@TotalHenshin @Rhaoulos I first played Sunshine back in 2003; by that time I had already played Rayman 2, Banjo-Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64, so I had some knowledge of 3D platformers. What I mean is that even then I knew to distinguish a good game from a bad one. Sunshine's not my favourite 3D Mario (that's Galaxy 1), but it has some good moments: the Blooper fight in the harbour, trying to bathe the enraged Chain Chomp, cleaning the teeth of a giant eel (that one is hilarious), King Boo's boss fight... it's a flawed game, but I can say that I actually had fun playing it.
Sunshine's gameplay with an isometric view and the GBA's controls sounds rather awkward, but that screenshot is well-made. The funny thing is that Nintendo had already made something of a 2D Sunshine almost two decades before Sunshine itself: Donkey Kong 3. They both blend shooting and platforming action, and in Sunshine some boss fights are fought against one principal enemy while also using water against smaller enemies, not unlike how in DK3 the player has to fight against DK while also shooting or avoiding smaller enemies. Seriously, obvious technological difference aside, DK3 is something of a very primitive take on the concept.
@gaga64 Sunshine is a good game. Maybe it could be considered inferior compared to other 3D Mario games, but by itself, I think it is objectively a good game.
I'm not interested in this, but, well, if the delay makes it a better film, I guess that's a good thing. What I certainly hope is that Nintendo keeps their games strictly separate from any other kind of media venture. Super Mario: The Movie: The Game would be one of the worst mistakes I can think of. I mean, I know that Mario has had movies and TV shows before, and then there's Pokémon's neverending anime series; but this whole deal just doesn't sound right to me, and neither does the theme park thing. The Sonic movies have been successful and all that, but regardless of how well a video game movie performs, I just think it's not a good path to take. The moment video game companies stop being focused on making video games, they're doing something wrong.
That said, I think this is a sign that Nintendo is going to release a new Mario game (an actual game, not some kind of tie-in, thankfully) in the second half of 2023; probably Odyssey 2, just like BotW2 is releasing six years after its predecessor.
A new Punch-Out!! would be great, but maybe it could be a 3D action-adventure game? Luigi's Mansion 3 has sold over 10 million copies, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land has had great sales too, so it seems there's an audience for that kind of game on the Switch. I also say it because, well, Next Level Games is the only developer I can think of that's capable of making a high-profile Donkey Kong game right now (Retro Studios is busy with Prime 4, and I'm rather sure that EPD is working on Odyssey 2). I think it would be a good choice; DK is popular, 3D platforming / action-adventure games are popular... it would probably sell well.
But hey, if it's a new Punch-Out!!, i'd buy it on release date; they did a great job with the Wii Punch-Out!!. I hope it features old boxers that didn't appear in the Wii game, and that once again a well-known Nintendo character appears as a secret opponent, just like DK in that game (The ideal candidate would be Bowser. Seriously, Bowser as a super-tough, fire-breathing adversary, with claw swipes that can floor you in a single hit, and Bowser Jr. as his cornerman... it would make a great final challenge).
I don't think there'll be any kind of Zelda releases this year, and it's not a matter of how complete any possible remake could be, it's about not competing with your own products - when Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were announced, people said it was too early because Legends had just been released, and those games were still 8 months or so away; so releasing any Zelda game before BotW2 could make people lose interest in it no matter how much they say that they want more Zelda stuff, and that's something Nintendo definitely would like to avoid.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the new Pokémon games are going to be released later this year, so I think that those games will fill the gaps and that any new major releases will arrive next year. BotW2 won't arrive this year, that's disappointing, but people being eager for a Zelda game is something good for Nintendo, they wouldn't want to divert the audience's attention just before its release.
A collection consisting of MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, Peace Walker and MGSV (and maybe you can throw in Portable Ops), all in their original versions (no "upgrades" or stuff like The Twin Snakes)... and then Hideo Kojima and the rest of the series' developers will return and they'll make Metal Gear whole again.
But wishful thinking aside, if this isn't fake, I guess it would be nice to have some games re-released (MGS4 is still only available on PS3), hopefully without changes or missing features... even though Kojima's absence would still hurt...
