@Jd12345678 I had no idea that they were still being made, let alone being downloaded. Thought they died out around the time we stopped choosing our top friends on MySpace, when Google didn't own YouTube yet, and when smiley faces were still being typed by hand.
@Kimyonaakuma Never be an apologist for a dev. If players spend money on a game, it's reasonable to expect a certain amount of polish. While you make great points, especially about the developer being a little green - that doesn't mitigate any complaints about the game, it actually makes them worse. Let the devs apologise for themselves by fixing issues.
@QwertyQwerty Right there with you. Microtransactions in a game equals no buy. Period. If the whole point of your game, that I paid for, is to act as one big marketing campaign for additional purchases ... well, you can pound sand. Am I right? Unfortunately, it also makes me less likely to consider future titles from devs/publishers that have done it.
I'd like to see the series continue with a mix of Skyward Sword + Breath of the Wild, with a more vibrant, full world. I'd also like the classic series to continue with the foundation of A Link Between Worlds to build on. ALttP, Link's Awakening, and the Oracle games are the standouts from the classic series, and taking cues from those would serve that iteration of that side of the franchise quite well. I don't care which system it would head to, 3DS or Switch. Continuing the series with one of each type, rather than trying to combine them together - that seems best.
(Twilight Princess was the lowest point of the series, I think. All of those linear hallway sections, no real sense of exploration. It was awful. It was followed by the horrendous DS entries. Bad time for Zelda all 'round.
Things picked up again with Skyward Sword, it felt like the game Twilight Princess should have been. A Link Between Worlds was excellent, with just enough deviation from the beloved ALttP, and just enough modern trappings to push the formula forward. Breath of the Wild is what it is. An amazing step forward once more. As far as I'm concerned, Minish Cap can pound sand.)
@JayJ - They didn't go under, and they didn't shut down. Two Tribes still very much exists. They just aren't making games any more. They look at themselves as dinosaurs. From a post last year, they said: "When running a company, you need to be on top of your game, not just in terms of the product you're making, but business-wise too," the post stated. "And we just aren't on top of the games business anymore."
On a totally different note, I wish more companies wrote their changelogs like this. I laughed at loud at "Now they look mesmerizing all of the time."
I pre-purchased Mutant Mudds, so that's today's guilty pleasure.
...and on the wishlist are Romancing SaGa 2, Hammerwatch, and Bleed, in descending order. Yooka-Laylee seems to be a love it or hate it kind of thing, so I'm not willing to risk it at full price.
@OorWullie - The Nintendo Vs. System, like the Playchoice-10, had PPUs that output a native RGB signal to arcade monitors. (The Playchoice-10 PPU can actually be swapped with the NES PPU for RGB output from the NES. - Fun fact.) The Vs. System needed individual PPUs with the correct colour palettes. Presumably the difference in video output was responsible for the cleaner signal. I'm no expert though.
So arguably, because Mutant Mudds is seeing a physical release, likely with the "Switch Tax" that download to physical games have...its score should decrease upon release? It will be a "full price release". Not a $79.99 release (Canadian here), but certainly a $39.99 release for us. Is the score of a game intrinsically linked to its retail value?
> Should games be reviewed and scored based on their price bracket?
> Should games be reviewed and scored based on whether they are boxed releases, eShop releases, or both, as is the case for many games?
> Do we pretend that there is a universal overarching "AAA" standard to which some games belong, and review those games on a separate scale?
> Do we assume that because a game only sees an eShop release, that it is automatically of a lower quality, and therefore should be reviewed on a separate scale?
> Should Nintendolife ape Famitsu, and adopt a four person review team, who each score a particular game on a XX point scale, while revealing their independent biases so that readers may choose which score resonates most with their own personal bias?
> Should Nintendolife adopt a "no score" policy, and simply review the game without ascribing a number? So many people simply scroll to the number, and can't help but comment when their personal bias has somehow been violated...would it be more valid to drop the score and protect that personal bias?
