I’m so confused. I thought after abandoning New Horizons for so long, Nintendo would just be focusing their energies on an all-new AC game.
I guess I’ll check out the big update at some point, but ACNH was never more than a cozy game to play w my kids. They don’t have S2’s and I don’t know if they have the time/inclination to go back and play this game after so long.
They’ve grown a lot since 2020/2021.
Edit: Ok, had time to check out the trailer and this is actually pretty cool! I didn't realize the OG Switch edition update will include all the new content. I will have to show the trailer to the kiddos later and see if they'll be tempted enough to play. I know I will find time to collect all the Nintendo consoles to play Ice Climber or whatever on the island.
RE fans are eating well, except these game key cards are empty calories! For me, It takes all the fun out of buying games. I’ll probably just skip all these and maybe buy them used someday, or on steep discount on the eShop. 🫤
Toushinden! There’s a blast from the past! I used to play it with college buddies back then, when 3D games at home were cutting edge. A friend helped me mod my PS1, and Toushinden and PuyoPuyo 2 were my first-ever Japanese imports (the first of many!).
That said, I don’t know if I’m eager to revisit this one!
That’s a yes for me - preordered and I’m looking forward to it, but it’ll be a while before I play it. Back when TOTK launched I only got about halfway through the story before other games pulled me away, so I feel obligated to go back. At least I can do so now in crisp 60fps!
Goood Morning Weekend Fans!
I haven’t had enough time or energy to game much this week. It’s like the only time I make real progress in Hades II or anything on TV is either a Saturday or a Sunday. Anyway, at this point I’ve triumphantly declared “Death to Cronos!” a few times (but not yet with every weapon) but I’ve only beaten Typhon once, and I haven’t romanced Icarus enough or rolled any kind of credits, so I’m still completely enthralled by this game.
I still haven’t even booted up Absolum, though I know I will love and treasure it, hopefully as much as my favorite arcade belt scrollers Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mystara.
Wishing everyone a sunny fun weekend and a very Happy Birthday to @KateGray , you talented youngster! 😁🕹️🎂
The original is an arcade great that never got the love it deserved (did it even make it outside of Japan?). Off I go to see if a physical version of Gear exists stateside or in Japan.
I almost feel pity for EA - sold off and saddled with billions in debt, I guess it’s only natural they’d embrace gen ai to lower costs. The other shoe, dropping soon I’m sure, will be layoffs.
Good luck with your ai slop games! I haven’t bought an EA title in decades, and now I’ll be even less likely to buy.
@FarewellToGibdos That sure looks like a captured Man-Thing, and I agree Marvel’s nod to Swamp Thing would be a cool playable character - you could lurch around hugging enemies and setting them on fire! 😅
I think I also spotted Thanos reclining in the background. I don’t recognize the white skull dude in the Dr. Doom cloak among the boss lineup, though. Maybe a What If character like Cosmic Ghost Rider? I haven’t followed comics in like fifteen years.
Oh nice! I never did play Luigi’s Mansion on my ‘cube back then - it was all about Wind Waker and Phantasy Star Online Eps 1&2 and Biohazard 4 for me, back then.
Another deep dive with Sakurai-san is always a fun watch! I'm still on the fence about this game, though. There has been an onslaught of good games coming out lately, hardly any of which I have time to play. Plus this costs US $70, and I already have a copy of one kart racer for my S2 just getting neglected.
We shall see if the maestro reveals anything that tips me toward a purchase.
@KayFiOS I'm right there with you - new system, same 'ol backlog!
Although I did put about 50-60 hours or so into Cyberpunk this summer. It was the most ambitious, impressive-looking game I've played in ages, as I've limited myself to Nintendo and retro consoles only since the Wii U days.
I bet you'll like it when you play it, though it is a bit overwhelming with its scale and all the hard decisions you have to make.
You’d think a crossover with Crazy Taxi would work well. Maybe it’s already in there? I’ve heard PJ and others speak glowingly of this game, but I’m waiting for the S2 physical version (Q1 next year, I think) and haven’t looked too closely into it yet.
Brewster and the Animal Crossing theme have been waking me up for months now, but the contrast on the numbers was always so poor, I couldn’t tell the time without reading glasses! So this is a very welcome update. I’ll have to download and try it out.
I wonder if we’ll get a Metroid theme this December?
The big ugly game key icon on the box cover will prevent me from getting this game anytime soon.
I liked P5 Royal on Switch and was curious enough about the older games to buy their iterations (FES and Golden?) on Switch Uno, but they’re residing in the backlog still.