I don't think there'll be any new Zelda releases before BotW2 arrives, because they would eclipse BotW2 somewhat, gotta keep the spotlight on a game Nintendo has been hyping (not very much, but still) for almost three years - and on a more personal note, I find it somewhat disquieting that people are willing to buy a game they may already own just because BotW2 is arriving... what... three months later than expected? Yeah, it's going to miss the holiday season, but asking for a remake/remaster/repackaging/whatever just because you feel like something must be released reeks of desperation. (Then again, I admit that if Wind Waker HD and/or Twilight Princess HD appeared, I'd probably buy it/them.)
Regarding Mario, Odyssey has sold over 23 million copies - that pretty much guarantees an Odyssey 2 to me, but not for this year. The movie arrives in December, but I don't think a new Mario game will be released just to accompany it, the film can promote the Mario brand for some months before a new game is announced. (And frankly, it would be horrifying if Nintendo lowered itself to churn out a Mario game just to tie in with the film. Stuff like Hotel Mario or the Sonic Boom games comes to mind.)
As for DK, hm... I don't know, but Jungle Beat wasn't very well received by part of the fanbase back in the day, so perhaps we should be careful what we wish for, yes? I'm not saying it would be a bad game, just that perhaps it wouldn't be what some DK fans may expect...
Oh, and Metroid Prime 4 won't be released this year, I'm pretty sure of that.
@Giancarlothomaz
DK64 was no mistake - it had its flaws, but it wasn't bad; and Nintendo didn't make it, it was made by Rare (in collaboration with Nintendo, but still).
Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages were co-developed with Flagship, a defunct studio related to Capcom, so I don't know if that could complicate the development of possible remakes...
I like Fuecoco, if only because of that dorky expression on its face.
Like others have said, these new games are arriving surprisingly early, and considering that Breath of the Wild 2 and Bayonetta 3 are going to be released later this year, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is launching in September, the second half of 2022 is starting to look rather crowded and I'm kinda worried that one of them will end up being delayed for the next year...
@Bass_X0 Stanley kinda does make sense as the third Mario brother, perhaps because he shares Mario and Luigi's arcade origins. I'm not sure if he should be related to them, but it would be great to have him back in a future Super Mario game, just like Odyssey brought back Pauline. (Well, she appeared in some of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games, but still.)
@anoyonmus I didn't know about that fan remake, either. It's not like I want to see any fan projects getting shot down, I was just describing a possibility...
I think there's a high chance of Code: Veronica getting a remake in the style of the RE2 and 3 remakes. The original hasn't been re-released for current-gen consoles, unlike the 2002 remake of RE1, Zero or more recent entries.
The logo is the most noticeable change, but overall the entire teaser feels closer to Tekken than to Street Fighter, for me at least - SF is usually more stylized and colourful than this.
That being said, I think the most important thing is how it plays. We'll see...
I think we'll get a first glimpse this E3 (assuming E3 happens, or perhaps at some other kind of event this summer), but with no gameplay. A Q4 2023 release would be nice, but perhaps it won't appear until 2024. I'm rather sure it'll be on Switch, the console has sold well enough for Nintendo not to release a successor until 2025 or so...
Dammit, there are still a lot of things I want to buy.
Petitioning apparently worked to save the PS3/Vita stores (though not the PSP one), so I don't know, perhaps if there's enough demand Nintendo could extend the date... or maybe not...
Karby is good, but Vending Machine Kirby is hilarious too. The enemies are animals, so there seems to be a "Nature vs. Industrialisation" theme going on. And at around 2:47 into that trailer, there's someone who's either King Dedede, or is wearing Dedede's clothes, or looks similar to him.
Still no date... it'll probably release this summer, I guess. Perhaps it would've been better as DLC for Splatoon 2, releasing only one installment per console, but I suppose they've decided to milk the franchise before the audience grows too old.
I don't think there will be any big surprises - more info about Kirby, dates for Advance Wars and Splatoon 3, maybe more N64 games, but that's it. (Well, GoldenEye would be rather surprising.)
I'm rather sure that BotW2's actual reveal will be at E3 this year (or some kind of equivalent event, given that there are doubts E3 will happen), and will release late this year. I don't know if the WW and TP re-releases will happen, at least not this year.
Remaking Metroid Prime sounds somewhat counterproductive to me - while it would probably sell well, I think it would both overshadow MP4 (at least to some extent) and inevitably force comparisons between the two; but perhaps recreating it on Switch would serve as a good training ground for the people working on MP4... I don't know. Also, Dread released just a few months ago; while they don't play the same, that's another Metroid game to compete with - to avoid cannibalisation, perhaps some space between releases would be recommendable, like how the Link's Awakening remake and Skyward Sword HD were released several months apart from each other and BotW.
