As is now the regular routine, European Nintendo Download fans can kick off the week with an early look at what's to come in Thursday's update. The upcoming week does only feature one new game, rounding off a quiet January for the eShop platforms, but does include a series of tempting discounts on retail and download-only games. Without further ado, let's get to it.
Wii U eShop Retail Download
Wii Fit U (Nintendo, €34.99 / £29.99) — Available from 1st February. The Wii Fit U trial offer, in which you get to keep the download for free when synchronised with a Wii Fit Meter, expires on 31st January. From that point onwards it'll shift to a standard price on the eShop, so act fast if you want to take advantage of the offer. We gave this title a strong recommendation in our Wii Fit U review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
All five of the following titles are part of the Super Indie Connection Sale that will run until 13th February — if you own any of these downloads, the others are all available at the discounted prices provided below.

Slim pickings again.
Another boring week.
Wooooo! Giana Sisters finally Still, wonder what Nintendo is doing... Another terrible week all round!
I agree, not great; more new content is hopefully close. But still, for those that don't have Runner 2 yet, you absolutely must pick it up at that price.
Nothing interesting. I have some games that'll keep me busy till the release of more major titles.
Giani sisters and toki tori 2 are the only 2 games on discount I don't already own. I'll probabley pick one of them up, not sure which yet.
Edit: I wouldn't be suprised if we also got a game or demo after this weeks direct.
I know it is January, a typically slow month, but Nintendo's promise that there would not be a Software drought in 2014 really rings hollow when they can't even get anything out on the digital side, let alone retail.
Chibi Robo: Photo Finder is already out in the states, it's ready to go Nintendo, why oh why can't you slot that in this week. Crazy, just crazy.
Here's holding thumbs that the reason this is looking so barren is because there's a Direct coming this week and they'll announce some awesome downloads then.
Another week with more money in my wallet. Any of the discounts that I want I already have on another platform.
Horrible week for 3DS:(
I would buy Runner 2, but I'm fairly sure it STILL remains unavailable in Australia. Anyway, between Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion, I'm content.
No Virtual Console?
@Baum897 Bit.Trip 2 is better in my opinion.
Monster hunter wii u, bit.trip 2 for me...
hmm interesting week, yet i don't download full games.. too bad mh3 as for indie games i'm interested in runner 2 and giana sisters
Hmmmmmm interesting week really, I sense a direct due to the fact there is no new content.
However with the financials coming up I don't expect anything at the same time. Ill pick up the Giana Sisters and Runner 2 as the discount makes them way more appealing!
Well still wait for Nintendo direct then
Reading Gamefaqs release, wii u and 3ds is pretty barren compared to ps3 and vita (ps4 still have the same unannounced date too)
Toki Tori 2 may have just hit the sweet spot at that price...
wow, they must want us to pawn our Wii Us or there's a ND with some cool surprises
@MAB
Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's party hasn't even arrived here yet, and it was classified last september. But yeah we won't be seeing unepic for a while as it hasn't been classified.
No love for Australia.
Hmm, nothing for me this week either, its January so I'm not too suprised, but still have to say, that VC on both systems.........
I am looking at MH3 but I just hear so many mixed reviews about it. Its hardcore, its confusing, it takes way too long to learn/hard learning curve. Then, its amazing!
A little help on weather I should get it for the Wii U or the 3DS or at all? I wouldn't get it in this sale, I prefer having a hard copy.
@shaneoh I don't give 2 poops about Bumpies Party... I was looking forward to some Unepic for the aussie day long weekend
Giana Sister, hurray ^o^
Finally they REALLY discounted it! Can't wait to remove it from my wishlist and add it to my collection
@ThomasBW84 Even at that price "Runner 2" remain a title I think some people should avoid to pick up honestly ^_^;
The first Runner is the game that tought me the real meaning of RageQuit, a miracle I didn't break my 3DS and totally not going to put on the same danger my GamePad, not even for a low price XD
No Virtual Console at all? sheez
If you don't own any of those eShop games, can you buy two for the discounted price?
More nothing.
Why do I always eagerly anticipate this weekly news update? It just seems to get worse and worse this past month. Every week I've said "Oh well, should be better next time". But nope.
Seriously. Next week cannot be worse. It can't. For the 3DS we have a hamster game and a discount for a game most people will already have bought by now if they wanted it.
@PALgamer I don't think there's any limit beyond the fact you have to own one of them. From what I can gather, if you own one the other four will all be available for less, so in theory you could buy all four at the cheaper rate.
People who have played Mighty Switch Force, is the Wii U hyper edition better than the 3DS version. If you had to purchase one of the two, which one would you get?
No Bank yet. I hope this means it's getting rereleased earlier than that, but pigs have to grow wings first.