I’ll probably just get my Persona fill from them someday. I can’t be buying game key remakes of remakes!
I have my Absolum cartridge raring to go since Friday, but what little gaming time I had over the weekend went to Hades II. Absolum is "absolumtely" on deck, though.
I am quite sure Ball X Pit would addict me within 5 minutes, but I’m holding out for a physical version.
So very much nostalgia for the NES days, bonding with different neighborhood kids over different games over the years, and bike rides to the local toy shop to blow your birthday money or hard-earned allowance on some title that looked good.
For those of my generation, the NES was, and always will be, “the Nintendo.”
I think at one point (before I gradually sold off everything and moved on to newer systems) I had around 40-50 NES games in my collection, but played at least a hundred more through borrowing or playing at friends’ houses.
A few of my favorites titles (like Metroid, Jackal, Friday the 13th, Jaws, and Maniac Mansion) didn’t make the top 50 list here, so FWIW I’ve gotta get out there and rate some games on the site!
In between commitments and attending a Rocky Horror stage show this weekend, I’ll be continuing on in Hades II, trying to see what lurks at the summit of Olympus. I’ll have to break away to try my brand new copy of Absolum though, as I’ve been eager to try that beat ‘em up for a while.
I see lots of peeps are playing Xenotilt right now, but my pinball flips are reserved for the newly released and appropriately-timed Elvira & the Party Monsters and Scared Stiff simulated tables on Pinball FX. I love playing the Mistress of the Dark’s pins in real life, so I’ll happily add these to my virtual collection on Switch. Plus, they’re running a tourney where high scorers can get an Elvira decoration for their in-game hub!
Wishing all NL friends a fantastic time this weekend, and remember, don’t dream it, be it!! 🕹️🫦
@kendomustdie Thank you for the input! That’s very kind of you. It sounds like Carole isn’t too gruesome, so I probably will boot up the game with the kiddos around.
I was so smitten with the aesthetic I preordered a copy at my local shop months ago, and I’ll look forward to picking that up (next week, I think?). I’m relieved that the gameplay is amusing enough.
I just wonder if it’s too dark to play with my younger daughter around though? She’s a tween and can handle things like FNAF just fine, but can be squeamish about some things.
It’s a glorious 3-day weekend for me, with rain forecast for 2 of the 3 days, so I predict I’ll get in some extra gaming time. Doubtless there’ll be plenty of dashing around the underworld and Greek highlands with Melinoë and her Amazing Friends in Hades II. I’m so hopelessly hooked to this game, just like its predecessor.
When (if?) I need a break, I’ll play a round or two in good ‘ol Pinball FX, but it sounds like I have to put Xenotilt on my radar, too.
But the preorders have been coming in too fast, lately. I’m tormented by a stack of untouched or barely-played recent releases - so if for nothing more than guilt alleviation, I’ll play a bit of Pizza Tower, or Art of Vengeance, Ragebound, Galaxy 1, Super Robot Y, Space Cobra, Outlaws, or Shadow Labyrinth.
Wishing all NL pals a marvelous weekend and time well spent with your favorite pursuits! 🕹️👾
Nice score, and another very thorough Tom Massey review. It sounds like this might be the game to pull me away from Hades II (for a little while, at least).
I knew Absolum had too good a pedigree and concept to be bad! Now I’m even more hyped to pick up my preorder later this month.
Nintendo, no need to be shy - go get 'em, and be vocal about it! Bringing a lawsuit against Open AI and other AI companies for their vampiric ways is part of protecting your IP. These AI "services" are running amok already, and it will only get worse from here.
But yeah, I know, I know, you don't want to tip your hand on any potential future litigation.
This is quite the endorsement from PJ, someone who hasn’t once steered me wrong on games. It sounds like the Sonic game has solid mechanics and a compelling gameplay loop, and arcade feels go a long way in my book. I’ve had decent fun with MKW, but I’ll keep Sonic on my radar, too, if it differentiates itself and delivers more immediate fun.
When’s that S2 physical coming out? Hopefully not till next year as I e already overspent on games in 2025. 😓
Mario Galaxy 1&2 is now nestled happily on my game shelf, but it’ll have to float in orbit for a while because I can’t break away from Hades II. I was worried Supergiant Games wouldn’t be able to repeat the magic of the first Hades, but this sequel may actually surpass it! It’s going to end up my GOTY.