...or, should we just accept that the reviewer felt it was a 9/10, or in plain English, "worth playing"?
I look at Nintendolife scores like that. A highly rated game (8-10) is "worth playing". A mediocre rating (5-7) is "ok, but not a must". A poor rating (1-4) is "not really worth playing". Comparing review scores across games and genres is a no-win scenario. At the end of the day, different people prefer different games, and one person's 4 is another person's 10. Nintendolife is just wading through available games and offering one perspective. If it doesn't match yours ... well ... that's OK, isn't it? At least we all know a little bit more about the game before purchasing. The sea of games available right now needs a lighthouse, and I appreciate that someone is operating the light.
@RupeeClock The 8bitdo controllers have update-able firmware themselves, so even if for some reason they temporarily weren't working, the issue could be resolved on the other end.
My favourite motion control game on the Wii was "Elebits". My god that game was fun. I don't know about the absolute accuracy of the controls, but it's the most fun motion controlled game I've ever played.
I don't say this very often, but that game looks terrible...and I love the GBA. So much repetitive music, the hit box seems off, there's so many things. Eek. Maybe a remake would fare better.
Honestly, I don't even care if Nintendo does a virtual console at this point. Even if they do, this will be what, the third, fourth time we can buy the same old tired releases? No thanks. A subscription service for classic games? No thanks. There's too many games on the Switch to play already. Plus, they'll never be able to bring over titles that people want anyway. Licensing restrictions, defunct third-parties, third parties not on board, building out the emulator for each game, etc, etc. Bleh.
Nothing wrong with the 3DS - I hope it gets love for years to come. The system is damn near perfect! I love the Switch just like everyone else, but there's still lots of room in my life for the incredible library available on the 3DS. For instance, can't wait for Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, The Alliance Alive, Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Kirby: Battle Royale (in North America)...I'm happy to support developers still putting out quality games on the 3DS eShop. I think about Brian Provinciano and the Retro City Rampage debacle on the Wii eShop. Sure, the game is playable on even my toaster now, but great developers putting out great games? If I own the system, I'll support them.
I have thousands of coins, and they expire. I wish they didn't expire.
Please Nintendo, give us some newer games to spend coins on/get discounts for - many of us have already bought the older games you keep putting up. I'm holding out for Switch games, but the points expire so soon...I buy retail titles - what's the point of gold coins that expire when you have nothing to "spend" them on.
I'm one of the folks that loves these games. I own each and every single one of them. Ever since Lego Star Wars came out all those years ago. There's just something about them. They're quirky, funny, fun to play with friends. There's a sense of exploration about them, discovering new things, enjoying the lego-fied take on some popular movie franchises.
Some of the earlier games (Star Wars, Indian Jones, Batman) were love letters to their respective franchises, rich in detail and extras. Harry Potter was another. They haven't all been up to that level of quality, but still fun nonetheless. They're like warm apple pie - you know exactly what to expect, and it's exactly what you get.
Why, why, why, do third parties who make games like this squander the potential? An excellent four player party game would be a must-buy. Especially when there are so few options in the market right now. -This- is the trailer you put out? Where the games don't even use in-game footage, likely because they're that that bad?
Bonus points for the voiceover guy and the nicely timed "f..." though. It got a laugh...I don't know if it was because the trailer was so ridiculous, or if that just capped it off.
I think this looks fantastic on Switch, technicalities and all the other nonsense aside. For me, the criteria is not about FPS or shaders, or whatever the heck. Just, "is this game fun to play?" I want value for my entertainment dollar, not a swinging contest.
My problem with DOOM is that it's $89.58 after tax. That's where the no comes in. It's $50 less on Steam, and that's at regular price. (In Canada.) Then, there's whatever crazy price it's going to come down to in 2 weeks when the Steam winter sale hits.
I'd like to support this very much, because it looks fun to play and I haven't purchased it on any other platform - but not for $90.
