The article sub heading has proved problematic. I get that it's a positive counter to the previous article, but the negative subheading and a few inaccuracies was always going to lead to comment section meltdown. For the first time in 10 years, I wont be playing Mario Kart online. I appreciate the 'free' online time I've had, but I'm not subscribing for such a barebones service. The games on offer don't really interest me, and any that did I've bought more than once previously on Nintendo hardware. Their handling of most online matters has been for generations average at best. Unified account promised last gen? I've got games on my Wii U and 3DS that I would pay to access on my Switch. I'm sure Ninty will have better cards to play in the future, but at the moment I'm out.
Nope. Not going to scratch the Pilotwings itch. Come on Ninty, get making a new one or just a HD upgrade of the N64 game. Bought a Wii U at launch and felt sure Pilotwings would soon follow. Doh.
I want Pocket Card Jockey on my Switch. Make it happen Ninty! Outside of that I would love to see updates of Wave Race, Star Tropics and Excitebike. Not likely I know. A slim chance we might get a glimpse of what Retro has been working on.....
No. Both have pushed more power and improved visuals as their main selling point. If either released a hybrid or a handheld it would flop and I doubt they would have the IP to carry such a system on their own.
It costs me £36 a year to play my XBONE online. It costs me £46 a year to play my PS4 online. It's going to cost me £18 to play my NS online. So, Nintendo will be 50% cheaper than other console makers. Not interested in 'free' games from any of them - Nintendo is the cheapest for online gaming. Should still be free to play online on any console though.
A great game, one of Retro's best. Loading times on the Wii U were shocking though. Not going to buy the game again myself but for anybody who hasn't played it, an essential Switch release.
@gatorboi352 Labo released 5 days ago in the US, not out until 27th in the UK. Number 1 & 3 in the Japanese charts. So cliff and falling is stretching it a bit, even for you.
EA will only play if they get paid. Been that way since PS1/N64 era. Nintendo will not pay so they will not get. If EA had any real intentions of supporting NS they would have announced a load of games already. Instead we've got a gimped Fifa and an indie platformer. Their support of the Wii U, as poor as it was, was greater than their support of the Switch to date. Personally, I don't care. PES is better than Fifa, Sims is ruined, Burnout Paradise was bad when it originally released - and I cannot recall any game from EA in the last few years that hasn't had issues, or controversy, with it.
@SuperKMx I'm sure they will, at some point. Nintendo will probably have a mini-direct to summarise what's on offer in the future, there are a few million new Switch owners now. However, their handling of online with NS has been lacklustre at best. This announcement confirms that whatever service it is, has been delayed from the original planned date. At the moment £20 a year for P2P gaming and a few old games doesn't seem like good value.
What about all our eShop purchases on WIIU and 3DS Nintendo? Unified account my arse. If they expect people to pay for online they really need to start giving us some details about the structure and content of the service.
@WiltonRoots Yep. It's started already. Gutted none of my predictions were correct, I don't think my Uncle really works at Nintendo..... On a serious note, I think this is a great move by Nintendo as long as pricing and content are decent. If kids can make their own creations as well I could see it really taking off.
Switch Sports, Nintendo Lego, Amiibo Infinity, Pokemon Holodex or something like that. Mobile - Switch integration? If peripheral based, could be Switch Fit or (in my dreams) Warioware related. Whatever it is will obviously be gimmicky and aimed at casuals.
A few new games announced in a mini direct (Dark Souls yes!), not too shabby. Expect a maxi direct before March with meatier reveals including South Park Fractured But Whole (March release?) and more info on the upcoming games we know about. As for the ports, DKTF definitely deserves a bigger audience than it reached on the Wii U; it's one of the best games of recent years in my opinion.
The old 3rd party/Ninty conundrum. Nintendo make hardware for themselves, to create the games they want. Always have, always will. 3rd party support was there for the SNES, but then lessened each subsequent generation. Howard Lincoln paid EA for support during the N64 era and Iwata did the same when the Gamecube was floundering. Didn't make one bit of difference, most gamers stuck with Playstation in the knowledge that the games would come. This is still true to this day. So, for 20 years Nintendo hardware has struggled to attract 3rd party support regardless of hardware power or sales. Has this harmed Nintendo as a business? Not really. A shaky year or two with the 3DS and Wii U, otherwise printing money. Do people who buy Nintendo consoles expect decent western third party support? In the main, no, they buy Nintendo to play Nintendo.
