Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination's Chris Meledandri are out promoting the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and in an interview with Forbes the Star Fox creator has discussed how Fox McCloud ended up in the movie, despite Nintendo's general reticence to mixing its IPs.

Miyamoto told Forbes that the pitch to include Fox in the Mario movie came from Illumination. “When I got the proposal from Chris about including Star Fox, in general, from Nintendo’s perspective, we tend to avoid mixing IPs," he said, "except for the Pikmin cameo."

However, the idea appealed to the veteran designer and he stared "lobbying activity" in the Kyoto firm's HQ.

"As the creator of Star Fox and this movie taking place in space, I felt that I wanted to see that. I wanted to see what it would be like, but I also felt that there may be significant resistance internally about that idea, so after I got this proposal, I contacted the necessary parties involved and started my lobbying activity here at Nintendo.

“However, I was surprised to find that a lot of people saw a lot of potential with it and were really excited to see what would come out of this.”

Meledandri goes on to mention how actor Glen Powell had reached out after the first film, coincidentally pitching himself as a candidate for Fox McCloud in a potential Star Fox movie.

“After the first movie was done, there were two phone calls that came from actors expressing incredible conviction and passion about being involved with Nintendo, and one of them was from Glen Powell. He explained that we had to understand how deeply he loved the character of Fox McCloud. His dream was one day to be part of a Star Fox movie. I’m listening to this going, ‘he has no idea that Miyamoto-san and I are talking about Star Fox being in this new movie,’ and Glen is expressing this passion for this."

After finalising Fox's role in the Mario Movie sequel, Meledandri called Powell, swearing him to secrecy, and the Top Gun Maverick actor went on to land the role.

Yoshi voice actor Donald Glover was another person to took the initiative in getting involved with the project.

“He was like, ‘I need to be involved, if there’s any way with a Nintendo movie.’ We loved him as an actor and a creator, as well as a filmmaker, and so he came in, and we sat down, and he said, ‘I will do the most incredible Yoshi’. So it was really interesting that these two casting ideas came from the actors themselves.”

The article goes into some spoiler-adjacent details elsewhere, so we'll cover those in a separate post for the majority of you who haven't caught up with the film on *checks watch* the morning of release.

The first reviews landed yesterday (keep 'em peeled for our verdict soon), with the film garnering similar, mixed reactions to the 2023 movie. Lukewarm critical reception isn't likely to hurt its box office chances, though, as analysts are already projecting bumper opening weekend numbers.
