@Watchman What?? Big Buck Hunter doesn’t have pointer controls? Who is the genius who made that decision? lol I mean it’s cool you’re enjoying it, but that’s like a Mario game with no jumping mechanic.
If this truly was the top 10 for this year, it's a pretty lousy year. DLC, an experimental add-on for an old WiiU game. And I'm biased because I didn't like how they modified the controls on Skyward Sword (likely best they could do considering, but was awful to play without motion control) but that was nowhere near my top pick. I'll agree with the poster above who called this list pedestrian. Cruis'n Blast was an ambitious knockout of a fun game and should be here. I would have thought Suda51 would have had more fans and got NMH3 on the list. Monster Hunter Rise was awesome enough that in know people who had no interest in the Switch a year ago who bought the system just for that game (#2 on my personal list after Dread). Eastward amazing and criminally snubbed here like Cruis'n. This site usually has a better showing than this. Makes this year look kinda lame when I thought it was pretty good considering. Oh well.
I recently bought The Sinking City on big discount from the e-shop. Haven't played it yet, but I know Frogwares has a good reputation for making these solid narrative-driven detective games which should be right up my alley. Depending on how much I dig this Lovecraft title, I may dive in once this one releases.
My favorite author of all time. Had no idea this would be available anywhere. Gonna have to track it down, even if Amis wouldn't particularly want me to. Cool article!
The price has nothing to do with licensing. When are people going to learn that's not how capitalism works? The price is set because that's how much Nintendo figures people will pay. It's set before they even know what services are going to be included. This is ludicrous nonsense speculation.
Is there any series with this high level of quality throughout?
I can’t pick a favourite. I bounce back and forth between Fusion, SM and Zero Mission in retrospect… and when I’m playing the Samus Returns remake, I’m always sure it’s the best.
And Prime Trilogy is in my top five favourite games of all time.
I absolutely love every title in the mainline series. And I can’t wait for Dread.
This is actually my favourite Darksiders game. Too bad it couldn’t make the transition to Switch without big compromise. I absolutely would have picked it up again.
This is the first list I’ve read on this site that I strongly disagree with. Most of the time even if I disagree, it comes with a “but I understand where you’re coming from”. This one? Nada.
@Purgatorium Order of Ecclesia for the DS. Starts off kind of pedestrian and there are “side quests” - but the game gets this absolutely lovely boost of difficulty when it gets to its destination. It’s my favourite Castlevania, but I’m also a big fan of the series in general.
I think Super Mario World has the best soundscape in all of video games. Not just the distinct crunchy clickiness of the sound effects, but the music as well and how it all fit together so perfectly. It was one of my first 16-Bit games I ever played and it wasn't the graphics that were on another level to me - it was the sound.
A Hat in Time is gold. 3D platformer fans should be all over that, even though the file size is a little bloated. I think I'm gonna bite on Void Bastards. That's had my eye for a while now.
Jim Power… was that the game with the really insane background scrolling? Almost makes you sick playing it… but also made me kind of love it. I think I’m thinking of the right game.
Hello Neighbour could have been really good. My wife bought it for me one holiday and I hadn’t heard of it at the time. It’s an intriguing premise that managed to jump scare me a few times. The structure is there… but god damn is the execution ever lacking. Buggy and startlingly unfinished. I can’t believe it was even released in the state it was. And yet somehow despite its utter laziness, it’s become culturally relevant? I can’t understand.
Our local EB Games has a great staff who are personable and love games. They've recommended things I like never would have played otherwise. Give me brick and mortar any day.
@link3710 Yeah from what it sounded like, Contact was a bust sales-wise. But God damn was that ever a great game. Still have my copy... May have to have another playthrough after being reminded about it.
The Switch is still selling for the same price as when it came out. No way it's costing Nintendo the same price to make it. The price of the unit has precious little to do with the cost to manufacture. It's what they assume people are willing to pay.
My heart just exploded. This is my favourite developer of all time. Yes yes to all of this… Bangai-O Spirits is my number one favourite game of all time. Thank you for this article!
Other M over Hunters? Not. A. Chance. Hunters may be a product of its time, but at the time, it was amazing. Somehow packing as much as it did into the little DS as well as including one of Nintendo’s best online multiplayer experiences ever? It’s not the best Metroid game by any means, but it HAS to be rated higher than the abomination that was Other M.
@Kochambra Right. Also I look at it like just because it has a certain score, doesn’t mean that one can’t genuinely love the game higher than the number rating would indicate. Wrestling Empire is an example where I understand the 6 rating it received, but it still made the finalists for the month and I still love it regardless of its many flaws. I’ve always felt that these monthly rundowns reflect an overall emotional reaction to these games, rather than the critical ups and downs of a review.
I remember learning this with my friends on the playground. There was an initial shock of “really??” as it was quite a shock for the time. It was shortly followed however by “cool - well she’s a badass”. And from then on, it was never a shock when the protagonist of a game was female. A badass is a badass.
So happy to see Shaolin vs Wutang on this list! With the NintendoLife community as great, diverse and passionate as you all are, you help cut through the noise of the eshop to highlight titles I have totally overlooked. Adding to my wish list right now. Thank you!
@RoguePirate I don't think you're disagreeing with folks who think Dread is overpriced. I wouldn't dream of paying $150 for $40 sneakers. I don't give a s*** about shoes. I do however give a great big s**** about Metroid. Several, in fact. So I'm not hesitating on Dread. But for those who think it's too much when (I'm sure) similar experiences are available for far less - I totally get it.
@RareFan Where did you find a list of controversial episodes? I’m looking for one as the idea of this show being controversial in any way is intriguing to me. I found an article that found it racially troubling, but nothing on it being anti-male. Genuine curiosity…
