Last month, Devil May Cry 5 director Hideaki Itsuno and producer Matt Walker said how they would "love" to see the popular hack and slash series on the Nintendo Switch.
Now, in a recent interview with German magazine M!, Itsuno said the latest game in the Devil May Cry series would be considered for the Switch if Capcom's April release Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen "sells well" on the platform. Below is the translation:
"If Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sells well on Switch, then we might consider porting DMC 5."
As for why Devil May Cry 5 wasn't announced for Nintendo's hybrid system in the first place, it's because development began before the team had access to Switch development kits.
"We started the development of DMC 5, while we didn't have the dev-kits [for] the Switch. Because of that we concentrated on the PS4, Xbox One and PC version."
Would you like to play Devil May Cry on Switch? Will you buy Dragon's Dogma to show your support? Tell us below.

And it's only a "might consider it" lol. I'm going to buy the game because I want it, not because I hope DMC5 comes to switch.
I suggest most people do the same. I wouldn't hold my breath for the game to come, besides the fact that it'll receive a major downgrade in the graphics/performance department I don't like these kind of statements. Plus I'm not waiting that long.
I wouldn't purchase a game I'm not interested in in hopes it's brings another when they're not even the same kind of game, so I don't understand how sales for Dragon's Dogma gauges interest for DMC5.
I get that Dragon's Dogma is also an action game, but at the end of the day it's not DMC. I don't get it.
I ain't waiting that long! LOL
I'll just wait until it's cheaper on another console, or I'll just buy it used.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: this kind of argument has no place in 2019. It could work in 2017 when the industry was still skeptical of Nintendo after the Wii U disaster, but now that the Switch has been established as the hottest console on the market, port begging to "gauge fan interest" is simply stupid.
People love the Switch, and people love buying games of all kinds on it. I understand that DMC's been in development for a while, but there's no reason why they shouldn't be working on a port of some kind at this point. At the very least let us have the HD collection.
Yo, I don't buy a game for the chance of eventually getting the one I really wanted.
That being said, I'll get Dragons Dogma because it looks like a cool RPG lol.
Oh... it's the Bandai Namco "please buy this game you don't want, then we 'might' give you the game you actually want evil grin" trick again >.>
Capcom is really dumb if they think this'll fly in 2019...
not into devil may cry, but MAN if only Bandai Namco was more like Capcom with Tekken 7 where they don't stupidly say "we'll port unless fans want it".
Sounds like crappy marketing to me.
This type of statement makes me less likely to buy the game, if anything.
This game will not be released on the Switch until Capcom gets their engine to run on the platform first and as it's been two years of the Switch's life and Capcom is still releasing ancient games I'm certain it will never happen, not anytime soon.
Also, enough of this bs that Nintendo players have to buy enough to get another game.
F* off really, I already did that favour with SF II when it was released in the beginning and costed an arm and a leg. Not happening again Capcom.
Yes, clearly people interested in a port of an unrelated game will automatically be interested in a new, different game. They might as well use the sales of Shovel Knight to decide whether to make a port or not.
@NinjaSyao at least capcom don't ask fans IF they want whatever game on the SWITCH like Namco. thats downgrading the SWITCH.
@LUIGITORNADO when they talk BS like that I love to wait and get a second hand game so my money doesn't go to the developers.
I still play the game but they don't have my money
Holding games for ransom. Bad form Capcom.
@tourjeff then wouldn't that mean they'd lose profit to make another game you'd want to play in the future?
Suda51 said the same thing about No More Heroes 3 being contingent on sales of Travis Strikes Back. Honestly, this game looks waaay too pretty to be on Switch and I imagine that if it gets on there, it’ll be severely pared down. I wouldn’t get my hopes up on it.
@Toastess if they didn't release the game on the platform I want to play then 'no' .
It would be the same as if I've never purchased because I only play in one platform and the game is not available.
Let's take DMC 5 for instance, my currently preferred platform to play is the Switch, if a game is not available there then I wait for prices to go down a bit and get it new on the PS4, but when companies like Capcom or EA come with this kind of BS, then, I get their games as second hand.
Haha! Wow that's a good one. "Maybe we'll give you this game if you buy this completely unrelated port."
Why do companies keep thinking this will work?
Ugh! I was looking forward to playing Dragon's Dogma on Switch, but the sheer stupidity of this pronouncement is even making me reconsider buying that game. So, all that totally undeserved money they got from Switch users with their mediocre repackaging of Street Fighter II wasn't enough for them to consider Switch a worthy platform for their high budget games?
Seriously, f**k you Capcom!
@Whalehome That's completely different in my opinion, because No More Heroes 3 doesn't exist in the first place, so it's a much more risky proposition than just porting an existing game to a different platform. Also, Travis Strikes Back and No More Heroes 3 would be part of the same series, while Dragon's Dogma has at best a very tenuous relationship to the DMC series.
Why not use the profits from the ridiculously overpriced Resident Evil Ports to release DMC5 ?
Those statements seem kinda familiar...
I dunno... maybe the FFXV x Hajime Tabata thing? lol
I 99% doubt this would ever happen even if Dragon's Dogma sells. 1% hoping I'm wrong.
I do still think this is essentially an indirect request to port beg for the game which is nuts tbh.
