While 1-2 Switch looks fun, It's not a $50 game. Unless there's more to it that we're not seeing, this really should be a pack-in title.
On to the point though, I like that Nintendo at least has creative vision with their hardware. However, once again, I feel they're being too Japanese for their own good. Taking inspiration from playing cards, and sharing a controller with someone wherever is fine for a small population density like Japan. But in the west, local multiplayer has sadly become a very small niche. Whether you like it or not, Online has been the mainstream method of multiplayer for almost a decade now, and while I hope they can prove everyone wrong, I'm not sure if it's possible.
American gaming has a "bigger is better" mentality. Developers and gamers alike. To them, it's not about fun novelties, or new ways to interact with and share games. It's better graphics, bigger worlds, more modes, more, more, more. This mentality is ingrained into many aspects of Western gaming, and once again, reinforces the stereotype that Nintendo is out of touch with the western gaming market, which in many respects, is true.
@Yorumi While I hate paid online, it's something that all platform holders in the console market are doing. Yeah it sucks, but if it's what's necessary to get Nintendo's online to at least somewhat competent levels, it better be worth it.
@gatorboi352 It really is when you think about it. The Wii U had some fundamental problems in both design and concept for it to ever be a success. Even with a different name, better marketing, and better 3rd party support, it still would've failed, because they fail to solve the underlying problems with the Wii U design wise.
The Switch doesn't have any of the design problems that plagued it's predecessor though. It's only real problems are it's steep price and lackluster launch. I see the Nintendo Switch as much closer to the Nintendo DS than the Wii U.
@gatorboi352 The Switch is already looking a lot better than the Wii U ever was. Sure it's launch line looks laughable, but the year as a whole doesn't look that bad.
@J-Fox If you know Nintendo, this shouldn't have come as a surprise. Nintendo might be done with the Wii Brand, but the philosophy and technology it introduced to gaming still remains within the company, and it's not going away anytime soon.
@link3710 USB charging didn't become standard until the Smartphone era. Even Apple, with their lighting cable BS, still allows you to charge their products with a USB port.
The way I see it, Nintendo seems hell bent on taking away reasons to own a Wii U. Nearly every noteworthy first party game on the Wii U already has an equivalent on the 3DS be it a port or created from scratch. If you're a casual Nintendo fan, or a gamer who wants to get into Nintendo games, the 3DS is a much better system than the Wii U.
If true, then this confirms what I've been predicting this whole time. Nintendo seems to be returning to what they got right with the Wii, while refining and updating it for 2017. In that case, I'm glad.
I know the Nintendo Fandom doesn't want to hear this, but Nintendo made a lot of right moves with the Wii. The Wii U was poorly designed mess that damaged Nintendo's reputation. So taking what made the Wii great, and simply refining and improving it is what they should've done with the Wii U, not toss everything out and confuse people.
@rushiosan They use the term Free-to-Start because they realize the term Free-to-play is stupid. And Nintendo's Free-to-Start games gcan be perfectly enjoyed without spending a time. If you are required to spend however, it's done in a clever and fair way like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, where haggling for discounts becomes a game in and of itself.
@Detective_TeeJay It's Nintendo's fault they didn't come to the Wii U. The Wii U was an overly complicated mess that was rushed, backwards, expensive, and Gamepad aside, did little to seperate itself from it's predecessor. In addition, Nintendo foolishly expected casual gamers to buy overpriced rehashes of games they already played, instead of fresh experiences. The Wii U was just a giant slap in the face to fans of the OG Wii, and it only drove them even further into mobile territory.
The Gamepad is a textbook example of a great idea, killed by sloppy execution. The idea of having instant info, maps, and functions on the controller, freeing up HUD clutter on the game screen. Not to mention all the potential of asymmetrical gameplay is genius. But instead of doing anything interesting with this concept. Nintendo decided it would rather bog down the device by giving it too many unnecessary features IR port, external port, sensor bar, camera, 6 in. screen, seriously they could've cut, or reduce half of this stuff and the Gamepad would've been a much cheaper, not to mention much better controller. Not only that, but it's also needlessly large. The general public saw it as some sort of weird tablet add-on for their regular Wii. People already have an iPad and a Wii, so why would they want a tablet-esque device that does less than a tablet?
If Nintendo had just stuck with the screen concept, shrunk the size, and cut out most of the superfluous crap, the Gamepad would've been far more attractive.
@Quorthon Look anything can happen, but based on past history, it would suck if Nintendo went 3rd party. It's not that I think they couldn't make good games as a 3rd party, I would love to see them continue their quality if they dropped consoles, but based on what happened to Sega, it doesn't look likely.
Like I said, let's wait and see what the NX actually is before we declair 3rd party.
@Quorthon But without their own hardware, there's less of a reason for Nintendo to try in their software. Games would come out at a less frequent pace, there would be even fewer risks like publishing Bayonetta 2 for example, and games like Splatoon would be fewer and farther between. I'm not saying Nintendo should never go 3rd party, they would if it was their only option, but there's no reason for them to do so just yet. Again, let's wait and see what Nintendo actually does with the NX before we make such bold claims.