Makes sense this iteration of COD and several other AAA games aren't coming to Switch ; these games will have been in development for nearly 2 years. The devs involved will have had access to Switch dev kits for maybe 15 months, probably a few months less. It should be obvious to most there would be little parity in AAA releases with PS4/XBOX at this stage in the NS lifespan. Whether parity is there in the post holiday period remains to be seen.
Nintendo consoles have struggled to secure AAA third party support since the end of the SNES era. This issue was only ever going to get worse with each generation as development of AAA games got bigger and more expensive.
Like @westman98 said, with MK8D, Arms and Splatoon 2 the future months look a lot brighter than those that followed the Wii U's launch. Mario Kart and Splatoon 2 will shift a few million units easily. Mario Odyssey and the next Sports upgrade should continue momentum through the Xmas holidays. In the future, more games using the new Zelda engine; next Pikmin, Metroid and Punch Out; new IP like ARMS; more RPG's. I think Nintendo could shift 70 million units lifetime, probably nearer 80, with ease.
Communication on this from The Official Nintendo UK Store (run by The Hut) has been poor. All emails should have been sent weeks ago. Still not sure whether mine will arrive tomorrow or next week. To be fair, ordered plenty from them before and not had any issues. Fingers crossed for everyone.
"but it has nevertheless been latched onto by some news outlets, who seemingly cite it as evidence that the Switch is cursed to suffer the same fate as the Wii U" Yep, and Nintendo Life (part of the Eurogamer network) along with third party apologists and company meatbots will help spread the negativity. Nintendo will be hoping that just under three months of rumour-mongering and muck-spreading doesn't do as much damage to Switch as the year or so's worth of disinformation/gossip that abetted the Wii U's failure.
Well, the internet got what it wanted - Nintendo to become more like PS/MS. As long as Ninty throw millions at marketing Switch then people will snap it up, along with the majority of Nintendo fans. Personally, I think it is priced too high here in the UK, the initial games outside of BOTW hold little interest, and no pack in game is a disappointment. However, I thought the same about the PS4 and apparently that's a massive success.
Nintendo had to ensure success for the 3DS after it's slow start , thus neglecting the Wii U from a software point of view. They knew within the first 16 months the Wii U wasn't going to sell as they hoped. Then the factory that made the custom chips was bought by Sony , with rumours claiming less than 20 million chips made. At that point in time Nintendo rightly reasoned that they would be better investing in their next console rather than spending more money on producing hardware that was pretty much doomed (by the internet) before launch. The major lesson Nintendo learnt from the Wii U was to not reveal too early - as now evidenced by NX , much to the internets chagrin.
I think the main problem in this instance was it's reveal at E3. I have sympathy for Next Level , who have made some decent games in the past , but due to the whole backlash will have people ignore or boycott the game just because it's not the Metroid that some people want.
Boo hoo. Nintendo didn't make the game I wanted and I'm indignant !! Also , commenters need to understand the meaning of ad hominem and entitlement. They also need to understand that sometimes Nintendo make games that are not meant for them. Once they grasp this , they might not feel the need to type paragraphs full of malinformed nonsense.
The slow start to the 3DS led to Nintendo's near abandonment of the Wii U. They had to make sure the 3DS was a success , because handhelds and Japan are , and always have been , Nintendo's main focus. Third and First party droughts then killed all launch momentum. The Wii U was definitely a stop gap system , soft marketed and released while Nintendo were merging R&D and dev teams as a plan for the future. The fact that it ended up selling 13 million should be seen as a result. The system was doomed by the Internet before it even released ( hence Nintendo's super secrecy around NX ) Once Smash Bros and MK8 failed to create momentum , Nintendo knew that goose was cooked. Nintendo have no competitor in the handheld market , they could easily make the gen last 10 years with the N3DS like they did with the GBC. They are third with Wii U but making a small profit. If they release a PS4 beater in March they would still finish third , and incurr more losses. That is not going to happen. NX platform ("always a platform not a console") will allow Nintendo to focus all their efforts on one ecosystem and attract new consumers with a low price point. I have a 3DS and Wii U , so of course I'm excited for NX. We will know more in the coming months. I only care about the games , and history tells me I can rely on Nintendo to come up with the goods.
I think this is a great idea. Nintendo's name is cropping up everywhere due to Pokemon Go , drop this retro toy before the holidays and push the IP. Includes some third party titles as well as some genuine classic Nintendo games. Some negativity , as always , in the comments. In my opinion you cannot compare what Nintendo have done here with the latest iterations of the Sega / Atari plug and plays. This is Nintendo's first attempt ( outside the iQue ) and there is one major difference - Nintendo is still making dedicated gaming hardware that allows users to access their older games. Of course they are not going to let you download roms for free and play them on this. Of course they didn't put a cartridge slot in that allowed you to play Nes carts - they don't make any money from used games and the extra costs would make the price point a lot less attractive. The amount of people who think Nes cart support is a deal breaker , although vociferous here , are in reality a very small minority and not the target audience for this product.