So I guess Ultra Super Hyper Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyper X HD Version and Mega Man 11 didn’t sell on the Switch.
Playing Bayonetta on the Switch, these are games I don't really like playing in handheld mode so I'll just get this game on the PS4.
@Kochambra valid criticisms to my point. It’s not entirely the same situation, but it’s always disappointing when a developer is asking you to buy this product in hopes that you will get a chance to buy the other product.
If you give me 30 bucks im going to consider the possibility to make you able to give me another 60 bucks. 😑
Well, Ive bought both. Id love to see 5 crammed somehow into the Switch. Damn its gorgeous and fast. Definitely want the HD Collection and 4 on there too tho. Be nice to have them all on the go.
No No No and FFFFF No! Not doing this stupid games being held hostage and MIGHT be considered if support for an unrelated game is high. I'll watch a play through on youtube if I'm that desperate.
Just give it to me for free , maybe I'll reserve some time to play it some day.
I don't like how companies treat us. Like wallets. Ok, these are big companies that rely on money and they don't do charities BUT the users are not garbage. Buy this IF you want to play our next game that MAYBE will come to Switch. If am not mistaken this is the second time Capcom does it again with SF2. I don't like this kind of treatment Capcom !
Ah I love a good game ransom. Buy the game you don't want to hopefully get the one you do want. Genius!
I'm sick and tired of this attitude from publishers.
The Nintendo Switch is not an experimental machine, it's a console which sold more units in its first 2 years than Xbox One or Playstation 4 did.
The average age of a console player is nearer to 40 than to 30 now.
So stop being condescending and make your game on the machine if you want or don't make it if you don't want.
I doubt you could pull the same attitude about making a PS4 game so don't do it here.
Thank you.
"Show your support" - Sorry for saying this, but are you dumb? Do you support bullcrap like this? 🙄 Do gamers on XB or PS get held hostaged, basically saying "if you don't buy x game und don't get y game."? No, they f***** don't!
It would make some sense, if the games shared more than just the action genre. This would be like Nintendo holding a Starfox game hostage, and seeing if we bought Splatoon. I mean, they're both technically shooters, but what do they have to do with each other? It's absurd.
As a note, I was just using both Starfox and Splatoon as examples. I buy both regardless of what's being held hostage.
“We know you want to have this orange, but first you’ll have to buy this apple.”
But the games aren't similar at all, so that's kind of a weird message to send.
What does devil may cry have to do with dragon's dogma? If they want to test, just bring devil may cry 4 to switch...
To be honest even if they did port it, it's probably going head to head with bayonetta 3.......
I will buy Dragon's Dogma anyway, as I'm curious to play it. If it has the side-effect of them porting DMC5, then who am I to complain? But I wouldn't buy it just to get DMC5. If I would love to play that game so badly, I can always try it on PS4 or Xbox One.
@tourjeff (i should help capcom somehow...maybe i should buy 3 copies dragon dogma...even though i don't like the devil may cry series).
This is a bit like saying “buy crash team racing and we’ll release the last of us”. Two totally different games...
That makes sense. I'm going to base my decision on which car to buy on how well my neighbor rides a bicycle. Because reasons!
How many times is this going to happen with switch? Sells 30+ million in 2 years. Still has to prove it has an audience. What is wrong with Capcom
Or how about I wait and buy both games cheaper and second hand so you get nothing because you're being money grabbing randsom skanks.
Are they alienating a user base on purpose do you think?
The game would sell on the Switch like crazy. Don’t know the logic here. Played it last night on PS4. Loving it so far. Getting those SS rankings is fun as ever.
Such things are immoral coercion, so I'm gonna respond with the same: I'm going to consider buying Dragon's Dogma if you release DMC on Switch!
Utterly ridiculous point of view. The Switch has beeen the dominant selling platform for more periods than not in the last year, how is this still a thing to be considered and considered on a six year old RPG that wasn't that popular on it's original release platforms.
"If" DD sells enough. Let's be honest, DD will sell like hotcakes.
But other than that, same despicable business practice as usual I take it. What is this, 2017? The Switch is the top console now. You don't port beg on the top dog.
Maybe I'd buy it if they promised Viewtiful Joe HD Collection instead. At least I know that could possibly run on Switch.
Capcom holds the keys to a lot of my childhood faves and Dogma has to be in my top 5 games.
But they can go smurf themselves with this constant hostage taking, I think this has to be their worst one yet as other than the director there is not much overlap between dogma and DMC.
So buy this port of an old game and we might give you a new game.
Would this mean that they'll port RE2 as well? Supposedly the reason that wouldn't get ported was because of the engine not running on the Switch, so if they adapt it for DMC5 then any of the games using it should be feasible.
DMC5 being ported to switch is never gonna happen. Strange comment anyway as I thought the RE engine was not ported to switch yet. I can see DMC HD collection being released on switch though
Meh. Just give me Dragon’s Dogma
@Blizzia you underestimate Capcom. Luckily they are giving the Switch some decent games. So I can’t be that angry at them.
No, I don't want to buy a game I already played just to get the hopes of another game. As a lot of people stated, this is beyond stupid.
I already found it stupid with Travis Strikes Back and that was a new game.
