Than Double The Size Of Base Game, Says Data Miner
Re: Mortal Kombat 11 Day-One Patch Will Be More Than Double The Size Of Base Game, Says Data Miner
Re: Super Rare Games Announces Joe Dever's Lone Wolf Physical Release For Switch
@tobibra Who cares? I strongly dislike tomatoes, but that doesn't mean I think they're evil, or that you're a terrible person if you like them.
Re: Random: Prince Harry Thinks Fortnite Should Be Banned
@Stocksy I suppose you find it impossible to criticize stupid decisions if your home country also makes stupid decisions?
Re: Random: Prince Harry Thinks Fortnite Should Be Banned
Re: PDP Reveals Switch Controller With Headphone Jack And Adjustable Audio Settings
@fcknmrcls Yeah, except the second image is intentionally misleading, with the tiniest amount of the cord showing from the top of the controller, then mysteriously disappearing into nowhere. So yeah, while it's clearly wired, it wouldn't be that difficult to overlook it.
Re: Pokémon Center Launches Discreet Line Of Detective Pikachu Merchandise
Re: Pokémon Center Launches Discreet Line Of Detective Pikachu Merchandise
Nothing says "Discreet" like a neon Jigglypuff and Berry Juice =P
I admit, the others are pretty discrete though.
Re: Uniqlo Launches Fresh New Line Of Super Mario T-Shirts
Really wish they'd offer different fabric options. Not the biggest fan of 100% cotton, otherwise, I'd have ordered a couple. Uniqlo offers some super soft blends for the other shirts.
EDIT: @RR529 It's 100% cotton, so it will definitely shrink some. Can't comment on exactly how much though.
Re: Yooka-Laylee's Demastered Nintendo 64 Mode Is Out Now On Switch
@ShadJV And it kind of sucks - If you ask me right now, I'd tell you I absolutely LOVE those N64 3D platformers. Pretty much all of them. Unfortunately, every time I break out my N64, I am extremely disappointed. As an avid retro gamer, it is the one generation of games I genuinely dislike revisiting, with very few exceptions - and that's even with the strong pull of nostalgia.
Re: Yooka-Laylee's Demastered Nintendo 64 Mode Is Out Now On Switch
@ShadJV I'm with you - and I think we're in the minority. I think this game was Good. Not amazing, but good. My belief is, it is just as good as Banjo Kazooie and most other N64 3D platformers actually are today - it's just not as good as most remember them.
Re: Video: Hmm, This Nintendo Direct Presentation Sure Is Suspicious
@ryancraddock In response to post #30, I for one greatly appreciate it. Not a fan of the nonsensical April Fools', but I suppose you'll find plenty of other people who enjoy it. Still, I hope the trend of not doing fake news for April Fools' continues.
Re: Random: Nintendo Repairs Faulty Switch And Then Sends It Back To The Owner Without Joy-Cons
Re: Random: Nintendo Repairs Faulty Switch And Then Sends It Back To The Owner Without Joy-Cons
Re: Random: Nintendo Repairs Faulty Switch And Then Sends It Back To The Owner Without Joy-Cons
Re: Cuphead Physical Release Confirmed For Nintendo Switch
@Sun-WuGoku You can't stand people that:
1. Enjoy owning a physical collection
2. Have the possibility of loaning to friends/family
3. Can sell games if needed
4. Can share across multiple systems in the household
Re: Talking Point: There's Room For A Switch 'Family' If Nintendo Nails The Messaging
Re: Talking Point: There's Room For A Switch 'Family' If Nintendo Nails The Messaging
Re: Talking Point: There's Room For A Switch 'Family' If Nintendo Nails The Messaging
Re: Review: Unravel Two - Another Confident Switch Port, Perfect For Platforming Fans
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Releasing Two New Versions Of Switch This Year
@NintendoFan4Lyf It was clear to me, I just wanted to chime in for others considering PC gaming, but put off by the high costs.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Releasing Two New Versions Of Switch This Year
@NintendoFan4Lyf I don't mean this in a rude way - because it appears you also acknowledge this - but the issue isn't really with PC gaming then, but rather your own obsession.
Re: Google Reveals Stadia, Its Vision Of A Cloud Gaming Future
Re: Cadence of Hyrule Is What You Get When You Cross Crypt of the NecroDancer With Zelda
Wow - I would have been super excited for a standard necrodancer sequel - but a Zelda themed one? That's just amazing.
Re: As Cloud Gaming Steals Headlines, Nintendo's Latest Japanese Ads Highlight The Strength Of Switch