Well if this is what so called Nintendo 'fans' think of Shigsy , what would the haters say ? A few missteps in an unrivalled 30+ years of game design and now he must go. Not only are some peoples attitudes to Nintendo on the Internet somewhat xenophobic , they are now ageist towards Nintendo's hierarchy. The ramblings of the ill informed are as strong as always in the comments section of NL.
The so called failure that was the Gamecube increased Nintendo's profits by 40%. Nintendo 'paid' for certain Western third party games to appear on the system ; the GC gen , as far as I'm aware , was the last generation they did this. They made more money from Wii Play and Brain Training than Playstation did the entire lifespan of the PS3. Two games made them over a billion dollars. Microsoft have lost billions pushing the XBox since its inception. Nintendo are , by some distance , the least likely of the three platform providers to go third party / exit hardware.
@JaxonH Agree 100%. I think the Gamepad been so divisive from before launch , with a few other issues , has hampered the Wii U both in sales terms and how the games have been reviewed. DKTF and MK8 were criticised for not utilising the Gamepad and then W101 , StarFox and Kirby were criticised for forcing a gimmick. If Zelda U arrives and is as good as we hope , I will be happy with what Nintendo managed to bring to the Wii U in the context of them having to support two consoles almost single handedly.
@JaxonH Thanks man ! I get peoples disappointment with the Wii U , I do , but I have genuinely had my moneys worth out of it. Hell , if I had only bought Mario Kart and Splatoon I would have still had my moneys worth in terms of entertainment per hour. I've still got Xenoblade and Yoshi in my backlog along with the many 3DS and XBox One games I've still yet to play !
@Kirk The fact you do not see the irony of throwing fanboy and conspiracy theorist accusations around has given me a chuckle , so thanks for that. Also , I wasn't 'crying' , I was merely pointing out I had replied to the email notifications rather than your re-drafted posts. Regarding your editing and my cherrypicking ; I responded to the one sentence email , you changed that to three paragraphs. In future I will wait a while before responding.
It's not editing , that tends to imply trimming. Several times you have added blocks of text that change the context and parameters of the original comment , and thus change the context of replies. DKTF is Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and in my opinion it's one of the best games on the Wii U.
@Kirk Well done , the old fanboy accusation / insult. One of your 'go to' responses.
EDIT - And yet again you stealth edit your posts with a wall of text after your original response.
EDIT - I responded to your original comment which was : "Well, until you collect them all the do some work averaging them out and whatever else to gather some further objective date, that's just your inner fanboy dribbling."
The fact you stealth edited it after my response tells me all I need to know about how you operate on this site.
@Kirk Nope , not truth at all. Opinion. Subjective. What of the hundreds of other reviews that are not on aggregate sites ? Are only reviews on aggregate sites worth consideration ? Did you buy hundreds of magazines back in the halcyon days of the SNES to ensure the game you were buying was great ? Were you always in agreement with every review they published ? Did you never like a game that got less than 8 in Nintendo Power ? The fact and truth that this is all opinion is the main thing you seem to be struggling with. I was just showing how easy it is to cherry pick and manipulate reviews into backing up any statement. I don't think StarFox looks like a great game. But , I didn't think DKTF looked like a great game , yet in my opinion it is. I also think it's the pinnacle of the series , better than the SNES games. Shocking , I know.
“Expertly orchestrated action” Metro - 8/10 “An essential addition to your library” The Independent - 4/5 “The new controls succeed spectacularly” N-Europe - 9/10 There you go. A great game. Fact.
@Kirk That's the thing , these kids have only had the game a few hours. Other professional reviewers have finished the game despite it's ' broken ' controls , and also managed to write an actual review of the game. Do you normally regard Polygon reviews with esteem ? I can find a 10 / 10 review of Devil's third , does that mean it's definitely one of the best games in the world ? The fact that the game in question is Starfox and by Nintendo is of no relevance - I would still question the professionalism of the reviewer if it was any other game on any other system. There are plenty of smoke and mirrors in life , especially on the internet.
