The legendary game designer Suda51 - who has just wrapped up work on No More Heroes 3 for the Switch - has once again admitted how cool it would be to collaborate with a company like Nintendo and "reboot or remake" some of its older IP.
Here's exactly what he had to say during an interview with our friends over at VGC:
“It would be really cool to be able to work on a reboot or remake of some of the older Nintendo IPs that have been around for awhile, especially some of the ones that have been dormant for a long time. If I’m going to do something to really surprise all the gamers out there, then I’d like to do it together with Nintendo.”
As exciting as it all sounds, right now there's nothing currently planned between the two parties:
“Again, I don’t have any concrete plans at the moment, but of course I’m always open to a collaboration with Nintendo."
In an interview with Nintendo Life last month, Suda51 said he would love to revive a lesser-known Nintendo classic, making reference at the time to The Mysterious Murasame Castle:
"There’s actually a game I’ve thought about before that if I could make any Nintendo IP in the way I wanted, it’s called Nazo no Murasame Jō (The Mysterious Murasame Castle). This was a game from Human, the company I first started out at before Grasshopper. I’ve always kind of had a soft spot for this game and always felt like I’d love to go back and revisit it."
And here's a summary of the above-mentioned game, which sort of explains why Suda thinks it would be such a good fit for Grasshopper:
"The Mysterious Murasame Castle, a literal translation of its original Japanese title Nazo no Murasame Jou, puts you in the shoes of Takamaru, a samurai apprentice who has to defeat both an alien creature that has taken over the titular castle, and the daimyos of the neighbouring castles that were corrupted by said alien's power."
If Suda could work on any Nintendo game though, Zelda would probably be number one, but "deep down" he knows it wouldn't be "okay" for him to make a Zelda game.
What Nintendo IP do you think would be a good fit for Suda51 and his team at Grasshopper Manufacture? Why not let Nintendo know in the comments below.

And then they give him Clu Clu Land.
StarTropics and Eternal Darkness.
@OrangeSoda Damn, you got to Clu Clu Land first 😂
Golden Sun could use a remake
Murasame would be perfect for him. Its premise was weird in a way Suda51 would and obviously does appreciate. Plus he could be as wacky as he wanted and likely not “mess up” the source material.
Golden Sun reboot by Suda51 😅. At this point why not. I just want new Golden Sun content. 😁
@Ryu_Niiyama apparently a company he worked for was responsible for Murasame Castle. So that explains a lot.
Sounds cool, but if there's no concrete plans then the game would be at least four years away.
Well they’re not my favorite developer but Nintendo sleeps upon so much treasure like Smaug upon a pile of loot. I’d be happy if they would collaborate with anyone to resurrect some classics. I’ll give him that he tells an interesting story, I just feel he’s too much style and not enough substance. Who knows what he’d put out tho with Nintendo in his corner, give him a shot. Sega and Capcom certainly put out some bangers.
Human made Murasame Castle? I thought was Nintendo EAD?
@OrangeSoda I'd be into a Clu Clu Land with swears and weiner jokes.
Ice Climbers 3D platformer anyone?
Since Brawl, I’ve been wanting a new Ice Climbers game.
Also-Nintendo could make some smaller games (eg Pushmo) or utilize indies (Cadence of Hyrule) to make things happen. Revitalize lots of these lost IP!
@Ghutto Does Nintendo pay attention to any American made IP's outside of their own core franchises?
I don't even think Star Tropics was mentioned in a Smash Bros. game, and if Sakurai doesn't know of it's existence then there's a strong chance Nintendo themselves probably doesn't care much unfortunately.
But a game like Eternal Darkness is long overdue for a sequel or port, but of course Nintendo is doing nothing with it.
@mattesdude Not sure about how a new Ice Climbers game could work with how the mechanics of the old games would translate to a modern game that has too be a couple of hours long in length in order to be interesting.
If he could revive Takamaru's game I'd be all for it. A new installment would probably be just what Takamaru needs to get full Fighter status in Smash 6.
Golden Sun can and should be revived, but not as a reboot, and not by anyone but the Takahashi Bros. over at Camelot. Just give them time to actually make another Golden Sun RPG… Nintendo just crams up all their time with endless Mario Sports titles…
Ice Climbers and StarTropics could really use new reboots in the vain that Kid Icarus Uprising was for that series.