PS4, XboxOne and PC did not face those requirements, so the Switch should not either.
Well, at least we get ASTRAL CHAIN AND BAYONETTA 3, so it's not like Switch players will be missing out in the genre.
I am so sick of the Switch and Nintendo gamers being an afterthought... what if people are interested in DMC but not Dragon's Dogma?
For the record, this usual "if you do Y, then we do X" approach (where Y appropriately enough indicates the secondary thing we're not interested in, as @Heavyarms55 said) has always been exploitative at best.
Think about something outside the gaming medium: Teen Titans GO To The Movies.
The Titans' VAs (which, for those "not in the know", all reprise their roles from the far superior original TT series) have gone on record as saying over on Twitter that Cartoon Network would give the original show some closure with a sixth season. To further drive the point home, the mid-credits scene (it's a superhero movie, it's a given) treated fans with this:
So, many tickets were sold, especially with word-of-mouth after the opening weekend. You'd figure out we're getting that sixth season. Turns out, we're not.
Back on topic, I wouldn't trust this at face value if there's the very much possible risk of Capcom getting cold feet with DMC5 "deemed unfeasible on Switch". If you buy Dragon's Dogma, make sure you buy it because it's Dragon's Dogma. If you're paying for a Switch port of DMC5, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
I was going to buy this today. This statement makes me think I should wait for a possible Switch version instead.
Great marketing Capcom.
What a load of crap, sorry but "If you want this you have to buy this" attitude is awful.
If it was a similar style of game it might make sense, but its nothing like it
Capcom you dicks
So basically, it's not coming to Switch because nobody's ever heard of Dragon's Dogma. Okay then.
It looks like this is taken out of context and all he's really saying is that if games already planned for the system are successful then they'll look to bring others to it which makes perfect business sense. Many on here seem to forget that regardless of how well the Switch is selling, 3rd party software still isn't selling in big numbers. Even if DMC 5 were to come it'd likely be a year or two anyway with drastically reduced visual quality and a halved framerate.
I'd love to see the series on Switch and hopefully we'll get at at the original trilogy, me personally I'd much rather play this game on my Xbox One X anyway
@sanderev Nah, Crapcom has always been scummy.
Good old Capcom, the Japanese EA.
I'm already getting DMC5 on PS4 and I wouldn't see myself double dipping anyway. Dragon's Dogma looks cool and I probably will pick it up for Switch when I have time for it. Not day 1 though. I'd be down for the DMC HD Collection on Switch, I've been holding off on buying that because I figured that's an easy port. It's just the PS3/360 games in a new package. Just weird marketing from Capcom here. Didn't the 500K sales of Street Fighter 2 for $40 in 2017 convince them that the Switch is a viable platform already?
IDIOTS! Bring the DMC collection over to the Switch, and use THAT to check the interest for DMCV here. But Dragon's Dogma...?? What's the point?? They just want to sell the game using whatever means.
I thought of giving that game a chance, but now I know I'll buy it, if ever, by the time it gets a big discount... Crapcom doesn't deserve Nintendo fans money.
for an industry that's probably worth billions of dollars, people who run it sure are a dumb. It speaks even more of the consumers of said industry.
Two completely different types of game, this is nothing more than a ransom.
This is what happens when someone is obsessively in love with the money instead of thinking in the humans that give them the money.
All the triggered fanheads here ignore that the guy (and any other publisher saying this) is just being Captain Obvious - regardless of franchise, it's every additional sale that adds that many more odds to the justification of more releases. Dragon's Dogma itself is happening in part because completely unrelated franchises like RE and Mega Man have been selling; it was never "held for ransom" in interviews because pretty much nobody asked about it back then. But by all means, keep playing victims.
As for me, I have it the other way with Capcom - I'll buy DMC 5 on Switch if I can play the previous four portably. And Dragon's Dogma is on my radar regardless, but the RPG portion of my Switch backlog already includes some other bulky titles including Skyrim. No, I won't claim to buy DD only after finishing Skyrim (the jury is still out on whether there's such a thing as "finishing Skyrim"), but it likely won't be an immediate purchase. At least one of my two April paydays is as good as booked by FF12 instead.
Hmmmm, this is the second time I’ve heard a similar statement by Capcom this month. Didn’t they say the same about RE3 Remake. But only if RE2 sells well. I appreciate the honesty. But if they’re going to follow the road of holding there games hostage until we purchase other titles. That’s something I’m on the fence about.
@AlexSora89 Why did you tag me?! I am crying! Ignorance is bliss, I didn't know we'd been teased and spat on with regards to Teen Titans like that! I HATE Teen Titans Go but loved the original! CN...
NL would be be justified if in deleting this comment if I said what I want to say about CN right now...
This guys isn’t “holding anything ransom”. I don’t think he gives two splits whether people buy Dragon’s Dogma or not. It’s not his game. But it seems he is going to use the sales of that particular new franchise to us that’s never been on Nintendo, to determine whether people would buy his new franchise to us that’s never been on Nintendo. Which is fair play. He wants to know if it’s worth his time and that’s the metric that would make him feel comfortable. Nobody’s going to buy a game just to see another one possibly come, so he’s not threatening. He’s just speaking truth. If that game doesn’t do well, that means Nintendo fans probably aren’t into those serious mature types of games Capcom makes that fans aren’t familiar with (like RE). Which is bad news for him if he wants to bring DMC.
