Re: Talking Point: E3 Highlighted Nintendo's Development Shift Towards NX, and Away from Wii U

kingofthesofa

@FragRed There wasn't much wrong with the Wii U's launch ; the problems arose in the following months. Claiming the PS4 had a strong list of first party games when it launched is stretching the truth a bit in my opinion.
Nobody outside of Nintendo knows what NX is , or when it is coming. How many third parties will be still in business when it launches ? Will Sony and Microsoft be making new consoles ? Will other players be in the hardware market ?
The Wii U has some interesting games coming over the next few months , with more likely to follow. I think this Christmas holiday will be the last chance for the Wii U to attain Gamecube level sales. Nintendo need to cut the price to below £179 for the 32GB console with a top tier game ; advertise the fact that Wii games and peripherals can be used with it ; emphasise the creative uses for the gamepad ; sort their account system / cross buy out. As a foot note , this site and others made a big deal of Reggie's comments about Metroid , but didn't report on a comment he made later in the same interview :
"I hope that your readers are excited about games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, a big massive game. We’ve created quite a series of hits in the RPG area on our 3DS business. We think we can replicate that on the Wii U business. That’s something we’re looking aggressively at.”

Re: Splatoon Has Inked 1 Million In Sales Since Its Release

@Yorumi I wouldn't say the imbalance between weapons is massive , although it does exist. I think it's more noticeable in Turf War than in Ranked Battle. Different tactics for different weapons and different maps. From my playing experience , most sessions are varied and you can see players adjusting their strategies as play goes on. I think the matchmaking could be improved though ; your rank should be more to do with your performance rather than the teams. Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Tackles Metroid Prime: Federation Force and amiibo Criticism

kingofthesofa

@Hordak I've been wondering the same. This is one of the perils of the internet ; no journalistic integrity or newsworthiness required to publish an article. It's all about the clicks. When and where did anybody from Nintendo actually confirm that the NX is Wii U's successor ? The original quote regarding NX came from Iwata during the DENA announcement and also included an infographic that showed the NX alongside the Wii U and the 3DS :
“ As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business , let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX’ "
He also told investors recently at an officially translated meeting :
" Because we are calling it a 'new concept' , we are not thinking of this as a 'simple replacement' for the 3DS or the Wii U "
One has to assume that everything else is opinion and speculation until proven otherwise ; yet people are stating as fact that NX is the Wii U's replacement and is coming in 2016. The main supporting evidence for this now indisputable fact is that Nintendo didn't show any Wii U games for late 2016 , or show anything of the new Zelda. Even though they clearly stated before , then reiterated after , that they were only showing upcoming games.

Re: Exclusive: We Almost Got A Wii U F-Zero Created By Burnout Studio Criterion

kingofthesofa

A pity , but it wouldn't have shifted many more consoles. The N64 game was good , but I thought the Gamecube version was sublime , even better than Wipeout in my opinion. I honestly believe Nintendo would have released a HD upgrade if Fast Racing Neo didn't exist. The treehouse footage of FRN looked pretty good for an alpha build. I hope Nintendo give the game and the developers the support they deserve. It was also a pity that Most Wanted U was sent out to die by EA , then the Criterion team was split.

Re: Tablets Stole The Wii U's Thunder, Laments Shigeru Miyamoto

kingofthesofa

Again , the disinformation continues. When and where did anybody from Nintendo actually confirm that the NX is Wii U's successor ? The original quote and info regarding NX came from Iwata during the DENA announcement and also included an infographic that showed the NX alongside the Wii U and the 3DS - “ As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename ‘NX,’ " He also told investors recently at an officially translated meeting - " Because we are calling it a 'new concept' , we are not thinking of this as a 'simple replacement' for the 3DS or the Wii U " One has to assume that everything else is opinion and speculation until proven otherwise ; yet people are stating as fact that NX is the Wii U's replacement and is coming in 2016. The main supporting evidence for this now indisputable fact is that Nintendo didn't show any Wii U games for late 2016 , or show anything of the new Zelda. Even though they clearly stated before and reiterated after that they were only showing upcoming games.
Shigsy , the major issue with the tablet is that it is not sleek enough in appearance. By the time it came to market it appeared clunky and dated. Maybe it should have had a capacitive touch screen instead of a resistive one , but I'm guessing that Nintendo went capacitive to keep in line with the DS range. There are several issues with Nintendo's handling of the Wii U , but not particularly with the console itself. In fact , one could argue that it is the only true 'next gen' console on the market. The Wii U has very low power consumption ( because , environment ) and is a dedicated gaming device that has introduced a new way to play. People say the gamepad is a gimmick , but Microsoft and Sony were quick to announce their interpretations of it - with added latency. Every piece of hardware since the SNES / MD era has had a gimmick to help sell it.
People also moan about the amount and type of games Nintendo make , but they are supporting two consoles on their own. Sony cannot be bothered to support the Vita , even though they have the most third party support of any console maker. Yet , Nintendo get the hate. People went crazy at this years E3 when Microsoft announced 360 backwards compatibility for a selection of games on XBox One ; yet nobody mentions that the Wii U was backwards compatible with 99% of Wii games AND its controllers from launch. People shout for Nintendo to go third party , but Sony and Microsoft are more likely to go software only than Nintendo. They are currently selling gimped PCs ; if they could protect against piracy adequately they would already be selling their software on PC only , DRM'd up to the hilt along with EA and Ubisoft etc. They have lost billions between them selling hardware. Why would Nintendo write off the profits they make on their hardware ? Why would they nearly half the profits of their software ? In every other line of business profit rules , except in gaming , according to internet fanboys. Then it's about how many units sold. Until Nintendo sell the most. Then it doesn't count because of gimmicks. Or it's a fluke. Or it was only bought by casuals and grandmas. Apologies for the long post. Please understand. Staaaay fresh.

