@ThanosReXXX You've got a point! Team17 released some killer titles. I just thought an olive branch in the guise of Project-X SE would be a nice start.
Being the target for this game it is on my wishlist now! However, Team17, guys, Project-X SE Switch edition, c'mon, you can do it. If you can relaunch Super Frog...
I have to admit that The Bitmap Brothers artwork (and generally sound too) was always on point, however, I preferred the Team17 & Bullfrog titles of the time, or dare I say Psygnosis. I never really 'got' the Chaos Engine, but I did have an absolute blast with Speedball & Speedball 2.
Still, someone really needs to wake up Manfred Trenz
It’s on my wish list, it also gets backlog priority! Thankfully, due to the fact that I still have the original PC disk and the team released the source code for the game (on github), I can play this on any system that I can compile it on
Still buying the switch version! Aspyr are a pretty solid porting crew, with years of experience porting games to macOS.
I think streaming is fine for things you don’t really care about. Most of my games are digital with a few physical games. If this is the future I’m not certain I’ll enjoy it that much. Perhaps there will be a resurgence of physical things post the streaming age, vinyl is still a thing.
I like digital purchases as I’m not a fan of clutter.
The GBA SP. That was (and still is) a fantastic bit of kit! It was like a portable SNES to me. I took mine everywhere, it made the bus journey to work almost palatable. It was strange how I had a moderately up to date gaming computer and the PS2 at the time, but this little box of delights was the one I played on most of the time. The games were just solid along with the control system... ahhh memories (and good ones to boot).
I doubt the mobile app will be merged with the OS. I highly doubt Nintendo want to police that. My older two children have their own phones, we keep lazy eye on what they’re up up to. My youngest does not have access to a mobile. When my children stay at mine, gaming is mainly an interactive (for all of us) experience, but there are parents that use these devices as babysitters. It wouldn’t take much for some unwanted interaction and that’s probably the last thing Nintendo want to deal with. Keeping the app on a separate system makes a lot of sense from that perspective. If I want to game with my friends that’s normally organised through a WhatsApp group anyway.
Melee has always been meh-lay to me. My ex-wife was (and still is) the big Nintendo fan, so most of the Nintendo specifics I’ve picked up from her. Rightly or wrongly (with the pronunciation), it’s easier to communicate using the same dialect as our daughter spends most of her time with mum and I don’t want to confuse things.
@Fake-E-Lee Thanks for all the comments here! The game came up on a sale, so, standard practice for me (it looked awesome in the trailer, but I’ve been burned before), is check NL and the comment section. Due to your continuous updates I bought the game, besides that... who wouldn’t trust Old Gregg?
@gcunit I'm sure there are some that are unfit to bear the legendary title. Can't think of any off the top of my head though.
I would love to see some of the system specific shooters though. Anarchy (Amiga Defender clone), Amramlyte (The C64 version, not the Amiga version), Delta (and maybe Sanxion, but I think it was the music that made Sanxion what it was...) and Team17's Project X (having inertia from too many power-ups was genius!). It might be nice to see a re-imagining of Cybernoid (I/II) too. level by level puzzle/shooter could be interesting, but we'd need to get Jeroen Tel involved! Also, can someone get hold of Manfred Trenz and that marvellously creative brain of his!?
Here is my money and here is my money and here is my money... Yep. As soon as I got in I bought all 3, just waiting for 3 to finish downloading. Memories! But like so many people have said, RTCW & Quake (12&4) wouldn't go amis! But if you are going to bring the older quakes, oh my brothers, please have an option to use the classic software render... Please!
@TeslaChippie Funny you mentioned that. As I was typing that I had a few ideas for a dungeon crawler where you’d get buffs dependant on your relationship level. I was trying to mentally create a game where dating could draw me in, even that idea failed.
However, it went a long the lines of you can date multiple people to get multiple buffs, but the best buffs only come from a solid relationship. I still wouldn’t play that, but it was a fun mental excercise.