I mean, I was gonna buy Dragons Dogma anyways, just because it’s a firecracker game.
Good think Nintendo didn't say "we might release a new console if the Wii U oversells the Wii".
Hey Capcom, release DMC5 on Switch, and I may consider Dragon’s Dogma
Well, guess what? I'm not buying Dragons Dogma, a game from more than 5 years ago. But I'd totally buy Devil May Cry 5. I don't understand this thinking. The games have nothing to do with one another.
I don't think DMC 5 would even run on the Switch
This is why Crapcom is ridiculous. Release an old game and have and give an ultimatum to expect it to sell as well as a new one and then dangle a new one like a treat in front of the consumer. The only reason I will buy Dragon's Dogma is because I have never played it and only if it is a good port. Not everyone is in that same boat.
They are kinda blackmailing us. Dragons Dogma is a must buy. Devil may cry not so much. With that said
@garthvader you've missed a great RPG game that's for sure. All the way up to level 200. You can choose classes so you can level up the way you want... like more HP you have to choose warrior and later switch to magic etc etc etc. This game will be one of the very best RPGs on the Switch! Get it! lol
@Heavyarms55
It's okay, we all hate current CN.
Oh look; holding a game for ransom to boost an unrelated one. I guess with other third parties acting like scum and releasing flops, Capcom didn't want to look like a nerd.
Better crowbar an unlockable Link costume into Dragon's Dogma fast then...
@Orangezap89 this is the thing. I just don't see it a real possibility no matter what DD sells. DMC 5 on base Xbox one should show everyone a switch port is gonna be a huge task and probably not worth it
How is making a DMC5 port at all contingent on Dragon's Dogma? Makes absolutely no sense at all.
This is what you call "blackmailing"
If you don't buy game x...you won't get game y!
Use your brain guys, and only buy a game if you think its worth it!
Dragon's dogma is already on my must buy game this april!
"If Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sells well on Switch, then we might consider porting DMC 5." Sounds like they are just trying to get more people to buy DD:DA while also having an excuse when they inevitably end up not putting forth the effort to make a Switch port
"Show your support".
Really? Show a certain finger of yours is what i would say.....
Hint: Star-Lord
"If Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen sells well on Switch, then we might consider porting DMC 5."
Sorry, I'm not buying a 7 year old game on a might. You've just lost a sale with that statement alone. Not buying those old a** Resident Evil ports either. I'm through with Capcom. Bye Felicia
That is disgusting how they blackmailed us like this.
Getting really sick of this crap now. The Switch has proven quite often that third party titles sell. Sick of being given ultimatum for certain titles.
See, I was pondering getting Dragon's Dogma anyway because I like it. But I don't like this approach. I'll stick to my original plan and just get DMC5 for PS4. Make the game for Switch or don't, but I won't be a part of the port-begging game.
With this attitude, along with the recent recent details of the resident evil games,it's clear they still view the Switch and Switch only gamers as an afterthought and have no intention of releasing NEW games on the platform. I dount a new MH is coming to Switch either. Capcom are happy drip feeding old games onto the Switch and that's it
Yeah........no
Seriously Capcom, after the RE pricing debacle and continuously not releasing any physical games in Europe, you're really not enamouring yourself to Switch owners Capcom.
I've got zero interest in Dragon's Dogma, but then, even the Capcom games i do want, they are making it as hard as possible to make me want to buy them, get a grip Capcom !!
That is such a stupid strategy... "Yeah we will port the game you want to play only if this game you never cared about sells well..." 🙄They need to stop doing this. It's ridiculous. Imagine Nintendo comes out and tells people "yeah, we will make a new F Zero and a new Mother for Switch... IF Diddy Kong Math Deluxe sells well"
If DMC 5 does come to switch watch it be like 80 bucks cause of "switch tax"
Ah the ol' "play this and we'll give you that" barter. I plan to play this game anyway, but don't con me-- Bring DMC if you "want to", but it won't be from me pandering to you.
Nope. Not a chance. Sorry, but I’m not biting at that carrot. It’s ridiculous. They don’t pull this crap on Sony or Microsoft fans. I was considering picking up Dragon’s Dogma, but......nope, not now. **** em!
Capcom can go jerk off in the corner somewhere, I’m guessing they’re gonna say this every time now 😂
I'd only get for PS4, kind of console/game attachment thing.
It'll be a frame rate nightmare on Switch.
Already downloading it on PC for the weekends.
just release it on Switch or don't. Nobody had to prove anything to get it on PC. Even letting AMD give it away with cards.
https://www.amd.com/en/gaming/raise-the-game
@nhSnork This is completely BS. Otherwise DMC5 would not have happened at all, if it would require those strong sales of other titles or would be considered for all other platforms.
This is just dangling a carrot to drive sales of an old game and nothing more and it seems Itsuno has a skin in his game, because he was - you guesst it right - director of Dragon's Dogma and Devil May Cry.
If Capcom thinks DMC5 is worth porting, and will recoup the porting (not production) cost, they should take the risk, given the current glowing reviews for the game so far, I think this is an easy bet.