Re: Editorial: Cheer Up, There Are Some Exciting Games on the Way

kingofthesofa

@Quorthon Nintendo going third party makes no business sense. Sony and Microsoft are more likely to go software only than Nintendo. They are currently selling watered down PCs ; if they could protect against piracy adequately they would already be selling their software on PC only , DRM'd up to the hilt. Why would Nintendo write off the profits they make on their hardware ? Why would they half the profits of their software ? They would have to sell , roughly , twice as many copies as they do now for the same profit. Do you think they would sell enough copies of Mario Party , Kirby , Yoshi , Captain Toad et al on PS4 to make the same profit ? Of course they wouldn't. The odd game like Zelda might sell more , but the majority wouldn't. In every realm of business profit is king , except in gaming according to fanboys like you. Then it's about how many units sold. Until Nintendo sell the most. Then it doesn't count because of gimmicks , or it's a fluke. Or it was only bought by casuals and grandmas. When the Playstation and XBOX brands make the same profit over a sustained period of time as Nintendo has , then you might have a case for Nintendo going 3rd party.

Re: Take More Risks With Your eShop Purchases, Pleads Nintendo's Damon Baker

kingofthesofa

@Quorthon Before the disappointment with the Digital Event there was a slight art to the nonsense in your long winded posts - now you are full on trolling.
" One way that Sony and Microsoft have attracted indies to their systems is by offering partial funding or paying for timed exclusivity "
So , having shrunk the amount of third party development over the past two generations with palm greasing and back handing , they are now doing the same with the indies. To Damon Baker ; consumers need to buy clothes and food , they don't need to buy games. It is up to us how we spend our money. If you want to help the indies shift some games why didn't you do a sizzle reel in your E3 presentation ? Instead of showing Skylanders and Amiibo that will sell whether you feature them or not. Better still , why don't you have a word with your boss and try and sort cross buy out ?

Re: Satoru Iwata Didn't Apologise For Nintendo's E3 Digital Event, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

kingofthesofa

@Yorumi I agree to some extent ; Nintendo seem to , ironically , only advertise their well known IP. Hopefully , with the reaction to Splatoon that has had some effort put into its marketing , this might improve in the future. I actually saw adverts for it on UK television - and not just on Cartoon Network ! At this point in time , Animal Crossing and Mario Maker are more likely to shift a few systems and make their budgets back than a new Metroid. With Starfox I'm still hopeful. With FZero , I honestly think Nintendo are holding off due to Fast Racing Neo.

Re: Satoru Iwata Didn't Apologise For Nintendo's E3 Digital Event, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

kingofthesofa

Of course he didn't apologise for showing a few games that some people didn't like ; BP took days to apologise for spilling huge volumes of oil into the ocean. Yes the Digital Event was poor for a lot of people , but , consumers at large are more interested in Animal Crossing , Mario Tennis and Amiibo than Metroid. For the cost and potential sales , it really is a no brainer for Nintendo. Personally , I would love a new Metroid - but I would never sign a petition to get a game cancelled just because it had Metroid in the title. A game that we know next to nothing about. I feel sorry for Next Level whose game is probably going to get ignored and slated just because it isn't a true Metroid. One preview says that Starfox controls are iffy , it is now fact ? The Wii U has already had some great games ; there are some more potentially great games coming in the next six months. Nintendo could have improved their E3 reaction by showing trailers for Fatal Frame , Fast Racing Neo and Devil's Third during the Digital Event. They also should have ended with a surprise reveal instead of a montage of mario musical nonsense. However , they still showed more gameplay and games than any other first party studio as far as I could see.