Giana Sisters is surprisingly awesome, been playing it on my PS3. Highly recommended!!
@Baum897 Runner 2 beats Mighty Switch Force hands down.
Does MH3 for the 3ds take up much space?
@Emblem Toki Tori 2 is great. Brilliant puzzle design that requires some serious deductive skills.
Very nice sale on the WiiU eShop - gonna get at least three games, though I really don't understand this "you have to own one to unlock the discount on the others...(??)".
No Virtual Console at all? sheez
See! I told people to be grateful for those weeks we got only one Virtual Console release on each system even if it wasn't a game we wanted. Now we have to wait until next week for a VC game that should have come this week.
Better a crap game than no game at all.
@hiptanaka Well that's no for me then , Giani sisters it is. Thanks
Wow, worst week in a long time, and even so for both systems.
And despite the last few weeks all having been pretty meh.
Wasn't there a post some days ago that Spin the Bottle owners get a free DLC when it comes out in February? I really think it's time to get that little funny party game...
Runner 2 for me. Even Spin thr bottle is a possibility.
None for me this week but as I can see, it's actually worth my while to wait until Unepic is discounted before I purchase it. I don't mind discounts for the first week to encourage first time buyers, but it annoys me when they discount it just because it makes people buy it. Still, they do it BECAUSE it makes people buy it but I can't help but feel a little burned if they didn't offer a discount to begin with.
That said unless I can get strong recommendations from anyone here to buy Unepic? I think I'll wait until a temporary discount.
giana sisters
and maybe mighty switch force... but im not 100% sure about this
I've got all those indie discount games except Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams & Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party. Guess I'll be getting Giana Sisters on discount & that's it this week.
If those discounts come to the Americas, it will be finally time for me to get BIT.TRIP Runner 2. We shall see.
@readyletsgo Its a great game, but if you cant get past the learning curve you will hate it hence the mixed reviews.
If your new to the series I always suggest play with a buddy who knows the game or if you dont have such a friend go check out a few guides. Wii U is the way to go with the inclusion of online that the 3DS is lacking(thankfully MH4 fixes that).
I also suggest doing the digital version as loading screens between zones are slightly speed up and that can give a nice little advantage.
@Warruz Yeah, I dont have any gamer friends TBH. I did try the demo on the 3ds when it was released but I had no idea what to do in it, but then I heard the demo did nothing to show what the game was about, lol typical.
Maybe I'll leave it for the moment. Thanks Warruz!!!!
@Spanjard It's 14,000 blocks so yeah its on the bigger side.
@readyletsgo Wait for MH4 then, its suppose to have an actual half decent tutorial.
Haha, cool, thanks for the advice @Warruz I will wait.
@RedYoshi999 Nah, we got Runner2 in Aus a long while ago. I highly recommend you pick it up on sale if you don't have it. I own almost every Indie game on the e-shop and Runner2 is still my favourite. I liked it so much that I bought the costume pack just so I could give the developers more money!
I quite like how Nintendo is finally doing weekly sales, something other companies have been doing for years now.
A great week for sales. If people are complaining about "another slow week" grab MonHun, Runner2, Mighty Switch Force and Toki Tori. All very good games.
Wow. This is getting embarrasing
To not release a single vc game is strange considering there are over 1000 pal nes / snes games they could pick from even after forgeting about titles they'll never release due to licence issues and such.
Doesn't work like that. Nintendo can only choose from their own games to publish, and even then, they have to go through the process of submitting it to be rated just like everyone else (it may be easier and quicker if the game has already been rated on Wii Virtual Console, I don't know). If the likes of Capcom and Konami choose not to submit certain games to Nintendo to be released on the Virtual Console, Nintendo can't do anything about it until they do. And those third parties are not going to submit all the games they ever developed to Nintendo straight away - it costs them money to get a game rated and the release schedule may mean they would pay for something but have to wait many months until it finally gets released. And no, I don't believe they currently have no games available to them for release - Nintendo must just be spreading the releases out to avoid running out of available games too quickly before new ones become available to them.
Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams for me. I waited for a discount and this sounds very good.
I think I am the only one who haven't picked up MH3U looks like I will this week though

Me as well. Had it on wii but menus where terrible. Just one question do I go 3ds or wii u or both.
arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh choices
Code of princess discount!!! Arghhhh! Hopefully soon, but tempted at bit trip runner and might switch force
@MAB you need a theme song dude!!!
yeah stocko im waiting for that one as well. Like the look of it but not a £25 look
Horrible week for you guys. I hope NA at least gets Mario Bros., SMB3(yeah right), or Blaster Master on the 3DS VC this week.
"And no, I don't believe they currently have no games available to them for release - Nintendo must just be spreading the releases out to avoid running out of available games too quickly before new ones become available to them."