...but seriously, if these guys can crank out one of these a week, with the additional features...I want more than just a straight emulation VC from Nintendo. The same releases that have showed up on Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, just isn't good enough.
I think this is the first system I've ever owned with too many good games coming out in too short of a period of time. I'd love to buy them all, but just can't justify the cost. The price pf physical games like Super Mario Odyssey is out of control, at $79.99 in Canada. Jesus! With a price tag like that, the eShop titles fall into the "I'd love to, but shiiiiiiiiiit", category you know?
I hope this isn't a systemic problem that will affect developers releasing titles to the Switch, because I can't be alone in this.
Favourite traditional 2D Mario is still Super Mario World, and it gets my vote for best because it is. I love all the 2D ones for different reasons. Making the distinction between favourite and best can be difficult, hence...
Favourite 3D Mario would be 3D World, because I found it played more like a 2D game, making it a bit more accessible. I gave the best to Galaxy 2 though. It was the culmination of everything that makes Mario, well - Mario, from both the 2D and 3D worlds. Brilliant game.
In all honesty, without a defined online structure yet, EA doesn't see the potential to monetize their games after release. Most of what's offered on Origin right now relies on DLC and IAPs. They can keep that garbage, even if some of those games are winners.
They do have another title coming in 2018, "Fe". It looks much more interesting than FIFA. I'm looking out for that.
@KO-Cub Yooka Laylee didn't bill itself as anything other than it was - a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie/DK64 collectathons, a nostalgia trip. The thing is, it ended up being worse than the games that inspired it.
I'd rather they made a Castlevania that wasn't called Castlevania, than a piss-poor spiritual successor that misses everything that makes the game inspiring it special.
@pattybean Symphony of the Night and Mirror of Fate are first cousins who slept with each other and birthed Bloodstained. Everybody so badly wanted this child, but to catch a glimpse of its face - well, that was something that nobody wanted to face.
@Zuljaras My favourite moment in SotN was the day I discovered the upside-down castle. Few games have ever had that "!!!" feeling, where everything you thought you knew was turned on its head (quite literally), and that the game you thought you'd beaten was only just beginning. No Castlevania game since has provided that feeling...and quite possibly, none ever will. I look forward to what they can accomplish with this Castlevania-that-isn't-Castlevania, but thus far, it just doesn't look that exciting.
Definitely has a SotN vibe to it...in fact, almost too much. Right down to the big cat running at the bottom, and how the sub-boss battle plays out. As excited as we all are for true-to-form Castlevania game, this gameplay demo isn't giving off that vibe. It looks forgettable.
I had this pre-ordered, but the negative reviews on Steam put me off and I cancelled it. Speaking of, It cost $6 on Steam 2 weeks ago. Hard to swallow the price even if it does have some Switch extras.
I bought Cave Story & Tiny Barbarian...love them...just so unsure about this one.
@Robotron2084 Yup. I'm a digital subscriber - super convenient. I back both Switch Player and Nintendo Force, simply because they're producing Nintendo-focused magazines, and a good magazine is such a rarity these days. I miss Nintendo Power.
I managed to snag this for a super low price on Amazon when I pre-ordered in January. So excited to play! The Switch is just drowning in excellent games, it's almost too much.
Now I know everyone expected it to review well, as everyone puts on their "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" pants, and generally geeks out over a new Mario title ... but I felt this review was a little thin. No slag on Nintendolife or the reviewer, just seems light on specifics. Might just be me.
I'd say in before cease and desist - but it's already out on Steam. It is such a direct rip-off of old-school Zelda, but if Nintendo won't do it, someone has to. I'd buy that right away on Day 1.
For fellow Canadians, 128GB microSD cards are regularly priced at $46 at Costco. Same card is $129.99 at Best Buy, which goes on sale for $99. It's a no-brainer.
