I bought one of those limited edition record soundtracks they had a while back. It's a cool collectible. I buy his game every time he puts it out on a platform I have, simply because of how Nintendo treated him with the version on the Wii eShop.
It looks super fun, that's probably the first one I'm going to try this week. The trailer cracked me up..."You can play as a SAUSAGE! (In a hat)" It's worth a go just for that.
I have the physical editions of Axiom Verge and Tiny Barbarian DX pre-ordered, but they don't come out until November 21 and November 30, respectively. So while I'm excited to play them, waiting for those copies will give a little bit of time to clear the backlog.
I must be one of the few who doesn't understand the draw to Stardew Valley. Can anyone who's played it on PC weigh in? It just seems like a Harvest Moon game, but you know, from a few years ago, back when the series had more freedom.
Most of the Switch updates this week are of interest and wishlisted...but last week was Golf Story, which is awesome, and I'm still finishing some retail carts, so they'll just have to wait.
A 10, wow! I'm glad I have the physical copy pre-ordered. In the absence of a true Castlevania title such as Symphony of the Night (still the best of the genre, and I'd buy it for the umpteenth time on the Switch in a heartbeat), I'll take as many of the genre as possible.
I actually am a pretty big fan of the Switch eShop implementation. It's super fast, touch and controller friendly, far more screenshots and videos than say, the 3DS version ... generally, the experience is very good.
As far as improvements go, I'd really love to see more demos. For example, Project Octopath - not on my radar at all. Then I played the demo, and it's on my list now. There are many games I would like to try before buying, especially since a lot of them sit at a $20 CDN price point + taxes. Just because many indies have been out on other systems or platforms, doesn't mean I've played it before, or that I automatically know enough to want to purchase it. Understandably, demos are not all up to Nintendo, but I'd love to see a system like the 360 had - mandatory demos, even if they were just time limited trials of the full games. I know that developers don't like demos because they can harm sales, but let me tell you, a crappy game or a game I don't like breeds no future sales. Also, demo feedback can allow a developer to make some changes that may end up creating a better game.
I would really, really, really love to see a cart system. I don't buy from the shop every week, but there are times when I go on and I want to grab a couple of games. Let me have a shopping cart!
Every online store, whether it's Switch, Steam, whatever - they all have discoverability problems, and no-one has managed to solve it successfully. However, the Switch eShop could desperately do with some category and/or genre tags at a bare minimum! There are so many NeoGeo releases, let's give them a #NeoGeo tag...and then a #Fighter tag, and a #BeatEmUp, and #Platformer, and #Nindie, and you get the idea. Tags are flexible in that one game can show up in multiple different categories. Say I want a strategy game, it would be great to click on that tag and see all of those games right away. Having to browse through all the games (while yes, the store isn't filled to bursting yet, but it will be) is aggravating, especially because game titles don't necessarily convey what kind of game they are.
I'm down with music in the shop as long as it changes like the 3DS eShop. The same tune all the time on repeat gets a permanent mute.
As far as the Switch eShop overall, they've definitely nailed the speed and simplicity, now it just needs some refinements. (As does the general UI once you've purchased a lot of games...but that's another story. )
Got it in Canada, and finally purchased it. I felt it was too expensive before, but with the discount, done! The Remix 10 mode is soooo good...love the music, the format, everything. Awesome addition to the game...and can't wait to actually go through the rest of the levels now. Those first four levels, I've played them so many times, and have all the coins from each run...exciting!
I'll be playing this while waiting in line for a SNES mini.
@Metroplex360 Yes, I own it. If it says "LEGO" in the title, I'm going to be all over it. I have this on PC as well. Equally enjoyable on both. It's not your standard TT Games LEGO romp, but there are many familiar elements from the mainline games.
Do you remember a game called "Scribblenauts" for the DS, or Hack 'n Slash for the PC? LW reminds me of both in many ways, because the game lets you play it your own way. Have to climb the beanstalk in the fairy tale world? Spawn a helicopter, FU beanstalk! See a chest that you want but can't get to? Remove the ground! Gosh, did you have to go through that dungeon? Nah, just remove the walls. The sense of free-roaming exploration you have (and there is a LOT to explore) coupled with absolutely everything being made from LEGO bricks and thus can be manipulated, is awesome. Some people probably won't feel the same, but I love it.
This looks really good...very gratuitous, even if it is just pixels. The only problem I have is the "super hard" part. When they're stupid hard, it's also hard to have fun. I know there are lots of folks that enjoy super hard games, but I'm unsure.
@Webheadd Thank you for your thoughts. It's true, taking it on the go is the biggest draw ... and there is touchscreen support ... might as well just hand my purse over to Nintendo this week!
@Drache_Kaiser I haven't bought any additional controllers for the Switch, have just been using the Joy-Cons that it came with. I updated the NES30 Pro precisely for that purpose - both Super Bomberman R and Puyo Puyo Tetris. What a difference. So worth it. I already had the NES30 Pro, so it felt even better not to have to dish out $100CDN for an official Pro controller.
Thanks to the heads up on this, I threw down for the early bird tier. Why not? There's still a month to go, and they're well over $50k already. Worst case is if for some reason I want to back out - but that's as easy as going to the Indiegogo contributions page and clicking 'Refund Order'. Best case is that it arrives and there's a very functional case on hand for my Switch.