It’s a pickle to be in I’m certain. There was speculation going round, that Nintendo waited a few days before coming down on the C64 port of SMB. Nintendo are legally obliged to protect their IP. If a fan gets away with an homage, what’s to stop countless developers jumping on the band wagon? It simply has to be stopped before it can get out of hand. Mario fits into a child friendly environment, I doubt it would take long before that got twisted.
Even if this was aimed at men and full of women I still wouldn’t buy it. Just not the dating sim player (he says after wedding Leah in Stardew Valley).
All the Quakes would be a welcomed edition. Being a fan of the influx of retro pixel art games, a true software render of Quake 1 and 2 would utterly smash it for me. There have been a great many community updates to the source too. Lest we forget Doom, Doom 2 and Ultimate. I’ve lost count at the amount of repurchases (lost and or error prone due to wear, discs) I’ve made of these games, I’d still buy them again.
@molkom It’s a mix between 2097 and Fusion. If you didn’t like Fusion on the PS2 this may not be the game for you. It is blisteringly fast and limited margin for error. I kinda liked it on PC, but didn’t love it. I was never a fan of Fusion, 2097 had the control system nailed. Got a lot of time for wip3out too.
I will still be picking this up for the Switch, provided the controls are tight. I think my issue with the PC version may be due to lack of power, so I’m not holding the dev team responsible for my inadequacy. I’ll just wait and see what the reviews look like first.
Dead Cells! I was supposed to be going through Darksiders (again, because reasons), however I fired up Dead Cells as it’s been a while... then it was bed time. Darksiders will have to wait I guess.
I was super hyped for this when I saw the initial announcement. It got me with it’s wipeout, but ridge racer vibe. Then I saw a few YouTube videos and noticed the sound design was really crap. Visually it ticks a lot of boxes... but that screaming vacuum cleaner? No! The soundtrack proper was not the metal/club hybrid that was shown in the trailer either. And now we have an extremely lacklustre game that I’m so very glad I didn’t buy.
It's almost as if Horizon Chase Turbo was built for the platform. I have it on mobile & steam, now switch too (which is fast becoming my gaming platform of preference). I will say this however; I do not get the OutRun feels from HCT, more the Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge II feels.
I did pick up R-Type Dimensions DX and (in true fashion) could not get the first stage tune from R-Type out of my head all day. Probably for the amount of time I spent listening to it trying to best that first level all those years ago.
Big fan of the series, I will pick this up at some point. Although I really would love a collection like the Capcom SF bundle. R-Type 1 & 2 are pretty sweet, but R-Type 3 is better. Then R-Type Delta hit and smashed R-Type 3. I know R-Type Final wasn't what everyone hoped for (I happened to really enjoy that game), but a complete collection would be really sweet (let's throw Leo in there too). Released at £60 would still make it insta-buy!
Been playing this most of the afternoon and... I have to say so far I'm a little disappointed. I did get into the early access steam version, which I can no longer play due to OS restrictions (long story!)
I love wipeout and pretty much all (except fusion, that can burn horribly for eternity!) it's iterations. Same goes for RollCage, but what wipeout lacked RollCage had in spades... FUN!! Wipeout was a much more serious in feel racer whereas RollCage brought fun with it, it scratched a very specific itch very well, but this (Grip) seems quite far removed. It feels a lot more dead and empty than RollCage did (still does I guess, as the developer has fixed up some issues with the code and released it on his website).
I really, really want to like this game, just not sure it's totally my bag.
I can see a lot of reasons why it is the way it is.
1.> The internet is full of [insert preferred expletive]
2.> To protect children as, lets be fair here, this is a large part of the target audience. Children and family.
3.> How many complaints exist thus far regarding battery life? Throw in telecoms and it will get worse.
4.> The Switch OS does not seem to support multiple applications using the network (if you are downloading an application and launch an application that requires net work access, the download stops). This would mean the code would probably need to be built in to every application for comms.
