Rebellion has just announced that it has purchased the brand and IP portfolio of The Bitmap Brothers, one of the UK's most exciting and influential '90s studios.
Founded in 1987 by Mike Montgomery, Eric Matthews and Steve Kelly, The Bitmap Brothers were responsible for the likes of Xenon II: Megablast, Speedball II, Gods and The Chaos Engine. Considered to be the first 'rock stars' of the games industry, the studio produced titles which were visually stunning as well as incredibly playable and gained an enviable reputation amongst the press and gamers alike.
While most of the company's key staffers moved onto other projects, Montgomery retained control of the brand and has recently worked with external studios to update existing Bitmap properties (Gods was recently remastered for modern systems, including Switch).
Here's the PR:
Rebellion, one of Europe’s largest independent creative studios, is proud to announce its acquisition of the iconic The Bitmap Brothers brand and portfolio.
Described as “Gaming’s first rockstars,” The Bitmap Brothers were responsible for what many regard as some of the stand-out games of the late 80s and early 90s, including titles such as Xenon, Z: Steel Soldiers, Speedball and Chaos Engine. Rebellion plans to bring classic The Bitmap Brothers games to new platforms, and going forward to create new titles based on its beloved licenses.
The news comes as the UK’s National Videogame Museum unveiled its new UK Collection which launches with a focus on Rebellion, recognizing the studio’s achievements across multimedia, spanning more than a quarter of a century. This will lead to Rebellion being featured in the first Great British Studios exhibition, launching at a future date in the museum.
“We’re delighted with the addition of The Bitmap Brothers to the ever-growing Rebellion portfolio,” said Rebellion CEO and Co-founder Jason Kingsley OBE. “The Bitmap Brothers are renowned for making great games and for bringing gaming into the mainstream with inimitable style. We’ve known Mike Montgomery for many years, and we’re honoured by the faith and trust that he has shown in us by passing on the torch. We’ll strive to be vigilant custodians of one of gaming’s great names.”
To celebrate today’s announcement, Rebellion have unveiled a special photo featuring company Co-founders Jason and Chris Kingsley OBE and The Bitmap Brothers co-founder Mike Montgomery, harking back to the classic images of The Bitmap Brothers that gained mainstream attention in the 1990s.
What do you make of this news? What Bitmap Brothers titles would you like to see resurrected?

Chaos engine please. How indie are they with big publishers?
Woohoo! Now release more Atari Jaguar games Rebellion. You know you want to...
I would loooooooooooooooooooooove to get a Bitmap Brothers collection but of course that I am even more willing to FULLY FUND a true Speedball 3 release.
@tendonerd yes I'd love a bit of classic co-op multiplayer on the switch. I really loved how unique each character felt in the chaos engine.
Still play The Chaos Engine on me SNES mini , what a game!
(I still have my original SNES cartridge too) 😇
@FlashmanHarry Its a bit stiff to play now a days but it could still be made into something better... But I have a feeling it would end up being a fps online competitive class based game.
I can't believe they mentioned Z: Steel Soldiers but not Z.
This is great news.
However. We lost a great developer when Epic recently bought the legendary Factor 5.
Bitmap Brothers Collection please for Switch. ( or any console ) Either original with a bit of polish or remakes.
@ Shiryu Yes !!! a Speedball 3. I went through so many joysticks playing Speedball 2. I was always amazed how much control you had curling the ball, passing, power, shooting etc you had with just a joystick and one button.
@tendonerd Rebellion are a publisher themselves with Sold Out as their distributor for physical releases.
By the way, the picture of the Rebellion CEOs and Mike Montgomery is in keeping with the spirit of the Bitmaps' picture of Montgomery, Steve Kelly and Eric Matthews stood beside Robert Maxwell's helicopter.
I loved Xenon on the Amiga, and a remake or threequel would be awesome!
An expanded port of Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe please.
Keep the game as it is, but expand the roster, perhaps some stadium variations, and add online multiplayer, leagues and tournaments.
By the way, in 2017 YouTuber Kim Justice (and I know she has some fans here) did a great video on the history of The Bitmap Brothers, charting their origins, rise to fame and sad-but-inevitable burnout.

I enjoyed Chaos Engine back in the day, lots of hours with my older brother went into that game..
GODS.. It's probably the worst game in my SNES collections (and for sure the only one I never completed), the remake looks as bad as the old one played.. I was dumbfounded when the remake was announced..
The game I want to see remade the most from their portfolio is Z.
That game was well made, challenging, addictive and seriously fun
@Shiryu I would love this. Played Speedball 2 on my Amiga to death! With todays tech surely they could create a great game, and retain the atmosphere of the original
@pr0d1gy1980 They have tried and failed in the past... but I want to believe!
Great news if something respectful of the original source material materialises. A Bitmap compilation would be amazing. Speedball 2 is a masterpiece and the sequels and remakes have not been up to standard so far, id love to see that change. Speedball 3 would be a dream come true. The switch is fast turning into one of the most diverse consoles, and is on its way to becoming one of the best of all time.
I have to admit that The Bitmap Brothers artwork (and generally sound too) was always on point, however, I preferred the Team17 & Bullfrog titles of the time, or dare I say Psygnosis. I never really 'got' the Chaos Engine, but I did have an absolute blast with Speedball & Speedball 2.
Still, someone really needs to wake up Manfred Trenz
Surely the first rock stars of software/publishing had to be Psygnosis?
Amazing news. Rebellion have been doing a great job in their comics division of both reissuing and resurrecting classic British comics. If they can start doing similar with classic British developers, we have some great things coming. And to start with Bitmap Briothers makes it all the sweeter.
This would be amazing. Anything as good as brutal deluxe would be instant purchase. Have bought that game multiple times on various platforms, would love to have it on the switch.
Guys, Chaos Engine already has a modern remake on Steam and last-gen consoles.
What we need is Speedball 3 and a Z sequel that doesn't suck.