@Kirk Do you honestly believe this reviewer found the controls so frustrating and annoying that he couldn't play enough of a 6 hour game to write a review ? Kids on Miiverse are saying the motion controls are easy and reviewers need to ' git gud '. It's all a bit Wonderful 101 / Kid Icarus / Splatoon in my opinion. I think the reviewer ( and Polygon ) knew the controversy ( R.I.P Prince ) surrounding the controls and this is merely clickbait / attention seeking.
@Kirk Glad you find it funny - humour doesn't appear to be your thing from your many posts on here. I'm certainly not a bruised fanboy , I will wait until I have tried the game before making my judgement. Like someone commenting earlier said , this is akin to a film journalist walking out of a film 10 minutes in and slating its plot , character development and length. If you are paid to review something surely you should put the time in to provide a worthy , reasoned critique ? If this was a game you were interested in , or had played and enjoyed , would you even quote Polygon ?

They made more money from Wii Play and Brain Training than Playstation did the entire lifespan of the PS3. Two games made them over a billion dollars. Microsoft have lost billions pushing the XBox since its inception. Nintendo are , by some distance , the least likely of the three platform providers to go third party / exit hardware.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
@JaxonH Agree 100%. I think the Gamepad been so divisive from before launch , with a few other issues , has hampered the Wii U both in sales terms and how the games have been reviewed. DKTF and MK8 were criticised for not utilising the Gamepad and then W101 , StarFox and Kirby were criticised for forcing a gimmick. If Zelda U arrives and is as good as we hope , I will be happy with what Nintendo managed to bring to the Wii U in the context of them having to support two consoles almost single handedly.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
@JaxonH Thanks man ! I get peoples disappointment with the Wii U , I do , but I have genuinely had my moneys worth out of it. Hell , if I had only bought Mario Kart and Splatoon I would have still had my moneys worth in terms of entertainment per hour. I've still got Xenoblade and Yoshi in my backlog along with the many 3DS and XBox One games I've still yet to play !
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
@Kirk The fact you do not see the irony of throwing fanboy and conspiracy theorist accusations around has given me a chuckle , so thanks for that. Also , I wasn't 'crying' , I was merely pointing out I had replied to the email notifications rather than your re-drafted posts. Regarding your editing and my cherrypicking ; I responded to the one sentence email , you changed that to three paragraphs. In future I will wait a while before responding.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
It's not editing , that tends to imply trimming. Several times you have added blocks of text that change the context and parameters of the original comment , and thus change the context of replies. DKTF is Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and in my opinion it's one of the best games on the Wii U.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
@Kirk Well done , the old fanboy accusation / insult. One of your 'go to' responses.
EDIT - And yet again you stealth edit your posts with a wall of text after your original response.
EDIT - I responded to your original comment which was : "Well, until you collect them all the do some work averaging them out and whatever else to gather some further objective date, that's just your inner fanboy dribbling."
The fact you stealth edited it after my response tells me all I need to know about how you operate on this site.
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
Re: Guide: Getting Started With Star Fox Zero and Mastering the Controls
“Expertly orchestrated action” Metro - 8/10
“An essential addition to your library” The Independent - 4/5
“The new controls succeed spectacularly” N-Europe - 9/10
There you go. A great game. Fact.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@Kirk That's the thing , these kids have only had the game a few hours. Other professional reviewers have finished the game despite it's ' broken ' controls , and also managed to write an actual review of the game. Do you normally regard Polygon reviews with esteem ? I can find a 10 / 10 review of Devil's third , does that mean it's definitely one of the best games in the world ? The fact that the game in question is Starfox and by Nintendo is of no relevance - I would still question the professionalism of the reviewer if it was any other game on any other system. There are plenty of smoke and mirrors in life , especially on the internet.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@Kirk Do you honestly believe this reviewer found the controls so frustrating and annoying that he couldn't play enough of a 6 hour game to write a review ? Kids on Miiverse are saying the motion controls are easy and reviewers need to ' git gud '. It's all a bit Wonderful 101 / Kid Icarus / Splatoon in my opinion. I think the reviewer ( and Polygon ) knew the controversy ( R.I.P Prince ) surrounding the controls and this is merely clickbait / attention seeking.
Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
@Kirk Glad you find it funny - humour doesn't appear to be your thing from your many posts on here. I'm certainly not a bruised fanboy , I will wait until I have tried the game before making my judgement. Like someone commenting earlier said , this is akin to a film journalist walking out of a film 10 minutes in and slating its plot , character development and length. If you are paid to review something surely you should put the time in to provide a worthy , reasoned critique ? If this was a game you were interested in , or had played and enjoyed , would you even quote Polygon ?