5.> There are already better options available. I use discord, have done for a crazy amount of time. I use it on my phone, if the desktop freezes or whatever I can let the group know what's going on.
This all ties in to the Netflix, YouTube issue for me. There are better options available. I think I tried to use the Wii browser once and quickly went back to using my phone. Same issue with the PSP browser. I know these are all considered ghetto tech now, but todays browsers are a lot more demanding. HTML5 and CSS3 is a thing (that also includes gratuitous amounts of javascript), this wasn't the case back then and I'm pretty certain all those browsers failed the ACID3 test.
@Supadav03 The youngest here is 4 (my current frame of reference) the other 2 are old enough to be doing their own thing and I wouldn’t even be a challenge for my son as far as overwatch is concerned.
She does enjoy the Lego games, but her main is Lego the movie which is played through steam as it’s unavailable for the Switch. She is enjoying Dust (which I enjoy too), but Lego undercover has turned into my game. It’s one of those ‘can you do this bit daddy?’ games, while she sits and observes and I’m just running through the whole thing... kids eh?
As long as it doesn't fit the standard 'sub-standard kids game' archetype, I will pick this up for my daughter.
There are a few iPad games for children that are not god awful. So I'm hoping this will at least present some challenge. Currently we play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe together, it would be good to have other games she can play.
If Wipeout, Wipeout 2097 (XL) and Wip3out incl. Special edition are on there I'll get it. I still play those games, even now. Sadly through emulated means as my disks are scratched to heck.
See Capcom... See! Do you see?!?!?!?!!?!? Other companies are releasing their dark, other worldly beat 'em ups! So... Uhmmmm time for Darkstalkers, yeah?
Bought this as soon as it dropped. It's a fantastic treat on the eyeballs, ears and brain. It's combat is pretty soothing. However, If you're the kind of person that has completed Dead Cells without picking up any additional weapons and power-ups you will despise it.
I've heard Dust: An Elysian Tail being referred as a 90's Saturday morning cartoon. It's not a ground breaking story, but it is thoroughly enjoyable.
Nintendo: NES, SNES, N64, Game Cube, Wii, WiiU, Switch.
NB. The Nintendo list is probably not complete, it's off the top of my head. But the point is valid. Wii and WiiU are similar. The hand helds have had a similar naming convention with 2 iterations (GB & DS (I'm ignoring the VB on purpose!))
@Sithee I too would do less than savoury things to myself for a version of Outrun on the Switch! However, I’m pretty certain SEGA no longer have the licence for the given manufacturer of a certain red sports car. I think this is why Outrun 2006 was pulled from the steam store.
Apple tried to enforce a policy against the home brew community on the idevices. It was thrown out of court. On top of this, a lot of the hackers that opened the firmware have been credited with finding exploits that have now been closed.
From my personal experience things like this can be really useful. I didn’t have any pirated games on my PSP, but thanks to the home brew people I could back up and store games I had paid for. It also meant I could store multiple games on a memory stick, this meant I had a lot less stuff to carry around with me.
I had no interest nor will to overwrite the PSP firmware, that changed after an update. I had downloaded the additional Wipeout Pure tracks and discovered I could no longer play these, as the firmware stopped the ability to read these files from the memory stick. So I looked into custom firmware as a result of this.
Back in the day they meant something, but only where game journalists used the full breadth of the numbers (Amiga Power was king of this). With that magazine 0%-40% was bad, 41%-60% was actual average and still worth getting if you were a fan of the genre/publisher, 61%-75% was above average and probably worth picking up. 76%-82% was a great score and anything over that was totally worth buying regardless, at least that's how I read it. This site in particular does not use all available numbers and makes them pretty moot, I'm not saying the reviews are bad, I personally don't read the scores as some form of truth. I do read the reviews and make my own mid up.