Odyssey has sold over 23 million copies, so I think a Odyssey 2 is more likely that that rumoured DK game - and I'm not sure if Odyssey 2 would feature DK characters, Nintendo seems to like to keep their IPs somewhat separate (like how Wario characters don't appear in Mario's own games); then again, DK will appear in the upcoming Mario movie, and that's basically one big advertisement for Mario games, so...
Monolith Soft are probably assisting in the development of Splatoon 3 and BotW2, so I don't think they will release any game this year.
A Fire Emblem game this year is likely, perhaps a remake.
I guess Nintendo partnering with Sony is a bigger possibility, the PlayStation exists because of the botched deal between the two in the early 90s... or perhaps not, after all, that deal didn't come to fruition. Also, most of Sony's studios are Western, and their games seem aimed at a Western audience (God of War, The Last of Us, etc.), while Nintendo is rather Japanese.
But really, I think an independent Nintendo is the best situation for both the company itself and the gaming audience; the Big N may not be perfect, but I think that in order to produce great games, it needs total freedom to develop them, both in hardware and software.
And thank you, Sakurai, for being thankful to the people who thanked you in the first place.
But seriously, jokes and memes aside, thank you, Masahiro Sakurai. I don't know how you feel about being the public face of Smash, but, ultimately, I think you've done a good job. So thank you.
@Chlocean Yeah, that's a very good point. It's just that they're not conventional FPS games - things like platforming and Morph Ball sections (and using the Grapple Lasso in Corruption), puzzles and exploration, plenty of scanning, not constantly getting weapons or collecting ammo (Echoes had ammo, but still)... And then there's the fact that non-Prime Metroid games aren't First-Person Shooters, so perhaps that's why I didn't think of Metroid when I wrote about FPS characters not being in Smash. But you do have a point.
I didn't mean to bash the games or anything like that, Retro's Prime games are great (especially the first one) - it's just that they're not the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about First-Person Shooters.
@Miyamotosan Dream Drop Distance was on 3DS, right? I dunno, they could announce ports of some games for Switch or something (I know more or less about the series, but I've never played it).
@Zeropulse I get what you're saying, and I agree with some points - my stance on remaking the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is not very different from the Metroid / Zero Mission and Metroid II / Samus Returns situation.
Having said that, I do think that remaking video games robs them of their identity; I mean, there are laws regarding the restoration of antique paintings or historic buildings that limit the changes that can be done. I know that people probably won't consider video games "art" or anything close to it, and I will be the first to admit how pretentious all of this sounds, but in some cases, like Metal Gear, I'm against remakes.
I get that video games are especially susceptible to remaking because hardware is made obsolete every few years, but even with the remakes, in a few years the game will be considered "old", so, what should we do? Remake the remakes, and so on, forever? I think what's necessary is to make sure the originals are avaible in new formats.
That's my opinion, but I admit that yours is valid, too. So maybe we should agree to disagree.
Metal Gear just wouldn't be Metal Gear without Kojima's full involvement, and I'm against remaking the already existing games.
As pretentious as the whole "auteur" thing may sound, churning out remakes every once in a while goes completely against the philosophy that Kojima has regarding his work. If the originals are starting to show their age, it's because eveything is, to a certain degree, a product of its time - books, paintings, buildings, even people. Remaking the games, no matter how well it's done, diminishes their individuality. Let them exist on their own. Let them be unique.
And frankly, it would be kinda dumb if a game series where one of the main plot points is the struggle of clones for identity and freedom ends up trapped in an spiral where all it does is repeat itself. They're not tools of Konami or anyone else.
@nessisonett Sometimes I think that the best way to continue the series without Kojima would be to make sequels to the games that were made without his full involvement, like Ghost Babel or Revengeance. But he did supervise those games too, so I don't know... perhaps the ideal solution would be if Kojima Productions and Konami collaborated to make Metal Gear games, giving Kojima the freedom he wants while ensuring that the series has a future, but considering the circumstances in which they parted ways, I don't think the posibility of that happening would be very high.
@Zeropulse I would be against remaking it with 3D gameplay, but a top-down remake of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake with cutscenes, voice acting, an updated storyline and maybe even content that was cut from the originals would be interesting, but only if Kojima does it.
@PigmaskFan Right, I'm not very familiar with Kirby (least of all with the spin-offs / mini-games). I do have good memories of playing Dream Land 2 on Game Boy, though.