But playing this stupid game of buy game Y to get game X is just marketing or making premature excuses and holding a "probably" at ransom.
All the things rather point to Capcom being lazy and just want a quick cash in, though they gotta realize that those who don't have multiple consoles or PC to run their games (I am happily admit that I am one of them), I will look to other franchsies for my fix and currently that will happen again with ASTRAL CHAIN and BAYONETTA 3 (though I don't have an inkling about them being on par, but given Platinum Games track record, I feel confident).
@Toadie Yeah I feel the same way. It seems Capcom is like Blizzard and Diablo Eternal, but instead of Don't you guys have any phones ask if we don't like those classic games...
@Agramonte This, all the other platforms did not need to proof anything, other than being available. So yeah, either bringt it to Switch or don't, but they gotta stop with the silly "Well, we did not sell Y, so you won't get X."
Ahhh, the old squenix tactic. I mean, at least they offered a game of the same series... Even just genre would be fine. I'm not falling for it. Just look at Bayonetta's sales figures, you tools.
If DMC 5 comes to Switch - great. If not - I really don't care. I wasn't really planning on getting DMC 5 anyway, even though I do like the series. It's just not for me.
Dragons Dogma, on the other hand, is TOTALLY for me. And I'll be getting that the instant it becomes available. Loved that game so much I bought it back on Ps3 and spent hours on it. I'll happily double dip again because I know it'll be great to have!
I was 100% going to buy Dragons Dogma because it looks like a game I would enjoy, but these kinds of comments make me not want to buy it just to spite them.
Didn’t even know Dragon’s Dogma was coming to switch. It’s not even listed on game.co.uk. Is it digital download only?
I would definitely buy it as I love this fantasy rpg game style, all I hope is that it doesn’t get the ‘Switch tax’ as I see the game on the other consoles is retailing at around £20. If this comes out with an asking price of £50 then i’ll pass.
I already own several versions of Dragon's Dogma, so ... yeah whatever ^^ Also, enjoyment of one game is hardly indicative of enjoyment for the other game. I'm more upset about No More Heroes in that regard though. Would be a shame if Travis Strikes Again were to have killed NMH, but even though, I have ezro interest in Strikes Again and with dozens of other, way more compelling games to play, I would never get around to playing it anyways - hence no buy whatsoever.
Also after persona 5 mumbo jumbo whether it's coming to switch or not i grow tired of all these lame excuses! Brought an expensive console handheld and we now beg for porting games that aren't for free, that we're going to still pay for( with our hard earned money)! What nonsense is that!
I was already getting DD but this does make me pause. Like they know very well if they plan to bring it over or if it could even be ported. This ultimatum crap is just stupid.
Im buyingDragons Dogma day 1. DMC, never. If Capcom want high sales, they should put a reasonable price on it. Like 19.99
This nonsense again? No thanks.
That makes no sense.
DMC 5 on switch is a preorder for me. Dragon Dogma is not even under consideration.
@BanjoPickles you was never gonna buy DD on switch in the first place.
Nice bit of blackmail there - "we'll only release X if you buy Y". No thanks.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa the only BS here is the obstinacy of fan logic about transparent points. He clearly said that the game was made with a certain set of platforms in mind; anything beyond that is oiled and fueled by commercial factors. And no one is saying general publisher output sales are the cornerstone of probability here; it's just about the only sane thing the audience can do on their part to fan the fire of said probability. Relatively more effective than vocal campaigns (those can be taken note of, but measuring a market by fanship-affected social accounts and comments is like getting news from tabloids) and infinitely more effective than vocal rants.
You want more games, you contribute to the picture of interested audiences on the platform (as opposed to some third parties' still unforgotten Wii paradox when a platform has a 100 million userbase yet leaves you wondering what percentage of this userbase may have bought a Wii Fit party machine while still confusing many prominent franchise names for something edible). Yes, all it does is add bullet points to the reasoning to present for porting initiatives like this - capcoms tend to owe no explanations to gamers but quite a few to investors. Yet again, we're told to "buy x if you want y" not because buying x guarantees a port of y, but because it's the most effective catalyst WE can realistically offer. Unlike twitter begging, petitions or froth-mouthed fits of entitlement, sales have monetary value, so they're that much more tangible and convincing by default.
On one hand, I really hate supporting stuff like this. On the other hand, I was really looking forwards to getting Dragon's Dogma... blagh maybe I shouldn't now.
Zack and Wiki 2 (sequel) when Capcom ??
One has no relation to the other. It would be one thing to pull this “buy our old game to get a new one tactic” if they were related but they aren’t even in the same genre.
On the other hand, I wonder how this would go if it was Nintendo saying "You might get a new F-zero if enough people buy the Nintendo Labo Vehicle kit".
I think F-zero fans are desperate enough. But Nintendo is a decent company.
Capcom have been doing this since Street Fighter 2 came out on Switch. "Buy this, and we'll consider porting the game you really like." It's so off-putting. Really makes me reconsider how much I want DMC.
I'm buying Dragon's Dogma no matter what. Don't care about Devil May Cry 5 though, if anything it could keep on crying harder and maybe just maybe it'll be more important for me to care about it.
@nhSnork No, it's still BS.
