I'll get this as I currently sub to Retro Gamer magazine.
It's content has been pretty bad lately though. A recent 'review' of Air Zonk was more of a 1 page rant about the game only being available on the old Wii VC and not informative about the game whatsoever, it's all largely devolved into opinion pieces rather than useful information about retro stuff :/
Played through it all twice now and got all the Chaos Emeralds on my second run, and asides from the home button taking 1 or 2 seconds to access the menu sometimes, I haven't encountered a single glitch
Always worrying when I see stuff like this. I'll only get the EA games on Switch I actually want if everybody else buys thousands of copies of FIFA as I've got zero interest in it (haven't bought a FIFA game on any platform since 1998)
Completed it now with 100% collectibles (they unlock a couple of nice little extras ) but still waiting for the Time Trial mode to be patched in.....it'll be a real shame if they don't bother because otherwise I've got no reason to load it up again now.
Actually, it is pretty sad to see things disappearing from the Wii U like this, seeing as it's lost BBC iPlayer as well. End of a (short) era I suppose Hopefully we're not all lamenting the Switch like this in 4 years time.
@manu0. Eh? Hardly any of the ones I use demand upfront payments. I regularly buy stuff from Shopto, GAME's site and the official Nintendo Store, I've also used Tesco for games in the past as well and and none of those take payment until the item is dispatched.
Everybody complaining it should be the same price as on PS4....you do realise you can't just disconnect the PS4 version from the TV mid game and carry on playing it elsewhere, don't you? The Switch version is the console and portable version both in one.
@Vriess Developing for the XB1 and PS4 has turned out to be pretty nonviable for Respawn too though, hasn't it? And the Switch is 'underpowered' but they managed to get Titanfall 1 running on an Xbox 360 and were in talks to port it to the Vita as well (and probably would have done if Sony had paid them enough)....so, yeah, I wouldn't take Respawn's comments very seriously if I was you
As soon as I can afford it I'll get it. Switch Day (as I'm now calling it) is going to be costing me a LOT of money, thanks to the new Breath Of The Wild amiibos being released as well. So can't afford any games other than Zelda to begin with, sadly (I say 'sadly' but expect Zelda to be fantastic )
@manu0 It's only a very, very small selection of SNES games though. The best thing I ever did was bought an Everdrive for my old SNES, I can play anything I want to on it now.
Whatever the situation with digital games, the fact is that if you're new to a console or don't decide you actually want a game until a year or 2 later and it's been pulled, then you're out of luck. And that sucks.
Not everybody buys games as soon as they launch. It doesn't make any sense that we should only have a limited amount of time to get something from a digital platform. Really annoyed me with Scott Pilgrim on PS3/Xbox 360 too...I do actually have that but now they've pulled it I can't get the last bit of DLC with the online mode or Wallace as a playable character.
I think what's frustrating to those of us who played (and enjoyed) Devil's Third is that most people who seemingly hate it and badmouth it never played it, or ever had any intention of playing it. Very easy to criticise something you have little to no knowledge of.
I live in the UK and I'm not complaining about the presentation time, but I am finding the generalisations a bit offensive. 'You people in the UK should have bought more Nintendo stuff, your taste in gaming sucks, you guys only like Pokemon' I see. That may be true for many people but there's still a lot of hardcore Nintendo fans/collectors here. I've bought about 3/4 or more of all Nintendo first party games released on all formats over the last 25 years and tons of third party games too. Probably spent more money on Nintendo games and products in my lifetime than most people being critical of the UK actually.
@PotatoTheGreat Fact is, there are multiple ways they'll be able to tell who was playing Pokemon Sun/Moon too early from 'stamps' left on the 3DS as soon as it's connected online.
As I say, those few people who claim to have legit retail copies early, I'd like to see some evidence of that....photos of the box/cart, receipts etc. I've not seen any so far.
@Peach64 And who's to say that they won't lift the bans on anybody who can provide evidence of that? For all the people I see complaining about being banned, I don't see any of them posting pics of an official physical copy of Pokemon Sun/Moon that they own. And it would have to be a physical copy, as the download versions aren't officially available yet.
The 'trying it out' excuse doesn't wash at all. There's a demo available for those people who want to try it first on the E-shop, end of discussion.
If you then still went ahead and downloaded the full game to 'try it out' then your intention was simply to have the full game early without actually paying for it at all (ie. piracy).
There's a fairly easy way for Nintendo to catch people anyway, even if they don't use the online modes....you know that play history thing the 3DS has? The one that shows you how many hours you've played each game for? It'll also show you the very first day you started playing it on. Don't think this information isn't being transmitted to Nintendo every time you connect your 3DS online.
The ship has sailed on Project CARS now...it's launched on other platforms, been underwhelming and hardly set the charts alight so there's no reason to bother releasing it on other platforms now as the mass market interest is simply no longer there.
Switch needs fresh new games, not ports of games that are months/years old. That's partially what hampered the Wii U at launch.
I know some people who are trashing Devil's Third claim to have played it, but the majority haven't.