Lots of skepticism around...which is fair...but what the hey. I like supporting creators, especially when they're solving problems for me — like being able to charge while playing in tabletop mode.
Reading the review, I didn't expect to see a 9/10 at the end! That definitely escalates it from "title I would have completely ignored" to "title that's made it on to my interested list". Thanks for the review.
@HawkeyeWii I had it pre-ordered (which got cancelled), then pre-ordered it again (and it got cancelled again). Gave up. Not going to camp outside of stores, or constantly check stock levels, or fight with resellers and scalpers. I figure if I walk into a store one day and it's on the shelf, I'll pick one up.
Whoa, whoa whoa...wait just a second here. You mean Classic Games Overload: Card & Puzzle Edition is actually not on sale this week? Whoa. It's like living in an alternate reality over here or something.
I'm with the folks that don't have access to Super Mario Run...iPhone exclusivity? Isn't the Android market larger at this point?
@readyletsgo @Baker1000 @enphos @sdelfin It says in the description: "Access the NES Classic Edition home screen by pressing DOWN & Select on the NES30 controller."
I want to see new games. Tired of ports, remakes, lazy iterations...and that's not a dig at Capcom specifically, just in general. If I'm buying a brand new piece of hardware, I want something new to play on it — not the same stuff I've already played!
Picross 3D: Round 2 is available here in NA, but in Canada it's almost $50 with taxes. I'm not one to ever complain about pricing, but geez...that's pretty steep. It's more expensive than most first party retail 3DS games.
I'll definitely be getting Super Mario Maker, Mario Party: Star Rush, Corpse Party, Cold Case Investigations, Severed, Antipole DX, Runbow Pocket, and Gurumin. That's already more than I have time for, so pretty happy over here.
I clicked on this review thinking it would be one of those slightly odd, relatively obscure to Western audiences, yet freshly localized JRPGs. Thanks for reviewing it — this one would have slipped under my radar for sure!
As a question to folks that are already playing...are you playing on the original 3DS, a (new) 3DS XL, or a New 3DS cover plate model? If the controls are considered a bit hand crampy, I'm curious if the size of the 3DS alleviates that at all.
@Darknyht Thank you for the code, it worked great! (I'm in Canada, by the way, where we don't have this promotion.)
The only amiibo I have at the moment is the Mario 30th Anniversary one, and it works as the "Mario" character and gives access to the Mario exclusive levels. Neat. I've wanted to pick up the Mario collection anyhow.
I agree that the prices feel a little on the high side. I'm in Canada, so it's over $11 for one of these SNES titles on N3DS. However, my own personal test for what I'm willing to pay centres around how much game I'm getting for the dollar. Even at $11, the amount of game contained in a title like Super Mario World outweighs the amount of game in many newer titles sold for more money. It's just a personal thing.
I ponied up the cash for Super Mario World because I absolutely love the game, and the allure of being able to play a perfectly emulated version of it on the go was too much. ...and it is perfect — plays perfect, looks perfect, sounds perfect. It's in my pocket. I'm happy. I'd be happy-ER if it were cheaper, but them's the breaks. They're offering something I'm happy to have, and it passes my own personal test for what I'm willing to pay for it.
At first, the Amiibo sounded like a good idea — but I figured even before they were out that Nintendo was not going to be able to keep up with demand. They never do, they constantly underestimate and under-deliver. It started in recent years with that 25th Anniversary Mario Collection for Wii, and got worse after that. I have no interest in the figures at all. The whole thing has degenerated into the worst kind of consumerism, and has really brought out the worst in some of the gaming community too. It's just gross all around. Oh, and the gold one looks incredibly tacky, I don't understand the demand for it at all.
Nintendo should sell them on their own site — list each one of the silly things, take as many orders as they need to do a production run, produce, rinse, repeat until there's no more demand. It's not rocket science. Retailers should not have to suffer the brunt of customer dissatisfaction — it's not their fault.
In some places with multiple turns, drifting is not a good option for exactly the reason you mentioned, @Tsurii897 . I find I'm playing 200CC like the SNES/GBA versions of F-Zero...accelerator at all times, except when taking hard turns: then I let up on the gas, drift around the corner, and then hit the gas mid way through the corner. There have been a few moments now where I've purposely nerfed my drifts to prevent gaining that speed boost, haha.
200CC has really breathed new life into Mario Kart, period! I see a lot of people around the web (not just here on NL) talking about needing to add braking into their skill sets. That's definitely one way to do it, but I find you still don't have to brake in 200CC. Most people probably take every corner on every track in a drift...the key to not braking in 200CC is to form your drifts a bit earlier than you're used to. You can start drifting well before the corners, and due to the speed difference, you whip around them in a way that you can't quite do in the slower modes.
@Captain_Toad I imagine the difference in price has to do with the Blu-ray Disc Association and their royalty fees. Sony and Microsoft both pay royalties on each console and on each disc to the BDA that Nintendo does not have to pay because their discs are a proprietary format. I don't know if that accounts for the entire price difference, but it's definitely a factor.