1] Street Figher and Mega Man performed well and the port of Onimusha was off to a strong start, what else does Capcom want?
2] Given a lot of reports from Indies, the Switch sales were always outperforming other sales, I have no hard data to back that up, but I would wager it is the same for Capcom, so what proof does it want additionally
3] It seems that other companies are already riding the Switch and return, even Square Enix deemed a port to Switch of Dragon Quest IX feasible and they did not feel that confident to bring over the 3DS version.
4] I can understand and follow that the development was done with PS4, XboxOne and PC in mind, those games don't get made overnight. However there was some expectations of sales data, and I'd wager Capcom already has an inkling.
5] I will however admit, that Capcom's RE7 stream experiment failed, as far as my knowledge goes, though this was within a limited market and with technology in it's infancy.
Also, I don't feel entitled to their port, again, if they don't bring DMCV to the Switch, I happily buy alternatives, but I also don't buy a game from a genre I am not interested in or a game per se I am not interested in, just to get to the one game I like. They will get my support for stuff I care. I have limited amount of money and time and if they want my cash, they better bring the goods. The company is also not entitled to my money, or entitled to me buying a game to get another game.
I don't think people that would love to see a JRPG would not feel okay if they have to buy a shooter.
I have bought my fair share of games from other companies another than Nintendo, I even did the tally, currently its 50% first party to 50% 3rd party, so I think I am doing my part in sending the message, but I do not want to nor buy a game and if that is putting Capcom off, well, than they don't get my money alltogether.
If you have unlimited cash and time to spend to buy games you are not interested in, just to get to the gems, knock yourself out, but don't assume everybody is in this luxurious situation.
Given the comments a lot of people seem to be interested in DD, so this is a good sign, but this business practice of saying you gotta buy grapefruit in order to be allowed to buy apples, that is harsh.
Digital foundry just got done skewering this game on Xbox one, stating PS4, PS4 pro, and Xbox one x were the way to go.
If the current lowest common denominator got bashed for being a lackluster experience, how does he think this is gonna run on switch?
When I saw the picture, all that came to mind was "The Zekenator".
Hot dog, Dragons Dogma is coming to the Switch?!? Yeaaaah buddy!
I don't like Dragon's Dogma, I like Devil May Cry 5, but I don't like Dragon's Dogma, I am not a fan of Dragon's Dogma games, thus I will not invest in it, just to get my beloved Dante on Nintendo! Besides I already support Capcom with plenty of Mega Man games.
I tell you what, if they could make this work on Nintendo Switch with very few sacrifices, I would eat this up! Devil May Cry on Xbox 360 is one of my favorite games, hands down. Bring on the demon killing!
@CaPPa Now that you bring up RE2. That is one situation where it makes sense. If they said "If our current RE games do well on the Switch. We might bring over RE2" it would make a little more sense. Granted, these are still ports of old games people may not want to buy for the second+ time. But at least they're related. Hardcore fans of Resident Evil would probably buy them anyways as well.
But two unrelated ips, with entirely different kinds of gameplay focus? Oof... Dragon's Dogma is more like Skyrim or BOTW than it is DMC, and DMC is more like Bayonetta. If they looked at anything, Platinum's typical action game is a better indicator.
@Regpuppy Or, you know, Onimusha.
@kobashi100
As a fan of the game, I was planning on buying it. You don’t know my buying habits, friend.
I remember when I was going to purchase Dragon's Dogma on Steam and found a drm free version on GoG, I was ecstatic about that and when I eventually get a switch a few months soon I'll happily purchase this again.
I’ll show my support by purchasing DMC 5 on Switch if they make it for Switch. I’m not going to buy some other game to get DMC on Switch. None of this gated buy this to get the game you really want nonsense...
Went to the Greengrocer for oranges. He said 'buy these apples and I might have oranges next time'. I told him to f*** off. Same for Capcom.
"Support dogma to have DMC V on switch."
how about i just buy this game and buy DMC V on a different platform. you can keep that " plz buy this to get that" though.
Listen guys, Resident Evil 2 Remake may come to Switch if Ace Attorney sells well. What on the system HAS NOT sold well, that's been old and released elsewhere already by Capcom? I feel like, they say this as a joke at this point. At least when Namco Bandai was like "if DBX2 sells well we'll port DBFZ" that's somewhat in the same arena. I'd rather not have a watered down version of this on Switch anyway, so keep it.
@KayFiOS
While I am not a fan of silly marketing blackmail gimmicks like this... I would pay large amounts of money and/or buy other games for a Viewtiful Joe HD collection remaster on Switch lol... I miss that game and would love to see it updated!
@MaSSiVeRiCaN Yes, this is basically a scam developers started to do when they realized Nintendo fans were loyal enough to agree to it. They should release DMC 5 on Switch and then I'll buy it, I'm not buying every game the dev every released in hopes that DMC 5 will come.
@YessMasster Nailed it!
Devil may cry 5 is getting great reviews. It will be a framerate disaster on switch.
I would buy a switch outright if this came to switch. Heck, i would be happy with a collection pack of devil may cry 1-4. I play the first three extensively on ps2. The first one i was even beginning to replay on hard which was massively hard because you needed a whole new strategy.