From my own point of view, I got it at launch and really enjoyed the campaign. Certainly not a 10/10 classic but not every game needs to be, does it? It's a solid 7/10 for me, has some technical issues (like the framerate at times) but it's always action packed and frantic and keeps you on your toes, controls are fluid and intuitive too.
But don't take my word for it as I'm not a 'professional' reviewer....just blindly agree with everybody else out there who jumped on the hate bandwagon for something they had no intention of ever giving a chance to.
I honestly think Nintendo Life's review was pretty fair.....a lot of the reviews were crap though, bashing the game just for the sake of bashing it. Kind of like when that movie Pixels was released and bashing it to death became the 'cool' thing to do even though in reality it was just...'eh'...and not really that bad.
@Fandabidozi I won't name it here, but the site I've been using for NES ROMS for the last few years is still up and running fine. And I found a couple of complete ROMset downloads really easily a couple of months back. It's honestly not too difficult to find them at all at the moment.
A virtual aquarium and nothing else this week? Yeesh. So this is possibly how the Wii U is going to bow out this Xmas? Not with a bang, but with a whimper....
I feel really bad for people in the US who couldn't get one, that has been a shambolic situation and I'd blame Reggie mostly.
But over here in England? Preorders were up on Nintendo's official UK site for quite a while and with GAME too (as much as I dislike GAME, they are useful at times)...I had zero problems preordering one and it even arrived 2 days early.
Over here at least, I can't help thinking that a lot of the complainers are bandwagon jumpers who've suddenly decided to buy one at the last minute like sheep. The NES has never been massively popular in the UK like it was elsewhere, and Nintendo stuff has been tricky to get at launch here for years now, so people should have learned...especially with it launching so close to Christmas.
Sorry if I sound a bit unsympathetic because everybody I know who preordered one here got one. I wouldn't use sites like Zavvi at any rate as they are notoriously unreliable and not just with Nintendo stuff.
I do genuinely feel bad for you guys in the US though. It was completely ridiculous in this day and age and in a country the size of America that Nintendo Of America didn't take preorders on their site.
Others have said this before, but this is my first time of saying it....this is the worst week ever. Truly pathetic. When there are no new indie games going on the E-Shop, Nintendo should add at least one or two VC games. Their excuse before has always been that somebody has to take the time to do it. So? Is everybody way too busy doing nothing at Nintendo this Xmas? It doesn't take every bit of manpower and resources you have to launch Pokemon, and we're not getting any new Switch details until January, so this is pathetic and lazy.
None of the games on the collection are really that outstanding to be honest. Everybody who wants to play Sonic has played it to death by now, Altered Beast is....meh, same for Galaxy Force and Thunderblade. So that leaves Puyo Puyo 2 and Fantasy Zone 2.
They'd have been better doing a Streets Of Rage collection or something, and then included some other games like Shinobi, Shadow Dancer or Golden Axe...games with a lot more weight behind them.
Plus also, most people will be spending money on the NES Mini at the mo, and there's been a few big hitter releases out for the PS4 and XB1 like Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Skyrim Remastered and Call Of Duty....and Pokemon is out soon. Most people aren't rich, so some games will fall by the wayside sadly.
Not a bad week. The DLC for Fast Racing NEO is welcome, as is the Phoenix Wright episode. And Azure Striker Gunvolt 2! First one was ace! More of you should buy it!
I don't think this is too bad a game, and it's better than the first on SNES....play them side by side and you'll see that the asides from the 2 player mode and extra stage and better presentation that's already been mentioned....the collision detection feels a lot more spot on and a lot less cheap in Final Fight 2. Granted, the arcade version of the first game is still best.
Turtles In Time was a much better option on SNES (and I like that more that Streets Of Rage 2 as well ) but obviously due to licensing issues that's probably never coming to VC
I wish them luck, but the only game of theirs I liked was Mutant Mudds and even that was more for the art style. Xeodrifter (as has been mentioned) was very short and overpriced for what it was and Moon Chronicless (which didn't make it over here to Europe anyway) should NEVER have been episodic, that kind of approach barely ever works for anything that isn't a Telltale point and click adventure.
Still, onwards and upwards. Hopefully one of the 2 new studios will have a hit on it's hands
@Anti-Matter Yes. I think it might only affect the PAL version of the game though. I definitely encountered it and had to google it to make sure there was nothing wrong with my copy. This article is from back when the game was first released in 2007....
Has the game breaking bug been removed from Super Paper Mario? In the original version, if you don't find a certain key before talking to a certain character early on, the Wii console freezes and locks up, requiring the plug to be pulled out of the socket as even holding down the power button won't work!
I still have this on SNES and, outside of the loading pauses I enjoy it a lot. Me and my mate put hours into 2 player back in the day, it dominated our entire summer's evenings at one point. Of course, later on I got Alpha 3 on PS1 and that was even better, and I've also since got better versions of Alpha 2 (both on Saturn and the Street Fighter Alpha Collection on PS2) but the SNES version, as my introduction to the SF Alpha games will always be special to me. Even things like Dan's super taunt are in the SNES version, amazing how much they packed in.