Re: First Impressions: Our Maiden Flight In Star Fox Zero Prompts Mixed Emotions

kingofthesofa

@kyuubikid213 Nice one , GRAFIX ROOL !
I thought Starfox looked a little rough graphically when watching yesterday , and commented as much straight after the Digital Event. However , I then remembered how rough Super Mario World and Hyrule Warriors looked at first , compared to how they released , then got over it. Watching the Treehouse presentation I thought some of the gameplay ideas seemed intriguing , especially the swapping of vehicles. Plenty of time for Nintendo to polish this up.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 Digital Event?

kingofthesofa

@Franklin
"cos i don't buy a console who's not even supported by its 1st party maker"
So , no Sony or Microsoft for you then
I get the disappointment with the digital event , I do , but the amount of vitriol been unleashed is ridiculous. As usual with Nintendo , most of the disappointment stems from our own expectations of what we think they might show. Anybody selling their Wii U because of one Digital Event is overreacting on a massive scale in my opinion. From now until Xmas there are roughly a dozen games coming to Wii U. Super Mario Maker , Xenoblade , Fatal Frame and Devil's Third will be here soon. Two of those are nailed on great , the other two have potential. There will probably be a direct in a couple of months with some new game announcements from Nintendo. Miyamoto has confirmed Zelda is still coming to Wii U. Calm down people , calm down.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 Digital Event?

kingofthesofa

@FlaygletheBagel
I personally still don't think NX will be released until 2017 , although I can understand why people think it might be on the shelves before then. This E3 has been pretty meh overall for me. From a Nintendo point of view , the Digital Event set off well with Starfox , muppets and Zelda 3DS, but then meandered to a finish. The pacing was off. I do think Super Mario Maker and a suitable price cut could shift a few consoles , but they should have had less developer chat and shown trailers for Devils Third and Fatal Frame instead. The Shin Megami trailer didn't have full subtitles. The Skylanders and Amiibo stuff should have been swapped with the Smash Bros and Nindie Demo announcement from before E3. Xenoblade still looks great to me , but that Animal Party Crossing Mash Up Thingy , not sure. The 3DS fared a lot better in my opinion. I think people are disappointed because there wasn't many new Wii U games shown , and the Metroid game wasn't from Retro and on Wii U ; but this is not the worst E3 Nintendo's ever had. If anything they played it too safe overall. Still hoping for a surprise or two during the next few days.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 Digital Event?

kingofthesofa

Shocked at how little new stuff was shown , although I appreciate they stated it was for upcoming games only. Starfox still looks a bit rough. Xenoblade still looks great. What have Retro been working on or have Nintendo just been holding them hostage ? Should have cut the developer chat and shown trailers for Devil's Third and Fatal Frame. Mario Tennis was a surprise , but why bother ? Mario Strikers would have been a better idea in my opinion. Still hoping more announcements will be made during the next few days , but so far so meh.

Re: Feature: Our Hopes and Dreams for Nintendo at E3 2015

kingofthesofa

@IceClimbers
So Sony have "won" with a PS3 game , a remake and a kickstarter ? LMAO.
There is no way Shenmue 3 can be made for two million dollars ; not to the scale of the previous games anyway. I fear for The Last Guardian as well ; games that spend so long in development rarely live up to expectations.

Re: Feature: Our Hopes and Dreams for Nintendo at E3 2015

kingofthesofa

@furryfoxman
Great list !! Also hoping for ; Excitebike U with track editor ; Pokken Fighter U confirmation ; NintendoLand DLC ; Geist sequel ; Pilotwings U ; Fast Racing Neo release date and information on what Retro , Next Level , Platinum and Tantalus have been working on.

Re: 3DS Hits 15 Million Sales Landmark in the US

kingofthesofa

@Quorthon
So you are more interested in something that cannot be quantified ? I know many Microsoft fans who bought more than 3 Xbox 360s and several Playstation fans who bought 2 or more PS3s - so by extrapolation of my experience , if all Microsoft and Playstation fans are like this , then their sales figures must be millions out.
"It's not really worth celebrating if you're just reselling the things to the same people over and over again " Why ? It's all profit ; whether one person buys three consoles or three people buy one - the end result is the same , money in the bank.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach is Often Peculiar, Yet That's An Enduring Strength

kingofthesofa

@EngieBengie
I put it in capital letters to emphasise why I replied to you , after you asked me why I replied to you. I don't see how that is exaggerating.
True , the Wii U is different and it's not selling well at all , but the Wii was different and sold a lot. Nintendo have tried something new. Sometimes it works ( NES / Wii / DS ) and sometimes it doesn't ( Virtual boy , Wii U )

