Conan O'Brien, bless him, is a good sport when it comes to gaming.
The television host has been known to dabble in the industry in the past, even hanging out with the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima. But that doesn't necessarily mean he's always clued up on certain games, as a recent episode of the 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend' podcast has demonstrated.
As pointed out by our friends over at GoNintendo, the story goes that Conan was on a Zoom call with some colleagues and happened to catch a glimpse of a rather handsomely designed living room in the background of one. He quickly complimented the employee on her "cool, creative, Etsy-style room" before being told that it was actually a screenshot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
A separate colleague then turned the screw and stated that the game doesn't exactly boast the most photo-realistic graphics, but is "kind of like The Smurfs".
Conan's defence was that the screen was filled with small boxes, but this excuse didn't seem to sit well with the others on the show. To be honest, we've seen some pretty swish-looking Animal Crossing abodes — ones that put our real-life residences to absolute shame! If Conan mistook a stylish shack for our actual house... well, we'd probably rub it in, too, but we'd still take the compliment!
If you want to hear the story for yourself, head over to the 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend' podcast and skip over to the 5:30 mark.

Who wishes their real house was as nice as their AC house though?!
I miss Conan's "Clueless Gamer" segments.
@mid_55 I don't like cockroaches that much to be honest
I wish I had the power to pocket anything I want and put it wherever I want whenever I want, it would make life much easier.
I miss Conan on late night tv.
@NorwegianMate Oh, does it happen often that you're not home for several months?
Oh, why was that comment removed? It wasn't even unconstructive
to be fair the homes do look like real life Nintendo did an amazing job like always
Remember when Conan was getting the Tonight Show?
And had a subtle Mario-themed background?
sigh I miss thinking that would last for a long time.
@CharlieGirl loved those. His Witcher 3 and FFXV “reviews” were my faves, but many others were great too.
All those people that make their AC houses flawless and post online, I wonder what their real living rooms look like.
when Nintendo first showed off the new features in Happy Home Paradise most reactions were like "that's a real house not gameplay" they really did do a good job with detail
@gugugaga Not really, just an old fashion hoarder
Well, he is a self-proclaimed "clueless gamer".
The human brain's capacity for papering over the gaps around our selective attention really is amazing, and that's not a knock against Conan at all. If the mind expects to see the periphery surrounding the person it's focused on as a real room, and there isn't anything actively obtruding on it to tell it otherwise, then that's what it's gonna see.
If anything, it just goes to show that whoever it was O'Brien was talking to really was just that riveting .
And people are always saying the Switch has bad graphics.
Conan is the greatest living comedian and I dearly miss his Clueless Gamer segments. His podcast has been great.
I miss Conan's late night shows and Clueless Gamers videos, but I have to say his brilliant CONAF podcast has been filling the void nicely
For some reason my brain read the headline as "Conan O'Brien Mistakes An Animal Crossing [The] Room For The Real Deal" and, seeing the screenshot, I was like... did he confuse an AC character for a real animal, what the hell???
Lol.
@mid_55 I love some of the sets. Wish I actually had them