If Nintendo actually has a lot to release but is choosing not to (which I doubt- so far few third party developers have released games for the Wii U VC), that's really foolish. They released more games each week for the Wii, and they never ran out even in ~5 years.
@ThomasBW84 @Ricube - "Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party (KnapNok Games, €2.79 / £2.39 until 13th February, normally €6.99 / £5.99)"
Maybe it's too late to edit now but that normally L5.99 E6.99 game is going to be L7.99 E8.99 in a couple of weeks so that is actually a really good sale price to get the DLC for free. It's actually about the cost of the DLC for the entire game. I'll even pick it up for $3 if the US gets the sale on Thursday.

Rubbish!
Nothing this week.... again.
Heh, I don't know bout you guys but these sales look interesting.
What is Nintendo doing!!!! Don't they read fan sites like this one and many others or Reddit and Neogaf?!?! Nearly every person that owns a Wii U and/or a 3DS is screaming for more VC games and Nintendo simply doesn't listen!!! Look at the American fans who are massively outing their disappointment about SMB3 still not being released yet. Nintendo ignores them! It's like Nintendo doesn't even want our money.
biggest boost for wii u would be gc games. So many classic games we could have on vc
I really hope these sales come to America. I've been waiting a long time for a decent Runner 2 sale, and at those prices I'd also pick up Giana Sisters and Toki Tori 2+ (finally).
@shaneoh I was going to get Bit Trip 2 on sale. Lack of that and Unepic in Australia is making me sad.
i want Shantae and the Pirate's Curse already...
Giana Sisters for me, and MH3U for everyone who doesn't own it already. But don't send me the bill.
@Vriess There is a possible good reason (In terms of making money not in terms of keeping their word) for Super Mario Bros 3. (NSMB2 is still selling pretty well to new 3DS owners and making much more money than they would get from Super Mario Bros 3. Think about how many copies you would need to make the same amount of profit as one copy of NSMB2 (Even without its DLC)).
Still waiting for Poke Bank and Shantae 3DS.
Maybe it will be a catch up week for America
You take care of your hamster's every need in this title, though it's an unremarkable effort — our review explaining why will be published in the next 24 hours.
@ThomasBW84 That must explain why the review is nearly two months late...
An absolutely crap week...
might get runner 2 BUT... WHERE'S Pokemon bank!!
runner 2 and maybe toki tori 2+ for me. Where all these new indie games arriving. Im sure Nintendo back in November promised 30 indie games to be released before 2014 and we ended up with about 4
Did they fix the Wii U issue with Giana Sisters? Something with the sound when playing on the gamepad? I might get that seeing as it's discounted.
I can confirm that some minutes ago the North American eShop got updated, and it already has a discount on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on 3DS and Wii U, it's now $19.99 until February 3rd (normally $39.99). It's a really nice deal, since the Wii U version just got a permanent discount some days ago. It was $59.99, then $39.99 and now with the temporary discount, well, I just mentioned it.
EDIT: Confirmed the discount on Wii U eShop.
Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party for me thats about it now if MH3 Ultimate was the same price in the UK @Olmectron mentioned I would get that as well as it is no cause I played Tri to death and would rather wait for MH4 Ultimate.
Still no Pokémon Bank? I was really hoping for an announcement in the Download Update...
@Jazzer94 So bad the UK eShop prices are way more expensive than some of other European countries. I still envy you, I would love to have SMB 3 already on the Gamepad. I can play it on Wii mode, but it's not the same just because we can't use the Gamepad as controller...
You know you're benig ripped off when your half price is still $10 more than some other region's full price (MH3U). Such a shame.
Nothing on the VC?
Iwata said he wanted to improve it, and has taken a kicking over profits, I really don't understand Nintendo.
Poor, poor week yet again but why? Come on Nintendo we need vc u need sales!
@BakaKnight
Never played first Runner, but thankfully this one has three difficulty levels (even on normal it drives you mad more than few times. Oh those stairs!). I bought it last fall and damn it's a great game!
But FINALLY! Giana Sisters o/ (the music of original C64 game is forver in my save file....I mean in my head)
Fit U I got when registered meter and MH3U..well, it's too time consuming and I never finished MH3 so I don't see why to get this one. But it's a great game, but my mood changes and so does the game I play.
@MAB @MadAdam81
Yeah I was looking foward to Unepic too. But we aren't likely to see it for a while as it hasn't been submitted for classification.
Vc...........
Good grief. This is hardly going to get the share prices back up is it? YOU HAVE A VALUABLE BACK CATALOGUE!!!!! - SELL IT TO THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BUY IT!!!!
@Olmectron Indeed. If you don't know if you'd like Monster Hunter, I think you'd have to jump at $20.