Plus if you release a new StarTropics internationally, it could make Mike Jones popular enough to be a contender for the next Smash Bros. game.
Suma is a very unique developer with a very specific approach to game design. If they were to give him such an IP it would have to be chosen very strictly. I'm sure he could give Startropics justice with its weird whimsical world, plus they're old games so you don't exactly have to be exact with the source material. There's a lot there to build on and you could maybe even find a way to make it an M rated franchise like Nintendo's "Deadpool" franchise, kind of like what No More Heroes is.
The IP he mentioned would be interesting too, I've only been slightly exposed to it through Smash Bros and Nintendo Land. Don't see why he couldnt develop an action RPG game using that franchise.
Nah. Let's have him do Chibi Robo.
@ballistic90 Chibi Robo Zip Lash remake
Nintendo should invest into creating not just any remake. They should work on a full-blown, AAA reimagining of an older IP. Something at the level of Final Fantasy VII Remake, because it gives a whole new perspective in games.
Nah, remaster Lollipop Chainsaw.
I’d love to see somebody new take a kick at the old Mother can.
Eternal Darkness 1.5 remaster with a the original game in HD with a chapter and Character added to each location (Mansion, Persia, Cambodia, France)
Geist!
I buy anything Suda does anyway so I'd be excited whatever he decided to do.
Disaster Day of Crisis, Geist or how about Custom Robo
@russell-marlow well, it could go to a slightly updated style…I’m think like the changes in Boy and his Blob, Blaster Master, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, etc.
Or, they could switch it up more drastically while retaining the concept of the original (Metroid Prime, Kid Icarus Uprising, etc.)
I think they could easily make a game that’s more than a couple hours long-though to be honest I don’t care if it was short either, especially if the price reflected it. I’m not talking about a new Ice Climbers being a 40 hour $60 game. Maybe it’s 5 hours? Maybe it’s $5-10 download only title.
We’ve also seen them do this before…forget the name the top of my head, but it was Excitebike on WiiWare.
I also wouldn’t mind it being reminiscent of an old arcade game. Donkey Kong is just a few levels long, and then restarts. Try to get the high score. They made Yodhis Touch and Go like that.. where you just keep thinking, okay, just one more try.
I’m pretty open! I’d just like to see their return!
Would love to see a remake of Shin Onigashima
Pbth. Suda leans way too hard on "cool" while not fully realizing his own concepts. Just because Nintendo's friendly to him and may respect his abilities, I can't see them hiring him on and placing any significant amount of faith in him.
It would have to be something brand new IMO.
I've wanted someone to do Star Tropics with modern tech since the Wii era. Make it happen!
I'd trust this guy to really "get" the spirit of the older franchises.
And if he was working with Nintendo producers, his games would likely gain that final bit of polish they often need.
Go Go Goichi!
Is this going to be the new "[dev name] says they'd love to have [character name] in Smash Bros" article trend? Because I'd imagine 90% of devs out there would love the chance to resurrect an old Nintendo brand.
Anyway I've only played half of the first No More Heroes of his games, I liked a lot of it but it was lacking polish in some areas (I think the Wii's power was the main issue really). Ultimately the punk nature of it, which was what attracted me in the first place, was the thing that eventually made me drift away from it. But that's 100% personal taste and not a criticism of the game. I meant to go back and finish it or try the sequels, but there's been too much to play and they've slipped by. I'd like to see some of that punk attitude make it's way into a revived Nintendo IP, I think it could meld really well. I'd make time for that!
Nooooooo you're ain't touching any IP sir, learn how to develop good games first please. NMH 3 is a terrible game.
I say reboot older Sega IP's...and no I don't mean the blue hedgehog that should have retired 20years ago.
Custom Robo would be a good fit for Suda. And the robo player will be Travis
Me hoping they give him f zero so he can put his awesomeness into it even though they would just give him jelly boy
@Irfann AAAAAAAAAAAAA -Scott the Woz
Murasame Castle actually sounds like something Nintendo might realistically give to Grasshopper, but i think Eternal Darkness would be a great choice, too.
He literally just announced Ice Climbers Returns.
I personally think he's a bit overrated, but maybe something not of his own, would allow him to focus more on the gameplay. I'm also okay with older IPs getting jumpstarted back to life.
Nice to see all the Star Tropics and Eternal Darkness love in these comments. Are you listening Nintendo?
Hey look! It’s Wario64!