So if this came to switch I would be sold. Even my love of my 3ds while i do love ya pal, you can't take that part that belong to devil may cry.
However, this won't happen because there just offering a bone hoping we will take the bait. This doggie however won't bite.
@NinjaSyao Well, they kept their word with FighterZ, though ...
Relase DMC collection and I will consider buy. it.
But DMC 5 sucks. Is the worst game of the serie.
@TromboneGamer Sounds like he’s just promoting their new game.
I also bought Mario Odyssey, would you beggars please please port Galaxy to switch too??
The story of DmC: Devil May Cry is better than this new one.
@Wavey84
Yeah, I don't really care if the visuals take a hit but framerate is a major thing and in handheld mode, it's not as easy or comfortable playing high paced, intense action games like these. I'll most definitely be playing Bayonetta 3 primarily in docked mode.
@Wavey84
I have rubber grips on my JoyCons which make all the difference (much prefer that over a grip that goes over the entire console since it's much smaller, and doesn't have to be removed).
I'm a music person but I'm not a "sound" person if that makes sense, I think it has to also to do with how easily I can get immersed into a game where I don't need a great sound system or whatever, I mean I was fully immersed in games like Zero Escape, Danganronpa and Ace Attorney and I played those on the 3DS and Vita (without headphones).
I personally am amazed at the lengths people will go through just go get immersed into the games they're playing, I must also add that I'm always doing things that would easily break immersion like having a video on my computer playing (I'm super into politics so it's usually a political news video and if not, Game Grumps LOL) so it would be silly for me to invest in an elaborate sound setup when I'm constantly doing things that split my attention.
I do prefer playing games on a TV but yeah, the handheld option is incredibly convenient, especially for lengthy single player games (currently playing Tales of Vesperia).
I am convinced the RE Engine which Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 2 uses is not compatible with the Switch, especially after Capcom's experiment with Resident Evil 7: Cloud Version. I doubt we will see DMC5 on the Switch anytime soon.
Developers must stop treating the switch like that!!
We will support you if you will give us good games, but we won’t buy a game just to get another game later on.... (I mean, some will, but most won’t)
Crapcom still dangling carrots?
Capcom and their "tests" will be forever.
how about "if it gets released, maybe i'll buy it"?
That seems pretty predatory. Capcom already knows their games will sell on switch. DMC has a much larger following than Dragons Dogma. Seems like a way to get a game to sell they aren’t very confident in
@MaSSiVeRiCaN switch isn’t capable of handling the REngine well, which is what DMC 5 runs on. That’s why they had to do a cloud version of RE7 and it’s why we won’t see RE2
@MortalKombat2007 BINGO
@Meehanuk because their new games are running on REngine, which clearly isn’t compatible with switch
If anyone bought DMC5 I’m switch they deserve everything that will be wrong with it. I’m almost 100 percent positive it wouldn’t be able to happen without a cloud based version like RE7
@tourjeff great way to make sure a console loses support. You’re hurting Nintendo when you do that too
@nhSnork
Dragon's Dogma is a much better game than Final Fantasy 12. I have both and one got a ton more play than the other.
Oh, Capcom, you already fooled us once with your "buy our old port so you can get new games" lie. Not falling for it again.
@AlphaElite
Everytime they repackage Dragon's Dogma they promise to make a part 2 if the sales are great. Still hasn't happened.
@jly1987 At what point do you stop buying old overpriced ports when you realize that the publisher has no intention of releasing anything else other than more overpriced old ports?
Capcom realized two years ago they could sell old games for full price - sometimes more - on Switch and they'll keep selling as long as they dangle the false hope of new AAA games.
I think @tourjeff is right. Capcom - and other publishers like them - can shove off if that's how they're going to treat Nintendo fans. They don't treat Playstation and Xbox fans this way - why should we take it?
And also, "hurting Nintendo" is not my concern as a consumer. They are a multi-billion dollar corporation. They will be fine.
What are they talking about. I preorder Amazon Japan the Collectors
Dragon Dogma Collectors Edition already. To say until it sells better what a joke..........Get your head out of your bunghole Capcom.!!!!
@AlphaElite the reason Nintendo gets treated this way, isn’t because of the fans. You say they don’t treat Xbox and PlayStation fans that way. It’s because their games can run on the hardware. Switch isn’t getting hames and It’s because the console is not capable of properly running the games. Why do you think Mega Man 11 is day one, but other capcom titles aren’t. It’s 100 percent due to the limitations of the system and the extensive work it would require to probably get even a VERY bad version of the game running. I’d rather have them NOT release it, than try to get out a version of the game that just doesn’t work right. If it’s that upsetting to you that 3rd party publishers treat Nintendo consoles the way they do, you should play on a console or a PC where what you get isn’t limited by the lack of power
@AlternateButtons he says might port it because they have to look into it. Unfortunately, our console is not capable of running things as intended due to the limitations of the hardware. NOTHING that uses REngine has come to switch except for a cloud based version of RE7. He says MIGHT because if if they WANT to, there’s a chance it’s not even possible
People need to get over it. The switch can’t run the game or they’d put it on switch. I’m not complaining for the same reason I don’t complain about 4K and 60fps on my PS4. If I wanted that I’d play on a PC. If I wanted to play high end games coming out at the tail end of the current generation, I wouldn’t have bought a switch. Think about what you’re playing on before you complain about stuff
It annoys me when game companies hold games for ransom, due to sales of another game. In this case, one unrelated.