If I need a break from Melinoë’s Hellenistic adventures, I’ll probably dip into Pinball FX. It has such a great mix of well-simulated real Bally/Williams tables and fun imaginary ones at this point. Often, the original tables have licensed movie or TV themes and are quite faithful to the source material - I pumped many virtual coins into their original Knight Rider, Princess Bride, and Pacific Rim tables, along with the different Marvel Comics ones. I’ve found that building your table collection slowly, as you await sales, is not only an excellent value, but it compels you to enjoy the intricacies and climb the leaderboard for each of the tables you’ve got. If you don’t have any actual pinball machines in your vicinity, well, here’s a fun substitute!
Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend! Moonlight guide us!! 🕹️🌙
December is such an expensive month and I'll just have bought Metroid Prime 4 two weeks prior at that point, but I want to support these guys for releasing a proper physical at such a reasonable price.
@TheSaneInsanity Thanks, I think? I should have given your post a proper read. And I agree, if (seems like a big if, given US politics) indeed this outrageous new energy demand helps wean us off of fossil fuels, that would be one positive takeaway, at least. More dead trees and displaced wildlife for the sake of solar panels and expediency is not the answer, though.
Either way, my terror over AI goes way beyond power grid and copyright concerns. Let’s develop super-human intelligence as quick as we can no matter what so it can solve all the human problems! Gee, what could go wrong??
@Coalescence You're absolutely right - the immense amounts of electricity needed to run these AI data centers, and the pollution they create (methane-fueled generators? seriously??) are abominable. I've read that a single data center uses as much electricity as tens of thousands of homes would. These blight installations get approved and built without people even knowing what's happening. And then they wonder why electricity bills are going through the roof!
Someone above said "Green energy" is scalable and can fix the problem. But at what cost? Over the last 10 years or so, I have seen thousands of acres of woods and forests, the lungs of this earth, clear-cut to make room for solar panels. And that is just what's visible during my 30-mile ride to work.
For what? So humanity can make EZ-bake movies like this and ultimately annihilate ourselves? It's a race to extinction.
I apologize for the rant, but AI is my least favorite topic.
@MontyCircus I agree with your points and I’ve warmed to this Gee Bee release a bit. If the mouse implementation works well, Hamster could potentially bring amazing spinner & trackball games like Arkanoid and Cabal to Arcade Archives later.
Maybe even Atari/Midway games could join the lineup some day?? Centipede, Crystal Castles, Tempest, and Missile Command joining Arcade Archives would be thrilling! One can dream…
October will be a very expensive month, with not much relief in November. 😓 I just picked up my copy of TMNT Splintered Fate yesterday, with Mario Galaxy 1&2 coming tomorrow. Other looming preorders In October are: Absolum Bye Sweet Carol Pizza Tower Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered Turok Trilogy
Some of these physicals really belong on NL’s “other games” list above!
I saw the Hamster reveal of Gee Bee this morning and liked the mix of brick-breaking and pinball mechanics, but basically noped out immediately because I wouldn't bother to play a spinner game with an analog stick. Substituting a mouse might be ok, though? That's not something I've tried before.
Hamster is really on a vintage game streak lately. The last 6 weeks we got Gee Bee (1978), Dacholer/Kick Boy (1983), Steel Worker (1980), Video Hustler (1981), and Scrambled Egg (1983), with Mach Breakers (1995) being the big exception. I love old games as much as anyone, but I thought we'd get a big popular port announced around Tokyo Game Show last weekend.
@Yosher I never played the Switch 2 introductory Tour, so don't quote me, but S2 Joy Con have a built-in IR sensor that allows them to function like a mouse. OG Joy Con lack the sensor. I suppose they could be pseudo-mice just using the motion sensors, but I imagine that would be really sloppy.
I'm really looking forward to this belt scroller! The art and animation in the game looks great, so I imagine it would work well as a cartoon.
Gamestop still has the Absolum physical release date listed for Oct 17th, so I'll try to pick up my preorder then. I don't know if I'll be ready at that point to put down Hades II, though!
I loved Galaxy 2 but never did play Galaxy 1, so I bought 3D All Stars right away 5 years ago. Here in 2025, All Stars is still on my shelf, and I STILL haven't played Galaxy 1.
I was torn thanks to the high price tag, but soon decided to get this 1 & 2 Pack, just because I loved Galaxy 2 so much and wanted easy access to the duology in a nice definitive set for my collection.
I've got a feeling once I start playing either of the games, the good feels will just wash away any buyer's remorse.