People must be getting desperate at this point. Nintendo has been giving dev kits out to major publishers for a while, and as soon as one indie developer is kept in the dark, people see it as "herp a derp, no 3rd party support again". I understand the frustrations about the NX being kept a secret, but one indie dev not getting a dev kit is no indication Nintendo hasn't learned. Sony and Microsoft didn't give Indies dev kits until their new platforms were revealed either, so calm down, this is nothing new, not is it something exclusive to Nintendo.
@Quorthon I think we should wait to see what the NX is first before we claim they should go third party. Besides, I don't think anyone would like a 3rd party Nintendo. There has never been a company who maintained their quality of software after they left the hardware business. Not Atari, not SNK, and definitely not Sega. Unless Nintendo can prove otherwise, going third party is probably the worst thing they can do right now.
I doubt Nintendo will reveal the NX at an investor's meeting. However, I expect them to announce a date of when they'll start talking about it. Hopefully it's before E3 since it builds up momentum until release.
@DarkKirby I don't mean appealing to casuals, not do I mean appealing to every audience out there. What I mean is Nintendo should just make games that they want to play instead of pandering to casual or core gamer stereotypes. Like I said, they need to modernize, a lot, but the last thing we need is another Sony and Microsoft clone.
@DarkKirby Why even have this casual/core dichotomy at all? While I'm all for Nintendo modernizing, I don't think that it should be to pander to the "core gamer". Just make games for people in general. I don't see what's wrong with going after people outside the "hardcore " stereotype.
Never mind the people defending this, what annoys me is all the people who claim this "ruins the original intention" or some crap they tell themselves. As for my stance? I don't care. Is it intrusive to the overall story or gameplay? No. Did it need to be removed? Not necessarily, it was an optional feature so those that don't like it can skip it. Still, I won't loose an inch of sleep of not being able to pet MAH FICTIONAL ANIMU WAIFU! characters.
Although I have to wonder, why does Nintendo get more attention when making localization changes like this than Capcom does when they removed that close up of Rainbow Mika, or Sony's censoring of The Last of Us in the UK? People need to remember these are localizations, not translations. Their job isn't to make 1:1 clone of the source material, but to adapt it appropriately to the western market. You can disagree with said changes, but at the end of the day, these companies don't care about a vocal minority of whinny purists on the internet, they care about selling a product, and if it means making slight modifications to avoid potential controversy, then that's them. And you know what? That's fine, as long as the core gameplay, tone, and story are untouched. Call me when you see Nintendo doing 4kids levels of butchering, then we can talk.
@Fazermint "To cite a specific case, Apple is able to release smart devices with various form factors one after another because there is one way of programming adopted by all platforms. Apple has a common platform called iOS. Another example is Android. Though there are various models, Android does not face software shortages because there is one common way of programming on the Android platform that works with various models. The point is, Nintendo platforms should be like those two examples." -Satoru Iwata
@Fazermint Not really. Yes, you'll have to refresh the hardware fairly regularly. But the platform itself will last for years since it's mainly software based. See iOS and Android as an example.
@Fazermint Actually, unifiying home and handheld platforms into one is probably the best thing Nintendo can do right now. Especially since IMO, the practice of releasing a new platform, then scrapping it with a completley new one every 5 years is starting to become an outdated model.
@wiggleronacid For the hardware, Nintendo can have a hardware level system, such as level 1 for the lower end devices, and level 2 for the the higher end ones, and so on. Thus, simplifying the buying process, and making it easier for develop ers to scale their games.
@wiggleronacid What I would like Nintendo to do is make the NX more of a software platform than just a gaming platform. To do this, I think the best way is to adopt the razor and blade model of Android and Windows. Nintendo can make the own NX devices, but they can also licence the platform out to OEMs like LG and Samsung to use it for consoles, phones, tablets, and Smart TVs.
I don't have a problem with Nintendo promoting some of their games on Disney's kids networks. However, they're not the only place they should be having these events on. I'm not trying to say that this makes Nintendo look like a silly kid company, but they should branch out to other promotion outlet than just Kids channels.
It's not really the fact that a 13 year old is wearing a bikini, it's more the fact of the style of the bikini she's wearing. I'll be honest, the original looked too tacky and tryhard so I'm not bothered that they changed this.
@DarkKirby Funny, people say this is the reason Nintendo is kiddy, yet Sony forced Naughty Dog to censor The Last of Us in Europe and nobody cares in the slightest.
I'm not sure this was the best app to start with. It sounds.... Interesting, but once again it's another example of Nintendo being too Japanese for their own good. I can't really see this being a mainstream success in America.
I think merging their software divisions and letting younger folk run the 1st party show is probably the best part of this news. We may even see a creative renaissance from Nintendo.
@IceClimbers Yoshida is actually in charge of SCE Worldwide Studios, not SCE as a whole, and Shaun Lynden is SCEA president. Andrew House is SCE President period.
@Luffymcduck Every other company? People have gotten copyright stikes by companies like Sega and Konami. Not that I'm defending Nintendo on this, but trust me, they're not the only guilty party. A lot of this to be honest, falls onto YouTube, who's broken copyright system allows stuff like this to happen.