@NinjaSyao They got away with it for Mega Man 11. So I guess they figure they can get away with it again. Its such a crappy thing to do.
@Baart Not that decent. They pulled this bs with the remake of Samus Returns.
@jly1987
You don't get the point. The point is, it is a scummy tactic for ANY game company to do. Your hung up on it being a DMC5 game, instead of the tactic itself.
Well lemme tell you about the games that can run nicely on Nintendo consoles that were held for ransom of some sort
Metroid fans didn't appreciate being told 2D Metroids would be ditched if Samus Returns didn't sell well.
They didn't like Capcom dangling the threat of no more Mega Man being made if 11 didn't sell well.
It ruffled the feathers of No More Hero fans being told that about a possible NMH3 game not being made if Travis Strikes Again didn't sell well.
@Tempestryke Nintendo fans wouldn’t have to deal with it if they bought more than Mario, Pokémon and spinoffs. Indie games being the exception seeing a tiny team makes them for next to nothing. This is the reason why the consoles lack 3rd party support besides the porting issues. Everyone talks about how much they loved Bayonetta 2. Nobody bought it. They loved wonderful 101. Nobody bought it. Sega made mad world, nobody bought it. Okami undersold. Red steel 2. I can go on and on. The Wii has over 100 million units sold and tons of great games were struggling to break a couple million. These consoles historically have proven one thing, unless you belong to a certain franchise your game could be perfect and everyone loves it, yet some how it doesn’t sell. Would I love more support? Absolutely. However, I don’t expect it at all because time and time again the gamers on Nintendo consoles have proven that no matter how much they say they love or want something, they’ve proven otherwise with their wallets
@Tempestryke you seem to forget that making games is a risk. Why is Nintendo going to make 2d Metroid if nobody buys it. Why is Suda going to make NMH3 when nobody bought the first two, despite claiming how great they are. If Nintendo wasn’t funding Bayonetta 3 I guarantee you Kamiya and his team wouldn’t be making it right now. Be glad Nintendo is funding it because after they funded the 2nd one and nobody bought it they would have been right to not bother with the 3rd
The Switch isn't selling Wii U levels of units, so why do devs still treat it like it doesn't have an audience?
@Lemmy_the_Koopa again, you insist on bashing your head against an imaginary wall. There's nothing unsound in refusing to follow the suggestion like you thankfully do here, but raising cain over it as some kind of "business practice" and "ransom marketing" reeks of fan logic in itself. Again, it's just a point made about something gamers can and, if they so wish, might as well do instead of constantly pestering the industry with ephemeral "demand" which is increasingly hard to measure in the age of social media where people come to say and write whatever. And given the multitude of factors influencing the actual decision, there's naturally no guarantee, just a "might consider". Heck, they "might consider" it even if nobody buys Dragon's Dogma at all - how far such considerations go is an open question in all scenarios. Which makes it rather futile to attempt full estimations about onimushas and megamen on our corporately uninformed part. Nintendo knows Switch's success and potential better than a dozen capcoms and yet there are still cases like Xenoblade X which have the developer's interest but remain reportedly held back by the question of financing.
And without something tangible to offer in return, there's no business practice to speak of. There's just a message that everyone so eager to do something for more games from a publisher might as well just buy other games from that publisher - it's never "super effective" but still comparatively more influential on the audience side than an echo chamber of "vocal demand", especially after the other party has long got the memo about the latter anyway, thank you very much.
You absolutely don't have to go and buy Dragon's Dogma for a lotterylicious chance at a DMC 5 port; the point is, you shouldn't act like Capcom is forcing you to do it either.
Go to hell, Capcom.
@Yogsoggoth they look and feel rather different anyway, and a Final Fantasy is a Final Fantasy. And I've been waiting for years to have a proper opportunity to play it - the only single player flagship besides XV that I've got left in my 12-year Final Fantasy binge, too.
@rushiosan it's not very pragmatic to direct publishers to a place where the whole multitude of fans warrants being directed to by default. Gonna be too crowded.
I don't want it.
@AxeltheBuizel because when the Wii had over 100 million copies people still didn’t buy 3rd party hands. Also the switch probably isn’t capable of running the engine DMC is on. That would explain why resident evil 7 was cloud only, RE2 isn’t coming and DMC isn’t
@Dazzle exactly. I don’t understand why this community has realized yet they are always going to get the short end of the stick due to the limitations of the console when it comes to ports. As far as new, original switch games are concerned, all I have to say is these companies still remember the Wii selling 100 million but their games barely breaking a million copies sold
Anyone know if Dragon Dogma is being released in UK cant find it anywhere to pre order
How about you consider giving Dragons Dogma 2 the green light instead.
@Meehanuk that’s not what they said. They said they’d SEE. I promise you REengine doesn’t run on switch right now. If it didn’t RE7 Woukdnt be a cloud version
If anyone from Capcom is reading this:
THE SWITCH ISN'T AS WEAK AS YOU THINK IT IS!!!!!