Did anyone try Yono and the Celestial Elephants? It stars a freaking elephant, which is awesome, and looks old-school Zelda-ish, if old-school Zelda-ish was isometric, which is also awesome. There's so many games to play, and the switch is becoming a financial drain...but...did anyone buy it, or is it just irrelephant?
@Biff_ARMStrong - I had the same problem, couldn't find it available to order anywhere (I'm in BC, not Ontario) ... I ended up pre-ordering on Play-Asia (https://www.play-asia.com/88-heroes-98-heroes-edition/13/70bfit). It comes to $44.69 with taxes and the cheaper shipping option. Yes, it's more than the download version ... but personally, I don't mind paying a bit more to have the cart. Downloads should be cheaper anyway. Anyhow, enjoy!
I got notice that the pre-order physical shipped this morning, which was unexpected...Amazon was maintaining a late November release for the physical. Cool! I'm excited. There's been so many awesome titles on the Switch that diving in without knowing much about the game hasn't really been a detriment this far. No embarrassing purchases or regrets thus far.
I voted for Super Mario Odyssey, RiME, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2...but in addition to those, I have Snipperclips, Tiny Barbarian, and 88 Heroes pre-ordered. Hot damn, I am absolutely loving the Switch.

Re: Action-RPG Blossom Tales Is Set to Bloom on Switch eShop This Winter
I'd say in before cease and desist - but it's already out on Steam. It is such a direct rip-off of old-school Zelda, but if Nintendo won't do it, someone has to. I'd buy that right away on Day 1.
Re: Leif's Adventure: Netherworld Hero Will Make Its Debut on Nintendo Switch
You guys are rough...lol. I watched the trailer and thought: "I really like the art style, and it looks like fun."
Re: Elliot Quest Begins Its Switch Adventure This Week
It must be 2014, someone mentioned Ouya!
(Also, this looks awesome. That is all.)
Re: Guide: How to Use Two or More Micro SD Cards in Your Switch for Limitless Storage
For fellow Canadians, 128GB microSD cards are regularly priced at $46 at Costco. Same card is $129.99 at Best Buy, which goes on sale for $99. It's a no-brainer.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th October (North America)
Did anyone try Yono and the Celestial Elephants? It stars a freaking elephant, which is awesome, and looks old-school Zelda-ish, if old-school Zelda-ish was isometric, which is also awesome. There's so many games to play, and the switch is becoming a financial drain...but...did anyone buy it, or is it just irrelephant?
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th October (North America)
@Dang69 Thank you, should have mentioned Amazon as well. Unfortunately it's $54 for us poor Canucks to grab it from there, and I'm cheap.
Re: Nintendo Download: 12th October (North America)
@Biff_ARMStrong - I had the same problem, couldn't find it available to order anywhere (I'm in BC, not Ontario) ... I ended up pre-ordering on Play-Asia (https://www.play-asia.com/88-heroes-98-heroes-edition/13/70bfit). It comes to $44.69 with taxes and the cheaper shipping option. Yes, it's more than the download version ... but personally, I don't mind paying a bit more to have the cart. Downloads should be cheaper anyway. Anyhow, enjoy!
Re: Tiny Barbarian DX Gets a Rather Huge Soundtrack Release
This game is super fun. Loving it!
Re: Infinite Minigolf Gets a 30% Discount on the Switch eShop
With a discount, it's time to jump in and see how it is. So. Many. Courses!
Re: Tiny Barbarian DX Gets a Rather Huge Soundtrack Release
I got notice that the pre-order physical shipped this morning, which was unexpected...Amazon was maintaining a late November release for the physical. Cool! I'm excited. There's been so many awesome titles on the Switch that diving in without knowing much about the game hasn't really been a detriment this far. No embarrassing purchases or regrets thus far.
Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo Switch Retail Games of 2017 - Fall / Winter Edition
I voted for Super Mario Odyssey, RiME, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2...but in addition to those, I have Snipperclips, Tiny Barbarian, and 88 Heroes pre-ordered. Hot damn, I am absolutely loving the Switch.