And who knows? With the Mario Galaxy movie in theatres next year, maybe Nintendo will make a 3rd Galaxy game.
Oh I guessed it would be Death Adder! Who’s next - Mr. X from SoR? Dark Falz from PSO? The Bonanza Bros in a plot twist? 😁
Either way, it’s probably not free DLC, or they wouldn’t be promoting it so much. I smuggled a physical copy of the base game from Japan, but it’s been planted in the backlog, and I’ll have to try out the game before deciding whether to invest in any DLC.
Oh no! I do love Alex and Felix, but this is another huge hit to the NL video team, after Jon Cartright departed a few years ago.
Zion, I've been here for your entire NL run and enjoyed so many of the videos you worked on! It was always a bonus for me having a fellow American on the video team. You always put your enthusiasm right out there for us viewers and impressed me with your sincerity and positivity over the years - for instance, rather than just raging against game key carts, you focused on why physical games matter (echoed my sentiments exactly).
And I was another viewer who watched your entire Mario Paint saga, hoping you would score some really cool vintage artwork.
So I'm sad to see you leave my fave video game website, but I wish you much happiness and success in your future endeavors!
Oh dear, I chuckled at too many of the Trekkie references in Gavin’s review to be able to ignore this game. There’s just too much to play through right now! I’ll watchlist it for now in the minuscule chance we get a physical release (Make it so!) and plan on picking this up in the near future.
Technos arcade games Renegade (Kunio-kun) and Double Dragon were my first beat ‘em up experiences, and set the stage for Final Fight, TMNT, X-Men, Dungeons & Dragons, and other later arcade cabs. At home, ports of these games and originals like Streets of Rage kept me playing without eating all my quarters and hooked me to the genre for life. I’m thrilled to see this beat ‘em up renaissance during the Switch generation. I bought so many ports, remakes, and fun new originals over the last 8 years.
But here’s the sad part - in my fervent collecting, I lack the time to play all these purchases. Games like River City Girls 2, DD Gaiden, DD Neon, DD Collection have all been shamefully neglected.
I like Arc Systems’ output recently and I do intend to buy DD Revive. But I am not in love with the look of the game, so gameplay, content, and those mission and story modes will have to carry it for me. I’m just afraid it will languish in the game purgatory pile while I jump on Absolum and hopefully, eventually Marvel Cosmic Invasion.
@shonenjump86 I dig the new Space Cobra avatar pic!
Did you end up buying the Cobra game? I haven’t put too much time into it - I found the controls really slippery somehow, but I do like how closely it follows the TV series in look and sound. It’s a miracle the game even exists in 2025, though.
I bet you’d be interested in the licensed City Hunter game coming out in March, too. Games for 40- and 50-something anime fans!
So happy to see @Shiryu back in these pages! I couldn’t wait for my Hades II physical preorder, either, so I feel a little less guilty now. 😅 I’m sure I’ll devote most of my gaming time this weekend to Melinoë’s divine adventures.
As ever, I’ll try a few runs in Spelunky, too, and shine up my arsenal suit for a mission or two in Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion - I have to try the newly-added gyro aiming with a longbow, though I think I’ll mainly keep spamming my rail gun for every easy victory I can get!
Meanwhile I have to keep an eye out for any news from Tokyo Game Show. I’m excited to hear Red Art Games is bringing us a Switch port of the City Hunter licensed run & gun PC Engine game early next year.
Wishing everyone a sparkling weekend! Death to Chronos! 🕹️👾
@canaryfarmer I would be astounded if you regret that Hades purchase - especially if you nabbed it on sale. Take your time with it and enjoy! From what I've played of the sequel so far, you'll have another delicious feast of a game ready for you when you want it.

I’ve had decent fun with MKW, but I’ll keep Sonic on my radar, too, if it differentiates itself and delivers more immediate fun.
When’s that S2 physical coming out? Hopefully not till next year as I e already overspent on games in 2025. 😓
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (4th October)
Re: Yooka-Replaylee Physical Confirmed For December, Includes Extra Goodies
I'm so tempted!
December is such an expensive month and I'll just have bought Metroid Prime 4 two weeks prior at that point, but I want to support these guys for releasing a proper physical at such a reasonable price.
Re: "OpenAI Is Trying To Get Sued" - Nintendo IP Floods Sora 2 Video Generation App
@TheSaneInsanity
Thanks, I think? I should have given your post a proper read. And I agree, if (seems like a big if, given US politics) indeed this outrageous new energy demand helps wean us off of fossil fuels, that would be one positive takeaway, at least.