I don't really care about this, but, well, it will be somewhat interesting to see. Surprising to know that DK and Cranky will be in the movie - I hope Cranky gets some good meta commentary (as abrasive as expected from him).
This is the first 3D Kirby, right? People are comparing it to Odyssey, and they may be right, but the post-apocalyptic aesthetic reminds me of Breath of the Wild or even The Last of Us...
Well, I hope Kirby's 3D debut is decent. I'm not the biggest Kirby fan, but I do like some of the games in the series...
Banjo is in, that means we'll probably get Tooie too. DK64 was already on Wii U. Don't know what other Rare games we can get. Diddy Kong Racing would be good, but the real surprise would be if Goldeneye 007 would make it.
Semi-humorous article aside, it's kinda interesting to note that the GameCube had a few games like Luigi's Mansion or Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat that would feel at home on the 3DS around a decade later, being smaller adventures that nevertheless had a considerable amount of work behind them.
Wind Waker, despite being the highly anticipated big Zelda game for the console, had that cel-shaded aesthetic that was controversial back in those days and wouldn't be out of place in a handheld installment of the series (many future portable Zelda games used it); Animal Crossing also made its international debut on that console, and it's a game that is also fitting for a handheld, that is meant to be played during short periods several times a day (it could be seen as a prologue to the success the DS had with the casual gaming audience a few years later); also, WarioWare, an original GBA game, was converted to the GC with a multiplayer focus.
The GameCube also used (not much, but it did) that cable that connected it to the GBA, which could be seen as something of a predecessor to the Wii U.
It may just be me seeing what I want to see, but, in that sense, the GameCube could count as a portable.
@BloodNinja Yeah, according to the report, this confrontation is what causes Samus to lose her abilities at the beginning of the game this time (which would make this encounter something of an inversion of the trial in Zero Mission - that happened at the end of the game and gave her abilities). So yeah, this character will probably be the final boss or something close to that.
By the way, Samus gives this enemy's armour a dent on its right eye - I thougt it was a cool touch.
Actually, Zero Mission had something somewhat similar towards the end - after losing her suit, Zero Suit Samus has to undergo a trial from a Chozo statue to gain a new suit. But I think this Chozo is hostile towards Samus, the intention is to harm her; at least that's what I think.
This is the most spectacular preview yet - the Chozo warrior could end up being the final boss, and Kraid's appearance (assuming it's Kraid) sure was surprising. The game's looking better the more they reveal.
Jokes aside, "Lady" is how the Adam AI refers to Samus. It's something of a plot point in Fusion.
@Friendly Because she's the only being immune to the X right now. And regardless of that, the survival rate for these kind of missions is rather low if you aren't Samus Aran.
Another Nintendo game I know next to nothing about. It seems that some of its developers worked on Donkey Kong for Game Boy, which is one of my favourite games for that console, though I haven't found much info about Pax Softonica online. It looks like fun, but as I've said before, I don't know much about it.

Re: Rumour: A "Certain Super Spy" Could Return Within The Next Few Weeks
Half of everything is luck.
Re: Talking Point: Don't Worry, Microsoft Probably Isn't Going To Buy Nintendo - Here's Why
Re: Smash Bros. Director Responds To All The #ThankYouSakurai Messages On Social Media
And thank you, Sakurai, for being thankful to the people who thanked you in the first place.
But seriously, jokes and memes aside, thank you, Masahiro Sakurai. I don't know how you feel about being the public face of Smash, but, ultimately, I think you've done a good job. So thank you.
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate Adds Doom Slayer And Splatoon Characters As Mii Fighter Costumes
Re: Soapbox: 10 Reasons Why Metroid Fusion Is The Best Game In The Series
Fusion was my first Metroid, back in 2002. I don't know if it's the best, but I really like it.
Re: Three Kingdom Hearts Games Are Coming To Switch, But They're All Cloud Versions
[Insert joke about a certain Final Fantasy protagonist].
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate Adds Doom Slayer And Splatoon Characters As Mii Fighter Costumes
@Silly_G The Metroid Prime games are not exactly First-Person Shooters, but yeah, that's true.
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate Adds Doom Slayer And Splatoon Characters As Mii Fighter Costumes
Are First-Person Shooter characters in Smash? Doomguy's costume is the closest thing, right?
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!
@Alexface It's just been announced...
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!