People keep talking about a games drought harming Wii U sales at the start. Really? What was selling the PS4 for the first year then? It certainly wasn't the games because nearly all of them were ones I either already had on PS3, or could get on PS3 without having to upgrade....it wasn't until Assassin's Creed Unity came out that I finally got a PS4, and we all know how AC Unity turned out (sigh). Even Destiny, I thought 'Great, this thing will be best on PS4 and supported for years'...turns out I was fed up of it within a week.
I honestly feel the marketing was the main problem, and Nintendo still refusing to release a system with the same kind of functions as the others....sure, it has Netflix and a couple of other apps, but people expect things like proper voice chat in games now, party chat and a proper account system....absolutely no reason at all as to why those couldn't have been implemented. I actually know people who wouldn't buy a Wii U due to the lack of party/voice chat in most games as the see the biggest selling points of the other consoles as being the social aspects of them on top of everything else. Hell, the main reason the group of friends I usually play with online dropped out of Splatoon is because of the lack of basic features in it like party chat which would have made it a lot more enjoyable and social.
Then there was the nonsense last year with Nintendo restricting people's content on their Youtube channels, which seriously hurt their reputation and free advertising.
It's about time that Nintendo started embracing the positive social aspects of the internet instead of only going so far as to have a draconian system like Miiverse, where everything is moderated and censored to death. People may say 'it's to protect kids' but millions of kids use the other consoles and you very, very rarely hear of bad experiences with them or any kind of a negative media outcry.
On saying all this though, I'd argue that even with it's 13 million sales, it's been overall more of a success than the Xbox One. Higher game sales for anything that matters and cheaper to produce, whereas Microsoft have had to backpedal, constantly make changes and throw tons of cash at the X1 just to get it to the 20million sales it currently stands at.
But on the other hand, it makes no sense to me to only include partial game series on a closed unit that I can't add to. If I can't play Castlevania 3 on this thing, then I've got no real interest in just playing the first 2. If I can't play the other Mega Mans, then only having the second isn't going to cut it for me either (I know most people rate Mega Man 2 as the best, not disputing that)...even the minor omissions like Donkey Kong 3 (many people don't even know it exists) or the 'real' Super Mario Bros 2/Lost Levels seem pointless, why not just include them with the other games so the series are complete? In that way, the selection of games feels a bit half assed and incomplete, sorry. And StarTropics but no Zoda's Revenge? Sheesh.
I'll still get one, it's a mini NES! But very disappointed that some games are just randomly plucked from their respective franchises without all of the previous games/sequels included.
Followed this guy on Youtube for a while and I'm really pleased it's somebody like him who's ended up with something like this.
Guy is truly passionate about gaming and always trying to find the best 'hidden gems' on each system, it's definitely well worth checking his channel out.
Has the game breaking bug been fixed for the Wii U VC release? Original version had a point (think it's in Chapter 2-2 or 2-3) where the game would crash if you initiated a certain conversation with a character without locating a nearby key first. I thought I had a faulty disc until I googled it.
Brilliant game, both this and the original DSiWare version. I've already grabbed them both at launch but so glad DX will return to the EShop soon. Now, if only there was a way to get Go! Go! Kokopolo back on there too
I noticed it was also still playing the music for Mario Zone stage 1 over the ending sequence so is it really truely a legit way to beat the game? Still impressive either way

They need to confirm properly if the physical compilation cart is coming out in Europe first.
Loved the first game but I'm not buying the second unless I know I definitely can't get it physical

Re: Nintendo Clarifies Reasoning for Pokémon GO Plus Release Delay
@Jeronan Very well said
Re: Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition Coming This November, Ships With 30 Games
On the one hand, I want this.
Re: Interview: Collector 'Metal Jesus' on His North American Nintendo 64DD Discovery
Followed this guy on Youtube for a while and I'm really pleased it's somebody like him who's ended up with something like this.
Guy is truly passionate about gaming and always trying to find the best 'hidden gems' on each system, it's definitely well worth checking his channel out.
Re: Super Paper Mario
Has the game breaking bug been fixed for the Wii U VC release? Original version had a point (think it's in Chapter 2-2 or 2-3) where the game would crash if you initiated a certain conversation with a character without locating a nearby key first. I thought I had a faulty disc until I googled it.
Re: Digger Dan DX Dispute Settled, Will Be Back On Sale "As Soon As Possible"
Brilliant game, both this and the original DSiWare version. I've already grabbed them both at launch but so glad DX will return to the EShop soon. Now, if only there was a way to get Go! Go! Kokopolo back on there too
Re: Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 Launches in North America on 30th September
Hopefully it's not delayed too long in Europe, I loved the first one.
Re: Nintendo Download: 7th July (Europe)
Glad that this is the week I chose to buy a couple of Everdrives for my old SNES and Mega Drive. I'm sure I find something to play on those.
Nothing I want to download (already have the Professor Layton movie on DVD) so I'll just carry on with Tokyo Mirage Sessions by the looks of it.
Re: Video: Welcome To The Hellish Glitch That Allows Speedrunners To Beat Super Mario Land 2 In Minutes
That's.....crazy.
I noticed it was also still playing the music for Mario Zone stage 1 over the ending sequence so is it really truely a legit way to beat the game? Still impressive either way