A new Star Fox Adventures would be pretty epic since they know their action games and are able to put together a pretty solid plot. I think they would be able to add something unique to the Star Fox series with their skillsets. Not that I think we would ever get another Star Fox game. Especially of the Adventure series. I do think outsourcing some Nintendo franchises can have a good impact on the titles. Breathes new life into them, so to speak. Or at the very least, have a portion of another studio help make the game, so you can get some outside creativity. Nintendo has done this on some of their most recent projects and it has its shown fruits.
A new Captain Rainbow by Suda51 confirmed?!... a Waluigi game?? Birdo??? Tingle???? Punch-Out????? lol jks.
I think exploring legacy, dormant and/or neglected Nintendo IP's in new ways would be refreshing. I'm probably in the minority of people who actually really enjoyed Star Fox Adventures and could see something similar being done with Captain Falcon & F-Zero like Adventures as a way to really flesh out or add to that property's, characters, world & lore.
Meanwhile Star Fox could do something different like go the route of that rumoured aerial vehicular space racing game- I'm thinking something akin to Diddy Kong Racing with a bigger focus on weapons & battle, which has also been underrated and neglected imo. Just some thoughts (and hopes)!
... Wun can only hope.
He would be perfect for a Eternal Darkness reimagining
Wave race, 1080, F-Zero, Diddy Kong Racing, Beetle Adventure racing, Star Wars Rogue Squadron….. oh he definitely doesn’t mean those does he….
Like really he doesn’t
Now that i have read the full interview, i have to say that while the idea of Suda working on a old Nintendo IP is interesting, i think the most important part of this interview is that Suda says Grasshopper owns Killer Is Dead and that he'd be interested in doing a remaster/remake.
This would mean that there is a chance that the best of Grasshopper's PS360 games Nintendo platforms missed out on has a chance of coming to the Switch.
If Nintendo Life has a chance to interview Suda anytime soon, they should definitely ask him about Killer Is Dead.
Either Eternal Darkness or P.N.03
@russell-marlow Look at something like Grow Home for vertical mechanics, or even Journey where there is a co-op adventure to the “peak”.
Ice Climbers is SO RIPE for a reboot with the right approach. Not Suda 51 though haha.
Why has nobody said the obvious IP for Suda 51: strong]Pro Wrestling[/strong]! Bring back Starman!!! I’d also take a story-centric F-Zero racing RPG. Captain Falcon as a “family-friendly” Travis Touchdown... waggle to scarf down ramen.
He sucks, he should be making Picross instead.
@NoTinderLife You joking? Killer7 and No More Heroes are cult classics and he’s had solid games in multiple genres: Shadow Of The Damned (TPS Action), Let It Die (dungeon rogue lite), The Silver Case (VN), and Sine Mora (shmup) plus his origins from the venerable Super Fire Pro Wrestling series.
He’s not everybody’s cup of tea but he’s a unique voice with a proven track record and a dedicated fan base, however niche.
@Meteoroid He would really nail the characters and the futuristic oddity damn it's already playing in my head like. Adding a taunt move so you can do the alien version of flipping someone off from the machines cockpits or making words appear in the boost lightning like.”NOPE!" when you go past someone. I think he'd do Eternal Darkness really good to, the whole giant chaotic Gods doing weird krap that only makes sense at the end of the story and the ppl trying to not go insane, that's also really a match imo
@Spiders I'm pretty sure F-zero already had a reboot with GP Legend. But as an RPG style racing game, sounds interesting.
I noticed, this is the same company that hired Sega 's Nagoshi, who directed F-Zero GX.
Now, Suda and Nagoshi working on a new F-Zero, that would be spectacular.
Really want to see it happen.
A Killer 7 reboot would be amazing. I love his style, but not sure he would be a good fit to remake a Nintendo IP. Anything is possible I guess. Look forward to whatever he does next.
@Dpullam Why would you want to reboot a series that excelled in nothing. Even when it was Dinosaur planet there was no hope. Hence Nintendo forcing Star Fox in because they thought it would save the disaster.
@bound4earth Exactly! That is why I would want them to reboot the game since they would have the skills to turn the series into possibly something special. I know the original wasn't beloved by a bunch of people, but given to the right studio, it could have been what it should have been. At this point though, I don't think we will be seeing Star Fox anything for a long time besides possibly a Star Fox Zero port someday.