Perhaps a new way of approaching this system is ask yourself a few questions...
1. Could I stand by a recommendation of this game to a friend and defend that recommendation?
2. Could I recommend this game to a fan of the genre even though I can spot flaws in it?
And from that formulate some form of stamp or seal of approval, eg. We Recommend this game. We do not recommend this game. We only recommend this game to fans of the genre.
I guess you'd have to figure out the wording so as not to cause offence to publishers/developers if that could cause an issue. However, hard lines need to be drawn. I'd probably go on a rampage if Rise of the Robots got a re-issue and a score above 1.
I'm not totally sold on this. I wasn't a big fan of the updated Street Fighter II with the cartoon visuals. It seemed to have the same amount of animation frames as the original, that made the game look more jerky. The lack of proper analog control did not help it.
Although, this is dotemu! I have a lot of respect for those guys as they put in a great deal of effort. It's seldom a packaged emulator with a rom attached to it.
From the list it's Hyper light Drift, but the games I'm most looking forward to playing on the Switch this September are Broforce and Dust: An Elysian Tail. I have got both games on other platforms, but (and you've guessed it...) I would love to play them on the go
For me, this is the game the new revision of Strider should have been!
There are so many nods to various games in Dead Cells, but in my mind all I can think of is that time I threw money in this arcade machine and finally beat that damned ape boss at the beginning of level 2.
It's not the 'Spider Rune', it's the 'Strider Rune'!
@Donutman How good is this game? Here's my personal take, I bought a Nintendo Switch to play it on the go! That's right, I bought a console so I could play this game any where. It's that good!
Granted, in the meantime I have found a treasure trove of other games that I haven't played since the SNES days and some new ones to boot. But I bought the Switch for Dead Cells.

The GBA SP. That was (and still is) a fantastic bit of kit! It was like a portable SNES to me. I took mine everywhere, it made the bus journey to work almost palatable. Re: Talking Point: Please Nintendo, Can We Get These Things In Switch Firmware Version 10?

My youngest does not have access to a mobile. When my children stay at mine, gaming is mainly an interactive (for all of us) experience, but there are parents that use these devices as babysitters. I know this is old, but I have to chip in here.
Re: Nintendo Download: 6th September (North America)
Can't talk, playing Broforce!
Re: Dead Cells On Switch Is Outselling The PlayStation 4 Version
@JoeDiddley I saw one physical copy in GAME last week. Near as damn it picked it up too, despite already owning in on Steam and the Switch eShop.
Re: Talking Point: Do We Still Need Review Scores?
Re: Hands On: Streets Of Rage 4 Is A Grand (Upper) Revival
I'm not totally sold on this. I wasn't a big fan of the updated Street Fighter II with the cartoon visuals. It seemed to have the same amount of animation frames as the original, that made the game look more jerky. The lack of proper analog control did not help it.
Although, this is dotemu! I have a lot of respect for those guys as they put in a great deal of effort. It's seldom a packaged emulator with a rom attached to it.
Re: Video: 13 Nintendo Switch Games You Should Look Out For In September
From the list it's Hyper light Drift, but the games I'm most looking forward to playing on the Switch this September are Broforce and Dust: An Elysian Tail. I have got both games on other platforms, but (and you've guessed it...) I would love to play them on the go
Re: Gallery: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Full Character Roster (Updated)
So... Captain Falcon is here and not in MarioKart 8 Deluxe (crosses fingers, prays to big pink pixie in the sky)
Re: Review: Dead Cells (Switch)
For me, this is the game the new revision of Strider should have been!
There are so many nods to various games in Dead Cells, but in my mind all I can think of is that time I threw money in this arcade machine and finally beat that damned ape boss at the beginning of level 2.
It's not the 'Spider Rune', it's the 'Strider Rune'!
Re: Gallery: This Dead Cells Book By Third Editions Looks Beautiful And Informative
Oh; and yes. I want the book.