More dead trees and displaced wildlife for the sake of solar panels and expediency is not the answer, though.
Either way, my terror over AI goes way beyond power grid and copyright concerns. Let’s develop super-human intelligence as quick as we can no matter what so it can solve all the human problems! Gee, what could go wrong??
Re: "OpenAI Is Trying To Get Sued" - Nintendo IP Floods Sora 2 Video Generation App
@Coalescence
You're absolutely right - the immense amounts of electricity needed to run these AI data centers, and the pollution they create (methane-fueled generators? seriously??) are abominable.
Re: "OpenAI Is Trying To Get Sued" - Nintendo IP Floods Sora 2 Video Generation App
Please by all means, sue the Gen AI companies.
And if Nintendo ninjas can’t even save us from AI’s plagiarizing and replacing human creativity, nobody can.
Re: The Next Arcade Archives Release Will Have Mouse Controls On Switch 1 & 2
@MontyCircus
I agree with your points and I’ve warmed to this Gee Bee release a bit.
Re: Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Games & Accessories For October & November 2025
October will be a very expensive month, with not much relief in November. 😓
I just picked up my copy of TMNT Splintered Fate yesterday, with Mario Galaxy 1&2 coming tomorrow.
Other looming preorders In October are:
Absolum
Bye Sweet Carol
Pizza Tower
Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered
Turok Trilogy
Some of these physicals really belong on NL’s “other games” list above!
Re: The Next Arcade Archives Release Will Have Mouse Controls On Switch 1 & 2
@Yosher
I never played the Switch 2 introductory Tour, so don't quote me, but S2 Joy Con have a built-in IR sensor that allows them to function like a mouse.
OG Joy Con lack the sensor. I suppose they could be pseudo-mice just using the motion sensors, but I imagine that would be really sloppy.
Re: Fantasy Roguelike 'Absolum' Isn't Out Yet, But It's Already Getting An Animated Series
Re: Review: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Switch) - Still Out Of This World
I loved Galaxy 2 but never did play Galaxy 1, so I bought 3D All Stars right away 5 years ago.
Re: Shinobi: Art Of Vengeance Reveals Another SEGA Villain For Upcoming DLC
Oh I guessed it would be Death Adder!
Who’s next - Mr. X from SoR? Dark Falz from PSO? The Bonanza Bros in a plot twist? 😁
Either way, it’s probably not free DLC, or they wouldn’t be promoting it so much. I smuggled a physical copy of the base game from Japan, but it’s been planted in the backlog, and I’ll have to try out the game before deciding whether to invest in any DLC.
Re: Terminator 2D: No Fate Has Been Delayed On All Consoles
It’s refreshing to see a publisher that cares as much for its physical buyers as it does its digital.
Usually we’re stuck waiting months/years after the eShop release. Happens so often, I’m numb to it by now.
I’d say I’m a little sorry for the impatient digital shoppers but nah.
FEEL this little fraction of OUR PAIN!!!
mwah haha 😈
Re: Video: After Six Wonderful Years, Zion Is Leaving Nintendo Life
Re: Review: Star Trek: Resurgence (Switch) - '90s Trek Fan? This'll Transport You
Oh dear, I chuckled at too many of the Trekkie references in Gavin’s review to be able to ignore this game. There’s just too much to play through right now! I’ll watchlist it for now in the minuscule chance we get a physical release (Make it so!) and plan on picking this up in the near future.
Re: Beat 'Em Up Classic Double Dragon Gets A Modern Revival On Switch This October
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th September)
@shonenjump86
I dig the new Space Cobra avatar pic!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th September)
@Shiryu
Ooohhh I didn’t realize! I have to be more thorough reading the comments.
Ollie should realize you deserve top billing, though! 😜
Either way, thanks for the reply, and good luck getting through the onslaught of game releases here in Q4. This hobby feels extra expensive lately!
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (27th September)
So happy to see @Shiryu back in these pages!
I couldn’t wait for my Hades II physical preorder, either, so I feel a little less guilty now. 😅
I’m sure I’ll devote most of my gaming time this weekend to Melinoë’s divine adventures.
Re: Review: Hades 2 - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - A Bewitching Sequel That's A Spell Off Perfect
@canaryfarmer
I would be astounded if you regret that Hades purchase - especially if you nabbed it on sale.
Take your time with it and enjoy! From what I've played of the sequel so far, you'll have another delicious feast of a game ready for you when you want it.