@Miyamotosan Dream Drop Distance was on 3DS, right? I dunno, they could announce ports of some games for Switch or something (I know more or less about the series, but I've never played it).
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!
I didn't think he could make it, but he did. A worthy final announcement.
Now we're done with Smash until the next one is announcend.
Well, we could play the game, but I don't think anyone buys Smash for that...
Re: Rumour: Konami Reportedly Reviving Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, And Silent Hill
Re: Rumour: Konami Reportedly Reviving Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, And Silent Hill
Re: Nintendo Officially Reveals Kirby And The Forgotten Land
@PigmaskFan Right, I'm not very familiar with Kirby (least of all with the spin-offs / mini-games). I do have good memories of playing Dream Land 2 on Game Boy, though.
Re: The Super Mario Movie's Release Date And Cast Are Revealed
I don't really care about this, but, well, it will be somewhat interesting to see. Surprising to know that DK and Cranky will be in the movie - I hope Cranky gets some good meta commentary (as abrasive as expected from him).
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final DLC Fighter Will Be Revealed October 5th
@Banjosbiggestfan @RareFan
Dixie or Funky would be alright, but what Smash needs is Cranky, to put the rest of these so-called "video game icons" where they deserve to be.
Re: A New Kirby Game Just Leaked On Nintendo Japan's Website
This is the first 3D Kirby, right? People are comparing it to Odyssey, and they may be right, but the post-apocalyptic aesthetic reminds me of Breath of the Wild or even The Last of Us...
Well, I hope Kirby's 3D debut is decent. I'm not the biggest Kirby fan, but I do like some of the games in the series...
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final DLC Fighter Will Be Revealed October 5th
Who will be that final fighter? My completely baseless guess is Rayman. Just a feeling. I could be wrong, though.
Re: Nintendo 64 And Sega Genesis Expansion Pack Announced For Switch Online, Launches This October
Banjo is in, that means we'll probably get Tooie too. DK64 was already on Wii U. Don't know what other Rare games we can get. Diddy Kong Racing would be good, but the real surprise would be if Goldeneye 007 would make it.
Re: Talking Point: Was The GameCube Really A Portable Console In Disguise?
Re: Fantastic Metroid Dread Trailer Shows Off Frantic Gameplay And A New-Look Kraid
Re: Fantastic Metroid Dread Trailer Shows Off Frantic Gameplay And A New-Look Kraid
@BloodNinja @RCGamer
Actually, Zero Mission had something somewhat similar towards the end - after losing her suit, Zero Suit Samus has to undergo a trial from a Chozo statue to gain a new suit. But I think this Chozo is hostile towards Samus, the intention is to harm her; at least that's what I think.
Re: Fantastic Metroid Dread Trailer Shows Off Frantic Gameplay And A New-Look Kraid
This is the most spectacular preview yet - the Chozo warrior could end up being the final boss, and Kraid's appearance (assuming it's Kraid) sure was surprising. The game's looking better the more they reveal.
Re: Latest Metroid Dread Report Explores Samus' Special Abilities, New Trailer Also Released
@SwitchVogel Energy Parts already appeared in Other M; they worked like in this game, collect four to create one Energy Tank.
Re: Latest Metroid Dread Report Explores Samus' Special Abilities, New Trailer Also Released
@BloodNinja Several Metroid games have intro movies recapping events from previous entries.
Super Metroid had one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86Z4bwdxn_Y
Metroid Fusion had one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N03jUDnPveA
Even Other M had a recreation of Super Metroid's climax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5WJa1VDNmo
Jokes aside, "Lady" is how the Adam AI refers to Samus. It's something of a plot point in Fusion.
@Friendly Because she's the only being immune to the X right now. And regardless of that, the survival rate for these kind of missions is rather low if you aren't Samus Aran.
Re: Latest Metroid Dread Report Explores Samus' Special Abilities, New Trailer Also Released
There are some quality screenshots on this report - nice usage of sunlight effects, bodies of water and aquatic backgrounds also look good.
@NimrodsSon
I don't know, sometimes I feel that the environments and colours in Samus Returns look somewhat ugly; I prefer this more subdued approach.
Re: Video: Miyamoto’s Loveable But Forgotten Game Boy Classic - Mole Mania
Another Nintendo game I know next to nothing about. It seems that some of its developers worked on Donkey Kong for Game Boy, which is one of my favourite games for that console, though I haven't found much info about Pax Softonica online. It looks like fun, but as I've said before, I don't know much about it.