I hope these discounts make it to NA. I don't have some of these games yet
@millarrp If you're interested on Monster Hunter, then it's already on sale in North America at $19.99 on both Wii U and 3DS. However, if you talk about the indie games, I hope that promotion make it here too. Just missing one of those games, but still...
appalling week and the £150 paypa funds ive hung onto for nearly a year for virtual console is now getting spent on actual gamecube software on ebay. well done nintendo for taking over a year to do pretty much NOTHING.
SNES launched with super mario world and fzero
n64 launched with super mario world
gamecube launched with luigis mansion and was the last great console to offer a literal raft of first party quality.
wii launched with wii sports
Wii U????? where is nintendo's killer app? over a year since launch? they need it and they need it fast!!!!
a short term fix would be to slowly build nostalgia fans thriugh the virtual console................. wouldnt it?

@Olmectron
I was meaning the indie games. I got the wii u version of monster hunter 3 the last time it was on sale
I can't remember the last time I downloaded anything from the eShop on either system!
Giana sisters is a solid game. Sigh I really wanted to play UnEpic, wonder if the devs have a twitter account.
@Seren77 Yes, it is this one: https://twitter.com/unepic_fran
Although, most of his posts are in spanish. However, he seems to answer very well in english.
@Olmectron thank you!
@KnightRider666 I was all talking about how 2014 was going to be better than 2013 was for 3ds owners in December but the way things have started in 2014 in the Eshop I might have to eat my words. The current negativity about Nintendo's sales figures don't help either. Plus if we don't get MarioGolf this year with some nice online play in 2014 , that will show us exactly how committed Nintendo is to online play. I just have this feeling they will screw it up somehow
@Windy: I'm worried at this point too. I can understand a drought of physical games, but digital and VC? There's just no excuse for that. I've recently bought all the GB & GBC VC games out of sheer boredom b/c nothing new has been released.
@KnightRider666 They definitely need to get all over VC! They should have been bringing 5 to 10 games out a month on that. Also at least be doing 1 3D Classic game a month. The way they have dropped 3D Classics has really been frustrating to me. At least Sega picked up the ball on that
@Windy: Tell me about it. And the fact that the way Sega did the Game Gear games with remappable buttons and screen size options blows Nintendo out of the water.
Probably the worst week I've seen yet. I've already got Bit Trip Runner 2, Toki Tori 2+, Giana Sisters and Mighty Switch Force HD, and MH3U on both Wii U and 3DS. Nothing else there interests me.
Agree with the other guys, the support for the VC is pitiful and I don't understand why. Can they not at least give us Game & Watch Gallery 3 sometime? We've already had the first 2.
I've recently had to buy another Xbox 360 (old one died) so it's probably a blessing in disguise to stop me spending any more money really. Plus I still haven't downloaded Knytt Underground or UnEpic yet.
@ToxieDogg: I'd love to have Battletoads NES on the 3DS. B/c of Rare's involvement, I doubt we'll ever see that.
Monster Hunter in US is 20$ and in Europe 35 euros??? Sorry I wont pay more than the double, Nintendo.
Is Bit.Runner now fully patched? I heard of a serious freezing bug...
I got reply back from Fran about UnEpic and he doesn't know why it hasn't been released in Australia, he was not made aware of any restrictions.
"No entiendo por qué no ha salido. Nunca se ha hablado de restricción en Australia"
@Seren77 Cheers mate, hopefully they sort it out soon
Woah, nice to finally see some of the discounts i've been waiting for.
Will get Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition and Spin the Bottle: Bumpie's Party.
I would've downloaded the latter before February 13th anyway, but the discount makes it all the sweeter.
@BakaKnight What are you talking about? Runner 2 is currently the best indie game on wii u.
@luke88 What I'm talking about is already written in the comment you replied to ^_^;
Anyway never said Runner 2 is a "bad" game, quite the opposite I'm sure it's a great one; my comment was just related to why I feel it's not a game for everyone (or at least not for me XD).
Anyway I would like to turn back your question, what are you talking about? Why Runner 2 is the best indie on WiiU in your opinion? I was simply planning to ignore the offer on Runner 2 since my bad experience with the first title, but always hard to ignore a good offer on a good game so I wouldn't mind to hear more opinions about it ^^
@readyletsgo get the wii version 2nd hand very cheap! You could also pick up a 2nd hand PSP and a copy of Monster Hunter Freedom which is good for less than £30.
@darthstuey hmm, I'd rather not buy another older system, right now I have a GameCube, Wii and WiiU, then a gba micro and 3ds and a PS3 lol so a psp would be a bit much with the backlog of games I need to get through lol. Maybe in a couple years I'll look into gettin the WiiU version
@darthstuey also, I do like to buy games new and sealed so the dev gets some money. I'll keep an eye on the 3DS version over the nest while.