Re: Poll: We Need to Talk About amiibo - Where Do You Stand?

kingofthesofa

@Technosphile
Totally agree , well said. The store exclusivity deals just exacerbate the problems with scalpers. I have no problem with Amiibo as collectables or unlocking costumes etc. , but I do have a problem with them when they are locking away actual game content as with Splatoon. Nintendo should let people download the costume dlc etc through the eshop ; say a few weeks after the Amiibos release at retail. This way , if people couldn't get hold of a figure they could still have the content if important to them. Hopefully some of the issues with Amiibo will be addressed during E3.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach is Often Peculiar, Yet That's An Enduring Strength

kingofthesofa

@EngieBengie
I assumed I'd upset you with the level of vitriol you directed at me in your subsequent comments. I replied to you originally because you posted " SAY IT TO MY FACE " after I made a jokey comment in reply to Action 51 - for which I apologise. Racism , homophobia etc. upset me on the internet , yes ; but comments and opinions on forums and message boards about inanimate objects do not. As a side note " Fact- Being different doesn't make you the best. Example: WiiU BAM! " isn't really a fact , is it ? It's an opinion and subjective to context.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach is Often Peculiar, Yet That's An Enduring Strength

kingofthesofa

@EngieBengie
I deleted the comment because as I typed it you had posted comment #91 which was actually quite articulate. The posts I was responding to were : " Being different doesn't make you the best. Just sayin'. " and
" something I said bugging you, pal? "
Where are the facts and arguments in these posts ? How am I supposed to argue these facts ? I was joking , more than attacking , in my reply to Action 51. Apologies for upsetting you but perhaps you need to heed your own advice ; " If you can't handle criticism, your best bet is to leave the internet period.... "

Re: Nintendo UK Confirms Its Community's Top 10 Wii U Games

kingofthesofa

Good list , but no love for Tropical Freeze ? In my opinion that game is one of the finest platformers ever made ! Would also liked to have seen Zombie U in the top ten. Although a little rough graphically and glitchy in places , I thought the game had some great ides and created a genuine sense of fear and urgency. Deus X and Lego City would also have appeared in my top ten - two of the best third party games on the system IMO.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Approach is Often Peculiar, Yet That's An Enduring Strength

kingofthesofa

@Action51
Engie has been drinking Quarthons' Kool-Aid , best to ignore.
On topic , a decent article. Personally , I don't want Nintendo to be like Sony or Microsoft and I am not sure why people clamour for them to be. It's some sort of hive mind mentality. Do these people want all music to be the same ? Do they want all film and television to be the same ? As Nintendo fans do we ever suggest Sony goes third party so we can get their games on our prefered hardware ? It baffles me , to be honest. Nintendo are unique and hopefully they will continue to be for many years to come.

Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA

kingofthesofa

@Captain_Gonru
You are probably correct that Nintendo would not pay for the licensing ; also I think EA have got the majority of the rights tied up. Indeed , ISS / WE / PES all had fictional players and stadiums at some point. I remember paying to import Winning Eleven on the Gamecube and then paying through the nose for a memory card that had all the current teams with real names. I used to love Pro Evo. Pro Evo on PS1 was so much better than Fifa in my opinion. As was PES on the Wii. Like others on this site I would also be interested in a new Mario Strikers for Wii U , because Nintendo have always made great arcade style sports games. However , this would in no way compensate for the lack of a simulation style game like Pro Evo or Fifa.

Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA

kingofthesofa

@kobashi100
If they released it now , with no competition from Fifa , they would have all the potential market ( clean up ) PES on the Wii shifted a similar amount of units to the XBox 360 across all versions. I have no idea why they didn't make PES 15 for Wii U ; they made it for the XBox One with a smaller install base at the time. It was rumoured to be coming to the Wii U at one point , but it never materialised. Which is a shame in my opinion because the gamepad is tailor made for the team management side of things. Also , you could quickly tap your players on the screen in game to pass or cross to them etc.

Re: No FIFA For Nintendo Fans This Year, States EA

kingofthesofa

@Quorthon
So 4 out of 64 comments is "plenty" ? As of January 2014 , Nintendo have sold over 650 million pieces of their awful , gimmicky hardware. Sigh....
@kobashi100
If Konami released an updated version of Winning Eleven / PES for Wii U they would definitely clean up. Controlling the full team with the wii remote , swapping squad members and taking free kicks etc on the gamepad would be great.
It would also be great if Nintendo did a Sega and released their own sport games ; they have already given us the best Golf , Tennis and Bowling games ever in my humble opinion !
